Jed York admits he’s in Miami

Jed York confirmed on twitter that he did fly to Miami today, but Trent Baalke and Paraag Marathe did not go with him according to York. York apparently will attend an NFL meeting in Miami on Monday, although I do not know what the nature of that meeting will be. I can’t find anything about it anywhere. Can you? One thing is for sure — if Dolphins’ owner Stephen Ross…

York, Baalke, Marathe and Capaci flying to Miami?

I have no knowledge if this is credible. I’m putting it up. Turron Davenport tweeted this: “According to a source at Miami International airport, a flight to Miami has been chartered by John York & Trent Baalke set to land at 18:00.” That’s John York, not Jed York. Davenport just tweeted that Paraag Marathe and 49ers’ legal/executive assistant Micheline Capaci are on the flight as well. If all of that is…

What’s a Harbaugh worth?

Here is my Wednesday column on Jim Harbaugh. Under no circumstances should the 49ers give Jim Harbaugh a contract extension this offseason. Let him play out the final two years of his deal. Or let him win a Super Bowl before giving him a raise. Apparently, Harbaugh wants to be the highest-paid head coach in the NFL. Hey, so do I, but I don’t deserve to be. Harbaugh doesn’t deserve…

Baalke: “I like long arms.”

Trent Baalke held a press conference Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine. Here is a transcript. Q: Frank Gore will count $6 or $7 million against the salary cap this season. Is that reasonable? BAALKE: The simple is there is no reason it can’t be. We’re in a good shape from a cap standpoint. There really is no decision to be made. We can move forward exactly as is if…

Harbaugh: “Beware of unnamed sources. They speak with forked tongue.”

SANTA CLARA — Jim Harbaugh spoke in the media tent Thursday afternoon. Here is a transcript courtesy of the 49ers’ P.R. department.   How do you replace FB Bruce Miller and everything that he brought to the table? “Well, a fantastic football player, does so many things for us. [RB] Anthony Dixon will step up and do a great job, as he has been doing in that backup fullback role….

Deep trouble for 49ers’ passing game starts with play-calling

Here is my Tuesday column on Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers’ 31st-ranked passing game. SANTA CLARA – You could argue Colin Kaepernick has been one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the NFL this season. He definitely has been the worst starting quarterback in the Bay Area. The Raiders’ Terrelle Pryor has outperformed Kaepernick in nearly every statistical category. Kaepernick was great Week 1 against the Packers but since then Kaepernick…

49ers 35, Rams 11: Grades

ST. LOUIS – Here are the grades for the 49ers’ 35-11 win over the Rams. KAEPERNICK: B+. He played very well – 115.7 passer rating – even though he rarely went through his progessions.  He didn’t have to – in this game his first read usually was open. This season if his first read isn’t open, he scrambles. On one play in the fourth quarter Kaepernick started scrambling to his…

Report: 49ers trying to trade McCoy

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport just tweeted this: “Not a surprise: 49ers are making calls & trying to trade QB Colt McCoy. If no takers, a release is likely. They just signed Seneca Wallace.” Do you think the 49ers will find a trade partner for McCoy, or do you think the 49ers will release him? Also, I have a hindsight question for you: Who should Trent Baalke have acquired this offseason instead of…

Getting Baldwin in a trade for Jenkins is a real win for Baalke

Here is my Monday column on the A.J. Jenkins-Jonathan Baldwin trade. The 49ers traded A.J. Jenkins to the Chiefs for Jonathan Baldwin Monday morning. Hallelujah for the 49ers. Heaven help the Chiefs. Why on earth would Kansas City trade anything for Jenkins? Why would they want him in the first place? Just this past Friday, they saw firsthand how bad he really is. Jenkins played 38 snaps and caught no…

49ers trade A.J. Jenkins to Chiefs for WR Jonathan Baldwin

The 49ers just announced they’ve traded A.J. Jenkins to the Chiefs for wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin. Here’s a written statement from Trent Baalke: “We would like to thank A.J. for his efforts as a member of the 49ers and wish him all the best with the Kansas City Chiefs. We are pleased to add Jonathan to our team and look forward to incorporating him into our offense. Both players have…

