49ers vs. Packers live blog: Third quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the third quarter of the 49ers’ Week 1 home game against the Packers. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

3:18 49ers start at their 20.

3:26 On first-and-goal from the two, Kaepernick fakes a handoff to Gore and hits Vernon Davis in the end zone for the touchdown. 21-14 49ers. Kaepernick drove the offense down the field by completing four passes to Boldin. The 49ers still have not established their running game, but Kaepernick is passing like Brett Favre.

3:33 The Packers go three-and-out. Lacy goes nowhere on first down and picks up just two yards on second down. Reid makes a nice tackle on Cobb on third down. The Packers punt. 49ers’ ball at their 35.

3:37 Now the 49ers go three-and-out. Kaepernick throws back-to-back low passes on second and third down. On fourth down, Tramaine Brock commits a false start penalty. Lee punts. Cobb returns it to the Packers’ 31. 6:37 left in the third quarter.

3:45 Rodgers hits Nelson on a slant for an 8-yard TD. Asomugha was beaten on the play. Justin Smith was on the sideline for the first five plays of the drive, which allowed Eddie Lacy to gain nine yards on two carries. Rodgers completed two passes to Cobb for 31 yards on the drive. Carlos Rogers absolutely cannot cover Cobb. 21-21 with 3:48 left in the third quarter.

3:50 Matthews now is on the left side of the Packers’ defense. He’s facing Anthony Davis.

3:52 Kaepernick hits Vernon Davis deep down the middle for 37 yards.

3:52 On second-and-nine, Kaepernick throws over a wide open Boldin’s head. Third and nine at the Packers’ 25.

3:53 Kaepernick scrambles around the left end for 15 yards.

3:53 The 49ers waste their first timeout of the second half.

3:55 Sam Shields knocks away a pass to Boldin on a slant on first and goal.

3:55 Kaepernick tries to keep it on a read option and Matthews tackles him for a seven-yard loss.

3:56 Goodwin flagged for the false start. Third and goal from the 22. That’s the end of the third quarter.
