Why the 49ers signed TE Cameron Morrah

The 49ers just announced they’ve signed 26-year old H-back Cameron Morrah to a one-year contract. The 49ers did not include a statement from general manager Trent Baalke in the press release.

Morrah (6-3, 251 pounds) missed all of last season with a toe injury. But he’s fast (4.61 40-yard dash), agile (6.99 3-cone drill), strong (24 reps of 225 at the 2009 Combine), he has good hands and he’s a red zone threat. In 2009 at Cal, he caught 27 passes and eight were touchdowns.

Perhaps Baalke signed Morrah because the 49ers felt he has the same tools as most of the H-backs in the draft. Why draft an H-back to replace Delanie Walker when you can sign Morrah for cheap and devote your picks to a trade up? That way, you can get a real player.
