On Saturday afternoon, Jim Harbaugh addressed the media in the media tent. He explained how the four captains were chosen and why TE Garrett Celek made the team, but Harbaugh declined to explain why Scott Tolzien made it over Josh Johnson. Here is the transcript, courtesy of the 49ers.
Do you guys have captains?
“We voted for captains, yes. [RB] Frank Gore on offense, [LB] Patrick Willis on defense. They were selected by their team last year. That’s a two-year term. If they’re back, then two additional captains are voted on by the team. The team voted on defense, [DT] Justin Smith and Patrick Willis, and on offense [QB] Alex Smith and Frank Gore. Those are our four captains.”
Do you do pick special teams captains week-to-week?
“Yes. Congratulations to those men. There is no greater honor than to be elected captain by your teammates.”
How does the voting process work? Is it secret, is it hands up?
“It’s voted on by the team. Then, myself and the first round pick and the second round pick count the votes in an anterior room. The only people that vote are the players.”
So Willis and Gore are not eligible next year?
“They have a two-year term. Next year they would have to be – it’s like the President of the United States, they’d have to be re-elected. I think we’ve plowed that ground as far as we can plow it, other than that we feel great about our captains. This is a great group of captains.”
How did Justin Smith react to it since he’s such a no-nonsense, hard-working guy? What did he do?
“I asked him to come up and say a few words to the team. He said he’d keep it short and sweet, and said we know our goals, we know what we want to accomplish. It’s all about going out there and doing your job and taking care of business. Then he sat down.”
Still no C’s on the jerseys?
“C’s on the jerseys, like in hockey? No.”
When you look at Justin – you want each guy to get better every day obviously – what does he have to get better at?
“There are so many things that encompass. The ultimate compliment that you could give to a football player, the ultimate compliment that any true competitor who plays the game would be proud to be known as, and that is Justin Smith is a football player. He is a football player. That encompasses a lot of things. That encompasses athleticism, speed, power, strength. Somebody that plays with effort, bend in their knees and on and on and on. A lot of the evaluators, personnel people, describe a player in a lot of adjectives. The one that encompasses all of it, is he is a football player. Now, it’s also true that as a football player you are either getting better or you are getting worse, you never stay the same.”
What was it about TE Garrett Celek that earned him a roster spot?
“We thought that he could help us win this year. We thought that he could help put us in the best position to win this week, the next game. We feel like he’s a good prospect for the future as well. He earned it. As we said early on in this process, it’s going to be a meritocracy here. Those things are earned out on the field. Did enough in our eyes to earn that spot.”
He didn’t have a lot of catches in college. Is that something that he got better and better at as the offseason, as training camp went on?
“Yeah. He did a nice job catching the football. Had some real eye-opening catches in training camp and preseason games. Did a nice job. I’m sure this has taken place, and it’s my hope that every man on the 53-man roster and the eight youngsters that are on the developmental roster, this will not be the ultimate day of this year. This isn’t their ultimate goal, the high moment of their year. They’re putting a plan together to stay a part of the San Francisco 49ers, this fraternity that goes back to the 1930’s, a group of men playing in the National Football League.”
In that aspect just looking ahead at the roster you have is there any flexibility outside of any surprising injuries could there be some shuffling around at all in the next two to three weeks?
“I’m sorry you kind of said that fast.”
I’m sorry could there be any shuffling from the practice squad, on the practice squad, something like that?
“Those possibilities all are possible. I’m not going to speculate. All these decisions we make, and will make, will be made with one purpose and that’s do we feel like it helps us win games, puts us in a position to win games. That’s what all those decisions are based on.”
You want a lot of competition obviously and a lot of eye balls on that number three quarterback job. What gave QB Scott Tolzien the nod?
“I won’t delve into every aspect because really there was a lot of body of work. There was a lot of thought that went into it. I think about the quarterback position in some form or fashion every day. I’m not going to get into comparing the two of them. It seems like somebody always gets diminished when you do that. I can’t tell you how close it was. It was a dead heat, both those players made a great argument for both of them to help our team win on any given Sunday. It was close in the beginning, it remained close all the way through and it was a tough decision. Both played extremely well.”
Yesterday, for the first time, final cuts were at 6 p.m. Did it go up until the eleventh hour for you guys?
“The eleventh hour?”
Was it a continual talk, dialogue throughout the day on that particular decision?
“No, it’s a full day. I won’t get into specifics about everything that goes on in that day, but it’s a full day’s work.”
When it came to the decision to keep three outside linebackers again, is that more you needed depth at other places you felt comfortable or felt like maybe you didn’t have the right fit for play that were in camp to add?
“You make the decisions on what’s best for the football team. What helps the football team win? And again, it’s a meritocracy. We’re competing. There’s going to be certain numbers at certain positions that you can field the team. And pretty much this team reflects that. And then you go in and play and see where you hold up, where the depth holds up, where the play holds up and keep fortifying your position the best that you can.”
On that topic, on that position, is LB Parys Haralson a guy that you would expect to have Week 1 against Green Bay?
“We’ll see.”
Is there any thought of getting TE/DT Demarcus Dobbs some reps at outside linebacker?
“That’s a possibility.”
Some of us thought RB Anthony Dixon was a long shot to make the roster in the spring. I don’t know if you felt that way or not? At what point did he really start to open your eyes?
“Just continual, during the offseason, his focus, his preparation. He was here every day in the offseason. He played. He competed. We’ve talked about it a couple of times, and I think it was just a consistent performance by him. Consistently good too.”
The fact that he added some versatility when he volunteered to step in at fullback, did that also help his cause?
“Yes. Yes that does. He’ll provide depth at the fullback position. And he’s been a core special teams guy for us. In a sense he became a three-way player.”
With Dixon staying, Tolzien sticking, they obviously have the familiarity aspect and so do a lot of guys on this roster that were on there from last year. How big of a role is that for you guys knowing, I think you have 42 guys back from last year’s team? And what does that mean for the season going forward?
“I think you can draw your own conclusions. We felt like we had a pretty good football team. You never know how it’s going to shake out. We brought a lot of good players into the mix here, this offseason and in training camp, drafted players, veteran players, free agent players. I think it speaks volumes for the guys that were on this team. It was a challenge for everybody. Everybody was put in a real fierce, competitive environment. Darwin wins. It’s the survival of the fittest. The strong survive.” [laughing]
In that aspect, last year seemed like it was a little more hectic because you didn’t have the OTAs coming into training camp to get so much in. Now looking back, did you feel a calmer sense or a more placid pace or did you feel it was just as intense this year? Or compare the two experiences so far, if you can.
“Compare this experience?”
This camp versus the circumstances going into last year’s camp.
“Well, I won’t go into real in depth comparisons. Placid is not a word that I would use. No. Ever.” [laughing]
Would you say maybe more calm?
“Not a big fan of that word either. [laughing] Really pleased with our team. And like I said, I think a lot of men should be proud that they’re on the San Francisco 49ers, that they made the grade. But again, if this is the high point of their season, then they’re doing themselves a disservice. They’re selling themselves short and they’re selling their teammates short. I’m sure that is not the case, that they are already formulating and formulated their plan going forward.”

