Aldon Smith on DeMarcus Ware: “I wouldn’t say I idolized him but I definitely learned from him.”

SANTA CLARA – In the locker room this afternoon Aldon Smith answered questions, mostly ones about DeMarcus Ware.

Here’s what Aldon Smith said.

Q: Some people have compared you favorably to DeMarcus Ware. Have you studied him on film to see what of his that you can use?

ALDON SMITH: Definitely. Making the transition to standing up. I think he (Ware) played with his hand down at Troy, so I’ve been watching how he’s been able to adjust to the NFL, standing on two feet. I’ve watched a lot of film on him.

Q: More so this week or just in general?

ALDON SMITH: Just in general.

Q: Will you be playing DeMarcus a little bit on the scout team?

ALDON SMITH: I might sometimes. I did it twice yesterday.

Q: When you’re trying to give your offensive tackles a good look, what is it that you’re emphasizing when you’re mimicking him?

ALDON SMITH: We’ve both got long arms, so that’s something that I can kind of give a look to for our offense.

Q: How did the opener go for you?

ALDON SMITH: It went well. I was able to get out there and get some real game experience.

Q: There was a play where someone cut you and you avoided falling by almost doing a handstand. What’s going through your mind when that happens?

ALDON SMITH: Just react. Try to not get on the ground. I think that’s just me reacting and being athletic.

Q: Can you do handstands?

ALDON SMITH: (Laughs) Yeah, I can do a handstand. I’m not going to do a handstand though (more laughs).

Q: Were you surprised that you didn’t play any outside linebacker in that game?

ALDON SMITH: Not necessarily. I had worked a lot in nickel packages throughout the week, so I was kind of expecting to play nickel.

Q: Are they easing you into playing outside linebacker?

ALDON SMITH: It’s just something that we went with. I’m pretty sure every week something’s going to change.

Q: Did you idolize DeMarcus Ware growing up?

ALDON SMITH: I wouldn’t say I idolized him but I definitely learned from him. We’ve got a lot of things in common as far as the way that we’re built. He’s a great pass rusher and any time you can learn from somebody like that you take the chance to.

Q: What are some of the things that stand out about him?

ALDON SMITH: Just the way he gets to the quarterback. His relentlessness. He gets sacks – that’s the goal for me.
