SAN FRANCISCO — Alex Smith’s post game press conference, courtesy of the 49ers.
On his experience throwing out the first pitch last night for the SF Giants:
“Yeah I was keeping the ball down, isn’t that what good pitchers do? I was working the count, I had an open base… Yeah, it was great. Last night was awesome, obviously. All jokes aside, it was great. Today though, this was the best. To get a win like this, a team win like this, across the board, and playing well.”
This was a historical game, as far as statistics are concerned.
“Yeah, it’s crazy, I didn’t know that until the end there when they said it. Very cool, a lot of offenses and great offenses. When you think of the 49ers you think of great offenses, so this is quite an honor. It’s great to be with those guys.”
Your last 300-yard game was back in 2010, can you put that in perspective in how far you’ve come since that game?
“Yeah, it seems like a long time ago. It was a long time ago, I feel like. It’s a completely different world. I give credit to the guys around me. I think those guys are playing great and make my job easy.”
Was it a priority to get some deep balls and move the ball down the field?
“It’s been a priority for us, for whatever reason, I think it just came up today. Even last week it was a priority for us and we took some shots, but just the nature of how they were playing us last week. There were some shots last week that didn’t happen because of how they were playing. Today they came up, we took them and were a little more aggressive.”
Do you think they were expecting you to throw deep?
“No, but we were playing much more balanced. Obviously the way we ran the ball last week, they had to respect it. We got the opportunities and guys made plays outside.”
The way you guys mixed in multiple sets and bringing in QB Colin Kaepernick, do you think that’s opened up the offense?
“Yeah, I think it’s a great thing. I mean it’s another thing that defense is going to have to prepare for. I mean, absolutely, hey get ready for this. You only have so many reps during the week to get ready, the more they have to think about the better.”
How big of a win is this?
“This is a great team victory. The defense holding them to 3 points is great. We only gave up 3 points in two weeks, that’s incredible. Offensively, it could have been even better. The crazy thing, is in the first half, we had a lot of penalty yards. Had some big plays called back, that’s the scary thing, it could have been even worse.”
Your touchdown throw to WR Kyle Williams, was that back shoulder the whole way?
“Once I saw it, it wasn’t designed that way, I kind of reacted to it. Kyle was turned, the guy really had him running. I took a shot and he made a really great play.”
What does this mean for next week?
“I mean, we played them twice last year. There’s a lot of baggage, a lot of history. A little unfinished business, I guess.”
Offensive Coordinator Greg Roman plays a big role in play calling. When you’re in the huddle and you hear, do you know when it has the potential to be a big play?
“I felt great all the time, but especially today. Player caller intent, when the play call comes in I know exactly what he’s thinking, what we’re trying to do, and what we’re trying to accomplish. I think the whole offense is constantly putting us in good situations, him especially. Really thinking through things all week and putting us in good situations. I don’t think there’s any play that comes, that we don’t feel has the potential to be a great play.”
At what point did you hurt your finger?
“There at the very end, in that last pass attempt to [TE] Vernon Davis.”
On LB Patrick Willis’ forced fumble:
“Yeah, big change there. I was just talking about that after the game, with some of the guys. I think it was a huge point in the game. To get the turnover, to get the 7 points to go in 17-3 versus 10-6 is a big difference.”
What’s the most rewarding work for you?
“The win. That’s what we came here to do. It doesn’t matter 38-3 or 6-3, bottom line is that next week our record will say 4-1. Come late in the year, all that’s going to matter, is getting these wins.”
How much do you look at the standings, or is it even too early to even do that?
“Yeah, I think the division gets more of the focus. We’re always keeping an eye on the division, constantly looking at what they’re doing. Record wise, especially.”
Do you consider this game to be the best individual performance of your professional career?
“I have no idea, honestly. I mean, it was a great team victory, especially the best offensive performance that I’ve ever been a part of, as far as 11 guys.”

“it’s another thing that defense is going to have to prepare for….hey get ready for this. You only have so many reps during the week to get ready, the more they have to think about the better.”