JH knows this roster better than anyone, but I still saw Rueland making this roster over Celek – the drop machine.
CG,
I was impressed with Reuland as well. However, we didn’t get to see all the catches Celek made in practice that JH speaks about.
From what you saw 23, can you tell me who appeared to be better at blocking?
Jordo, if I may, I’ll guess your answer is:
“Alex didn’t block for sh*#!”
u know I’m playin
& MWN: pardon the interruption.
No problemo Tuna. I’d like your take on it as well.
Did you not vow to never return if Josh Johnson was cut by the 49ers?
Cut it Prime for once. Even better, try answering my question for me as well.
Midwest,
I think Celek might have a slight edge in the blocking. However, it seemed to me that Reuland was always in patterns and he did miss a couple of blocks in a couple of games. One glaring one in this game and the announcer spoke about it. Did pedigree help Celek get that job? His brother is pretty good.
MidWest,
I think it was the combination of blocking and receiving that won the position for Celek. He didn’t have many chances in the games prior to Thursday night, but he looked good getting downfield. As Jordan said he has the family pedigree, and seems to fit the Harbaugh mold.
The only run that Rueland is going to get is in Madden 13 this week til they update the rosters.
Thanks for your answers guys. Since I only watched the first preseason game, I couldn’t really give a fair assessment of Creek. It’ll be interesting to see if he gets cut to make room for Clark Haggans.
CG
He didnt make the squad for his catching abilities. If he is still on the roster during this season he will make his contributions as a blocker and special teamer
Personally, I would have been fine with whoever Harbaugh chose as the 3QB, and I do believe without reservation that it was a dead heat between them…..
BUT if you’d been asked to predict JH’s response in advance, this would pretty much have been it, but we don’t need to plow that field again.
GFN! ( Go freakin” Niners!)
Brotha
The amount of time/posts dedicated to the 3rd QB who likely never plays a snap for most teams all year long, and the discussin of a single pass play in an exhibition game on this blog is frighteningly funny.
Keep it in perspective guys. Preseason results mean nothing except for several fringe players. We all say that until the pre-season. Then act like it is the end all be all of the football world.
MidWest
I posted an answer to you but it seems to have gone to never-never land. Anyway the short answer is I didn’t see enough of Celek’s blocking to say anything. My guess is they maybe saw more upside, a bit better blocking, and maybe some ST utility in Celek over Reuland.
Thanks for your answer as well Tuna.
Off topic!!!! But my A’s are ROOOOLLING!!!!! Bernie style! WHEEEEW!
Thats ok MD I am watching the Oregon game. Freshman QB, first quater over 100 passing, two passing tds, one passing two point conversion 29 – 0
Ducks fan huh? Nice. As long as its not Texas or USC……….BOOMER SOONERS BABY! WHEEEW!
No worries about UC. Any team from LA to include the rams I have zero use for.
USC
Take it easy now. You forgot to say “Except the Mighty Lakers” =-)
Ah man your asking a lot. :)
50 – 3 with 7 minutes to go in the 2nd qtr, Oregon
Go Ducks! This team may be better than the 2010 team that went to the Natty. DeAnthony Thomas is a very special player. Very comparable to Reggie Bush when he was at USC. A definite Heisman candidate. LaMicheal James has stated that Marcus Mariota will leave Oregon as the best QB in Duck history.
The Golden Age of Oregon Duck football is here!
I am happy for the A’s. Jonny Gomes is the man!
+1
Question: Yesterday, for the first time, final cuts were at 6 p.m. Did it go up until the eleventh hour for you guys?
JH:“The eleventh hour?”
What a dick, like he’s never heard that expression before. If I was a coach I’d probably hate the media too but still that’s just unnecessary and clearly just trying to be difficult.
Intersting that Celek is the younger brother of the TE in Philly. Still think they need another OLB. Hopefully the OL plays better in Green Bay. I support whoever Harbaugh goes with, still questions on if Smith has the “it” factor. Hope he does well but I am glad the way the team has handled Kapernick. I really feel if Rodgers was here instead of Smith and he was the one thrown in the fire, he would have had a much harder time. He was able to be behind Favre and the Packers put good talent around him. Great to have options and I sure hope we beat the Packers. I live in a small town east of Chico in the foothills called Paradise. Because Aarron Rodgers is from Chico, Lots of new packer fans and they drive me nuts. Hopefully the Ninners can pull it off so I do not have to hear how wonderfull Aarron and the Packers are. Even My Mother in-law has bought bunch of packer gear, told her if she trys to give us any of that stuff, it will be used has rags to wash the cars and Dogs! Go Ninners!
Now that is a fan!
Screw the Pack.
AR hasn’t the mental fortitude to have gone thru what the Niners have put AS thru. The guy still cries about how he wasn’t the first pick. Who cares!
AR loses his cool. Look at the Niner-Saint game compared to the Pack-NY game. In both games, AR/DB team fell behind by a lot early on.
DB facing a better D and being on the road overcame that, and for about 1 minute had the Saints with the lead till AS-VD.
AR on the other hand, while having the benefit of playing at home no less, never did a thing to get the Pack back in that game. If not for the refs the Giants win by over 24-28 points.
AR lacks the mental toughness of DB. Which is a quality AS shares with DB. AR here wouldn’t have lasted or have quit on us. He doesn’t renegotiate his contract I bet.
DS
I agree, screw the Packers and I know you’re a big Alex Smith fan, but why bash Rodgers in order to make AS look good?
Nick,
It’s virtually impossible to bash AR to make Smith look good. AR is really good. Alex has yet to prove he can be good. DS, i respectfull disagree with you. AR is a pro bowler and Alex Smith has never even been considered in that conversation by anyone except you an JH. Yes, everyone knows that you trust everything JH says. However, Smith will get his chance head to head against the Packers.
Nick
msc had a post awhile back of a video where AR is still discussing draft day. 7 years later!
Who cares now? He has his whole career since that point. Won a Super Bowl. Virwed as possibly best QB. What does it matter what happened way back when?
About the playoff game, tell me I’m wrong. AR couldn’t do what DB did. And DB faced tougher odds (on the road, against our D). What DB did took mental toughness.
As for your AS comment, I don’t see what you’re talking about. DB didn’t start off in the best situation either. Just like AS. AR had the ideal start. Sorry. But AS and DB have shared some similar issues. Ones AR never has. You’re welcome to explain how AS and AR situations are alike while DB/AS isn’t. But I think they are.
@ DS
One point: yes AR is still trippin’ 7 years later. Brady’s still mad too; even longer. Competitiveness is in these guys, they like the motivation. Remember Joe, Steve & Bono with their silly tape toss games they played during slow moments on the practice field? They can’t even stand still without competing! Zall good.
Screw the Packers. Im so curious to see if the fake referees bow to the Lambeau home job that ALWAYS gives the Fudge-Packers four or five calls. Go back and watch the GB playoff game against the Giants last year. I tip my hat to the Giants for beating them when the refs tries to give the game to the Pack. Never seen anything like the advantage that Green Bay gets. I hope we crush them.
I enjoyed your story. And I agree with hating the Packers. But I cant agree with your opinion on AR being here. He just flat out has more qb talent than Smith. To badthe Idiot below me calls you a real fan ONLY because you feel that way about AR. Notice how its all about AS and comparing him to a true ELITE qb? Notice how this idiot blames the 49ers for what they “put AS through?”. Bs isnt a fan and shouldnt be commenting on anyones fanhood. UNLESS its an Alex Smith fan club. Pathetic!
Anyways my Mother in law still to this day gets crap from me my wife and Brother and sister in law for buying a Seahwks sweater when she went up north to my other sis in laws place. Claims she bought it for the game because it was cold. But still has it to this day. LOL She knows better than to bring any other team apparel to my house. And for the record she truly is THEEE best Mother in law a guy could ask for. So yeah. Use those rags for work related issues. I suggest Dog doo doo duty. lol Ive been to your town once awhile ago, Oroville and of course Im a legend in Chico. ;-) GOOOOO NINERS! THE PACK AINT BACK! F*** A.R AND ANY HILLBILLY PACKER FAN!!

It saves you a lot of time to just replace anything md writes with:
Blah, blah blah. Hate hate hate.
It works so well he thinks I’m actually reading his racist hateful speak. I’m not. It seems like I may because I know what he says. And the reply seems quite appropriate.
Thus no need to waste time reading any of it. I know it before he writes it.
Interesting note: I spoke poorly of no Niner, nor blogger. And he still goes off. Why the hate? Hater is what hater does.
Whats that Onelame? You supported S Hill and T Smith when they were our QB’s? WOW! What a superfan. Smith hasnt fed anyone crow. I know you’re the jealous type, but face it dude you cant have Alex all to yourself. I know it hurts your feelings that I keep it real and Im giving him his credit for playing good football FOR ONCE, but you’re going to have to learn to share Son. Oh and try watching a game for once. Its the same with you two Idiots
ALEX SMITH ALEX SMITH ALEX SMITH ALEX SMITH I HATE ANYONE BUT ALEX SMITH, BOO JOHNSON, BOO CK, ALEX SMITH IS GOD, ALEX SMITH ALEX SMITH ALEX 49ERS, ALEX SMITH!!!!!
Fact; Onelame skips questions and was punked and booted because of me and Telecat. And disappears when his blue eyed hero is in crisis, Talk about eating crow. HA HA HAAAAAA
It works so well he thinks I’m actually reading his racist hateful speak. I’m not. It seems like I may because I know what he says. And the reply seems quite appropriate.

