2010 NFL Calendar, and key dates for 49ers

The NFL offseason kicks into gear this week with the annual NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Next week, the NFL free-agent signing period begins.

 

Here is a look at the key dates for the 49ers on the 2010 NFL Calendar:

 

Wednesday to Tuesday, March 2: NFL Scouting Combine, Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, Indiana.

 

Thursday: Deadline for clubs to designate franchise and transition players.

 

March 4: Expiration date of all player contracts due to expire in 2010.

 

March 4: Deadline for submission of qualifying offers by clubs to their restricted free agents whose contracts have expired and to whom they desire to retain a right of first refusal/compensation.

 

March 4: Deadline for clubs to submit offer of minimum salary to retain exclusive negotiating rights to their players with fewer than three seasons of free agency credit whose contracts have expired.

 

March 4: Veteran free agency signing period begins, 9 p.m. (PT).

 

March 4: Trading period begins, 9 p.m. (PT).

 

March 15: The 49ers begin their offseason strength and conditioning program.

 

March 21-24: NFL Annual Meeting, Orlando, Fla. (Announcement of compensatory draft picks generally occur during this period.)

 

Mid-April: This is when the NFL announced the dates and times for all regular-season games last year. (We already know the 49ers will have home games vs. Cardinals, Rams, Seahawks, Raiders, Saints, Buccaneers and Eagles; road games against Cardinals, Rams, Seahawks, Chiefs, Chargers, Falcons, Panthers and Packers; and a neutral-site game against Broncos in London.)

 

April 15: Deadline for signing of Offer Sheets by Restricted Free Agents.

 

April 21: Deadline for old club to exercise right of first refusal to restricted free agents.

 

April 22: NFL Draft, first round, 4:30 p.m. (PT).

 

April 23: NFL Draft, second and third rounds, 3:30 p.m. (PT).

 

April 24: NFL Draft, fourth-seventh rounds, 7 a.m. (PT).

 

April 30-May 2: 49ers rookie minicamp for rookies, first-year players and selected veterans, including quarterbacks, Santa Clara (closed to general public).

 

May 24-26: NFL Spring Meeting, Dallas, Texas.

 

June 1: Deadline for old clubs to send tender to unsigned unrestricted free agents to receive exclusive negotiating rights for rest of season if player is not signed by another club by July 22.

 

June 1: Deadline for old clubs to send tender to unsigned restricted free agents or to extend qualifying offer to retain exclusive negotiating rights.

 

June 8: Santa Clara ballot measure on term sheet for proposed 68,500-seat, $937 million 49ers stadium.

 

June 15: Deadline for old clubs to withdraw original qualifying offer to unsigned restricted free agents and still retain exclusive negotiating rights by substituting tender of 110 percent of previous year’s salary.

 

June 27-30: NFL Rookie Symposium, Carlsbad, Calif.

 

Mid-July: Training camps open. Veteran players cannot be required to report earlier than 15 days prior to the club’s first exhibition game. The 49ers will hold training camp at the team’s practice facility in Santa Clara. (The club has yet to announce which dates will be open to the general public.)

 

July 22: Signing period ends at 1 p.m. (PT) for unrestricted free agents who received June 1 tender.

 

August 7: Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony, featuring class of 2010 inductees Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Rickey Jackson, John Randle, Russ Grimm, Dick LeBeau and Floyd Little, Canton, Ohio, 4 p.m. (PT).

 

August 8: Pro Football Hall of Fame Game, Cincinnati Bengals vs. Dallas Cowboys, Canton, Ohio, 5 p.m. (PT).

 

August 12-16: First weekend of exhibition season.

 

Aug. 13: Deadline for a club to trade rights of an unsigned draft pick. (This date was added to this particular calendar because of the numerous questions from a year ago.)

 

August 31: Roster cutdown from 80 to a maximum of 75 players. 

 

September 4: Roster cutdown to maximum of 53 players.

 

September 9-13: First weekend of the NFL regular season.

 

October 31: 49ers vs. Denver Broncos at Wembley Stadium, London, 10 a.m. (PT).

 

November 16: If a draft pick remains unsigned by 1 p.m. (PT), he is ineligible to play for the remainder of the league year.

 

February 6, 2011: Super Bowl XLV, AFC champion vs. NFC champion, Cowboys Stadium, Arlington, Texas.
