Lots (or not) going on this morning

Lots (or not) going on this morning

A long, eventful morning at 49ers training camp, where the club just went through its ninth practice of the summer.

I spent the morning “tweeting” away, completely oblivious to the fact that none of my missives landed at the desired location because of some hacker:

–The morning schedule was delayed a bit because of a freak rainstorm. I mean, it was really coming down.

–Paging Michael Crabtree: Receiver Josh Morgan went up over Nate Clements to make a remarkable catch of an Alex Smith in 7-on-7 passing drill. The back of Morgan’s head landed hard on the ground. Medical attention arrived immediately, and Morgan stayed down.

–Michael Crabtree, at ease: Morgan walked back to the huddle after spending a couple minutes on the turf. He resumed practice and said he was OK.

–Crabtree’s cousin and adviser, David Wells, told ESPN that the 49ers’ first-round selection is prepared to sit out the entire season and re-enter next year’s draft. Yeah . . . What did you expect anyone from the Crabtree camp to say? It would be the worst “holdout” ever if they stated publicly that they’re not committed to making it a long holdout. Isn’t the whole implied notion of a holdout to show no signs of reporting until you reach the deal for which you’re holding out? Today’s Crabtree story is really a non-story. Plus, a 49ers source tells me his agent, Eugene Parker, has never made any such threat to the team.

–The first fight of training camp occurred today when Vernon Davis squared off against linebacker Marques Harris. It was pretty clear that Mike Singletary held Davis accountable. Singletary pulled Davis some 40 yards away from the team to have a “discussion.” Then, at the next break in camp, the entire team had to perform six round trips of sideline-to-sideline runs.

–Odd sight after practice: Vernon Davis, shirtless, running up Singletary’s Hill, catching passes.

–Shaun Hill singled out Frank Gore and Davis for getting as many reps as they’re getting and still going strong. Gore, in particular, is going really hard this summer. Might he be feeling the need to turn it up to an even-higher notch with Glen Coffee trying to wrangle away some playing time?

–Alex Smith’s first throw of 11-on-11 went for an interception, as he tried to hit Morgan on a crossing out. Takeo Spikes was in perfect position and made the pick.

–Tight end Delanie Walker sat out with a concussion. He has a band aid on his forehead, over his right eye. Marvel Smith and Justin Smith also sat this one out. It’s a veteran thing.

–Kudos to old-man receiver Isaac Bruce. The guy is doing a heck of a lot of running and he has yet to sit out a practice.

–Guard Chilo Rachal returned to work after missing one day with a migraine.

–When the 49ers broke into individual drills, the receivers separated by position. Bruce, Arnaz Battle, Brandon Jones, Micheal Spurlock and Mark Bradford lined up at flanker (or “Z”), while Morgan, Jason Hill, Dominique Zeigler, Maurice Price and Dobson Collins were at split end (or “X”).

–It was just a passing drill and he was out of bounds, but Zeigler made a mind-boggling, one handed catch of a high pass. The guy probably has the best mitts on the team.

Will check in later with a full practice report.
