Moss steals the show

SANTA CLARA – The Niners called today’s practice a Veteran Football School On-field session.

Most of the veterans showed up. Frank Gore didn’t, and neither did Mario Manningham or Brandon Jacobs, but that’s OK because VFS is voluntary.

But Alex Smith showed up. He stretched with the offensive lineman and chatted with Alex Boone, one of his good friends on the team.

Michael Crabtree showed up, too. He stretched next to his good pal Ted Ginn Jr., as he usually does. More on them in a second.

Colin Kaepernick showed up. He stretched with his buddies Bruce Miller and Kyle Williams, just like last season.

There were a couple of new faces. Josh Johnson made his 49er practice debut in front of the media. During stretches, as the players jogged back and forth across the field and tweaked their quads and hamstrings, Johnson hovered next to the other new face on the team – Randy Moss – trailing the great wide receiver around the field like a spaniel, asking questions and cracking jokes, trying to make a good first impression.

But Johnson couldn’t monopolize Moss for long. Crabtree and Ginn, the coolest guys on the team last year, the two dudes who most of the other players looked to for social validation, shuffled over to Moss like star-struck kids.

Ginn even dressed like Moss – red shorts and black tights. Ginn was blatantly copying Moss’ style. Last year, Ginn had his own style. He always practiced in white tights which he pulled over the heels of the cleats. Lots of Niners coppied him – Crabtree, Kyle Williams and Frank Gore, to name a few. Today, Ginn was the copycat.

He was also a shagger, but not a wide receiver. Ginn didn’t participate in any of the wide receiver drills – he shagged balls like an intern. Either he’s hurt or he has no role on offense this year, or there’s something I don’t understand.

The quarterbacks started practice by throwing about a dozen 40-yard passes each, deep down the left sideline. Kaepernick and Johnson made it look easy. Smith had the distance down but he kept missing by a few yards to the left or a few yards to the right. Tolzien struggled with the distance.

Kaepernick consistently overthrew his target, which was impressive in this drill, but it foreshadowed the rest of his afternoon in which he consistently overthrew receivers on most plays. Deep passes, crossing routes, out patterns – Kaepernick overthrew them. He has a rocket arm, but he still has trouble with accuracy and touch.

Johnson looked much better than Kaepernick – he was more accurate and his release was much quicker.

When Harbaugh split the four QBs up after the first drill, Johnson, not Kaepernick, paired up with Smith. Harbaugh watched these two closely for about 20 minutes as they took turns throwing passes on the run to the tailbacks.

After one day in the race for the backup QB job, I think Johnson has the lead. He didn’t miss a single throw today. He even practiced better than Smith did today, and Smith did well – he missed a couple 10-yard outs and few deep passes, but mostly he did well.

Smith threw one perfect 55-yard bomb to Randy Moss. When he threw it, the whole organization – players, coaches, trainers – stopped and watched.

As Moss leapt in the end zone and caught the pass, the Niners went wild. Anthony Davis threw his hands up in the air and squealed like a child.

This happened every time someone threw the ball to Moss. After practice, Kaepernick said it was “surreal” throwing passes to him. The Niners were in awe.

But Moss wasn’t just a spectacle – he was a leader. At one point he took all of the wide receivers aside and demonstrated cutting and quick feet. Crabtree and Williams and all of them just stared and nodded at Moss with complete respect.

During the drills, Moss worked as hard as anyone. I was expecting the backups to do most of the work, but Moss jumped into the huddle as often as the coaches allowed him to. This seemed to inspire Crabtree, who sometimes hangs back with Ginn on the periphery of the action.

Today, Crabtree hung with Moss, running as many patterns and catching as many passes as possible, and talking trash the whole time. Moss and Crabtree need strong offseasons – their careers depend on it – and it seems like they’re already bringing out the best in each other.

Crabtree had a very good practice – he caught almost everything, but he couldn’t outshine Moss, the star of the day.

    Good Writeup.

  2. NinersRoc says:

That’s what I’m talking about! We needed a leader among the receivers, and it looks like Moss is taking on that role on the team. As long as he stays focused he can bring so many great things out in this group. Plus, JERRY RICE is pushing AJ Jenkins to be great (I noticed he didn’t really do this with Crabtree). With the WR position looking up, this could be a scary group for defenses.

    • Avetron says:

The 2 best all time receivers tutoring our young guys. I like it!

    • DS94everXev says:

      Ninersroc

JR made the offer. MC didn’t take him up on the offer.

      • NinersRoc says:

You’re right! I forgot about that. I like Crabtree, but I bet now he’s wondering what could’ve been different had he worked out with Rice.

      • SanFranAddic says:

Crabtree’s injuries probably had a lot to do with his not working out with Rice. If he couldn’t workout at training camp, he sure wasn’t going to be running the hills with J.R.

  3. G-DOG says:

Go Randy! Good pick up and he’ll make it happen for the 9ers.

  4. modmike says:

    Colorful and brutally descriptive.

  5. Sergio Mendoza says:

It is good to see that Crabtree is really trying, he is my favorite WR

  6. BennyBlanco says:

Man… I never put much thought into these early practices but the picture you painted Grant gives us a nice secret look into the “good stuff.”

Grant… do you think this could be the best place for Moss since the team unity is so strong and could be a great way to end a hall of fame career on top?

    • Grant Cohn says:

      Yes, I do.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        @Pork,

It’s all about blog hits, and Grant knows DS is his bell cow. Without DS running off with his nonsense this blog wouldn’t hit 100 comments a day.

  7. modmike says:

Thatis, I like the description, but the characterizations and interpretations are brutal.

  8. Jack Hammer says:

Thanks for the behind the scenes look Grant. Are they going to allow reporters to see any of the rookie workouts tomorrow or will you be limited to the Harbaugh presser and locker room?

  9. DS94everXev says:

    Good news all around.

  10. Marcus Cov says:

Nice article Grant, but you’r disdain for Kaepernick is as evident as ever. Every article I’ve read today said Kaepernick was solid and there was no clear differences other than the arm strength of both Kap and Johnson.

    Objective writing is good writing!

    • 23jordan says:

      Macus,

Grant never said that Johnsons arm looked stronger than Kap’s. He said that Kap was inaccurate. He said both their as were very strong. They threw deep very well. He said that alex struggled with the deep balls. Most objective observers already know about Smith’s deep ball inaccuracy. Josh is gonna let his play do the talking. He knows he can outplay Alex Smith. Especially in this offense. I’ve said this long ago. Josh Johnson will be the starting QB for this team soon enough. Smith is done!

      • Marcus Cov says:

Highly… Highly doubt Johnson can unseat Alex or Kap for that matter. He has talent but he couldn’t even unseat Josh Freeman during last seasons debacle. I think he is just too unaccurate.