bs says
Ha ha haaaa Yeah right you dont read my comments. Its been a whole year of you just guessing what I post and having the right responce. Amazing!
Now you say its the 49ers fault that Smith sucked. They put him through what????? Another classic line of bs from bs itself! You two are the best! Keep them coming. You’ve had other Smith fans and even GC call you two out. But Ill bet you dont even read this…. HA HA HAAAAAA Yeah right!
“Welcome to Paradise!” LOL, rebelscum74, are you my neighbor? Was that your mother-in-law I saw wearing the Packer gear down at the Safeway the other day? The one buying the cheese? LOL We 49er fans still outnumber them here on the “ridge.”
I hope not but it is possible, She lives off of Valley View and we live on Stearns off of Pentz, She was saying she has even bought Packer Slippers, Jammies and new jersey’s! Aarron even went to PV High School and her Grand son, My son, was part of the Paradise Section Championship team two years ago as a Junior. He tore is ACL in Spring Basket ball cam so missed his senior of sports but keeping busy and moving on! Anyway maybe my mother in law can not give up the green and gold and that led to packer fever! My nephew is now in Junior football! Anyway glad to have other “enlighted Ninner fans on the Ridge!!!!” Or true faithfull, Hey I know Aarron and his family and many fands were dissapointed that he was not picked by Nolan and the Ninners, including me, but hey my Grandfather was a huge Ninner fan so , I just gotta stay with the Red, White and Gold!!!!!
Right off of Clark and Nunnely. You’re not too far – but nothing is here in Paradise, LOL Sorry to hear about your son’s injury, but it sounds like he is on the mend which is good news. Is he going to play in JC or moving on to a four-year college? Good luck for your nephew in junior football, too. It’s been a while since I had any relatives play that I could go watch. Good times!
Anyone has a link to watch games online?
Grant no doubt frowns on links. All I will add is follow a cat named Greg Punzo on twitter.
Go, you might try
p2p4u dot net
or
first row sports
Homeland security shut those down but im sure more will pop up somwhere
Make sure you have some good anti-virus software before going to any of those internet links. I ruined a good computer doing that once.
……I thought 3-OLB on the roster last year was a risk?……
Update: Reuland and Owasu to S.D. practice squad.
Conflicting reports Reuland also said to have gone on to the Jets.No news on Josh Johnson.Raiders should take a peek a him.
That’s an error “Owusu”.
I thought Reuland was claimed by the Jets so he should not be on any ones practice squad unless he was cut in the last 12 hours!
Veteran OLB Clark Haggans expected to sign with 49ers today. Who goes to make room?
Probably Celek.
Or one of the safeties
I agree with Seeker, maybe Robinson or McBath could be cut.
Those would be the three main candidates.
I am not a fan of this signing. He has a DUI conviction that is awaiting league punishment. The team doesn’t know how many games he’ll be suspended. He is 35 years old, set to make 2.45 million with a $200,000 roster bonus. He’d be a backup on this team.
I understand he is a special teams veteran. However, I think there are better options available for less money at the backup role.
and they are?
I believe Bobby Carpenter from NE is a better option. He is 29, 6’2″ 250lbs, with 7 years experience. Scott McKillup was also cut and could rejoin the 49ers. Rennie Moore out of Clemson also wouldn’t be a bad option.
Jerry Brown would probably have the most upside for money spent. He was cut by Indy.
Doesn’t matter Jason. Haggans has signed and is now a member of the 49ers.
@ Jason
Way to come thru with suggestions, although McKillup is strictly an inside guy, not really what we need. Carpenter is an ok journeyman but does he get upfield? As Jack said, they signed Haggans, so they must have liked him.
I know Carpenter, he’s a great guy. Solid player too. It would have been nice to see him play for the Niners
According to MB, Haralson injury may be serious enough to require going on IR.
That would be a big loss. Fangio had mentioned a contingecy plan of Haralson starting in case Aldon Smith struggled as a starter. In any case, Haralson is solid against the run and not bad in pass coverage. His absence from the D will be felt.
It’ll be interesting to see if Cam or some other OLB is added the roster for the Packers game or if the Niners decide to stick with what they currently have.
What is an anterior room?
I don’t think JJ makes any NFL team before week 4 if he does make a team.
‘It was a dead heat’
But we decided to go with the white guy.
Oh Darn you are on to us! Yes, we went with the white guy. The caucasians have a secret society and agenda in which we’ve decided that we no longer want to subject the African American race to the gladiator game of Football. We’d much rather throw one of our own into the coliseum and subject them to the neurotrama of NFL football.
Here is why:
We are punishing each and every white family who voted for Barack Obama by pushing their children into the lion’s pit. We went with the white guy alright. He voted for Barack. Our agenda is out.
Maybe we can meet in Oakland and riot. Punish some honest shop owners who pay the taxes that support our welfare program and your internet connection at the library. We’ll teach them that you can’t cut a black man in the nfl when there are 704 cuts and obviously 704 white people who needed to be cut.
Our agenda is out. We went with the white man.
…..are you serious?……
oneniner
I believe Jason is being sarcastic. And in fact really feels quite differently.
This is a remark of a troll Jason. I understand your outrage but it doesn’t warrant your attention!
Jason,
Thanks but no thanks. His comment was inappropriate but yours was as well. Go Niners!
Hey Jason,
I remember you, you were in Friday the 13th. How’s life been?
I’m sorry it was completely sarcastic. It is as ludicrous as the idea I proposed. I took the bait and ran with it. My sincere apologies.
@ Hightop
You are correct, but sometimes something will just really get under your skin and its hard not to respond. I’ve fallen for it a number of times. This time, I’ll just remember the commenter’s screen name and discount anything he says in the future. A little peer pressure aint so bad……
This isn’t about color…. in the estimation of the coaching staff, Scott Tolzein is a better fit for the system should there be a need to activate the #3 QB…..I seriously doubt that the comment..”it was a dead heat, and we went with the black guy” would have been made, had Josh Johnson been the choice….you need to grow up….
I still think it’s a diversification thing (for lack of a better phrase considering the above) in that you have two QBs that are similar if you keep CK and JJ. If you keep Tolzien you have a pure pocket passer.
This also could be a ruse. You never know with this front office. It could be that people realize Tolzien is a pure pocket passer and thus there’s trade value. JJ, in his previous setting, was a known quantity and maybe can’t be easily traded. JJ had an excellent last game and who knows maybe under Harbaugh he flourishes. So Tolz could be bait and they’re banking on JJ not being picked up immediately. That’s my conspiracy theory for today.
The straight shot on it is that, in my opinion having played some, Tolzien has the better upside (eventually) if they are intent on playing the west coast offense. It fits Tolz better than it fit any of the other QBs. Better mechanics, better read and recognition, more decisive with decent accuracy (most of the time.)
Who knows.
…”Q: There has been a lot of talk in the offseason about your ability to operate a more wide-open offense this year. People talk about “taking the training wheels” off you. Obviously, you didn’t just throw screen passes last year. Does it bother you?
AS: I think it goes back to 2010, I really don’t care. That was kind of a spot where I hit bottom and said, ‘I’m not going to care about this crap.’ It was kind of exaggerated last year. You had three quarterbacks break 5,000 yards. The league is trending to passing, throwing up huge numbers. We’re different around here. Coach Harbaugh and his staff, we’re kind of old school a little bit. And we take pride in the fact of – let them try to pigeonhole me: ‘Oh yeah, he’s the manager. He throws check downs and screens the whole day.’ Let them do that. Let them walk out on Sundays saying that. It’s just fine with me. And depending on what we’re doing that week, it may be that we’re throwing a lot and it may not. I think that’s the beauty of what we’re doing around here, especially on the offensive side of the ball. We play good team football, it’s selfless football. I think that goes back to – you just do your job. The expectation level for me changed drastically in the sense that no one is expecting this make-a-play thing. I don’t get told that any more: ‘Oh, go make a play.’…”
So AS a good soldier. We knew that. The coaching staff is also not asking him to do much. In his own words,
I don’t get told that any more: ‘Oh, go make a play.’…”
Prime Time loser,
I am very sorry that life has thrown you a curv ball, and your social life is to defend AS, DS and One Lame, and bash other’s that don’t get a hard on like you when you see your number 11 play. You have become the village idiot on here, I actually feel very sorry for you.You are a real bore.
Fitzperv, I blast curv balls out of the park just like I slap haters like you around for kicks, your easy and dumb all in one.
Alex will win a superbowl in SF and you will be left holding your jock and a plate of crow wondering why you have been so negative. Dude my life is roses, your just an easy target I like to play with. I give you two minutes to tell me I live in my Moms basement, seen me on cops, or I am angry, Buwhahahahahaha!!!!!!!!
Neal,
It’s big news that Primate can hit curve balls. I didn’t know monkeys could play baseball.
Nick,
I like Alex. But I don’t like this quote. Is AS’ psyche so fragile that he can’t be challenged or pushed to higher expectations?
This is the way it looks on the surface. I guess Harbaugh does not want to put any undo pressure on AS. If this is Harbaugh’ intent, I can’t say I like it.
Every athlete likes to be challenged and pushed to reach their highest and optimum potential.
I don’t recall hearing players say “I don’t need to make a play.” I find this puzzling.
Nick
That quote their souns like Joe Montana talking.
Their you go again, the only person in the universe that compares Joe Montana, to the very successful and accomplished Alex Smith.
Neal
That’s absurd – comparing a HOF QB with one who’s only won one playoff game.?The same article that OneLatina quoted also stated
Does this make Smith more game manager than gunslinger? Perhaps.
AS and JH are OK with that because they’re smart enough to realize AS’s limitations. JH also understands that with an above average NFL QB, he can win big time and doesn’t have to ask such a QB to be a game manager. At the moment, however, JH is doing the best he can with a limited QB.
Nick,
AS has a temporary manpower contract, only a 1 year deal, I would love to see CK get some plays in this year, when AS fails in the red zone, perhaps we can try CK, he can be our Tebow, although CK can pass and run. A real threat and a waste for him to be a clipboard carrier.
A ‘temporary manpower contract’? Thanks for the laugh Neal. That’s a good one.
If anyone wants to learn the language of Dumbinese, just follow the two experts in Fitzperv and Nickslow. Crash course in 2 hours of how to flap your gums and make no sense whatsoever!

“AR hasn’t the mental fortitude to have gone thru what the Niners have put AS thru. The guy still cries about how he wasn’t the first pick. Who cares!”
@DS
DS, even if you were a certified phychiatrist you would not be 100% correct in your evaluation of Aaron Rodgers (lol).
Obviously your analysis of AR has one agenda; Make AS look good at any cost!
While you contend that AR does not have the mental fortitude to have gone through what AS went through, I will contend that had he been here, he may have helped us to reach a few winning seasons with a playoff thrown in long before AS did.
When it comes to AR you see the glass as half empty. I see an ‘elite’ QB with playoff and a SB resume! (lol)
Here’s some friendly advise DS. Let Alex Smith excel on his own merits, don’t put down other players in a futile/comedic attempt to build a case for Alex.
Oh, and here’s my analysis of AS; I don’t believe he would appreciate your criteria of putting down other (successful) players for the sole purpose of proping him up. Alex is much better then that!
AES,
Here’s the rub. AR clearly has the mental fortitude to deal with anything that comes his way professionally. Remember, he sat patiently behind Brett Favre and never uttered a negative word about Favre. On the other hand, when Smith sensed that the Niners were in pursuit of Manning, he hopped on a plane and flew to Miami to see the beach. Either way, it’s pretty dificult to make either one of these guys look bad. Why don’t we just look at their records and their numbers. There really is no comparison.
23J,
Forever to go into 49er folklore as “The Spring of Evaluation and Discontent”
Aaron Rodgers is an ‘elite’ QB.
I like what AS did last year, and believe he will have a great 2012-13 season. But he is not in AR’ neighborhood YET!
AES, Neal,
I’m curious to get a score of our game against Green Bay next sunday. I know its early but I’ll be looking for it this week.
Personally, after watching all of Green Bay’s preseason games this year. I can see that their run defense is hampered a bit. Bishop is out for the season and Raji sprained his ankle in the K.C. game. They got gashed in the running game against K.C. and I certainly believe we are capable of doing the same thing. We run for 180 yards and win by a field goal.
I agree Jordan, however I can’t even remember the last time we won a game in Green Bay, even when when we had great QB’s. Did Steve Young ever win a game at Green Bay? I wished we had a couple of games under our vest before we play them. Both QB’s are going to want it bad. Our defense will need to play lights out and our offense needs to be competent, no 1 -13 on third downs and Roman need a great game plan. We need to put heavy pressure on AR and make minced meat out of him. We can win with great defense and some luck.
49ers win 23-20 on a last second FG by Akers.
Jack,
Can Akers do that again? Kick 100 field goals. I didn’t like his last miss the other day. It was just one miss but I kinda got spoiled with the guy making EVERYTHING!
Neal,
You’re right, we’ve not won there or beat them since the T.O. catch I think with Steve Young. That game was here. I just know that their front 7 is suspect, highly suspect. Gotta make Benson put it on the ground at least once. He will, he has a history of that.
I’m worried about Brock getting targeted and killed by AR. I like our running game to keep them off of the field.
LoL Jordan. Akers should be good for another 30-35 FG’s this year.
I wouldn’t be overly concerned with Brock. He won’t see the field very often unless Goldson knocks out one of the other CB’s.
The speed of Bowman and Willis allows Fangio to stick with the base and Nickle defense for most of the game. I see the key for our D being the ability of Willis and Rogers to slow down the inside receivers.
AES
Didn’t much pay attention to the parts where I praise DB did you? You had a choice in focusing on which part. You chose the negative. What a shock.
You guys love AR too much. You compare AS to him WAY too much. When in fact AS has more similarities to DB. AS with JH will never have DB numbers. But DB has overcome more odds (shoulder surgery/SD giving up on him not that different from MN/MS giving up on AS). AR simply hasn’t. Given AS history here as a guy with the odds stacked against him for so long, and guess who I feel is more appropriate/hope for to compare?
Add the fact DB isn’t discussing how SD gave him up every day, and I just like DB the man more.
That’s the point DS. There is NO comparision between AR and AS. Only in your world bud (lol).
You can compare AS to DB on the injury misfortune. But it abruptly stops there!
But hey DS, you can compare AS to Tom Brady too. Afterall, I’m sure they tie their shoes the same way (lol).
AES
Do you read?
AR comes up all the time. People compare AS to him ALL the time.
Funny how you don’t reply when AS is put down while fans compare him to AR. How often have you said to not compare the two to anybody but me? You’re just picking fights.
Here’s is the rub. Jordan, I would of loved to of been a fly on the wall and see if Mike McCarthy had any say when Mike Nolan who knows about QB’s as much as DS, had any say to choose AS or AR. Or was he just a yes man to Nolan.
DS – I think you just need a good laugh this morning. :-)

Thanks for the laugh Crab. That is hilarious.
Nick – No problem bro. That’s one of my top 5 movie scenes ever.
Only 7 days until we invade Lambeau field.

