Brit Miller continues to shine

Quick notes from today’s afternoon practice…

• News flash: FB Brit Miller is not perfect. The new face of the franchise dropped David Carr’s pass in the right flat during team period in the second half. Well, at least that allows the rest of the league to catch up a little.

After delivering the biggest hit of the morning session, Miller stood out during the nutcracker drill that began the p.m. practice (and delighted the several-thousand ticket holders in attendance) by getting both Keaton Kristick and NaVorro Bowman on the ground. And after duping the defense into thinking he was just a blocker, Miller sneaked behind Scott McKillop in 7-on-7 and caught Alex Smith’s long pass in stride.

The castoff from Illinois is definitely making his mark in the early part of camp.

• Several veterans – including DL Justin Smith, ILB Takeo Spikes, S Michael Lewis, OLB Travis LaBoy and T Barry Sims – sat out practice, in what promises to be a recurring theme during the dog days of camp. Demetric Evans took over for Smith with the first-team defense, while McKillop stood in for Spikes and Reggie Smith handled Lewis’ duties.

• G David Baas, who suffered a mild concussion in the early practice, was not on the field in the afternoon.

• S Taylor Mays, already enjoying the improved status of the second-team defense, made a pair of nice plays late in practice. He blanketed TE Joe Jon Finley on a short route, helping disrupt a pass from Alex Smith, and on the next play read a gadget play perfectly and was there to touch down the ball carrier.

• FB Jehuu Caulcrick also had an agreeable nutcracker session, driving Kristick backward and standing up ILB Matt Wilhelm.

• It wasn’t all bad for Kristick, the undrafted rookie from Oregon State. He broke up a deep pass from Smith to TE Vernon Davis in team period, getting close enough to Davis that the ball hit the linebacker in the back.

• S Dashon Goldson tried for his third interception of Smith in two days, but missed the ball and allowed Davis to catch it for a deep gain.

• Alex Smith and C Eric Heitmann, the last combo you would expect this of, flubbed a snap in team period.
