49ers @ Rams live blog: First quarter

ST. LOUIS — This is the live blog for the first quarter of the 49ers’ Week 4 Thursday night road game against the Rams. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

5:28 The 49ers win the toss and defer.

5:29 Touchback. Rams start at their 20 yard line.

5:34 NaVorro Bowman bats down Bradford’s third down pass at midfield and the Rams punt.

5:34 Kyle Williams fumbles the punt but there’s a flag. First and 10 for the 49ers at their 33.

5:41 Gore breaks an 18-yard run up the middle but then he’s stopped for a one-yard loss and Kendall Hunter is stopped for a two-yard loss on third-and-11. Dawson pushes the 53-yard field goal attempt wide right. Rams’ ball at their 43.

5:46 Bradford misses a wide open Austin Pettis in the end zone and the Rams must attempt a 40-yard field goal.

5:47 It’s good. 3-0 Rams. Justin Smith was flagged for a facemask penalty on the drive. Tarell Brown has given up two catches for first downs already.

5:53 Quinton Patton goes nowhere on a tunnel screen on third and seven. Tavon Austin returns the punt to the Rams’ 21. The Rams are flagged for holding so they’ll start from their 5 yard line. Good break for the 49ers. The penalties are evening out.

6:00 Bradford converts a third-and-eight with an 11-yard pass to Jared Cook. The Rams follow that up with back-to-back two-yard runs from Richardson and now it’s third-and-six.

6:02 Bradford throws a pass right to Tarell Brown but he drops it. Anthony  Dixon almost block s the punt. The Rams down it at the 49ers’ 42.

6:08 Kaepernick throws deep down the middle to Vernon Davis on third-and-17 and James Laurinitis almost picks it off. The 49ers will punt when the second quarter starts. Boldin was flagged for offensive pass interference on the series.
