Jones expected to be out 8 weeks

Coach Mike Singletary said he expects receiver Brandon Jones to be out eight weeks with a small fracture of his right shoulder.

Jones, who had been among the team’s standouts through the first week of training camp, sustained the injury while attempting a diving catch in the end zone during a 7-on-7 drill on Thursday.

With Jones out and Michael Crabtree without a contract, the 49ers have seen their depth at receiver reduced. Isaac Bruce, Josh Morgan, Arnaz Battle, Jason Hill and Dominique Zeigler comprise the team’s top wideouts.

If Jones remains on his eight-week recovery schedule, he would be available the first week of October, missing regular-season games against Arizona, Seattle and Minnesota. No surgery will be required, Singletary said.

Through the first six days of training camp, Jones had caught the second-most number of passes among the wide receivers behind, surprisingly, Isaac Bruce. Jones appeared to be the team’s best deep threat, as he and Alex Smith teamed regularly on the long ball.

Bruce led the wideouts through six days with 13 receptions, followed by Jones (11), Zeigler (9), Morgan (7), Battle (6) and Hill (5).
