Practice begins with some old-fashioned hitting

The 49ers did not ease into Camp Singletary. Nope, it opened with a drill called the “nutcracker.” And probably don’t need to know a lot more than that.

There were seven stations set up across the practice field, and offensive players lined up against offensive players for the drill. The object was to go “through” the other player. There was no lateral movement involved, just man vs. man.

Inside linebackers vs. running backs, defensive linemen vs. offensive linemen, outside linebackers vs. tight ends, defensive backs vs. receivers, etc.

The best matchups were Patrick Willis vs. Michael Robinson (pretty even), and Vernon Davis vs. Parys Haralson (of course, Davis said he won but Haralson got the better of Davis on at least one of the four times they went against each other).

Justin Roland got new fullback Brit Miller down and continued to drive. Coach Mike Singletary reminded the players to stop whenever one man went to the ground. He also said the goal was to go straight ahead and not get turned.

This is not the only time this drill will be used, Singletary said. He said it teaches fundamentals and technique. Takeo Spikes, who said he hasn’t done anything like this since his days at Auburn, said the schedule shows they’ll do it again on Monday.

OLB Parys Haralson missed the late portion of practice with a right hip flexor strain. His status is being evaluated.

Also, the 49ers today revealed that rookie defensive end Ricky Jean-Francois was placed on the non-football illness list a couple days ago with a staph infection. The club originally described the condition as a “stomach illness.”

A team spokesman said Jean-Francois developed the staph infection in Miami, his hometown, and the 49ers medical staff diagnosed it Tuesday upon his physical on reporting day.

The 49ers had issues with staph infections last year, as Josh Morgan and Keith Lewis both missed significant time in training camp with the condition.

It’s lunch time right now. When I return, I’ll describe some of the action on the practice field.

Oh, by the way, Michael Crabtree remains unsigned. GM Scot McCloughan described it as a “day-to-day process.” Crabtree’s absence is on its fourth day. He is not able to report to camp for meetings or practices until he signs a contract.