Grant I think this would be the answer as to why all the trickery. Number 1 is does it gain yardage, number 2 is make opponents over think and overreact and continually guessing.
Solid performance by the offense (and the whole team) today. They did what they needed to do, and looked good doing it. On to the Giants.
Is anyone else having issues with this site switching between the mobile/standard theme tonight? I’m on my laptop and it’s trying to display the mobile version at random times. Oh and speaking of the mobile theme, it’s garbage IMO. Grant, maybe you should have one of the IT guys work on it? It’s always been really slow/choppy/freezy/sketchy no matter what phone I’m on. I’ve gotten in the habit of turning it off
Yeah, I was wondering about that. It’s still buggy.
May the Lord Jesus Christ hear our prayers and heal your wife of this cancer and our thoughts and prayers are with you my friend
Yeah it’s been flopping back and forth lately – even on the desktop computer.
I have to turn it off on mobile because it won’t read right but then trying to reply in regular mode on a phone is a nightmare.
I know I’m not popular here and I know this isn’t appropriate in this forum but I beg you all for prayers for my wife. It appears she has stomach cancer. She’s never hurt anyone – please, if you have an extra prayer send it her way. Please. I’m begging. She is my life. Without her I am nothing.
Very sad to hear, that is absolutely terrible news. I know how difficult of a time this is, I’ve been through it with loved ones before as I’m sure many others have. Tell her to keep her head up and never stop fighting. Your wife will be in my thoughts and prayers, same for you and your family.
Clemons. I’m sorry your family is going through a painful time.
Ms,
You are my boy and a faithful. Life trumps everything else. I have already said a prayer and I will continue to do so. You never have to beg friends for anything, let alone for the health of your loved ones. My heart goes out to you and your family and I will continue to pray for her health and recover during this difficult time. I will also pray for your health and well being, these things can take their toll-just know that you have a support system here. If you ever need someone to talk to, direct message me on Twitter and we can exchange phone #’s, I’m here for you. Let me know if there is anything I can do, god bless you and your family brother. One love.
May Gods grace shine on you and your family. I know it’s tough, Gods will is always for the better. No matter how much we don’t think so. I will send prayers to your family and ask God to do what’s in his will and to help you guys through this tough time. My heart goes out to you lemons. I have one thing to ask of you. Please make sure your wife and your family know Christ. He is the only salvation. Prayers sent brotha. God bless!
Clem, I’m saddened to hear that news. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.
msc
Have you contacted one of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America? What stage is it? Hopefully it isn’t Stage 4. In all seriousness, contact yoyr local University bio department, and email Charlie Rose (PBS guy) asking for sources of information. That guy knows everybody having done over 5,100 shows.
Like nearly any disease, if detected in Stage 1 (early), your wife will come out strong. I can assure you of that. The last decade or so has seen an incredible rate in understanding this master of all diseases (cancer).
No matter the stage of cancer, have your wife go crazy with consuming lots of orange juice (vitamin C) and blueberries (single best fruit on earth with everything they pack in them such as anti-oxidants). Try to focus primarily on the “real” sources of vitamins if possible. Vitamin pills are good. Natural sources are better. Try to eat the blueberries uncooked (raw).
The greatest molecular biologist who has ever lived extended his life a good 10-20 years or so by consuming large doses of Orange Juice after he got cancer.
I’ll need more information to help you further.
“The needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many.” Especially when it comes to your wife.
My wife passed away on the 15th from cancer. My prayers are with you brother.
BS you are a dumb ass and a quack with your stupid advise. I know a woman who had stage 1 breast cancer, she had a lumpectomy, no cancer, 2 years later she died, cancer came back and back, your football knowledge and your medical knowlwedge is freaking stupid.
Neal
You can’t keep the hate off of even this thread. Do some research before you spout out your hate on a thread regarding a fellow bloggers wife. Haters hate.