      • 23jordan says:

        Marcus,

When a team uses a top 10 pick on a QB, you can expect them to give him every possibly opportunity to succeed. Josh Freeman had an excellent year in 2011. Only threw 5 picks. He didn’t play as well last year but he is a talent. If he is their future, they were not going to bench him considering how bad their defense was.
It’s sad to hear guys like you talk about how Johnson couldn’t beat out Freeman. He never was considered for the starting job because of Freemans draft status.
Josh will beat out Kap easily. If you were being objective, you’d already know that Josh has already won the backup job. The starting job is next!!

    • 23jordan says:

      BSxytwbdo123456,

Here you go again, trying to tell someone to check me. You are a real misfit. I really think you need to step away from this blog for a while. Your credibility was shot long ago. You rub a ton of people the wrong way with your lack of football knowledge in general and not just 49er football. Your disdain for MC is just plain stupid, but then again, so are you.
The Cardinal blog is calling you. You wouldn’t last long their either. Know football, then talk football. It’s called football 101. Its a great read. Try it and then reapply for the blog. Until then, BEAT IT!!

    • Jack Hammer says:

      Grant,

Please put this guy on a time out. The first one was bad enough, but this has now become two very offensive posts. And it is clear by his second post that he doesn’t get it.

    • BigP says:

Grant doesn’t like to curb BS’s trash because she is good for the comments count. It’s always nice to know that our taxes afford her the luxury of sitting on her a$$ all day, writing novels for the blog.

    • Grumpy Guy says:

In that case, Grant, could you tell me who the PD’s attorney is? And their email addy? This baloney has gone far enough. Thanks.

    • Grumpy Guy says:

Stop talking to me, DS. You’re a jerk who has nothing relevant to say to me. I told you, I’m done with you.

    • Jack Hammer says:

      Grant,

Seriously, please do something with this guy. He clearly doesn’t get it. This type of thing has nothing to do with the reason this blog exists, and he continues to get more offensive.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @oneniner

“you are just has bad as everyone..(except oneniner)…”

      Only you can say that.
      : – )

People always are after me to know how I differentiate between you and say 23J and bay…they don’t write the “except oneniner” part. They don’t recognize at all about how they may look to some thinking that they are some kind of angels.

    • Marcus Cov says:

Oh come on, I’m as objective as I can be… Buccaneers are my 2nd favorite football team in the league, it’s a distant 2nd but still 2nd none the less. I’ve watched Josh Johnson there’s no way Raheem Morris would have left talent on the bench especially with his job on the line. Johnson completion percentage is about 50-56%, Kap Has John Elway type talent but he is very raw and with mechanical improvements (which improve accuracy) he’s gonna be a beast! Now I agree Johnson will probably be 2nd string at some point this year…. It will be backing up Kaepernick. : p

  11. LasVegas49erFan says:

“Kaepernick consistently overthrew his target”, I remember watching him at Nevada and he had the same problems however , it was a pistol offense. Most of his passes where bullets the receivers were wide open or a run options so the tight windows in the NFL may pose a problem and he seems like he has not progressed. Plus look at his last preseason the Saints game Pick Pick Pick locking on to the first read and trying to force passes into tight windows. Not a big Kap fan but I do like3r stringer Scott I thought based on the Chargers pre-season game he was able to put touch on the back shoulder fade passes that seem to be the norm in the NFL maybe Wisconsin has a pro style offence . Kap is NOT going to be Cam Newton Light.

    • Grimey9er says:

Newton has a lot of overthrows as well. Fortunately for him he’s got Steve Smith.

      • LasVegas49erFan says:

Good Point he does but I think Cam is a more polished passer now but maybe Kap can correct that with the addition on Moss. We will have to see when he was at Nevada Reno there was not a lot of “Traffic” around his pocket, so since he is very tall he was able to use that long wind up throw and very fast “frozen rope” type passes. But the NFL is fast so I don’t know how much he will have to change that throwing motions.

    • DS94everXev says:

There is a reason the Niners picked up Johnson. And it wasn’t to challenge AS. CK was supposed to do that.

      • DS94everXev says:

How many actual football posts have you made today? Bet nearly all are hating me.

  12. T.Allen says:

It is becoming more apparent with each column by Grant that he’s trying to copy Daddy’s style of writing. Start with a little teaser and then”more about them later…”. Then dissect the inner thoughts and motivations of the players in a sort of condescending and all knowing way. It’s like young Grant, who has probably never played a down of football in his life on any level, knows what these professional atheletes are thinking and going through. In this case, he knows the pecking order of these players and he’s letting us in on the real scoop. Thanks Grant.

    • Wilson says:

I disagree. I’ve been very critical of Grant’s analytic capabilities in the past – even insulting, I’m afraid – but I like it when he simply reports what he sees. I think he’s good at describing the action before him, and as long as he sticks to that, I’ll keep reading.

    • Avetron says:

      T.Allen
Have you read about the craft of journalism? Grant is just delivering a fine piece of a chronicle, where the personal point of view of the writer merges with the account of the events in the order of their occurrence.

  13. highpriest333 says:

So many offensive weapons this year! Fresher players on offense because they can cycle, fresher players on defense because less three and outs.

  14. Scooter_McG says:

It’s great to hear Randy is already taking on a leadership role. Hopefully his presence does inspire Crabtree and the rest of the WRs to get the best out of them. It will be a great thing for all the young WRs on the roster to learn from him and see how he practices.

Interesting to hear that Josh Johnson looked very good. I think having a guy like Johnson on the roster will really push Alex Smith and Kaepernick – Kaep in particular will be better for learning that he needs to work hard on his touch passing or he’ll drop down the pecking order.

Thanks for the read Grant, that was a really interesting piece.

    • msclemons67 says:

Gotta be honest Scooter, I’m ambivalent about Moss taking a leadership role. I don’t want him to have a posse the next time he attacks a meter maid or caterer.

On a serious note – I don’t want him to be able to fracture the locker room once he’s established his “leadership”.

The dude has skills but he has quit on 4 different teams already.

      • Scooter_McG says:

Good point – maybe what I should say is I hope he takes on a teacher role. Despite the drama, he is a smart WR that has a lot of useful knowledge to impart.

  15. undercenter says:

Good deal about Moss. I have to admit I was a little reluctant with the Moss signing, not because of diminishing skills but the attitude thing. People who know me here, know that I place a high mark for attitude. Good to see Crabs stepping up.

    • DS94everXev says:

+1 on Moss and attitude. Though you can’t really judge attitude until you are faced with something which might change it. This practice would not do it.

      • undercenter says:

Yes way to early for any judgements but you got to start somewhere. Right now its looking good but as you say what happens when AS or any other QB is missing or not throwing to Moss. I as probably most here will be looking at Moss. I think and I have nothing to base this on but I think Moss is going to be ok.

      • DS94everXev says:

I hated the Moss addition until I heard about the contact. Then I loved it. With what we did so far in the draft, I’m betting Moss is liking it a lot more as well. Speed everywhere. So even if Moss does not get a lot of balls, he will feel like he is really helping and part of the team. If he was it speed wise, I see the old RM coming back. But with this roster, I think that keeps him interested.