49ers can’t catch a break when it comes to drafting wide receivers

This is my Saturday column on the 49ers’ recent history drafting wide receivers. By now, you’ve seen what I’ve seen from A.J. Jenkins the past two training camps: A wide receiver utterly overmatched by starting NFL cornerbacks. Friday night against the Chiefs, he faced their starting right cornerback Sean Smith and could not shake him. When Smith decided to press Jenkins, Smith swallowed him up. Jenkins couldn’t get past the…

Should the 49ers sign Eric Wright?

Trent Baalke reportedly met with free agent cornerback Eric Wright on Thursday after Chris Culliver tore his left ACL in practice. Do you think the 49ers should sign Wright? Why or why not? Keep in mind, Wright was a good slot cornerback for the Lions in 2011, but he has struggled playing on the outside where Culliver played the past two seasons. So, Wright probably would not replace Culliver. Wright…

Report: Culliver tears ACL, out for season

ESPN is reporting Chris Culliver tore his left ACL in today’s practice. He likely will miss the upcoming season. Which cornerback do you think will take Culliver’s place in the lineup – Nnamdi Asomugha, Tramaine Brock or someone else? And do you think Trent Baalke regrets not drafting a cornerback in the first three rounds of the most recent draft?

Baalke on Eric Wright: “There’s always a possibility he becomes a Niner at some point, it’s just not now.”

SANTA CLARA – Trent Baalke spoke with Bay Area reporters Tuesday afternoon. Here’s what he said. Q: Did you guys know that Eric Wright had been arrested for a DUI in Los Angeles before you traded for him? BAALKE: Absolutely, we did. Like I’ve said many times, there’s a process to the acquisition of players. There are steps you’ve got to go throw. So, as far as being aware of…

Kaepernick vs. Smith part II: Advanced stats

As we know, the statistical difference between Colin Kaepernick and Alex Smith was subtle last season. So, here are some advanced stats to help differentiate the two quarterbacks: Adjusted yards per attempt: (YPA including sacks minus 45 yards for an INT) Kaepernick: 7.0 (1st) Smith: 5.7 (13th) Other notables: P. Manning: 6.5 (2nd), Brady: 6.4 (3rd) Deep Percentage (Percentage of passes longer than 15 yards) Kaepernick: 29.9 (1st) Smith: 13.8…

Iguodala fits the Warriors’ needs

Here is my Thursday column on Andre Iguodala and Bob Myers. OAKLAND – Thursday afternoon in the Warriors’ practice facility, Bob Myers, the best general manager in the Bay Area, introduced his signature acquisition – Andre Iguodala. Myers and Iguodala wore suits and ties and they smiled. Iguodala wore a blue vest and gray socks that matched his gray shirt. He was smart and thoughtful and funny and eloquent and…

Who should be on the 49ers’ Mt. Rushmore?

This is my Friday column on the 49ers’ Mt. Rushmore. Let’s play the Mt. Rushmore Game for the 49ers. Who are the four greatest figures in 49ers history? I’m talking players, coaches or owners. You pick. Who would you carve onto the 49ers’ own Mt. Rushmore? We can agree on three people right off the bat – Jerry Rice, Joe Montana and Bill Walsh. Those are gimmes. “Each of them…

49ers’ mini-camp: Day 2 – Asomugha dominates, Boldin does not finish practice

SANTA CLARA – Here is what stood out to me at Day 2 of the 49ers’ mini-camp. If you have questions about anything else that happened at practice, ask me in the comment section. THE GOOD 1. Nnamdi Asomugha – Played left cornerback for the first team defense and did not give up a completion in full-speed team drills. Asomugha broke up two passes from Colt McCoy in a three-play…

Is he a defensive end? Is he an outside linebacker? “Well, he’s going to play down. He’s not an outside linebacker. In our system, it’s one of the things we really liked is the versatility. He’s a…