Trust me msc. I know what I’m talking about. I sincerely hope you the best and that she caught it early.
>>BS you are a dumb ass and a quack with your stupid advise.
And others with their advice to get right with Christ are better??
Come on… this thread is about msc’s wife. Show a little respect and take your feuds somewhere else.
Nobody wants your damn advice BS, just give your prayers and thoughts, and shove those Blueberries where the sun don’t don’t shine. Freaking know it all, who knows nothing.
MSC
My thoughts and prayers are with you.
@ Msc:
I am sorry you and your family have to go through this pain. You and your wife are in my prayers.
MSC..
I’m praying for your wife and your family as I write this. God bless
Msclemons, so very sorry to hear this. From NYC healing thoughts and energy are going to your spouse and comfort and strength to the both of you and your family.
It is times like this that makes all the petty squabbles like those found here seem so utterly ridiculous.
Thoughts and prayers, clem.
Msc,
My prayers go out to you my friend. May God keep you and your family safe at such a terrible time. I know your pain. My family has a history of Canver. Cherish every second with her and all your lives ones from this day forth. God never puts on you more than you can handle. Once again, you and family are certainly in my prayers. God bless!
Msc, from 1 faithful to another my prayers are with you.
Asking for prayers in times of need is always appropriate my friend. Prayer is powerful. Your wife and your entire family will be in my family’s prayers.
My prayers are with you. Put your faith and trust is Jesus Christ and he will get you trhough this. May the Lord be with both of you and your family.
M 67
My thoughts are with you and your wife. My wife is in her third year of fighting breast cancer. I feel for you bro its a tough road to haul.
????? C’mon man
has one niner written all over it. BTW did you see latino’s post get deleted. Me thinks it’s cause it’s oneniner as well.
How sad is someone that they get banned and still try to continue to hang around?
Reminds me of a guy who’s girl has broken up with him. His response is to camp out on her lawn…
Grant,
Please delete this clowns post.
Bay,
You said exactly what I was thinking. I hope he is proud of himself.
You get my vote as well.
oneniner and all his multiple personalities need to go. Nuff said!
19R can really sink to unprecedented lows sometimes, but then think about it: getting banned from this blog is like getting turned away from a biker bar for a dress code violation.
Nothing offensive at all in this post. Seems like some “big men” here who think they can say what they want, can’t read the post for what it is.
Sorrow for his wife. Why can’t you guys be ok with that? Or do you have to start something with everything/everybody?
People are judged by the company they keep.
An age old saying that might serve as a good reminder for you.
23 and others are keeping you company houston.
Message in there for you? oneniner wasn’t a jerk to me. You were. We all know how you rate loyalty/respect now don’t we?
And I vote that several of you stop bringing up oneniner with every new poster. He’s discussed now more than he was whe he was here. You guys are obsessed with him. What is it you anyway? Some persoanl issues you have?
Who would have thought that the way onenienr gets under all your skins so easily is to get banned! I bet he’s enjoying that. And the fact that AS is kicking butt when many of you “smarter” fans said “no chance.”
DS
19R’s name came up because he slinked back onto a blog he’s been banned from; can’t take a hint. So then this morning he comes up with something wholly inappropriate. His post would’ve been deleted even if he wasn’t banned. Nobody’s ‘stalking’ 19R, he’s stalking us. “Good One Niner” was prickly on his best days, and occaisionally funny, but “Bad One Niner” (off bi-polar meds?) could cross the line so far that…….well…..
brotha
A lot of people are still here and have said done a lot worse. The problem really are a lack of rules/guidelines here.
For instance, when oneniner was banned, his posts, clearly were deleted. But md’s posts in replies to thoe deleted posts remained. And oneniner didn’t say anything meaner than md. md’s post should have been deleted as well.
It woud be very simple to get control here. Write rules. Make us all follow them. If one here does not, they are banned. See how many people get banned in order to “keep it real”. I bet, the blog figures it out really quick. If you want to insult others, you better get it all out at once. Because you won’t get another chance.