      • Pork_Bun_Luncheon says:

        contact?

      • MontanaMan16 says:

Did I not say this shortly after the Moss signing? A blog sugesting Moss wouldn’t be a starter or something like that. Yes, I’m remembering now!!!!

      • DS94everXev says:

        montana

        ???

How are you reading this? I don’t see anything about a starter.

  16. stevebanzai says:

What does it say when all signs are pointing to a 35 year old player being considered as the best wide receiver we have among all of our wide receivers. I wonder what the difference would have been or what it would of looked like if we had Fitzgerald or Calvin Johnson in the mix instead of Moss.

How schooled would our receivers look then? Just a thought…

    • DS94everXev says:

I would love to have LF.

But as long as defences have to 2 Moss/VD and Jenkins proves himself to difficult to handle with 1 defender, we are good to go. I can care less about age.

      • Pork_Bun_Luncheon says:

love to have LFs skinny post in your DSLs

      • DS94everXev says:

How about having some ham for dinner?

Pork. Stay out of my way. I don’t care about you. Why don’t you get your life in order and accept that. You whined the first time I disagreed with you.

What kind of pathetic person keeps hanging around those that don’t like them? Find your little crowd and hang with them. See my posts, ignore them. I do to yours. Don’t reply to my posts.

      • Jack Hammer says:

DS, “What kind of pathetic person keeps hanging around those that don’t like them?”

Funny, we keep asking the same thing about you…

      • DS94everXev says:

        Funny

I asked you before if you want to stop interacting with me and you said No.

You changed your mind, I won’t waste any time with you. Simple as that.

        So, your reply is what?

      • 23jordan says:

DS, I mean BS, I mean DS,

There are several members of this blog that would like you to regularly take 3 days off a week like the rest of us do. It is refreshing not to have to see you post on every single blog entry that Grant creates. Please, in all sincerity, give us a break every once in a while. I’m starting to think that you are on Grant’s payroll or something. You post more than anyone on any blog I’ve ever seen or heard of. Shut it down for a couple days a week. You’re a blog bum and we are starting to smell the stench!!

      • DS94everXev says:

    • Htesrepus says:

He’s a 35 year old future hall of famer though, which is the alpha of the alpha’s.

      • Jack Hammer says:

        Hte,

Moss is a great player when he wants to be. He seems to be someone who needs change every few years. I think this change is going to work out great for both parties. I can’t wait to see him on the field when the games start.

  17. Grumpy Guy says:

I just hope Moss can keep up the positive contribution all year. The man has talent beyond anything we’ve had here since T.O. and Rice. If he really wants it, he can cement his HoF credentials here.

  18. NickRow says:

Thanks Grant. Good news overall. It sounds like Alex Smith is still having issues with deep sideline passes. Also, its interesting to hear that Johnson out played AS. This is only one practice, but it will be intersting to see how things shake out at all positions, including QB, this offseason.

    • 23jordan says:

      Nick,

Just the beginning of what Josh can and will do. Alex can’t fix his deep ball problems. He does not have the strength nor the anticipation to put those 55 yard passes on the money with any consistency. Consistency is his # 1 problem. Josh makes those throws in his sleep because his footwork is on point. Alex just attempted to go to footwork school this past offseason. After 7 years in the league, he figures out that his footwork is horrible! Too late Alex. Don’t lose that playbook. We’re gonna need that back next year! You heard it here 1st Nick!

      • NickRow says:

        @jordan
That wouldn’t surprise me. If JJ gets a fair number of reps with the first team, he may win the starting QB job.

      • oneniner says:

        …haters!!!!

      • NickRow says:

        @Oneniner
That’s all you have. You can’t argue the fact that Alex has deficiencies. So you resort to name calling. That’s weak :)

  19. Htesrepus says:

I like it, sounds like we’re off to a good start.

  20. ModestoNiner says:

Grant Cohn is terrible. lol He has no clue. lol the story was funny/fiction but i don’t think thats what he was goin for.

  22. Kenny Blanco says:

LMAO Grant, RT Anthony Davis just called you “terrible” over twitter. & he wants to know your age.

  23. NinerLove says:

I don’t know why so many of you read this article and we’re happy with what you read.

I’m happy with the way the Niners practiced. I think the Niners are on track for a huge year.

That out of the way, I think the way Grant described some of our players was disrespectful and unprofessional. Just because he’s talking up Moss and selling all of you on what Moss brings to the table doesn’t mean we need to eat it up when it is done at the expense of our other players. One of the most special things about these current 49ers is that we’re a team first organization. They look to each other as brothers and I don’t want anyone or anything to come between that.

Grant you talked condescendingly about Ted Ginn, Anthony Davis, Colin Kaepernick and Josh Johnson. Critique their football skills when it is relevent, but these personal attacks are disappointing.

  24. Mike in SF #2 says:

Hmmm. A.D. is going bananas over Grant on Twitter and Kevin Lynch is reporting the EXACT opposite on Kapernick’s Practice:
“@klynch49 Coilin Kaepernick said he’s working on quicken his delivery and completing passes. He looked good during Thursday’s voluntary workout.”

    • DS94everXev says:

      @mike2

      Why would AD write this?

      Grant

Did you run into his car or something?

      • Mike in SF #2 says:

Here is what AD said all on twitter:
“No, i just believe people should be held accountable. His work is garbage.”
“People like Cohn are the reason i respect and appreciate the writers that actually have integrity and take pride in their work.”
“Does he have a real following? If so then thats a shame lol feeding people pure bullshit lol”
“How old is he? If he’s under 16 i’ll cut him some slack. lol”
“Grant Cohn is terrible. lol He has no clue. lol the story was funny/fiction but i don’t think thats what he was goin for.”

      • Jack Hammer says:

AD probably didn’t like Grant saying he “squealed like a child” when Moss caught the long pass from Smith.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Come on DS, what happened to not bashing the players? They are all great guys right? Well except Crabtree of course…

      • DS94everXev says:

Not paying attention Jack again I see. Wearing that uniform does not grant you immunity to act like a jerk. In fact it is the opposite. Act like that, you demean the whole franchise.

Want to be a jerk? Don’t do it as a member of my team. I represent the team being a fan. I don’t want to be representing that.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Guess we can add AD to the list of players you dislike. Good thing you don’t have Twitter. You wouldn’t like most of the players : )

      • DS94everXev says:

What great tweet from a player made you think better of him? Not one for me.

At best my opinion stays the same.

And how many HC’s tweet? I don’t seem to hear about those very often.

And to answer your burning question, I don’t check on twitter for my news. I can wake up and live my life fine if twitter left.

      • 23jordan says:

        BS,

We all collectively know you couldn’t live without this blog! Please make believe Grant shut it down for the weekend and scram! This could be a better place without you. You’d probably lose your mind if you couldn’t defend oneAlex! You are pathetic!!

