I have a Twitter account. My 14-year-old daughter will be so proud. Please start following Skinny_Post for Niners news. We’ll link it to this blog shortly, and I’ll try to acquire the social-networking skills of a second grader before the mini-camp.
ESPN’s Sando favors 49ers in West
ESPN blogger extraordinaire Mike Sando believes the 49ers are the early favorites in the NFC West, and at least one scout agrees with him. That’s sort of uncharted territory for most of the players on this young team.
Perry thrilled about following Jerry Rice
Missouri wide receiver Jared Perry sounds pretty amped to be headed to SF for 49ers’ minicamp. He told the Galveston County Daily News that he idolized Jerry Rice as a kid and showed his devotion by wearing a Niners jacket in the wilds of Gulf Coast Texas. Perry cracked his tibia as a senior last year but returned to start for the Tigers in the Texas Bowl.
One more FA tryout: Aaron Kia
Here’s another offensive lineman who will get a look at the 49ers’ minicamp: Aaron Kia, a left offensive tackle from Hawaii whom the Niners want to see at guard and center. Kia is 6-4, 290 with fairly long arms, and he looks like a total bad ass with an island motif painted on his face in eye-black.
Rutgers blogger’s take on Davis
Here’s a nice piece of work by the Niners Nation blog, which contacted another blogger who covers Rutgers football and which now appears on, uh, my blog. (Mind-bloggling, isn’t it?) Anyway, the Rutgers guy presents a mixed view of first-round draft pick Anthony Davis, but it mostly sounds encouraging to me.
Another undrafted FA: Alonzo Durham
Just heard about another undrafted free agent expected to be in Santa Clara this weekend. It’s Nevada’s Alonzo Durham, a 6-4, 286-pound offensive tackle who grew up in the Sacramento area and was a three-year starter for the Wolf Pack. His absence from the team’s official list of free agents probably means he’s coming to town on a tryout basis.
Vernon Davis, Renaissance man
On Thursday, May 13, tight end Vernon Davis will step away from football and pumping iron for a couple hours and focus on his other love. No, not curling. Renaissance art. Davis, called “an avid admirer of Michelangelo and the Renaissance period” in the following press release, will kick off the Art Impact series, a new creation of the San Francisco Arts Commission and the Young at Arts Festival. He…
49ers at Raiders: Aug. 28 at 6 p.m.
The Niners’ preseason game against the Raiders now has a date and time attached to it. Be there Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. at the Oakland Coliseum.
Singletary: no hard feelings toward Blount
There seems to be a little resentment, or at least condemnation, among 49ers fans toward LeGarrette Blount, the former Oregon running back who first agreed to join the Niners as an undrafted free agent, then reneged and joined the Tennessee Titans. Coach Mike Singletary has a suggestion: Knock it off.
49ers’ undrafted FAs: the official list
Speak of the devils. Here are the undrafted free agents we will get to know this spring and summer, along with some bios, all courtesy of the 49ers.
Niners press release on Franklin Mieuli
Here is a press release the 49ers sent out on the passing of former co-owner Franklin Mieuli, who died Sunday:
Maragos: Singletary is a dream come true
LeGarrette Blount found the Titans more to his liking, but at least a couple of the 49ers’ recently signed undrafted free agents sound thrilled to be coming to Santa Clara.
Roundup of undrafted FAs
Following are the undrafted free agents we can confirm so far, culled from various media sources around the country. The 49ers will probably announce them over the next day or two.
Blount going to Titans, not 49ers
The 49ers’ first minicamp of 2010 just got a little less interesting. As you may have heard, Oregon running back LaGarrette Blount, better known for one punch than for 1,084 rushing yards, decided against signing with the Niners and instead agreed to terms with Tennessee.
Replacing a legend
Hi, Niners fans, I’m Mike Bordick. No, wait, I’m Phil Barber. Mike Bordick is the man who replaced Cal Ripken at shortstop with the Baltimore Orioles, and that’s pretty close to how I feel stepping in for Matt Maiocco.
Thank you for a great 11 years
In April 2006, I was asked if I would occasionally write a “web log” to supplement my 49ers newspaper coverage. It sounded interesting enough, but I wondered if anyone would find it, read it and come back. With a fair amount of skepticism, I agreed to give it a shot. Then, I proceeded to type up a few notes about several draft-eligible players who had visited the 49ers in…
Recap of 49ers’ 2010 draft
The first Trent Baalke-Mike Singletary draft is complete with the 49ers selecting eight players during the three-day session. Yes, we write that it was a Baalke-Singletary draft . . . because that’s exactly what it was.
UDFAs Blount, Vann, Brown agree to terms with 49ers
The 49ers have agreed to terms Saturday evening with embattled Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount, who was not selected in the seven-round NFL draft. Blount, who was a projected high draft pick when the season started, saw his draft stock come crashing down when he punched taunting Boise State defensive end Byron Hout following a season-opening defeat. Blount was suspended for the balance of the season before getting reinstated…
49ers wrap up draft with selection of CB Adams at No. 224
The 49ers’ final draft pick of the day was cornerback Philip Adams, a 5-10, 192-pounder from South Carolina State. The pick was in the seventh round, the No. 224 overall pick.