“Ha ha haaaa Yeah right you dont read my comments. Its been a whole year of you just guessing what I post and having the right responce. Amazing!”
@MD
DS has reached new levels in one day!
First he’s a ‘phychologist’ (saying Aaron Rodgers doesn’t have mental fortitude)
Now, he’s a ‘telepathic’ (saying he doesn’t need to read your posts because he knows what you are saying).
Wow, we are not worthy to be in DS’ presence (lol).
Its an Alien. Remember? SMRT Smart. lol

AES, Neal,
“I’m curious to get a score of our game against Green Bay next sunday. I know its early but I’ll be looking for it this week.”
@23J
As I mentioned last night, the 49ers will go into this game (and likely every game) with a ‘chip on their shoulder.’
They know in their heart of hearts that they would have been SB champions if not for a couple of costly mistakes.
49ers W 28 -10
AES,
I hope your right, I can see us score 28 points but I can’t see Green Bay scoring only 10.
AES,
10 points from the Pack at home on opening night. I wish!
49ers 26 packers 17
Md,
I don’t like that number bro. You got 4 field goals in there. Thats red zone inefficiency!
Naa Im thinking 3 td’s and 1 FG and a Saftey, YES a safety. We will start slow and weather the storm in the 1st half. I see the Pack up 10-3 in the first half. Then the Offense explodes!
Harbaugh is a master of saying n0thing. He’s a cool guy.
As long as he keeps winning…
You guys want optimisum – try this one on for size. 45-28 Niners. Alex throws 4 td passes and spreads it around Crabs, Moss, VD, and Manningham. Gore and Hunter each run for one and of course Ackers kicks one field goal. Packers come away shaking their heads saying can anyone beat this team. Ok my head might be in the clouds but who gives a s**t, we win!!
(lol) Love it Undercenter! Especially the Alex prediction. But a score like this would definitely put the football world on notice!
Under,
One word, WOW!
…A. Rodgers suck……Alex is way better than AR……A. Rodgers could not have survived what Alex went thru as a niner……..
…….3 seasons on the bench and 4 good seasons, 1 SB wins is nothing…….
…..give Alex the same tools and I bet he has 2 SB by now…..
(Hahaha!) Good one ‘one-latin!’
…glad I provided a lil joy to your pathetic flip flopping life…….
Says the guy that does nothing with his life but act like an a$$hole.
Whatever you say, one lame, your thinking with your weiner instead of your brain, because you get so excited when you think of Alex Smith.
OneNiner,
I agree with you. Alex is the man. AR is a joke. AR couldn’t play through 13 offensive coordinators, 5 broken shoulders, no wide receivers. No footwork coach, no confidence coach. No head coaches. And as we found out this year, no agent.
Alex Is KING! Offensive player of the year in the NFL. ALL PRO!
Whatt???? Are you Driking again???? Reality check!!!!
But yet he picked AR to beat smith and the niners next week. Who invited this guy? Que the circus music for this clown.. do do do do
Do do do doooo dooot….

Go play your Madden and figure out how to make AS throw more accurate bud (lol)!
Is Michael Crabtree really Latino Heat? Did I miss something?

Not exactly an All in statement is that AES?
Take that up with EA Sports DS.

Seriously not trying to pick a fight DS. I just find some of your comments completely open to criticism (lol). Let’s just say that you have managed to make yourself a n obvious target.
And I don’t recall to many people making the AS, AR comparision as you say, except for the standard rebuttals against your comedic comparisions (lol).
Well, I got my answer. “No.”
You never read “If we had AR…” ?That is the definition of comparing AES. If we had that, we’d be this. type remark.
Or your memory is shot.
You guys don’t get it. If you think AR is better and we got him, what on earth makes you think he stays here?
After all, our HC stank. New OC every year. How many QB’s have ever stayed with the same team who have done what the Niners have done to AS signing 2 times since his draft and negotiate to stay?
None I’m aware of. Using everybodys favorite thing here, statistics, the odds are stacked against AR having stayed here. If you don’t think that, you have no right to use stats because you don’t understand odds.
If he is better if he came here, he dumps the Niners, moves onto a new team and kicks our butt. He doesn’t stay here. He leaves. Instead of the AR idolizing, you’re hating the jerk for leaving this mess of a team, getting to a functioning team, growing/learning and letting us know about it every time we play him.
Think AR wouldn’t have minded becoming a FA and going to AZ with LF to damn us 2x a year the last few times AS was a FA?
Stop dreaming that with AR we are better. He may still have become what he is, but he isn’t doing it here. He leaves the Niners.
Sargent Friday (Dragnet); “Only the facts sir, only the facts.”
You live in a world of hypotheticals DS. There’s no room in that world for me bud (lol).
AS is not in AR’ league (no matter what formula you use). But with all due respect to AS, I preface that statement by saying; Not yet at least. The final chapter has not been written on AS and when all is said and done, AS may prove to be better than AR.
Like I said earlier, let AS excel on his own merits. Your poor and comedic comparisions don’t do him any justice whatsoever!
>>You live in a world of hypotheticals DS.
This entire blog is a universe of hypotheticals, AES.
FACT: AS is our QB. AR isn’t.
You have put up quite the hypotheticals yourself AES. “If AS does this… we’ll be that”. Is a hypothetical. You/others never said anything like “If AS takes more chances, he’ll take the next step and become elite”? Learn the language. or to read. Stuff like that is said ALL the time. And you’re fine with those hypotheticals. By the way, I said the Pack wouldn’t be in the title game when they were undefeated. People cried about it. They weren’t in the title game though were they?Maybe I’m not wrong as often as you hope I am.
Did you check out what AS said in the sfgate article about what kind of player he is/isn’t?
FACT: AS isn’t the style QB you want. Support him or leave. Because that is the type of QB JH wants. If he isn’t, he never has AS sign last year. We don’t win 14 games. Keep those FACTS in mind while watching old TV shows.
DS,
Peyton Manning was the kind of QB Jim Harbaugh wanted. Alex SMith was the QB he got stuck with and is making the best he can of him. That’s the real truth.
Jordon, how did Harbaugh get stuck with AS? He easily could’ve gone with someone else.
My apologies for misspelling your name Jordan. Poor proof reading.
Somebody has to check their timeline.
JH was stuck with only Carr and CK. AS wasn’t on the team.
In fact AS had had it with the Niners. Poole of Contra Costa Times interviewed AS as he cleated his locker. It was clear to him that AS was moving on, having no desire to remain.
It was a lot worse than many here think. Not only did AS stay, JH had to convince him to stay. Their hope for years was about to come true. And JH screwed them out of it and the Niners into a 14-4 season.
DS I think haters like 23welcher think that if they repeat the same lies over and over again that maybe, hopefully, it will come true.
To think that one person can make up so many predictions and be wrong everytime, has to be a new world record. They have counted AS out so many times, but he is a winner no matter what. Like AS says in the sfgate article “I don’t care”.
Sean,
JH did go after someone else, Peyton Manning. He didn’t realize that Peyton Manning was going to go after someone else. You realize that JH picked Alex Smith up from the airport coming back from Miami where Alex Smith left a 6 year $60 million deal on the table to consider signing with the Niners.
Harbaugh picked Smith up from the airport and I they went to dinner and made up.
Funny how DS keeps saying that JH had to convince Smith to stay. You have no factual bbasis for that statement DS. What we know for sure is that JH went to Alex to find out whether he wanted to be a starting QB or did he want to be somewhere holding a clip board with a baseball cap turned around backwards. Those words came form Harbaugh himself. That is not an assumption.
Alex may have wanted to leave, but lets remember that Alex Smith was a free agent with nowhere to go when JH arrived. So, in essence, the truth is, they both needed each other. Alex found out how wanted he was by the entire NFL last year when he tested the market. Ah, no takers.
Sean, JH clearly expected to land Manning, or else he may not have talen the chance of jilting Alex and having him scurry to Miami. If we had gotten Manning, we wouldn’t be having this conversation about Smith because even the Smithers know that Alex wouldn’t be here. Harbaugh made nice with Alex because he felt like Alex was the next best option to Manning. You do know that right? C’mon Sean, everyone knows that.
23welcher, everything you just wrote is a terrible lie and contains no fact whatsoever. Stop embarrassing yourself, c’mon man, no Niner fan is that upset or disturbed by one player?
BTW, did you not vow to never return if Smith was back with the 49ers this year?
Prime time,
I’d like for you to tell me what about my post is not true? I’m not calling names anymore. My apologies to you for any names I’ve called you in the past. I’m going to enjoy my football season and allow you to continue to be immature if that’s what you choose to do. Read your posts and see how silly you look when you’re calling names and trying to antagonize someone. I’m done with that. Tell me what was not true if you’d like. If you need to continue with the disrespect, save your breath. Nobody here is really interested in that. I finally learned it, you should too.
Disagree if you’d like, but prove what I’ve said is a lie.
Jordan,
Prime Time does not have the abilty to not name call. He is a very unhappy, miserable and angry.
Sean,
No big deal my man with the mis-spelling. It happens. Give me a score for Sunday at Green Bay?
Ill tell you what’s wrong with your post, your reputation! If you think people on here are simply gonna forget your past rants and hateful comments directed at Alex, your dreaming. I mean your still promising and making the exact same predictions as last year!
This new outlook of yours is just another one of your lies. You know the one where you promised to leave if Alex was back with the Niners? Josh winning the job in camp cause Alex’s ceiling is in his helmet, yeah those things that never came close to happening!
@neal, yes I name call, but only to the morons who come on here and don’t talk football and throw out the same, boring hate towards Alex. If you have a problem with that and think I’m angry, well son, get in line!
Prime,
We have alot in common because you are the number one blog moron on here, and all you do is defend AS,One lame and BS, your football knowledge is limited, which means it is next to nothing. You unhappy camper. Did you pick up your social sercurity check last week?
Prime Time,
You’re confused. I’m not looking for forgiveness dude. I could care less what people here think about me. Fact of the matter is, this is a blog. Nobody knows or gives a damn about each other here.
I’ve got more negative things to say about Smith when and if he plays poorly. My opinion or position about him has not changed and you deendig him and calling names isn’t gonna change that. If you think I’m looking for vindication from you, you’re mistaken. Hell, maybe you’re Alex Smith. That would explain you defending him. If you are Alex, I’m letting you know that I don’t like your game and I never have. If you aren’t more agressive this year, you won’t be here next year.
My reputation won’t pay my bills on a blog. I can live with whatever you think of me. You’re not exactly a shining star up here either buddy. Might want to read a few of your posts sometime. Kinda sad. I told you thats what I did. You should try it. Good night and good luck with that. i think I’m done with your posts. Keep following me with all the negative energy you like. Everyone else here calls it immaturity.
Jordan, saying Smith was the next best option and saying Harbaugh got stuck with him aren’t the same. The Manning thing didn’t work out so he choose to bring back Smith. He could’ve went with Kaep or JJ or someone else.
I don’t have a score for you but based on the history in Lambeau, I’m not gonna be surprised if they lose.
On second thought, 38-27 but it’s a flip of the coin as to what team wins. I think it’s a possible NFC championship preview.
23welcher, you will always be a loser with that attitude, blog or real life, you are who you are. Good luck pal!
Fact DS believes that AS is better than AR.
Fact DS always compares AS to JM, she claims they are similar.
Fact DS believes Fouts and Marino are not elite QB’s
Fact DS knows absolutley nothing about QB’s.

