Free-agent guard Chester Pitts visited the 49ers today after meeting with the Lions earlier in the week. He said his agent received a call today from the Seahawks, as they have entered the picture to gain his services. And the Texans, the team for which he has played the first eight seasons of his NFL career, want him to be in touch before he signs with another team.
I asked Pitts if there’s any hesitancy to sign with the 49ers with so much uncertainty going on with the general manager position.
“Not at all,” Pitts answered. “Things happen. That’s the business. People come, people go. It’s part of the game. Based on what I’m hearing, he (Scot McCloughan) just needed some time. Everybody has things that go on in their lives. In football, there are plenty of people who will step in and fill that role. I don’t expect them to miss a beat at all.”
Pitts said during his time at the 49ers team offices, he met with 49ers president Jed York, as well as Tom Gamble, the director of pro personnel.
He has been a starter during his eight seasons with the Texans, and he would expect that to continue if he signs with the 49ers.
“I would expect the five best players to be on the field, whoever they are,” Pitts said. “I definitely expect out of myself to be one of those five guys. But if I signed up and they felt differently at that moment in time, you roll with it and whatever your role is you do the best with it. But I definitely would expect to be a starter here.”
He has been a left guard, but Pitts said if the 49ers are a predominant zone-blocking team, he could easily make the transition to right guard – to play next to a possible rookie right tackle.
Pitts said he received a two-minute voice message from new 49ers quarterback David Carr, encouraging him to sign with the 49ers.
Pitts is coming off microfracture surgery in his right knee. He also had a torn lateral meniscus repaired. Because he said NFL teams offer him the best treatment and rehabilitation facilities, he would like to sign in a timely fashion. He said he believes he’s a month-and-a-half or two months away from being to return to football work.