The PD is not innocent in this. They allow things to blow up. And the thing that got oneniner banned, Big P did a similar thing and it wasn’t about football at all. The PD isn’t fair when it does ban people. Should ban them both or allow them both here.
DS we all know what side Grant is on. The proof was when Bay made the comment about my Mom and he pretended he didn’t see it.
The rules are simple, the haters have free rein. It is what it is.
@ Prime:
Didn’t oneniner get banned because he wouldn’t stop taking shots at Grant and his father?
I’m not sure why but when people throw out racist remarks and Mom insults and are still active, makes you wonder.
No claude
onenienr was banned becuse he posted material that proves pretty convincingly that it was md who was banned from another blog.
For years, md made a claim that onenienr had been banned. I know because I’ve read this blog for years. Then oneniner found out that md was banned. The posted material of md from another website of a blogger (md) here is why he got banned.
Before he was banned, oneniner wrote to me that he never understood why md was saying that about him being banned. So, he put the data up after hearing for literally years the BS that he had been banned from it. Kind of interesting that it was md who was.
That is what happened claude.
this free spell check thing sucks.
Prime,
8 times out of 10 it is you who begin with the personal insults. I don’t begin them with you but I will defend myself.
Even cut and paste and debate you to death Claude balls slings insults now. I see Jordan post his opinions, and Claude will call him a douche. Real classy.
In the end, this blog is for opinions. Don’t name call because someone has a different opinion than you. You might now like the response. And Prime, trust me, you are one of the most frequent insulters on this blog. So was oneniner and he’s gone.
BS,
Onenimer is GONE! If you miss him then you should leave as well. You’re killing the blog with your garbage.
@ bay:
Do you really think the reaction jordan gets is due to the mere expression of his opinion? You don’t think it has anything to do with the manner in which he expresses it? Or the lack of respect that he shows those who disagree with him? Or the hypocrisy of him calling out another commenter for allegedly not keeping his word?
And, yes, I called him a douche last night. Because he was acting like one.
@ DS:
I stand corrected on the circumstances surrounding oneniner’s banishment.
Claude,
What are you talking about? You called me whatever you did because its what you do. You don’t like my delivery, that’s on you. It’s not directed at you, but somehow you take it personally. Think about it. It’s not personal.
There you go again bs….. Onelame was banned TWICE by MM. Ask anyone who was in here then. They will tell you the same. You wasn’t reading back then or you would know. And if you look on the website he’s talking about and others there are more than 1 ninermd’. The dude he put up didn’t even have the same captions. I have NO problem saying I got booted if I did. Again onelame broke every rule. Talking about Moms, Dads, “retards” race Nd everything. I Called him out on being banned because I knew it was coming again. So bs shut your pie hole and quit lying about your past here. You just started coming around the last 2 years or so. Hopefully you are the next to get the ax. You are all upset you lost your lame partner and now with backing this idiots comments on lemons post and cracking lame momma jokes. You are picking up where he left off. Like he did in the past your allies are starting to see past your similar outlook on smith and are seeing what kind of loser you are. Pathetic! RIP Onelame!!! For the 3rd time. Wheeew
BS,
Just go away already. It is offensive and it’s sick. It’s made even more pathetic by the fact that it’s Oneniner, who can’t seem to take a hint.
Take a hint and stop stalking me Big (or rather tiny) P
Nobody is stalking anybody, it’s about decency during a time where somebody is asking for prayers for his ailing wife. The post has been deleted, thankfully. It was deleted because it was inappropriate and it was Oneniner, just like Latino Heat’s posts are deleted because they are Oneniner. Like I have said before, my name is Paul and I am 6’5″ tall. I have been called BigP for as long as I can remember, I didn’t give myself an elaborate nickname like some people here do. This is about the tenth time you have fantasized about my genitals and it is just creepy.
Stalking is looking up for information about somebody on the internet with the explicit reason being to be a jack-ass and wanting to find out more about them. Hence you. Stalking is spending time on the internet looking for videos of things that you think others are. All those stupid video links you and others do. That is stalking and just flat out creepy.
