Baalke hired; Harbaugh next?

In the aftermath of a season that didn’t go according to script, it appears the 49ers offseason is going just as planned.

As expected, the Niners hired in-house candidate Trent Baalke as their general manager tonight, a promotion that was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Now, another report suggests the team is closing in on their top head-coaching candidate, Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh. According to the San Jose Mercury News, the 49ers are “likely” to land Harbaugh this week.

The report, citing an NFL source, said team president and CEO Jed York wanted to hire a GM today in order to begin interviewing head-coaching candidates, Harbaugh, presumably, among them, Wednesday. The report said York and Harbaugh have been in regular contact over the past few days.

The Niners have been granted permission to interview Raiders offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. An interview with Jackson would satisfy the NFL’s Rooney Rule which requires teams speak with at least one minority candidate.
