Difficult task for Davis to move up from No. 3 on 49ers depth chart in 2010

The 49ers have three quarterbacks on the roster. They will add a fourth at some point during or after the draft.

But if the current pecking order — 1) Alex Smith; 2) David Carr; and 3) Nate Davis – is changed in any way, it will be significant.

Smith is the presumptive starter.

Carr was awarded a deal of $3 million-plus a year to serve as the backup and be an insurance policy.

has a lot of potential but is very raw. The 49ers are taking it slowly with him. Their actions in signing Carr and trading Hill clearly indicated that Davis is being penciled in as the No. 3 quarterback again this year.

If the 49ers select a quarterback at any point in the draft, Davis would then find himself in competition for the No. 3 job. But he is not looking in the rear-view mirror. Davis is working hard this offseason to be upwardly mobile on the 49ers’ depth chart.

Q: What have you been concentrating on during the offseason program?

Davis: “I’m trying to learn the playbook. I keep on it everyday, getting more in-depth with the playbook. I’ll be here, even the off time.”

Q: What’s a normal day like for you during the offseason program?

Davis: “I come in and lift, run a little bit, and then I spend an hour or two on the board (with quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson).”

Q: Are you feeling more comfortable with the offense?

Davis: “There’s no doubt I feel more comfortable with the playbook, but I have a ways to work. I’m still pushing myself.”

Q: Even in the OTAs, you didn’t get a lot of reps, so how do you get better?

Davis: “Of course you want to get reps. But standing back here, you get a lot of mental reps. I’m learning a lot.”

Q: Are there still plans for you to meet up with Donovan McNabb this offseason in Arizona?

Davis: “Yes. That would be at the end of OTAs and when we have a long period of time off (possibly in early July).”

Q: What was your reaction when you saw what happened earlier this offseason with the 49ers signing David Carr and trading Shaun Hill to Detroit?

Davis: “It’s a business. All I can do is worry about myself and keep working hard.”