Neal stop talking, your all mumbled in Dumbinese!
Prime you speak Smithinese which is the lowest form of language.
That’s right and Alex is going to lead us to a championship! Whether that’s this year, or next, or after next, I will be on the Alex bandwagon and you will be on the short bus eating crow!
FACT: I know how to read and I know that JH says AS is a Pro Bowl QB and is “clutch”.
You apparently lack these very basic elementary skills. Of course I knew that before your post.
You think I will listen to you over JH? Not happening.
Such a hypocrite BS,
You bash MC all of the time and JH say’s he has the best hands he ever seen, now you know that is BS, BS and you also know not one other coach in the NFL or GM thinks that AS is elite or clutch, if that is true another team would of pick him up last seasonb. He had no options and you are as gullible as it get’s.
FACT
Neal can’t go a day without being a jerk.
FACT
Neal can’t help but to bring me up into his conversations. Interesting how I don’t much bring him up out of the blue nearly so much. Does neal have a crush on DS?
yeah. he does. How sweet.

Fact- I have no crush on you DS, your just a creapy clown, and your football knowledge is fictional and distorted, Crush on you, I would rather drink vomit.
Prime slime has a crush on you DS, and you both have a crush on AS, maybe you can have a threesome.
Well said Jordan, their are two blog buffoons on here, one is DS but she is harmless and then you have Prime, you don’t need to be Dr. Phil that Prime is very unhappy in life, probably never had a meaningful relationship with women, no friends and promotions at Big 5, where he works, have past him by.

Is this an admission that you believe that AS is on the same level as AR?
I admit that there are many hypothetical scenarios here, but comparing AS to AR, or worst yet JM is off the charts (lol).
AES
Then you don’t just deal with facts then do you?
Except this one. You cornered yourself into a hole you can’t get out of.
And since one hypothetical is as real as another (meaning none are) what you meant to say was:
“I disagree with you DS.” But you wanted to sound cool and pick a fight. So you write what you did. A pattern of yours. Just like md has patterns, so do you.
PS I knew exactly where your “hypothetical” comment would lead and I let you screw up. I knew because you’ve used that line of reasoning before. You tend to do that when other hypotheticals don’t match your own by the way.
Oh. Another pattern you have is trying to impress others, so you don’t keep it to “I disagree” You go beyond that. I know because you hardly ever keep it to “I disagree.” You need to add something to it because you think it makes you look smarter/better/more right/etc. It doesn’t. The “I disagree” approach would work much better and not get the discussion into namecalling which you claim you don’t do. But you are here to fight, so you do as you do.
No DS, I meant to say exactly what I said!
There IS no debate on whether AR and AS are comparable.
But ok I’ll work with you here.
1. DS, I disagree with your assertion that AS compares to AR (lol).
2. I disagree that you have a phychoanalysis evaluation of AR’ ‘mental fortitude.
3. I disagree with your comment that our defense is not elite.
4. I disagree that your implication that AS was the reason for the team going 14-4.
Hopefully that was cordial enough for you (lol).
No AES, it is a statement that:
This entire blog is a universe of hypotheticals.
Pick any topic.
@ Rib
OK, hypothetically speaking….oh, uh I see what you mean, but only in theory.
Brotha, in theory and practice. mock drafts – hypothetical. Projected rosters – hypothetical. Projected upcoming records and game scores – hypothetical. Alex is going to be benched/cut/not resigned, Alex is NOT going to be benched/cut/not resigned – hypotheticals. Player x compared favorably/unfavorably to player y.
This is a blog of opinions. That makes them all hypothetical. For one poster to accuse another poster of “living in a world of hypotheticals” like it’s a putdown, when it comes to this blog, that is a guffaw.
DS:
“You have put up quite the hypotheticals yourself AES. “If AS does this… we’ll be that”. Is a hypothetical. You/others never said anything like “If AS takes more chances, he’ll take the next step and become elite”?”
@DS
Actually I have implied on more than a few occassions that AS’ needs to take more chances to reach the next level. But I’ll withhold the ‘elite’ reference until AS earns it. Nothing against AS. He just hasn’t earned that title as of yet.
Once again DS; “only the facts sir, only the facts.”
>>But I’ll withhold the ‘elite’ reference until AS earns it. Nothing against AS. He just hasn’t earned that title as of yet. Once again DS; “only the facts sir, only the facts.”
According to his coach, he HAS earned it. Who’s the hypothetical one here?
So rib, that this also mean that you were in with MC being the undisputed WR Starter throughout, since Harbaugh said he has the best hands he’s ever seen?
Afterall, shouldn’t a WR with the best hands on Harbaugh’ chart be his Starter?
>>So rib, that this also mean that you were in with MC being the undisputed WR Starter throughout.
Yes.
That is your battle with someone else.
Come on AES, you know how hard it is to win games in the NFL, for people to think that a defense and special teams alone can win 14 games are well, ignorant.
The term elite has been defined about a 1000 times over on here. Bottom line is Alex is a winning QB that fits the Niners way. He is elite from my perspective because he is a leader, tough, makes smart plays, plays the game like a point guard dictating the game and limits mistakes. Everything you need and want out of your QB. The jury is out, Alex is a winner!
” The jury is out..” You are right Prime. For many it still is with Smith…
14 wins Jack, most knowledgeable fans recognize the achievement Smith has made and the potential is unlimited considering the situation he is in now. He is a winner, any jury would agree on that!
Prime,
I never said that it was our defense and special teams that won 14 games. And I’m saying that AS did not win 14 games as some here have implied.
If you want to take a look at my history you’ll find that have advocated that a was a total team effort.
It’s the TEAM prime. Not AS, not defense, not special teams. It’s the TEAM!
What matters most in the NFL? Winning. The QB gets to keep his job on a daily basis by giving his team the best chance to win, and by actually winning. He did that last year. At the end of the year you look at the position and say, can we win with this guy? Well 14 wins later says they can and resigning him says that as well.
Alex did win 14 games, so did Patrick Willis, so do CJ Spillman, they were all part of it. Some more substantially than others but collectively, they won!
Prime,
Yes Smith had a good year last year, and THE TEAM won 14 games last year, not just Alex Smith. It’s all about THE TEAM, THE TEAM, THE TEAM. Let’s all hope THE TEAM can take last years success one game further.
That’s all I have ever said. The Team, the Team, the Team! Alex big part of that equation.
And by the same token the team (D/ST) were a big part of the teams losses not just last year, but prior years. Yet somehow AS was at sole fault for the losses and only a part of any wins. While other QB’s are more of a reason for their teams winning (AR) and barely bare any burden for any losses (GB/NY playoff game). All the while “team game” is being promoted about as if it was applied equally.
Something isn’t right about that.
Our defense under Manusky was not very good compared to what we have now. Some people like to forget those days, but not Alex. He is a memory people hold near and queer!
Trent Dilfer says hi.
Tell both Mike’s I say hello.
AES
I’ll try to go slow so that even you can follow the reasoning.
A hypothetical is when somebody says:
If x happens, y is the result.
Look at what you wrote:
“Actually I have implied on more than a few occassions that AS’ needs to take more chances (if x happens) to reach the next level (then y is the result)”
Thus your statement above is 100% hypothetical. Considering there has been 0 football played in the real 2012 season, and there have been a ton of posts, guess that means virtually everything here is a hypothetical. Predictions/drafts/cuts/starters/backups/coaching decisions are all hypotheticals.
If you meant to somehow insult me by stating stuff about my “hypotheticals” you are insulting everybody here. As well as yourself. Which isn’t that shocking of an idea. So, you see. There is logic behind it.
>>A hypothetical is when somebody says:
If x happens, y is the result.
DS, that is also a conditional statement where x can be factual or hypothetical. A hypothetical is a supposition (it’s origin from hypothesis). Naturally, hypotheticals are usually found in scientific method and the basis for further ongoing research to determine if factual or not. Of course, on football blogs that step is omitted entirely and posters position their hypotheses as God’s truth.
I agree it is pretty ludicrous when a poster has the arrogance to slam another poster for the crime of hypotheticals when doing the exact same thing himself.

