49ers v. Panthers live blog: Third quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the third quarter of the 49ers’ Week 10 game against the Panthers. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

2:51 The Panthers’ drive stalls at midfield after two drops, one by Ginn and one by Smith. But Newton is heating up. James returns the punt 15 yards to the 49ers’ 29.

2:53 Vernon Davis is out with a concussion.

2:54 Chase Blackburn is out with a foot injury.

2:57 The 49ers go three-and-out again. Boldin throws a 9-yard pass to Boldin on first down. Kaepernick loses 6 yards on a read option run on second down. And Gore catches a 10-yard pass on third down. Lee punts. Panthers’ ball at their 11 yard line after a tackle  by Spillman.

3:02 Tolbert gains 17 yards on third-and-5. Reid is down on the field after tackling Tolbert.

3:03 Reid is still down. Players are kneeling around him including Tolbert.

3:04 He just sat up. He walks off the field slowly. It looks like he got a concussion, took a shot to the side of the head. Craig Dahl replaces him at free safety.

3:10 The Panthers move the ball down to the 49ers’ 30 yard line and now Gano will attempt a 48-yarder.

3:11 He hooks it wide left. That’s the first field goal he’s missed all season. 49ers’ ball at their 38.

3:16 On second-and-1, Hunter runs up the middle and fumbles. The Panthers recover. Alex Boone was flagged for holding but the Panthers decline, obviously. Mike Iupati is down on the field.

3:17 Ray McDonald has an ankle injury and his return is questionable. Reid is being evaluated for a possible concussion.

3:20 The Panthers’ go three-and-out. Dobbs knocks down Newton’s pass on third-and-3. Panthers punt. 49ers’ ball at their 13 with 13 seconds left in the third quarter.

3:22 Kaepernick runs up the middle for 18 yards and then takes a late hit, which gives the 49ers another 15 yards. First and 10 at the 49ers’ 46 when the fourth quarter begins.
