Hill (and his back) is back

No, 49ers quarterback Shaun Hill did not require assistance to walk. Instead, there he was jogging around the perimeter of the field prior to the start of practice this morning.

Hill took part in every individual drill and led the team on an impressive red-zone session. Back problem? What back problem?

All this attention that follows around the starting quarterback is a little new to Hill, who apparently had to field a phone call or two from his parents after they learned via news reports that their son was removed from practice Wednesday after one throw because of a low-back strain.

“If it was anything pressing, my mother and father would’ve known from me before reading about it,” Hill said.

Hill said it was wise to take one day to let “things settle down.” He seemed to be just fine today. Hill said he expects to play Saturday for the 49ers in Exhibition Game No. 3 against the Cowboys. The third game is the one in which the starters generally see their most playing time.

Backup quarterback Alex Smith has been ruled out of the game because of a right thumb sprain. Damon Huard and rookie Nate Davis will be available for game duty.

Linebacker Patrick Willis (ankle/Achilles) and cornerback Tarell Brown (toe) will see their first game action after missing the first two exhibition games due to injuries sustained in Mike Singletary’s infamous “nutcracker” drill within the first couple days of camp.

Willis will call the defensive plays, as his helmet is outfitted with the radio transmitter. Brown will not start (Dre’ Bly gets the call) but he will resume his competition for the starting job.

Newly signed veteran Eric Green, a cornerback, will also make his 49ers debut.

Return specialist Allen Rossum spoke to a group of schoolchildren today after practice about the importance of eating healthy foods and exercise.

The 49ers donated $30,000 to provide nearly 2,5000 underprivileged kids from the Bay Area with healthy meals all summer.

The 49ers’ entire defensive backfield — Rossum, Nate Clements, Dre’ Bly, Marcus Hudson, Tarell Brown, Mark Roman, Curtis Taylor, Reggie Smith, Michael Lewis, Eric Green, Jahi Word-Daniels, Shawntae Spencer, Dashon Goldson, Carlos Thomas, Terrail Lambert – along with Vernon Davis, Frank Gore, Michael Robinson, Takeo Spikes and Delanie Walker, joined to donate $30,000 to Revolution Foods to ensure the youth from these organizations are provided with healthy meals for more than three months.

“We know how important it is to eat right, and we wanted to help these kids lead healthy lifestyles,” Rossum said.