      • DS94everXev says:

        oneniner

I said if that was the reason. Jack nor anybody else knows except AD and maybe Grant.

    • Jack Hammer says:

The tweets have now been removed from Davis’s twitter page. What a goof, at least be man enough to leave them up there and deal with the consequences…

      • Niners4lyfe says:

I doubt it was his decision to take them down. Really you’re going to question Davis’ manhood?

      • DS94everXev says:

        Jack

So, you want to interact or not? Don’t waste my time and write another post like you did earlier. Best not converse then.

  25. MarkShark says:

Honestly, this article sounds like it was written by a junior high newspaper reporter. These players, and their fans, deserve much, much more consideration.

  26. Mike in SF #2 says:

Ummm. I think Grant got under Anthony Davis’ skin today. Did you steal his lunch? Here is his Grant twitter rant:
“No, i just believe people should be held accountable. His work is garbage.”
“People like Cohn are the reason i respect and appreciate the writers that actually have integrity and take pride in their work.”
“Does he have a real following? If so then thats a shame lol feeding people pure bullshit lol”
“How old is he? If he’s under 16 i’ll cut him some slack. lol”
“Grant Cohn is terrible. lol He has no clue. lol the story was funny/fiction but i don’t think thats what he was goin for.”

  27. Grumpy Guy says:

Last year’s offense was a Chevy truck. Reliable, got the job done. Not exciting, and got out-performed here and there.

This year’s offense looks to be a Ferrari.

    Looking forward to the change.

    • DS94everXev says:

As long as it gets me to my destination, I can care less.

      • Grumpy Guy says:

Unfortunately, it didn’t. We came up just a little short.

So maybe our chances will be better this year.

      • DS94everXev says:

Fine with me. But if the Ferrari also fails, I don’t care to hear how it is better than the Chevy. If you need a tow, you end up in a tow-truck no matter how you started.

      • Jack Hammer says:

Our offense at times looked more like Tow Mater than a Chevy truck

      • oneniner says:

..actually it did…our destination last yr was the playoffs ……..nobody expected a SB…..

    • NickRow says:

A Ferrari with a bad driver won’t get far :)

    NINERS BLOW DRAFT

    LOL.
Silly Cohn, blogging aint for kids.

  29. Bee says:

Would have been nice if our two former Giants had decided to show. That being said Grant, how much better does Moss looked as opposed to guys like Crabtree and Williams? I mean is it night in day or is he just a step better than the rest so far?

    • DS94everXev says:

Can’t judge what did happen right now. Only what didn’t. But as I said, it is way tooo early to judge anything. Especially since Moss/MC know that their behavior leaves much to be desired they won’t screw it up now.

  30. Brady says:

jeez grant, I sure do love when the Niners are doing things on the field, your posts are so much fun. Your other posts are great too, but you catch the ambiance and character of the Niners team so well when you’re describing things players are doing. It’s so much fun for a fan to get that insight. thanks a bunch.

  31. Not Grant's Mom says:

How many of these positive/encouraging posts are from Grant’s mom? Pretty hilarious.

    Everyone gets a trophy!

    • Msclemons67 says:

How many of the critical posts are from jealous bloggers stuck on obscure sites instead of working for a news organization?

  32. George says:

Grant, thanks very much for this article. I also read the articles today by Barrows and Maiocco. I almost can’t believe it, but this season is starting out even better than last year. It’s like, after the Giants game, the brains behind this team never left the office. They continued to work to transform it. They wanted a number one offense to go with their number one defense, and they wanted it now. If JJ continues to outshine Alex in accuracy and time of release, it’s obvious who will direct the offense, wouldn’t you say?

    • George says:

One last thing I should have added: What’s happening in Santa Clara is going to scare a lot of people.

  33. east coast niner fan says:

      East coast,

Care to make a wager. We could send the funds to Grant. Yes, we are going to the Super Bowl. Not with Alex Smith. Reality check son. The only thing dumb is your inability to use caps and spaces when you type. Go to school much? Must be that east coast high school education???

23 welcher it’s funny you come out of your hole whenever junior blogger makes any comment glorifying the career backup in JJ.
Then you have the stones to make another wager, you are unbelievably in need of help!
Insted of asking BS to stay off the blog, you should fulfill your bet and completely honor it jack pot!

      • 23jordan says:

        Primetreecrab,

Where have you been son. I hear you’re looking good in camp. When are you going to post as being Alex Smith? What about Joe Stayley. You are a real joker. You’ve not been the same since that post Mr. MULTIPLE POSTER!!!! Stick to one name and then we can talk football or wajers. Until then, keep your behind under BS’s behind!

      • Prime Time says:

Keep playing that same card Willy Welcher and predicting the wrong future everything Alex and 49er related.
Well enjoy another winning season, you can maybe open up a fortune telling company and predict the opposite of what actually happens in the future.
Don’t worry about turning a profit, your parents will still let you live in their basement.

      • DS94everXev says:

If we could organize the posts in actual times posted, you will see that before welcher boy posts, it is rather nice. Then he comes and things go bad. Every time. Things never get better with him arriving. Only worse.

      • oneniner says:

..”Care to make a wager.”…from Jordan Welcher………that is just too funny

you mean after your welching on previous bets, you really think anyone will take you seriously…..at least give us some credit…..

      • claude balls says:

        @23welcher:

Wow. In the same comment, you:

        (a) challenged someone to make a wager with you, a proven repeat-welcher; and

        (b) criticized another commenter for poor grammar and typing (but you forgot to tell him to locknot in)

Your inability to feel shame never fails to amaze me. If I didn’t think 23welcher was the perfect name for you, I’d call you 23hypocrite. It also fits you perfectly.

      • OREGONINER says:

        Now, THAT was REALLY academic!!!

  34. Bryan says:

Nice article Grant can’t wait to hear more. Love the Hates !!!!!!

  35. NinerLove says:

I’m highly skeptical that people who are truly “fans” of the 49ers would be here taking some random beat writer’s side over one of the actual 49er players.

Not that everything that ever comes from Anthony Davis is ideal, but in this case I think he deserves to be annoyed.

Read Maiocco, Barrows, Branch or basically any other writer if you want legit articles that are both objective and professional.

    • DS94everXev says:

Players shouldn’t say those things. Let the fans hash it out. Who cares?

Ideally, players should not read the articles. They should be reading the playbook, and coaches notes. Talk to, be nice to the media. Don’t do anything else to be a member of the media. Chances are, you didn’t study media much in school. Stay out of it.

Stay focused. Talking about some writer isn’t keeping on point. The point is to win the Super Bowl.

      • NinerLove says:

Social media has opened up the players to giving their feedback out to the fans much more than ever before.

Anthony Davis was asked by the fans what he though about this article. He responded honestly and in my opinion was pretty fair in his criticism of it.

I don’t think that taking 5 minutes to respond to an inflammatory write up is taking away from his desire to win a Superbowl or the work that is being put into it.

Thanks for being the authority on this subject, but I still disagree completely.

