Ready to get going

**Updates with new player signed.**

It’s the eve of the first practice of training camp, and you can bet the players are eager to get on the field and hit somebody. (And they’ll get plenty of chances in the next few weeks.)

Last night, Takeo Spikes communicated that the team just had a three-hour meeting with coach Mike Singletary. He said the team could’ve probably played at least a good half of football after his speech.

There’s nothing new to report on Michael Crabtree. (If I catch wind of something, I’ll report it.)

Veteran Moran Norris did not report with his teammates due to personal reasons, the club said. Singletary was aware of the situation and excused him. The team says it’s nothing bad.

As reported earlier this week, defensive end Ray McDonald was placed on active/physically unable to perform. He underwent ACL surgery this offseason, and the club hopes he’ll be available at some point in training camp. If not, he can move to reserve/PUP, at which point he would be ineligible to play in the first six weeks of the regular season.

The 49ers waived rookie offensive lineman Matthew Huners of South Florida, placing the 49ers at 79 players on their roster.

***UPDATE (4:51 p.m.): But not for long. The 49ers signed first-year G-C Matt Spanos (USC), whom the Cowboys recently released. Spanos was originally signed last year by the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent.

You might notice a subtle difference in how training camp is reported this summer. Mike Singletary will be made available to the media for group sessions roughly once every-other day. In the past, 49ers head coaches have held daily media sessions with the media.

Yours truly is going main stream this evening. I’ll be appearing on San Francisco‘s KCBS 740-AM at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the opening of 49ers training camp.
