Will the 49ers have an offensive coordinator in 2022?

The 49ers will have a new offensive coordinator for the 2022 season. Or will they?

Sunday evening the Miami Dolphins hired 49ers offensive coordinator to be their new head coach, replacing Brian Flores. McDaniel signed a four-year contract with the Dolphins according to reports. San Francisco will receive third round compensatory draft picks in 2022 and 2023 because McDaniel is biracial.

From 2017 to 2020, Kyle Shanahan did not have anyone with the offensive coordinator title on his staff. Mike LaFleur served as pass game coordinator and Mike McDaniel the run game coordinator.

After LaFleur left with Robert Saleh to join the New York Jets, Shanahan finally gave McDaniel the offensive coordinator title.

Despite the new title, McDaniel’s responsibilities stayed the same. McDaniel would spend the beginning of each week putting together the plan for the running game while Kyle Shanahan and Bobby Slowik worked on the plan for the passing attack.

During his first meeting with the media as offensive coordinator, McDaniel made it clear that Shanahan would still be the one in charge of directing the 49ers’ offense.

“I think one of the best aspects that the San Francisco 49ers have going, is we have one of the best play-callers to have done it,” said McDaniel. “He’s done it for multiple teams for years. And it’s a real gift of his. So I don’t think that that does the 49ers good to try to work me in selfishly as the play-caller. We’re very comfortable in our working relationship and he relies on my opinion. But he also makes it very clear that his expectation is that my opinions are informed and that it adds value to him. And that’s really all that we’re focused on here moving forward.”

San Francisco hired Anthony Lynn to serve as assistant head coach Friday. The specialty throughout his career has been his work with running backs and the running game. It’s likely that Lynn’s primary role will be to replace McDaniel in building the game plan each week for the running game.

The loss of McDaniel makes four offensive assistants who have left the 49ers in the past week as both assistant offensive line coaches Butch Barry and Zach Yenser have moved on to new places and tight ends coach Jon Embree left the team.

San Francisco will also be looking for a new special teams coordinator after Richard Hightower left the 49ers to take the same role with the Chicago Bears.

Hightower taking a lateral move is likely a sign the 49ers let him move on gracefully instead of announcing his firing. After being decent from 2017 to 2019, Hightower’s special team’s units struggled the last two years, ranking near the bottom of the NFL in 2020 and 2021.

One possible replacement for Hightower could be former New York Giants head coach Joe Judge. Although his tenure as head coach was a failure, Judge was successful as the special teams assistant and coordinator with the New England Patriots from 2012-2019.

  1. I was surprised when McDaniel was the front runner in Miami. I just didn’t see him as a serious candidate since he was only a coordinator for 1 year, didn’t call plays and is not an accomplished speaker. Obviously I was very wrong. I see Lynn taking over as run coordinator or OC if Kyle chooses to name someone.
I doubt that loosing 2 O line assistants is a great loss and Forester probably already has replacements in mind.

  2. The Giants hiring Daboll made perfect sense. Giants management seems to feel they have something with Daniel Jones so getting the guy who developed Josh Allen makes perfect sense.

I read that one of the reasons Miami fired Flores was because he couldn’t hire good offensive coaches – no one wanted to work for him. Dolphins have had 9 picks in the first 2 rounds of the past 2 drafts and 5 of those picks have been on the offensive side of the ball – 3 of the picks were for O-lineman. And the Dolphins were still ranked 29th in the NFL in Rushing last year. Makes perfect sense to hire an offensive coach. I personally think Kellen Moore and Eric Bieniemy were better options than McDaniel but maybe they turned it down because of the Flores situation and the Pay to Lose allegation. Dolphins got the best offensive strategist available and a guy from the Shanahan coaching tree.

You can go down the list and make sense of just about every hire. My question is: How does the Anthony Lynn hiring make sense? I’m not saying it was a bad hire. Just curious about the logic. If Lynn is the Running game coordinator and Asst Head Coach then you can’t say the 49ers hired him to help develop Trey Lance – Wont that be Rich Scangarello and Kyles job? I know Lynn has playing experience in the Mike Shanahan offense but Lynn is from the Rex Ryan coaching tree which is not remotely similar to the Shanahan offense so how does that help the 49ers run game? Is it maybe to get a new perspective? What was the logic?

    1. Good info on Miami appreciate you sharing. Makes more sense do things in South Beach, where Mike McDaniel is taking his talents.

As for Lynn I think you also do a good job of pointing out that he is not necessarily a long time Shanahan coach. I think as you alluded too this offense will have a new perspective.
Shanahan has lost some of his offensive coaches the last couple of years so he will be forced to adjust.

I think also the drafting of Banks, Sermon and Lance to a lesser extent was a sign of things to come. Now add Lynn and it appears as if we could see more power run?

    2. 1.6. Clearly Lynn was hired to be the run coordinator. They had to make him an asst head coach to get him. He won’t be involved with Trey lance. That’s not his area of expertise.

      1. So again I ask, Why Anthony Lynn? Shanahan’s preferred rush attack is the Outside Zone. The entire 49ers O-line has been selected with the Outside Zone rush attack in mind. Elijah Mitchell isn’t a great fit in my mind for Outside Zone but the entire O-line is geared toward that scheme. If the 49ers resign Raheem Mostert, he’s the best outside zone rusher in the NFL in my opinion. Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t Anthony Lynn’s primary experience with a gap/power scheme? Does the hiring of Lynn signal a transition to more of a gap/power rush attack to match Elijah Mitchell’s strength? Ok, but what about the o-line? Does this signal a major overhaul of the o-line? Alex Mack is best suited for outside zone. Same with just about every other 49er O-lineman including McGlinchey. I just have a square peg/round hole feel with Lynn. I could be totally wrong but I’d like somebody to explain the logic. Jack? Jack? Jack?

    1. Kyle was in Washington w RGIII.

I hope we get an OC – either a promotion from within, or someone to work with Lynn and Shanny….. additionally, those comp picks will be handy, don’t forget- need to develop depth in some areas again.

JimmyG for Xavier Howard sure would be nice……..

    1. For now, picks are as follows:

      R2 Pick 29
      R3 Pick 29
      R3 Pick 38
      R4 Pick 29
      R5 Pick 29
      R6 Pick 8
      R7 Pick 33
      R7 Pick 36
      R7 Pick 43