Thanks for the English 101. Oh, and I know what I wrote. It may be 100% hypothetical, but it’s equally 100% opinion which is my absolute right to voice and what I absolutely believe. Look at that statement again, is there any truth to in what I said?
You are putting to much emphasis on the term ‘hypothetical’ rather then the truth in my statement bud. But I guess that will be included in your next English session (lol).
Do you think I’m the only person in the football world that feels AS must improve?
So here’s a little advise for you; Come out of your AS shrine room once in a while and open yourself to the real world (lol)!
DS:
“It was a lot worse than many here think. Not only did AS stay, JH had to convince him to stay. Their hope for years was about to come true. And JH screwed them out of it and the Niners into a 14-4 season.”
@DS
Is ignoring our ‘elite’ defense and great special team accomplishments last season something that you do on purpose, or do you really have “Alex Smith-tunnel vision?”
These type of comments by you is why IMO, you disqualified yourself as AS’ spokesperson a long time ago (lol).
Try reading the article first from sfgate. Unless you are implying you know more than JH and AS.
By the way, Fangio (he knows more than you as well) said our D was so great because our offense didn’t turn the ball over. You did read it, right?
And when the ST did, our elite D gave up a total of 10 points of a possible 14. And had it not been an OT they may give up 14/14 possible points. How elite was that?
Football is a team game. But I’ll let you go on thinking it isn’t. Elite D happens because they were never put in a bad situation. Explain to me what happened in the title game if we are so elite and that elite status isn’t at all dependent on offense (you call it AS)?
The moment they were put in that situation, they didn’t look elite. You said you only deal with facts. Well fact boy. Those are the facts. Stop making your silly hypothetical which disregards the role the offense plays in ensuring the D is elite. Explain how we gave up 10/14 possible points.
I’m waiting.
DS:
“Football is a team game. But I’ll let you go on thinking it isn’t. Elite D happens because they were never put in a bad situation. Explain to me what happened in the title game if we are so elite and that elite status isn’t at all dependent on offense (you call it AS)?”
@DS
Hahaha DS! You are incorrigible bud. Look at your 3:14 comments. You are implying that JH brought back AS after he was all but gone. In that same context where did you mention “team?” AS, as your context implies was our reason for the 14-4 record.
Now you selectively mention the word team. How convenient DS (lol).
OABTW, are you also implying that our defense is not elite because they had a poor outing against the Giants?
Ok, I think I see your mindset here.
The defense was not elite in the Giants game.
Crabtree was inept in the Giants game.
KW was a bad decision as a punt returner in the Giants game.
But AS’ 1-13 3rd down effeciency and missed deep passes to a wide open KW and DW obviously had absolutely nothing to do with the outcome right DS?
The shrine you built of AS is beginning to take on a creepy look (lol).
You would do yourself (and Alex Smith) a huge favor by leaving him alone bud!
You mean the shrine JH built, right? JH brought him back. JH called him Pro-Bowl. If I’m building a shrine, the HC of the year is the contractor. So, you’re insulting JH as well.
You didn’t explain how our elite D gave up 10/14 points. All you did was lie and say they had a poor game. They didn’t. They had a great game. Till the TO’s put them in a bad spot. Then they looked average at best. After the first TO, they looked great. Then the second TO happened. And again they didn’t look elite. You have no Analytical skills if you don’t see the pattern.
You foolish one. Thinking the D is elite in isolation of the offense/ST. No. The title game proved it. Stop insulting AS/JH/Defense to defend your position. Which is so twisted I don’t know what it is besides you defend nobody but MC and take every opportunity to insult the guy who if he wasn’t the QB, we’re lucky to win 7 games with our same elite D/ST.
Had CK/Carr started,do you think we get near 14 wins? That is a yes/no question. If you do, then you are wrong. Aikman says so. JH says so. FG says so. Kurt Warner says so. Rich Gannon says so. Drew Brees says so.
If you are right, we drop AS. Don’t even try resigning him. Save the money. Give CK the job. Didn’t happen. Logic suggests you arebwrong.
…AR got Game, thats confirmed…….but had he been drafted by the niners his game would’ve never been better than Alex right now and possibly could be worse…….
…Alex is perfect for the 49ers…..his game is exactly what the team needs….
Oneniner,
If that is really true, then why are Harbaugh and Roman dressing up in Hoodies EVALUATING Peyton Manning throwing passes 1000′s of miles away during a time that they should be negotiating a worthy contract for Alex Smith? Why is our dream QB on a one year deal. Why will Kap be starting for sure next year and quite possibly this season if Alex can’t find Moss, Manningham and Crabtree?
Evaluating as Roman said. Hoodies or not, Manning wanted money, term, and control. 3 things the Niners were not willing to give up when they already have a capable winning QB in Alex Smith !
One lame
That is why they went after Peyton Manning and CK was second round draft pick and will be starting by next year at the latest, I trust your football knowlege as I trust Bernie Madoof with my investments.
Promises promises from someone who has no clue!
Slime loser,
Your always their to defend onelame and BS, are you the big brother. Are you like popeye and trying to save oliveoil ( BS) It is not our fault that your a unhappy camper.
Sorry Onesie … But I beg to differ. “Rah-juhs” is deadly accurate, executes very well and has a the quickest release this side the miss’sippeh!! And has the ability to make a dollar out of 15 cents. I can guarantee you Brett Favre or anybody on that Packers coaching staff didn’t teach him that. Those are God given talents. And unfortuantely, Alex doesn’t possess those talents, but that doesn’t make my boy Alex a loser, no sirree!! But I digress. In my opinion, and I don’t care how many OC you go through, natural talents do not diminish.
I found this eval of Smith to be very telling. Urban Myers said about Alex … and I quote, “He is a guy that, until he understands it, he is nonfunctional. He is a guy that — I keep hearing how Brett Favre kind of makes something out of nothing and is a person that runs around to make a play. Alex Smith is not that kind of player. Alex Smith is a person that, once he is taught, he has to learn it all.”
Now the argument can be made that Alex, being the perfectionist that he is, was unable to grasp a particular system because of Frisco’s revolving door of OC’s which pretty much made him … oh how did Myers put it … nonfuctional? OK. Fine. I hate that excuse, but I’ll give the benefit of the doubt. However, like I mentioned before, just ’cause you go through OC’s like you change your drawls WILL NOT make you less accurate; slower release; poor executioner; or will wane your abilities to make something out of nothing.
So I guess what I’m saying is, because Rodgers’ natural talents, you put him as 2005′s number 1 draft pick, he woulda been a stallion amongst mules. Keep in mind he wanted to be a 9er!! He grew up a 9er fan!! You have to throw that into the equation. I see Rodgers as a “Street Smarts” football player and Alex as a “Book Smarts” football player. Myers said it himself, Alex needs to be taught to be servicable. You can’t teach natural talents. But I will say this … Alex is all coached up!! He’s comfortable and is an expert in Harbs’ system. And mark words he will have a better season this year, than last!!!
Holy shiza?! Since when did Guaps become a novelist?!? Never again folks! I promise!!
Excellent perspective Guap!
Missed your ‘takes’ around here bud, welcome back.
Guap, good read. We learn from history, but now it’s time to move on. AR may outplay AS in this game but the score may not reflect that fact. This game will be won with the 9er DBs and pass rush doing their jobs. If they do well, 9ers win.
Six days away. Good times. Go 9ers!
Oh Hoff, mos def!!!!! I was just point-counter-pointing with Onesie in regards to Rodgers being worse than Smith had he been drafted a 9er. His natural instincts and talents as a QB, IMO, proves other wise. But anyway, it’s a no brainer that Aaron is better than Alex, but Aaron can’t do it all. I feel we’re the better all around team, as oppossed to the packs explosive passing game ’cause let’s face it … their D blows and they ain’t running on us!!! I feel if we can disrupt Aaron’s rhytm, much like NY did in the divisional game, we will beat them. I have a strange feel that there’s gonna be no in between. This Sunday, we’re either gonna fall flat on our face or ball lights out!! I’m hoping its the latter. This is definitely the match up I wanted to see!! When a immovable object meets an unstoppable force.
Oh … and thanks AES*!! Good ol’ elGuapo is not just another pretty face, lol!!
I am starting to hope Celek is not the one cut, just watching some film on him, It is very early, but he could be a poorman’s Brent Jones with seasoning but I could be way off. We will see what happens.!
Too many offensive weapons this year. The old feast or famine thing.
Cowboy and Condor should overwhelm the Packers inexperienced LT. I look for Mr. Rogers to be beat on in his own neighborhood. Offensively we will run the ball down their throat. With the Red Zone Offense fully installed and the addition of Moss, Akers should see more PAT’s.
Hey my two cents i read the days flap session and lol.Niners will run on pack and slow AR down we win buy 4+ and G.B. defence will get frusrated and give us penalty yards!
We are built to push around teams like the Pack. Their defense will not be able to stop the run and our physical offensive line.
Our dline will get up in Rodgers face and harass him all day long.
And never forget our cerebral assassin QB, the guy who just wins games!
It will be a fairly high scoring game, I believe. The Niners have a very difficult time stopping up-tempo passing attacks. The offense will have to put up some points.
31-20 Green Bay wins
Originally projected us winning this game but I believe I had failed to notice the pattern of our slow starting defense. Last three seasons now our defense has started slow and needed a few games to truly get up to full speed. We could easily start the season 0-2.
This isn’t being negative or dogging the team, just a real possibility in my opinion.
We would have been 0-2 last year to start if it wasn’t for Ginn bailing out our butts against Seattle in week 1.
Coffee,
I’m not saying it’s not possible, but the 49ers were leading when Ginn scored his first of two return TD’s. Not really a given that the 49ers were going to lose that game without those two TD’s.
No you’re right and I should have been more clear but it wasn’t a dominating performance by our defense against what wasn’t a great offense, certainly not like the one we face in week 1 this year.
Our defense was brand new last season, they will ride what they accomplished last season. Before last season we had NOOO pass rush. Not anymore. 49ers win and close the door in the second half. Defense will be fine, Offense will start slow then turn it on in the second half. ST helps with a Safety, 49ers win 26-17
Det get punked and we win that game by 17. Book it!
I scrolled up a bit and didn’t see any mention of this but if it’s been discussed already then I apologize. But I saw this troubling tweet earlier:
Matt Barrows @mattbarrows
Depth. Haralson might be out for a long time, might go on IR. RT
If PH goes on IR I would guess even with the Haggans pick up we’ll sign another OLB.
This really harshes my mellow.
The 49ers drafted 2 OLBs. Both injured. Aldon injured. Will play Sunday but at what speed? Brooks injured. Even Dobbs that pass rushes from the OLB spot as a DE has a calf injury. Essentially, all blind side pass rushers injured before the first game. And now Parys Haralson on IR?
It’s like last season, where the 49ers didn’t have alot of injuries, but they were all pass catchers.
Essentially, a rash of injuries at one position/funtion.
Coffee,
Wow. Houston, we have a real problem. Those 2 outside guys have been nicked already in the preseason. If one of them gets hurt, we are in trouble. Big trouble. No effective pass rush with 4 against the schedule we have is not good for us at all.
The Haggans signing looks like an act of desperation and it probably is. Aldon was pegged to start, but was not pegged to play 100% of the snaps. Parys was still an essential component of the right OLB spot.
He may still be suspended for 1 to 3 weeks so I am not sure it will help us much which is kinda confusing since Harrelson might be injured for that time.
Haralson may be out for the year.
Correction, Haralson is out for the year, unless he’s the one IR player that can be activated during the season [new rule this year].
If PH gets put on IR then they won’t need to drop someone from the 53, but I would think they will need more help than just Haggans, especially if he’s suspended to begin the season.
It’s not if, but when. PH is going on the DL.