Stalking is your obsession with me. Notice how I don’t much care to reply to your posts a lot? That’s because I don’t care about them. You clearly care a great deal about mine. Your obsession with oneniner is always scary. Why you and others are obsessed with him….you got your wish, and you’re still yapping about him. Guess what? When you’re not here, in addition to me being happy, I don’t think about you. You don’t matter in this world. Go away.
“You think you know, but you don’t. And you never will.” Nobody but you has a problem with that quote. Jerk-ass.
BS,
Again, nobody is stalking you, don’t flatter yourself. You always yap about how much you hate me, I don’t care. I don’t hate you at all, I feel sorry for you. You do nothing with your life except sit in front of a computer. No significant other, no children and no life. It’s no surprise that you gravitate towards people like Oneniner, because you are just as lonely and angry as he is. “You think you know, but you don’t. And you never will.” Jim Mora was talking about you with regards to employment with that line. Have a wonderful day Sunshine!
Big P, misery loves company lol. All the “normal” people respectfully wished Clemens well as he and his family endure a tough time.
Two social misfits responded inappropriately. One wrote a long diatribe the other wrote an insult…..
Bay,
I just can’t believe that Oneniner is so angry that he would write something like that, it’s truly sick. It doesn’t surprise me at all that BS would defend him, though.
Then don’t reply to my posts. That shows you’re not stalking me at all. And if you feel sorry for me, it would be typical of you to grant the persons request. And if you didn’t hate me, you have a great deal of explaning to do. You’ve written plenty of posts to or about me that were full of hate. That means you hate me. Spent all you college days in the weight room I see. None in any critical thinking classes. If you write a lot of hateful stuff towards somebody (especailly over a long period of time) that means you hate them. Duh! See your best pals here about that and Alex Smith.
But I know you’re full of BS. Because if you were remotely serious about any of that, you would at least be able to get my name right. You aren’t. So, anything you have to say is BS.
Stalker.
Big P,
Can you believe BS ? Can’t believe this guy gets hammered for 3 days, incredibly leaves the blog for 2 days and comes back acting negatively as if they never left. This person has some real issues. I just don’t get this guy. Insensitive but sensitive??? Truly a conflicted person.
I don’t know if I am more excited to watch old man biden get schooled this week or the Gmen coming to lose either way good times.
White horse prophecy 2012!
For the last 15 years or so i go to one niner game a year. I’m sure as hell glad i chose the buff game this year. I’ve been attending 9er games since the very early 60′s and have seen the great and near greats through out 9er history but i do’nt think i’ve ever seen a more dominant offensive performace in my life. I hope we are able to keep both smith and kaep for the long run they make a phenominal tandem. oh and by the way the prime rib at the house of prime rib was almost as good as the 9ers performance…..go 9ers
@ old coach:
Congratulations on seeing a performance worthy of your fanhood. I envy you.
Arrrgggghhhh! Is it lunch time yet? Suddenly I’m very hungry.
Sounds like you had a great day old coach. You caught a historic game. Topping it off with the House of Prime Rib ain’t bad either!
Marquee game this Sunday any predictions?

Popular or not…makes no difference, my friend. You are facing a rough time, and need the support and from all of the Faithful….My thoughts and prayers are with you and your familly…….
MsClemons, that’s terrible news. Your posting is so poignant and so honest and open, it really reminds us what’s important. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your wife.
Sh-t. Just saw this. So sorry, Clem… hang in there. We’ll be thinking of you.
I’m so sorry. Best of luck to your wife and you.
I am humbled and grateful for your responses. I apologize for bring this to a 49ers forum. I was a bit freaked out.
No probs MSC. No need to to apologize either bud. God strengthen you and your wife through the journey.
Keep you spirits up and get support from wherever you can. Your wife will need your support throughout the treatment process. Positive Attitude is the biggest difference maker.