      • DS94everXev says:

And some people should stay away from social media. Especially when discussing their job.

I once thought players were smarter than most gave them credit for. One thing social media has done is put that notion 6′ under. I’ve read a lot of stupid things from them since twitter started. More stupid than smart.

      • NinerLove says:

As far as players and Social Media go, I actually mostly agree with you. As a fan, I love when things like Twitter are used “correctly” by the players we love. However, since it provides such an unfiltered glimpse into these athletes, I often feel like it kinda kills the shine a little bit.

Some of them come off looking really good (Drew Brees is one who comes to mind) but you’re right in saying that a lot of them don’t.

Even in my initial post I mentioned the fact that not all of what Anthony Davis says on Twitter is often ideal so I do concede that point to you.

      • oneniner says:

DS…I don’t get your point when you say “Players shouldn’t say those things”…….are you saying they shouldn’t respond to the media???

……I am 100% with AD on this one…..he has every right to say it as he sees it…..

      • DS94everXev says:

        oneniner

I am saying that a player should not bad mouth anybody. No need for AD to reply if he has nothing positive to say about Grant or any other reporter. AD could have done a JT and not said anything or an AS and just say something nice about Grant quickly and moved on. Or he could have approached Grant in private to discuss the matter one-on-one having never involved anybody else.

We likely won’t know why AD said what he did. But make no mistake, JH/TB or someone with authority on the team spoke to him, thus the removal of the tweets.

  41. Grumpy Guy says:

Alex is working on his mechanics with an eye towards improving his accuracy. It will be interesting to see if that translate to a higher completion percentage or visible results on the field as the season gets closer.

I still do not believe that Alex can lose his job, other than by injury, this August. The only realistic way JJ replaces him is if Alex cannot get it done in the regular season.

  42. Pork_Bun_Luncheon says:

Grant thanks for FINALLY posting something. The lack of content on your blog has been very disappointing. Were you on vacation? On assignment? Sick?

  43. Stan says:

uh…OHHHH . Grant, your in trouble!..lol…Anthony Davis put out a who bunch of tweets ripping you..and then deleted a few. Your arch enemy BASG has the before deleted tweets.
I’m kind of surprise that A.D. is a regular reader of your blog. You have clout!

  44. LL49ERFAN says:

    Jordan23
You my friend are just a bully. Why is it when some one likes a player on the absolutely, positively, best franchise to ever play NFL football people like you have to rip them apart. I also like that smith resigned and Harbaugh has already stated that AS is the starter for this team in 2012. If you don’t like that then tuff *hit. Every time you blog it just shows how pathetic your football intelligence really is. I don’t claim to be an intelligent football fan but I fully support my team no matter who’s behind center

    • 23jordan says:

      LL,

How would you know what and how much I know about football? You don’t know a damn thing about me or what I know about football. You just admitted that you don’t know. I’ve not done that yet so just maybe I know a bit more than you. However, to each his own. Just keep it respectful. You seemed to have crossed the line. In case you had not noticed, this is a blog. People post their opinions. If you don’t like them, dont read them. Or conntinue to read and remain silent like you have been. If I don’t like Smith’s play, I’m gonna write it here like I’ve been doing for years. So maybe you better get used to it loudmouth. How about that?

    • ninermd says:

Ll…. I guess you love losing. I’m sure you also loved chilo Rachel a whole bunch too. Wow youre an impressive human being. Everything must be peachy in your world. Get real. Not every player is going to be fan favorites. I’m sure j23 roots for his team, maybe he’s sick of the same old experiment. Your new here. Follow along for more than one season before calling out OG’s. The bandwagon is full of you newbies.

      • oneniner says:

….this moron…keeps calling himself an OG…….lmao…..dude you are really sorrrry!!!!

  45. OpenMinded says:

Nice to see the players like Anthony Davis are commenting on this interpretation of the practice. The only interpretation that counts is that of the coaches who know the plays, routes, and instructions given for each practiced play. No one is asking for practice grades from the reporter. It’s a tough job to report on something when you don’t know what you are looking at. This is why no opinion should be written. As boring as it may seem, the only accurate reporting here would be to say the WRs ran 40 routes each, period. And that the QBs were each working on different aspects of their game. Sounds like Grant got it right though when he says Moss stole the show. All the other articles I’ve read so far do say the focus was on Randy.

  46. LL49ERFAN says:

What has society come to when people can’t agree to disagree. It’s pretty pathetic that fans have to rip each other over something none of us can do anything about. Hell AS got the s**tload booed in 2010 and HE’S STILL HERE so of you can’t stand seeing a particular player on the field the. Shut off the tv or change the channel, better yet follow some other team

    • ninermd says:

Why? One player doesn’t make the team. Players come and go. Some legends some stinkers. If you can’t handle sports. Then I suggest you don’t watch. I’m sure you would be excited if Ryan leaf was here for 10 years. Smh

    • 23jordan says:

      LL,

So we are supposed to feel sorry for him for getting booed in 2010. He got boed in 2010 because he STUNK! He will get booed in 2012 if he stinks! He’s stunk most of his career. If any of the other qb’s play poorly, they may get booed as well. It’s called sports. Yes, you’re anoth Smith apologist. You’ve got plenty of company here! Doesn’t mean he won’t be out of here in 2013!

      • Niners4lyfe says:

You mention smith in every post. Seems like someones got a little crush. Remember 1st grade when you used to tease the girl you liked. Well seems like your still stuck in grade school my man. Is is California but unfortunately he is taken. Maybe that’s why you’re so angry.

      • 23jordan says:

        Niners4lyfe,

Yeah, you guessed it. I’m really hurt and this crush has lasted for all 7 years he’s been here. You’re pathetic if you think it’s a crush my friend. The crush sounds like it’s yours because you are defending the man. How would you know where I’m stuck. However, it’s clear to me where your head is?? Right in Smith’s AZZ! Keep it there. He’ll be taking you with him next year to Jacksonville.

      • Niners4lyfe says:

You just can’t stop. It’s quite cute actually

      • DS94everXev says:

        @Niners4

        23J talks about 2 things

        1. Hating AS
        2. Hating those who like AS.

He thinks I actually read his posts. No need. I know what he says. It has not changed in years.

      • Niners4lyfe says:

Wait it’s been 20 minutes and no response…..maybe he finally has made good one his word.

      • ribico says:

DS, don’t forget the 4 other things:

        1. Making bets.
        2. Welching on payment of bets.
        3. Making vows to do X if Y happens.
        4. Welching on X when Y happens.

    • oneniner says:

…cmon LL49ERFAN you are not going to get into any sensible conversation from Jordan welcher and ninermd……..those two hate themselves so much they can’t help hating Alex or people who support Alex…..

