49ers Week 13 grades: Coaching

SAN FRANCISCO – The 49ers lost to the Rams 16-13. Here are the grades for the 49ers coaches.

Coaching: F. This loss falls directly on the 49ers offensive coaches for a variety of reasons.

First of all, what a horrible play to call on your 17 yard line where Colin Kaepernick is in the shotgun and running that option to his LEFT. The pitched sailed out of reach of Ted Ginn Jr. who was in poor pitch relationship for the play in the first place. How many times was that play practiced, and from that negative field position, and for Ted Ginn Jr? I’d guess zero. Kaepernick is right-handed and you run it to his left???????

Second, Roman played for a 50-yard field goal in overtime. There is plenty of evidence that David Akers is terrible kicking field goals which are longer than 40 yards this season.

Vernon Davis caught two passes for 15 yards on three targets in five quarters. Are you kidding me?

The Rams shut down Frank Gore, yet Roman stubbornly called his number 23 times. The Rams were conceding six-yard hitches to the wide receivers and tight ends all game, and Roman only took advantage a few times. He did not take what the defense gave him.

Vic Fangio did not coach well, either. Chris Givens of the Rams had 11 catches on 14 targets for 92 yards. Steven Jackson was next with 5 catches. There was no question who the Niners had to cover in critical situations, but they didn’t get it done.

Amendola had 11 catches last time in the tie game, so it is not difficult to figure out that the Rams are a one trick pony in the passing game.

On the whole, the game plan – especially the offensive one – was not up to snuff, but that will happen when you only have one coach who is the significant designer of the game plan.

If Roman has a bad week as a game plan designer, the whole offense stinks.  That’s why all the coaches should contribute and meld ideas.

When Bill Walsh had a bad week, his team’s offensive productivity also stunk.

Remember, the 49ers have played 10 full quarters of football against the Rams, so Roman should have been better.