No problems, msc. This is bigger than all Niner games put together. Just try to ignore the proselytizing and sniping back and forth that have no place in this thread.
Dude, no reason to apologize. Being freaked out is pretty normal with something like this.
@ Clem
Well I’m a worthless sinner so my prayers may not carry much weight, but you got it brother. Everything else here pales in comparison. Perhaps we can be your support group, raggedy-ass bunch that we are.
At this time it may seem hard to imagine, but the most positive thoughts you and your wife can muster will carry you through better than otherwise. Drugs are better than ever, and so there’s always hope.
You’ve called yourself unpopular. I don’t think that’s right. To me you’ve stuck to and usually logically defended your opinions, often with wit. I’ve disagreed with you, but nobody thinks you’re a troll.
“When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on!”
Shanti,
Tony
sending good thoughts your way
Oh Brother you have prayers,Positive attitude even after expressing grief.Look into support from various medical disciplines for a total defensive strategy. No matter what happens love love love!!!
Winston W-so sorry man .You OK?
The best of wishes go to you and your wife in this time. I hope but nothing but the best for you two, and keep up the positivity, it can really make a difference.
Clem – I’m very sorry to hear about your wife. We’ll be pulling for her.
Hang in there.
msc,
My thoughts and prayers go out to you, your wife and family.
Clem,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you in these hard times. Keep fighting.
I’ll keep you both in my prayers.
Clemons, my thoughts are with you and your wife. Get her the best doctors you can find and don’t take “no” for an answer on anything.
Keep up the good fight, friend!
MSC
I just came across this now. My prayers go out to you and your family. I hope that you’re wife recovers fully. I’ll be pulling for you. Keep the faith.
msc,
I am deeply saddened to hear your news. Every postive thought I can come up with will be sent you and your wifes way. Things like this make football seem so unimportant in the grand scheme of life. Stay strong for your wife and never give up hope. It will be difficult but you can get through this. I’m also disappointed to read that you feel you are not popular here. It really brings home how idiotic these boards can get that somebody feels they are disliked on a personal level in discusssions about football. As you can see by the responses you’ve gotten, your belief is unfounded. You are a member of our 49er family and everyone wishes you and your beautiful wife the best.
Clemons – so sorry to hear about your wife. Will send positive thoughts and prayers for you and your family during this difficult time.
Please keep us posted on how’s she’s doing (and how you’re holding up) – some things far more important than football!
Amen to that, 49er Girl. We’ll all get those humble hearts.
But I fully intend to still give Clem a ration of poo every now and then! : > )
Prayers sent, along with hugs, purrs and headbutts. SO terribly sorry you’re going through this.
My niner friend Clemons I sent you all the positive thoughts in the universe and the best wishes for a fast recovery for your wife. Stay strong my friend, we are with You!
MS:
What is your wife’s first name…I would like to pray for her daily by name.
And I echo the sentiments of NinerMD and Leo…If you do not know Christ, try to get to.
Clemons,
I am praying now, I am very sorry. keep the faith, miracles happen.
MSC,
Scrapping on a blog is one thing, but a loved one with cancer is another. I hope you and your wife have many more years together.
MSC…
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your wife during this difficult time…
Crabtree seemed to have a chip on his shoulder during post game interview. He just wants to hurry up and play nyg. I’ve had this game circled for months. Let’s go niners.
Bay and 23welcher print this post from Grant and everytime you want to talk about A Smith this week sit down and stfu
my thoughts are with you. be strong never give up. try to get any help you can. you both will overcome this together. believe fellow faithful
“Alex Smith threw for 303 yards on Sunday and led the 49ers to a franchise-record 621 offensive yards in a performance that could be described as raising a big middle finger to all those who have doubted his ability to lead a winning team”
NICE!
Why do they call it a wildcat formation every-time Kapernick is at QB? It is not a Wildcat formation!!! So efen annoying. Wildcat is when QB is lined up as a receiver and the running-back takes direct shotgun snap
What I saw today was not Alex Smith throwing the ball so much better, but that he was virtually unrushed by the Bills defense, and the receivers got wide open against whatever the Bills were doing in the secondary. But not being rushed was the main thing to me.