  47. fesnyc says:

wow, Moss as a leader, i LOVE it.

great color on the practice play of the others, esp Johnson, Kaep and Crabs….(altho i’d worry whether the pejoratives – spaniel? intern? – do anything for your relationship with the players. i’m all for journalistic integrity but no need to push it, Mr Cohn ;-))

  48. Niners4lyfe says:

Grant Please just report the facts. This article was disgusting. Stop with the speculations and personal attacks on the players. It makes you sound bitter. Maybe it’s because you and your daddy never get any scoops. But actually ever think this may be the reason you have no “sources” other than maiocco and barrows.

Ginn was wearing black tights so now he is copying Moss? What a joke. What is this Joan Rivers on the red carpet. You call this journalism? You give Bruins a bad name.

Funny how when someone brought up Anthony Davis’ twitter rant you stopped replying on here.

    Get over yourself.

    • DS94everXev says:

      @Niners4lyfe

I’m hoping he and the PD editors are trying to resolve this issue between all of them.

This isn’t good for either party. Grant/PD (Grant represents)/AD/Niners (same reason, he represents the Niners).

    • 23jordan says:

      Niners4lyfe,

Wow, 23jordan still posts here? LOL. Not surprised to see that kid is still as clueless as ever. Jordan, how does it feel knowing that you’ve never had an accurate prediction in your life?

Its 2012 and 23jordan is still the laughingstock of the blog. Some things never change.

    • 23jordan says:

      Lsx,

Please don’t ever leave, Jordan! We’re so much better off with your infinite wisdom, you bring so much to the blog………LOLOLOL! Oh man, I’m sorry, I couldn’t even type that with a straight face!

You say the same ridiculous baloney every year, and you’re proven entirely incorrect every year. Every. Single. Year. How does that make you feel being wrong all the time? A smarter person would have given up by now and salvaged whatever dignity remained.

And what am I supposed to book? Your smug, pretentious predictions are never on par with reality. If you were a betting man, you would have been bankrupt a loooong time ago.

      • oneniner says:

        ….lol…….

      • ribico says:

        >>If you were a betting man, you would have been bankrupt a loooong time ago.

LSX, with his welching, if jordo were a betting man in the real world, he’d never get either of his legs out of a cast.

jordo’s the typical big man on the internet, every blog has one.

  52. Niners4lyfe says:

    Who are you talking to?

  53. LSX says:

Seen one Jordan post, seem them all. I swear you could dig up a post from any year in the past and it would be exactly the same, just substitute Johnson for whichever backup QB jordan had a crush on at the time. “SMITH IS GONE NEXT YEAR, BET ON IT!” Give me a break, LOL.

Jordan, saying the same thing every year won’t make it come true. At least you can say you’re consistent. Consistently wrong!

  54. LSX says:

I think Jordan follows the same outline every post:

    *obligatory anti-Alex rant
*lame insults towards whatever commenter he feels threatened by
    *pretentious, expert-wannabe analysis
*prediction that will be proven incorrect at a later date
*continuous use of the word “nuts”
*insulting another commenter and claiming they are in love with Alex
*two more predictions that will be proven incorrect at a later date
*remark about how awesome some career backup will be
*offers to make a wager, knowing he will never come through when he’s proven wrong
*uses his know-it-all NFL GM knowledge (LOL) to reinforce initial point
*claims to love women so people won’t question his closet homosexuality

I think that about covers it.

    • 23jordan says:

    • 23jordan says:

      LSX,

Do you have something against homosexuality? It’s not real difficult to recognize trailer trash up here. You seem to have the market cornered. Sure, you , DS and OneAlex aren’t the same person?

      • MidWestNiner says:

You talk about ugly exchanges and then use the words trailer trash? Real big of you there 23.

      • LSX says:

        You’re getting desperate.

Doesn’t it suck when someone smarter than you calls you out and makes you look like a fool, and this is all you can come up with? Now we’re at the point where you make yourself look even worse, all by yourself.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @midwest

obviously didn’t use my ottoprufreed……opinions no opions

    • bayareafanatic says:

      Ottos,
let me catch you up since you are new to the blog. There are several posters on this blog that have been here for a long time. Many of them have crossed lines that make things extremely personal.
Let me give you a list of the “players” and brief descriptions.
ONENINER- Public enemy number one. First class low life. 24/7 defends Alex Smith no matter what? Mysteriously disappeared when the Niners were pursuing Manning. Worst offenses were making jokes about another posters mother who had just passed away, and making fun of a popular female posters “saggy breasts”.

FDM- Also a Smith follower but not 100% sold yet. However this cat will turn his rage and anger on you in a second. Definitely has crossed the line several times to make things personal. Also definitely a candidate for anger management.

PRIMETIME- A cross between FDM and Oneniner. Difference is Prime has been busted out publicly by Grant for posting under other names. This is a practice used by unpopular posters that want to attempt to show that others share their views. Prime is poison and makes things severely personal.

LSX- A Jr. version of FDM. They also both coincidentally have names that are an acronym.

DS- AKA BS, DSL, X-ilicious. This annoying poster will try to wear you down with volume posting. Will also try to tell you what to think, how to think it, and how to write it. DS- AKA BS, DSL, X-ilicious is on here 24 /7 and posts at least twice as much as ANY other poster. Has positioned itself as a man, woman and even an alien. Grant on a couple of occasions has called this thing out for writing hundreds of posts on his blog. So have several other posters. To no avail. This cat has no self esteem or pride. Just keeps on volume posting. Most importantly, DS has the least amount of football knowledge on the blog which make “it” even more annoying.
CLAUDESBALLZ- Self appointed protector of the weak. 99% of Claudes posts are cutting and pasting what other posters write. He then attempts to make them look bad by poking holes in what they write. His opinions are unsolicited. Most of the time when Claude jumps in it’s to either protect Smith, or to protect one of the weaker posters on the blog. While intelligent, Claude is extremely annoying. Interestingly, Claude is not so much a Smither. I think Claudes jury is still out on Smith as well. Claude just doesn’t like to see anyone or thing picked on so he jumps in and protects while having hardly any original valid football topics to discuss.

HOFER- Hofer is a Smither. Through and through. While he is NOT vulgar, he is the king of Alexcuses. I actually admire his creativity at finding new reasons year after year as to why Smith fails. Bad coaching, bad receivers, bad line, bad system. Even after we got Harbaugh and Smith threw for league low yardage, Hofer said, “Harbaugh’s system doesn’t require Smith to throw for more yardage”. So while not vulgar, comical for sure. Hofer is so over the top on his backing of Smith that he has been asked a gazillion times if he is tied to Smith through friends or family. HE WON’T ANSWER LOL.
There you have it. Hope this gets you caught up regarding some of the blog players.

      • ottospellczech says:

Thanks for the rundown, been reading for a while so I had a rough idea of the players. Was mostly curious if there was some serious issues here or did all of you get to together for a beer and laugh about the big joke you were playing on the readers.

        Bay,

What’s your take on Jordan, MD, and yourself? You guys never “cross the line”, right? Or if you guys do “cross the line”, it’s only in response to an unprovoked attack, I’m sure.