@DS
First things first, Happy Labor Day!
Harbaugh has not built a shrine of AS.
Why?
1. Because he doesn’t get defensive the way you do with any form of critique directed at AS.
2. Because he (JH) has never compared AS to the great QB’ past and present.
3. Because JH has often praised the accomplishments of our elite defense and specials teams for the teams success rather then give AS full credit.
4. JH’ evaluation of Payton Manning pretty much negates your opinion that JH has made a shrine of AS (lol)!
No DS, Harbaugh wanted AS because he gives us the best chance at winning at the moment, not because he is enamored with him the way you are.
DS, please don’t compare your personal creepy feelings of AS with those of Harbaugh. It comes over as more incompetent and comedic as your comparision of AS to AR. And we both know that didn’t get you anywhere yesterday don’t we? (lol)!
I’m saying the same thing JH is saying. What have I said about AS that JH himself hasn’t said?
“Just the facts mam”
Fair enough DS. But for the sake of providing facts. Could you repeat what Harbaugh said about Crabtree’ hands? (lol)
Best hands he has ever seen. But AES it does not matter if you have Jerry Rices hands if you can’t beat your guy and get separation.
Again AES
I was the first person to report that on the blog. Point
Please find all the posts where I say JH is lying about this. Im make my conclusion and JH’s seperate.
How many times have Iold you to acknowledge what JH says about the other WR’s. Ive been the Rock of Gibraltor regarding JH statements about his players. You have to accept them all, or none at all. I have chosen all of them. You’ve selected only a few and dismiss others.
Grant, any follow up info regarding PH’s status?
Coffee,
Torn triceps muscle.
Oh, well that sounds good…
Where did you see that ex?
Jack,
Didn’t see anywhere.
So that’s your speculation?
Jack,
Oh ye, of little faith.
Just wondering where you saw it ex. It is something with his left arm, tricep or elbow.
I get what and why you’re asking. If I saw it somewhere, I’d tell you.
exgolfer is sounding like JH in his replies. Well done!
To bad we don’t have anyone connected with the blog that might have inside access to this kind of information.
Grant must be off hat shopping. ;)
Rib,
At least I didn’t play the, “He’s working through something card.”
Jack,
If I saw it somewhere, I’d tell you.
Good read on Tolzien winning the job:
But Tolzien’s a gym rat, who actually tried to occupy the 49ers facility for a few weeks when they signed him. He was spending late nights there studying film, so he slept in a recliner, showered in the locker room and ate in the team cafeteria until coaches figured out what he was doing.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/09/03/49ers-kept-scott-tolzien-for-awareness-more-than-ability/
Mathew Barrows of the Sacramento Bee has a similiar article, You should read it also coffee. Both articles appear to explain why he beat Johnson. He appears to be another coach that breaks down film and seems very into it. I liked Johnson’s arm but these articles give us some insite into how he is still on the roster.
They reference Barrow’s article as their main source.
Makes sense to bracket the smart and athletic Kaepernick with two film study nerds like Smith and Tolzien. Good for his development. Tolzien can push Kaepernick not only on film study habits, but proper footwork in the pocket.
Coffee,
Interesting read, thanks.
Based on preseason games, it seemed that JJ had done more than ST. I had just assumed that ST had done more than JJ in practice. This article clears things up.
I wonder what Jordan is going to say, if he reads the article?
There was a story like that shortly after the season ended about ST studying till the wee hours of the night at the facility on SFGATE.
For those that think JH was stuck with AS or AS doesn’t have the mindset JH wants in his QB check out the following quote:
“Even before Alex Smith met Jim Harbaugh, he was thinking like his future head coach.”
http://blog.sfgate.com/49ers/2012/09/01/alex-smith-qa-just-play-quarterback-the-right-way/
If anybody is going to take AS’s job, they are going to have to do what AS does, but better. JH isn’t looking for a different mindset QB. AS has the mindset JH wants. And he is remaining the starter until CK/ST/x can do what he does but better.
Sorry.
That can happen any minute.
The broken record continues to skip. ” JH isn’t looking for a different mindset QB. AS has the mindset JH wants.” Apparently, Peyton Manning had the same mindset as well.
Don’t worry DS, your shrine is safe for the immediate future.
Unlike a handful of those who dislike AS, I don’t fall into that category.
I’m not sure where you got the notion that I don’t want the best AS, but that’s certainly no the case.
Look at some of my posts back about November and you’ll see that I spoke in favorable terms of AS.
My problem?
Your incessant clamoring of comparising AS to the great and elite QB’s past and present. Nothing more nothing less.
You have become AS’ unofficial spokesperson on this blog and quite frankly, you’ve done a terrible job of it!
Alex Smith would have fired you after a couple of hours on the job if you were actually hired as his spokesperson (lol).
I don’t know of any other person that does AS as much damage as you do with all your over-the-top reactions and comparisions.
If was Donald Trump I would takle great joy in saying; DS, you’re fired! (lol).
You my friend are Alex Smith’ worst nightmare. Sorry, but that is a FACT!
Big P, Alex Smith is Harbaugh’s guy, along with the rest of the fan base. The others who don’t believe that are in for another 3 years of eating crow! Enjoy doubter!
Prime time,
Actions speak louder than words. If he was his guy, why would he try to sign Manning? Why is Smith’s contract structured in a manner that allows the team to move on after one year? Smith is Harbaugh’s guy until Harbaugh finds somebody better, pure and simple. If Smith performs to a higher level, great. If he doesn’t, the team can easily opt out of his contract after this year. You can spin it any way you like (which you often do), but actions speak LOUDER than WORDS. Hater? No, I hope Smith plays lights out. Doubter? Sure, and that is based off of the contractual commitment the team made to him and their “evaluation” of a certain QB during FA. Harbaugh says Smith is a Pro-Bowl QB, yet he went after Manning. It’s the perfect example of “actions speak louder than words.”
big P,
You forgot that Alex is an expert in this offense now. Never mind the fact that Alex downplayed his expertise. Urban Meyer said we can expect big time results from Alex now that he has mastered this offense. Fireworks show on Sunday! Lol.
Spin it 14 wins later BiG P. All those questions you just rattled off were answered in the offseason and when Smith was declared the Niners starter and captain. He will end his career in SF with a superbowl. The organization, players, coaches and real fan base all are Smith believers, not doubters. All arrows up!
Stop it with regards to “AS shrine” considering your MC shrine is just as large.
And you are nearing md extremes in your statements to me.
Please continue making yourself more foolish.
Josh Johnson will win the starting job ;-)
Lol.
It’s official. According to the Sac Bee, The 49ers just placed Haralson on IR. Since he was placed on IR today (not Tuesday), Haralson is not eligible to play within the new injured reserve rule. Out for the season. Dang :(
His injury to his arm must of been serious enough that he would of been out the season anyway. Big lost.
poo
There’s a rumor (That I started) that after Manning..Harbaugh went back to Alex’ locker and played to him “Better Man” by Pearl Jam. “Cant find a betta man, cant find a betta man”..lol..
And he cant!
..cause he’s tried. lol. ok,enough…
GENIUS Super Stan! Absolute genius.
Yep,them two have a co-dependent relationship..no doubt about it.
Aldon was pegged to start this year, but was not pegged to play 100% of the snaps. Parys was still an essential component of the right OLB spot. This is going to smart.
Looks like Aldon Smith will start and be there on passing downs, while Haggans and Dobbs split time backing him up.
Haralson was average rushing the passer, but excelled at setting the edge and dropping into zone coverage. His value was as a complete OLB.
Dobbs can set the edge and pass rush, but zone coverage? He’s way too big. Last year when Aldon was in in pass situations, the 49ers shifted to something like a virtual 4-3 With the big Dobbs in, the 49ers shirt to something like a true 4-3 no matter what the down/distance. The rest of the D-line are stout 3-4 two gap players. Will take alot of creativity from Fang to make this work.
What this means for Dobbs (and others) if the 49ers don’t find another OLB?
- Dobbs will play less (if any) Tight End this season
- Dobbs will play less interior D-Line as backup to Justin Smith
- Ricky Jean, Tukuafu and Williams will see more action
- Aldon will have a huge stamina challenge this season. Bizarrely, he may even be rested on some passing downs… or Haggans could even start on first down (yikes).
Terrible news. Get well soon Parys.

