Why Alex Smith doesn’t make the Niners top 15

Some of you may be wondering why I did not rank Alex Smith in the top 15 of all the current Niners despite naming him the team MVP last season.

There’s a difference between value and best. Smith plays the most important position on the team, and last year his backups were two rookies. If he got hurt, it’s reasonable to wonder if the Niners could have made the playoffs at all.

But he’s not one of their 15 best players. He’s an average quarterback – ESPN analyst and former quarterback Ron Jaworski ranked him 16th out of 32 NFL quarterbacks. The Niners 15 best players are better than average. They’re very good to great. But Smith is valuable. There is a distinction.