      • LSX says:

Aw, I’m flattered. Bay, do you really think I get upset by the things that are said on here? Reading some of these comments makes me feel a lot of things (humor and disappointment mostly) but anger is not one of them. If someone gets mad because FootballFan1976 says something on the internet they don’t agree with, then that person has issues. Trust me, I don’t lose sleep over you or anyone else on this blog.

Like Rob Rodgers, I’m interested to hear what you think of yourself, jordan, TIM, and others. You claim to be objective? Prove it.

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Rob,
you must be new i don’t recognize the name. Yes that is correct. In regards to myself, I attack as a response to an attack. I seldom if ever attack first. I…. am a finisher: )

      • Prime Time says:

But of course Bay would paint a picture that says he never crossed the line. Otto keep reading and you will know who are the real fans and the real haters are.
As for you Bay, keep discrediting yourself with your vivid descriptions of all of us, all those people you described, are people who have crushed you time and time again on this blog, your just sour grapes!

      • bayareafanatic says:

Prime, you and Oneniner are the Tanya Hardings of this room. All anyone has to do is look back in the archives to see your venom up close.
And yes you attack first and often. At least own that part of it. If not that’s ok too. I don’t expect you to be a scumbag yet be accountable for your actions as well….

      • jgwindsor says:

        damn didn’t make the list

      • Hoferfan67 says:

Bay, is your value here adding *more* to the drama??

This blog article is about RMoss and the veteran players update. You still haven’t discussed the draft, but you take time to write this nonsense? I’m the one that taught you to back your comments with fact, and now you misquote me! You are a piece of work! lol

      • Latino Heat says:

Im new on this blog and its funny how Bayareafanatic and 23Jordan call themselves fans and only retaliate when someone comes after them. That is so far from the truth, its comedy central. Come on guys, call it like it is, your posts are nothing but instigating and negative, who really wants to say those things and hear those things when this is a FORTY Niner blog?

      • ninermd says:

That was a hall of fame post. @ Otto.. Although I haven’t agreed with some of these guys outlook on the never ending smith saga. I’ve offered to have a beer with some at the tailgate party’s. I can’t take different opinions to serious. I’d be in prison. Lol except one niner…. He is the truest form of a blog low life there is. There is no way on earth I could ever be seen or even sit with a dude like that. Jail I’d be a going. Hospital he’d be a going. Most of the others bay is talking about at least have some class. Hoff by far has the most, even though he is the king of Alexcuses. :-) lil dig Hoff. Lol

      • Bayareafanatic says:

Latino heat, you talk a lot at me for not knowing me. You are an east bay guy huh. Hayward?

      • Latino Heat says:

Bayarea i just call it like i read it, the truth is the truth and your a negative dude, that is a fact.

    • Adam says:

      Nice name! Like it. :)

  60. Fourth & Alex says:

Just pay Joe, Jerry & Ronnie to stand quietly on the sidelines all training camp and practices will get better.

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

Fun thought, Fourth! Steve might be a good addition, too (we’ll put Jerry and Ronnie between Joe and Steve!). I remember listening to Steve on KNBR’s podcast once, and he was talking excitedly about how they used to say at the beginning of practice, “The ball does NOT touch the ground today”, and then they’d make it happen. I think we might be back to that level of quality players.

  61. DS94everXev says:

    @oneniner

“you are just has bad as everyone..(except oneniner)…”

    Only you can say that.
    : – )
‘People always are after me to know how I differentiate between you and say 23J and bay…they don’t write the “except oneniner” part. They don’t recognize at all about how they may look to some thinking that they are some kind of angels.”

DS, have I ever called myself an angel on this blog? I dare you to find it.

You create your own problems around here (always have) with your incessent long novels that usually go nowhere, then after you get ‘smacked’ around for a few days, you play the ‘sympathy card.’
Running to ‘oneAlex’ for some support tells us all we need to know about you two. Hahahahahaha!

    • DS94everXev says:

      AES

Your post was longer than my post was. Just saying.

And I actually was not including you in that group at all. But if you feel like you are, then all the more power to you!

      • AES says:

DS, we ‘kinda’ agreed to a truce some time ago. We both said we were ‘cool’ with each. I was ok with that.

But then you come on here to defend ‘oneAlex’ who is the biggest ‘hater’ on this blog, and your credibility goes down the crapper.
DS, since when does a person who calls people ‘tard’ need someone to defend them? Even the ghost of Jonnie Cochran couldn’t defend this clown.

If you want regain any semblence of crediblity and respect around here, do yourself a favor and cut this loser loose!

      • DS94everXev says:

        AES

I told you that I will interact or not with whomever I choose. You had to be ok with that. Do I tell you who to interact with? No.

Deal with who I interact with or not. You don’t own me. I decide what I do. You don’t.

And YOU are the one bringing me into your fights with oneniner. Keep my name out of it. I come in when I’m tired of it.

Judgement time AES. This whole issue is yours. Not mine. Does your hate of oneniner overwhelm your desire to keep peace with me or not?

Look no further than this thread. Oneniner had commented about a different topic not involving you at all. I replied. Your name was never brought up….Until you got yourself involved. You say I get myself into all these problems? Well, I had a pretty good teacher (you) to show me the way now didn’t I?

  63. bayareafanatic says:

I watch Grant suffer fools. He gladly does it because even fools create blog hits that justify his existence. Look at football blogs around the country, 90% of them don’t get as many blog hits as Grant.
Grant is doing a tremendous job, especially for his age. As for AD calling him out, seems like AD got his panties in a bunch. Didn’t like the description Grant used when he mentioned him. Maybe AD should focus more energy on having less false starts instead of taking shots at a blog writer / reporter. Maybe AD is upset because he knows he is probably going to have to move to another position on the line simply because he’s not cutting it. Currently he’s nothing but another one of Hofer’s alexcuses as to why the passing numbers are below the NFL mendoza line…..

    • Gville49er says:

      Well put. Fully agree.

    • Adam says:

      I agree.

Davis telling somebody else how to do his job? Seriously?

I’ll just leave it at that.

    • jgwindsor says:

i was just in mendoza, Argentina….didn’t quite measure up but other parts were more to my liking like areas just south of Salta and south of Cordoba ….

      • bayareafanatic says:

Just for fun? I’d like to travel to Argentina sometime. It’s a lower priority on my bucket list, but still would like to get there one day.

  64. 5280high says:

Grant, your writing is horrible, uncredible and lacks any traces of objectivity. Crabtree and Ginn as the “cool people” and “looked up to”… umm what? Ginn’s copying Moss now cause he switched from white leggings to black… Davis squeeling like a child… everyone acting like star struck kids? Cause this team has never met Rice, Montana, or Young before smh.

Man the PD must be struggling if you and your dad are still employed.

*Spoiler alert* Grant raves about JJ all summer then posts a pathetic diatribe when he is listed as the 3rd QB on the roster.