Happy Labor Day bud!
I give you credit for going on record as implying that AS will Start for the next three years.
It will be interesting to see if AS can fight off either CK or Tolz during this time. But if AS has a banner year (I believe he can), CK or Tolz will opt out because I don’t see them waiting 4 more seasons.
Alex is only 28 yrs old and in his 2nd season in JH system. We all seen the dramatic turnaround from getting professional coaching, it’s nothing but arrows up for him under Roman, Geep and Harbaugh.
I mean look at what an offseason did for Kap, he improved a lot.
Smith will be a 49er his entire career as long as he keeps doing what Harbaugh ask of him and that’s win games, which they will collectively, offense, defense, special teams!
Agreed, it’s about winning. But if AS does not make improvements in certain areas of his game, your 3 yr. prediction will fall short. If he does not get the ball to either RM or MM when they are open either in the intermediate or long routes, Harbaugh and the above mentioned will not be happy.
I can’t see the team signing PM and MM purely for window dressing. AS will need to deliver when they are open. We can no longer complain about not having WR speed. Getting the ball to these guys is the next step in AS’ ascension.
As long as those guys get separation and can win one on one battles, I’m pretty sure Alex can and will get them the ball. See Vernon Davis as a reference of how to get open, go deep and get the ball perfectly thrown to you over the shoulder.
I know Randy in the past could get open, but he is 35 and we have not seen much this season so he is still an unknown new weopen. Crabtree as we have agreed on, he needs to have a breakout season like Alex did last year, proving to the football world he is an elite player.
AES,
Every player does not have the speed to beat the defender by 5 yards. Randy Moss has made a career of beating guys by out jumping them for the ball. crabs has an amazing catch radius. Manning ham and AJ has shown the ability to get deep. Let’s see if Smith can hit someone besides Vernon. Crabtree clearly was not happy last year. He felt like he was open a whole lot more than these posters on here do.
I can’t imagine these receivers not being open in thi s game. However, I’ll be looking at coaches 22 film to find out. The eye in the sky doesn’t lie.
If Vernon can get open and go deep, as a TE having to go thru jams at the line of scrimmage and thru LB’s into coverage, why can’t Crabtree, Moss, MM and whoever else.
Alex has the 11-85 connection, now he needs the 11-15, and 11-whoever else connection. The spotlight is on those guys to get open and make plays. That’s why they were brought in, to get production from the WR position.
I have no doubt Alex will do his part to get them the ball, question now is can all the new weopons do theirs? Should be interesting! All arrows up!
Well it seems the real question from everyone in football is the qustin you seem to have the answer to. Can Alex Smith get it done? I’m sure you realize that is the number 1 question facing this team nationally. It’s good to know that you’ve taken care of that already. We’re definitely gonna need more than 185 yards a game and 1 touchdown to beat Green Bay. However, you assured me that Alex has that taken care of so I feel so much better now. Go Niners!
The entire football world is not looking at Alex, he is a winner, won 14 games last year. The football world wants to know and see if Moss can be more than a decoy. They want to know if Crabtree is really a go to receiver in the pressure moments. Can he make big plays. The football world also wants to know if Manningham can be more than a possession receiver. These questions are all related to why the 49ers went out and revamped their least productive position on the team.
We know Alex is a gamer, we know we can run the ball, we know we have a top 5 defense. Now do we have the playmakers in the passing game? That’s the million dollar question?
Playmakers can’t make plays without the football. The QB has to throw it to the playmaker. The QB has to know that every placket isn’t gomna have a 7 yard cushion like Vernon Davis when he beats his guy. The question for Alex is , is 3 yards enough cushion? Throw it and let’s find out if a play can be made. If you don’t mind Alex, make it a decent throw and keep it down!
Jordan,
When have you ever heard of a WR feeling like he wasn’t open? They all think they’re open, every play, all the time.
Exgolfer,
That’s the benefit of coaches 22 film from NFL.com. We will be able to see it for ourselves this season. The eye in the sky don’t lie!
I have read some of the predictions on the upcoming game against the Packers. I have this game tagged as a loss by the final score of 31-24. Alex Smith will throw two touchdowns and Frank Gore will run in another, but Aaron Rodgers and the Packer WR corps will chew up the Niners secondary. This will serve as a wake-up call to our secondary in that they need to play better.
I am not feeling good about putting added pressure to AR, and that is why the secondary will be vulerable, but that is why we play the game.
What’s also important is if the secondary(especially the safeties) blow their coverage assignment.
Maybe this guy has a different take on how the #3 quarterback was picked.
“49ers kept Scott Tolzien for awareness more than ability”
Posted by Darin Gantt on September 3, 2012, 12:50 PM EDT
You can find it with Google.
“The 49ers trust him as an extra set of eyes, and he’s good enough to simulate Aaron Rodgers, Matt Stafford and so on in practice.”
Tolzien’s extra set of eyes helps Smith prepare each week for the next opponent.
Shouldve just given him a coaches position! Lol.
Did JJ sign on with a team yet?

@htwaits
Not disrespecting you. But wouldn’t Tolz simulating opposing QB’s be more a help to the defense then AS?
If our defense can somehow simulate the Packs D in practice that seems to better a better barameter for AS.
Hofer,
No, not yet.
Hof I heard the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League were interested in Johnson. Brrrrrrrr, it’s cold up there man!
Prime, it’s still warm up here in Canada, for now. That’s hilarious if he ends up playing bush league football.
Sean he would be great in that league. He could rush for 150+ a game with that huge field. It’s not that bad of football as I watch occasionally. Athletic QB’s can really succeed in that league. If I’m JJ and I get no offers, he should take that opportunity to play up there like Garcia did, hone his skills and then if good enough, come back to the NFL.
The NFL and CFL should work together as a development league but I know the Canadians have their identity and want to keep it their own which I fully repsect. It’s better than arena by far.
PT, Hofe and J23,
JJ looked good to me in preseason. On the face of it, I thougth he should’ve won the #3 QB spot, but if JH feels like ST’s being like a quasi-coach is more valuable than what JJ has to offer, so be it.
Exgolfer,
Coach knows what he’s doing. JOsh won the QB job but ST has other ways that help the team and I have to trust that coach knows what he’s doing. Josh will be fine. He’s got broad shoulders. He’ll land on his feet.

True that, but you’re the one who seems to walk into the crossfire (lol).
That is not a battle I place many troops in. I consider MC a d*ck for this rookie season holdout, then not doing much since to justify it. But he’s our guy, the #1 WO last year, actually played some preseason this year and, I’ve from what read, has great hands.
Speaking of hypotheticals, I predict the 49er WO squad more of a wide open rotation this year – the game starters might not see the majority of snaps.
ribico
JH more or less said that about WR rotation.
DS, we’ll see how that plays out. At least we have a roster this year that makes that possible.
ribico
I have been of the faith that JH isn’t lying. And he said we have a good 4-5 starting caliber WR’s. If we do, we’ll see quite a rotation like we do in RB’s. Which I wondered about shortly after hearing JH statement.
Rib,
Nice, and to the point. Kudos…
Obviously, I feel a little different about MC, but to each his own, right? (lol).
I agree with Harbaugh rotating the WR corps. But I also believe that the bulk of it will involve RM, MM, KW and TGjr in different packages.
I don’t see MC of VD coming out that much.
We’ll have a better perspective after a couple of games though.
They aren’t going to deviate too much from the top 3 of Crabtree, Moss and Manningham imo. Crabs will get the majority of snaps with Moss and Manningham splitting time on the other side, along with 3 WR situations. Ginn is listed as the 4th WR, and I’d be suprised if he sees more than 3-5 plays on offense a game unless somebody goes out due to injury.

“Stop it with regards to “AS shrine” considering your MC shrine is just as large.
And you are nearing md extremes in your statements to me.
Please continue making yourself more foolish.”
@DS
Nah DS. But I do have a TEAM picture. I’m going to have Harbaugh sign it.
Hmmmm, let’s see. What message would I like for him to write on it?
Oh, I got one DS; here it is: “ALL IN” (with ALL 49ers players!).
Yeah, what do you think? (lol).
Remember DS, it’s about the TEAM!
Mr. All In
Tell you a secret,,….
There is a new blog topic discussing other players. If you are all about the team and all in ( I know you aren’t. But if you want to pretend for a little while longer, Im ok with it) then why not try going over there and stop being stuck here?
In JH I trust. You don’t.

Mr. All In (for Alex Smith Only)
Tell you a secret,,…. Ahhh, who are we kidding,?everybody knows I (DS) only cheer for AS!
There is a new blog topic discussing other players. I wish I could be all about the team and be all in (I know, but I can’t). But I will not pretend to show my feelings about AS, Im ok with it. I can’t help being stuck here?
In JH I trust (as long as he calls AS elite).
See DS, your words could easily cut both ways (lol)!
AES
Stop with your stupidity. I was a fan before AS. You make youself ever more the fool by your acts last year. To your All in statement. To you now claiming I was never a fan before AS.
Keep up the good work..You look cool doing it. By the way. I said “In JH I trust” long before JH said AS was a Pro-Bowl QB. I was thrilled with his hire before he brought AS back. Please reason that out in your personal isolated hypotheticol world. The fact you can’t acknowledge that, or that you think you know more about a QB than he does is flip-flopping in its purest form.
I kind of wonder how many of the true smith haters on this blog are’nt in a very small way rooting against smith just a teeny bit this week just so they can scream their criticisms at the members of the alex love club. i know they will deny it vigorously but a think maybe just a little bit….
Old Coach,
Bottom line is, no matter what anyone thinks. Whether we love Smith or dislike his game, we are still Niner fans. I can’t control how Smith plays. I’ve always said it. If he plays well, I’ll give him his props. If he doesn’t, I’m letting him have it. All we can do is enjoy it. I’m kinda surprised to get a comment like this from you. You are usually pretty neutral. This is something that DS would write.
Make no mistake about this, I’m rooting for my team to win. All 53! Go Niners!
@23 i didnt mention any ones name i dont do that. i think ds is just as unrealistic just on the other side of the issue. my apologies to ds cause i just did what i said i dont do. no disrespect intended
Coach,
You never have to call my name. I’m not bashful about my feelings for Smiths game. If its different now, we’ll see and I’ll give him props. I just mentioned it because the blog has been mostly flowing with positive energy. No mention of the haters or the Smithers in days as a matter of fact. Go Niners!