  65. Gville49er says:

Look at how many of you are posting on this blog, and often. I read comments a couple days a week because I often appreciate what you have to say, and some of you have A LOT to say. I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with anyone because you look like middle-schoolers fighting on MySpace when you attack each other through a computer but nonetheless Grant is getting some serious publicity. His job is to get people to notice what he writes/says. I personally like this post and appreciate some of the background into daily practice that I never would’ve gotten. Well done Grant, Anthony Davis needs to focus more on pass protection and less on what is being written about him in voluntary workouts.

  66. Pork_Bun_Luncheon says:

*** A Call to All with Reason ***
Boycott Grant’s blog: no comments, no responses, nothing; until Grant takes proactive measures to clean up this cesspool of hate. Get all the name callers and bigots off the page!!! If you’re guilty, then clean up your act! That’s my spiel. Out.

    • Adam says:

Nice bit of German there at the end to emphasize your point. I see what you’re doing.

      Well played, sir!

I won’t boycott but I agree in general. All the nastiness needs to go away. There are two or three people here that go back and forth on each other ad nauseum. Kinda ruins the user experience.

      • Adam says:

I really don’t care who does what or who started what. You and Jordy just seem to go around and around and around.

Just wish you all would stop. It’s aggravating.

  67. Adam says:

How did we get back in to all the full-time drama? Some of you people need to get a room and be done with it.

Can we get back to football now, please?

    • rocket says:

Agreed. I can’t read this crap anymore. I like Grant’s blog but the comments are about 5% football and interesting and 95% flame war and Drama.

I just gloss over most of the comments now and try to find something interesting to respond too. It’s getting harder and harder.

      • Rusty_in_OC says:

Wouldn’t it be nice if this blog had the capability of letting us ignore certain posters? No matter where you stand with Alex or the coach or any other part of the team, it sure would be nice to be able to read some Niner-related news, opinions, etc., without having to wade through the personal venom.
I GET that some people live to argue and fight, but for the rest of us, it gets quite tiring. And I know for a fact, Grant, that it’s costing you hits.

  68. AES says:

    DS:
“Judgement time AES. This whole issue is yours. Not mine. Does your hate of oneniner overwhelm your desire to keep peace with me or not?”

Interaction is one thing, defending someone who makes it his hobby to insult anyone who doesn’t see Alex Smith with his sick extremism is a completely different thing altogether.

Like I said before, I ain’t going anywhere if you two want to continue your little games.

  69. Gville49er says:

And Grant just lost a follower. This is getting ridiculous. More often than not this blog becomes an area for people to bash on each while sprinkling in a few ideas about football here and there. I’m tired of it. Adios amigos, see you in February 2013 when we can all shut up and be happy about a Super Bowl Victory.

  70. exgolfer says:

Now I now why Jordan says to new, reasonable posters who, like any rational person would do, take him to task for one, or more, of the relentlessly off base posts he writes, that he’s not going anywhere and will be here long after they’re gone. It’s because a sensible person can only take so much. After a while, you realize you’re not dealing with a sentient person, and, well, you just give up.

  71. Jack Hammer says:

Business took me to Santa Clara today, and after my meeting finished decided to check out the stadium. With all of the construction in the area there is now a parking lot right next to the practice field. Was able to watch through a hole in the green fence for about the last 25 minutes of practice.

    Couple notes:

I take back some of my doubts regarding AJ Jenkins. He looked smooth and was noticeably better than all other receivers in attendance.

LaMichael James was lined up everywhere in team drills, WR, RB you name it.

Chris Owusu had a couple of drops on balls right on his numbers.

Pretty cool stuff in all. Brought back memories of preseason trips to Tickling back in the late 80′s.

    • bayareafanatic says:

      : ) Awesome…

    • OREGONINER says:

      @Thanks Jack!

    • LSX says:

I’m trying not to get my hopes up, but I’m very excited about Jenkins.

    • NickRow says:

      @Jack
      Thanks for sharing.

    • Grant Cohn says:

      You should have said hi!
I agree, Jenkins looked good. I think he only dropped two passes all morning. He caught balls over his head, below his knees and behind him, and he even made a diving catch.
He does look like the skinniest receiver here today, and LaMichael James is the smallest football player I’ve ever seen, but he’s unbelievably quick. At the very least he’s going to be a good returner for this team.

      • Bayareafanatic says:

Guess you never ran into Dexter Carter.

      • Grant Cohn says:

        No, I never did.

      • Jack Hammer says:

I was afraid of what Harbaugh might do if he saw me peaking through that fence.

Agree with you on James, he is short but built. I cannot wait to see him in action. Jenkins just looks so smooth and quick in person. Looked like he got a bit winded out there today. Better hurry up and hit those hills with Jerry Rice.

    • undercenter says:

      Thanks for the insight Jack

    • claude balls says:

      @Jack:

I am very jealous. Thanks for the report.

    • Stan says:

You paint a great picture..Like I was there.

    • rocket says:

Good stuff Jack. Glad to hear the rooks are looking good.

    • Adam says:

Thanks, Jack! Good stuff. You need to have more meetings down that way. :P

    • ribico says:

But Jack, who was wearing what color tights???? :P

      • Jack Hammer says:

Sorry Ribico, no tights today. They were all in full 49er uniforms sans pads. Maybe Grant’s post yesterday got the attention of more than just Anthony Davis : )

      • Niners4lyfe says:

Seriously. ….and whom was drooling over who….

  72. Stan says:

I hope you appreciate Grant that I suffered a vicious, vicious attack -lol- on the BASG guy blog because I defended your right to have an observation other then “He ran gingerly from a sore hammy” like the deepest observations of most sports writers.
    But,I think I will live.

  73. old coach says:

i hate to quote alan iverson but “its practice, i’m talkin bout practice”

lets not read too much into a qb playing catch with a wr. now as a retired coach i loved players who practice well but many of them could’nt carry it over to the game and just as many practiced crappy but are great in the game. lets just wait to condem or cannonize anyone till at least the preseason

  74. J Ski says:

Smith always looks great in off season and practice. During the games….ummmm. 49ers don’t have the QB position on lock just yet. Looks like we have to see if JJ or Kaep can step up this year or next.

  75. Chris says:

Is it just me, or is there a condescending tone to this article?

  76. Island breed says:

Haters n unbelievers Of jj are dcattering like cockroaches we won’t name them but u know who u r lol now just an actual fare n open comp at QB n jj should bring US back To respectability.

  77. SanFranAddic says:

You all accuse Grant of writing stories and leads just to generate hits on his blog, but isn’t that his job? If you are such experts at the craft, start your own blogs and see how many people go out of their way to read your stories and analysis.

You say you won’t be coming here anymore? I say hooray!! Your self-righteous indignation and self-important gas-bagging will not be missed.

  78. snarkk says:

“…trailing the great wide receiver around the field like a spaniel…” Not sure that was really a necessary description. Seems kind of silly, and a clear put down, where there’s no context around it to answer why such a put down was appropriate. Not very good journalism…