Gentle,
Your analogy is extremely accurate.
Maybe not being rushed….. Or could it be that the Offensive line just did one hell of a job in protecting and establishing throwing lanes? I’m inclined to believe the latter, myself……
Little bit of both. Either way, not a measuring stick game. Remember, last six quarters Buffalo was outscored 90-10
To dismiss this victory or ignore Smith’s orchestration of it is to disrespect the record book.
He made a variety of throws, pretty much everything in the quarterback catalog, and put up fabulous numbers, while leading his team to a historic victory. There is no fairer means by which to measure the effectiveness of a quarterback.
Alex is a pro-bowler this year.
Two quotes from AS that say it all.
“Come late in the year, all that’s going to matter, is getting these wins.”
” it was a great team victory”
Now that was the game I’ve been waiting for from Alex. By far, that was Alex’s best game as a pro. I was actually upset for him when he drove the team downfield and they put in CK. I suppose the injured finger may have had something to do with it but I wanted Alex to put an exclamation mark on his dominating performance. He read everything perfectly and his passes were on time and accurate. That performance gives me hope that the SuperBowl may actually be within our grasp this year. A few thoughts:
The pass over the top to VD in the 3rd qtr was a thing of beauty. Last week against the Jets Smith had that same pass to Walker but he threw a line drive which DW caught out of bounds. This week Smith drops it in over the top and lets VD outrun the defender to the ball. Absolutely perfect.
The pass to Crabtree at the end of the 2nd qtr was another perfect pass. On time and out front which he dropped in over a defender. A thing of beauty.
The back shoulter pass to KW was also a great read and a perfect pass. Looked like the Bills blitzed and Smith knew he had 1 on 1 and he delivered the ball to the perfect spot. Looked like a wounded duck but it was accurate and on time. A thing of beauty.
Lastly, the 9ers may be starting a drive to get coaches fired. First they embarrass the Jets in their place and now the Bills at Candlestick. The Bills looked absolutely pathetic. I do think they quit after the first half. I was embarrassed for Chan Gailey. He is a good man and actually a good offensive coach. He deserved to be fired after that effort. I only hope the 9ers embarrass the Giants in a blowout win and Tom Coughlin resigns due to his inability to handle such a butt kicking.
Agreed
Very good breakdown Houston. I too loved the “dime” Alex dropped in VD’s bread basket in the 3rd qtr. That was 1 of Alex’s best throws ever.
Whoa!
I don’t think anybody here thinks K-Gun is ready for Prime Time so unless you can “copy” somebody’s Post than you’re the only one saying it.
But make no mistake about it K-Gun IS the Future of the 49ers. We just don’t know when that “future” begins. And he would be the first to tell you he’s got a ways to go to becoming a Starting NFL QB. He will get better, he’s got the luxury of time which is the best scenario for him. Just ask Aaron Rodgers
@f49er
Look at any of 23′s posts. He’s replaced the “JJ will be starter by week 6″ with “CK will be starter by week 6.”. Which by the way is just 2 games off now. I’m thinking that isn’t so likely to happen.
@itold
CK hasn’t yet been asked to read a defense beyond a simple run or toss it to RB situation. And AS does indeed have anothe 8-10 years at least. With the QB rules as they are, I think a lot more QB’s will be playing and starting in their 40′s in another decade or so. There is no way CK replaces AS due to performance this year. In 1980, BW put in JM several times. But he had him behave as a regular QB having to read defenses and such. And JM was pretty freaking good at it.
That throw to KW for the TD, was all experience. Knowing what to do and when to do it. CK wouldn’t have known to do that.
CK may be the future. His athleticism is impressive. Having said that I don’t think CK’s future is running the type of plays that he’s running for the 9ers now. The 49ers will not run read options as a main staple in their offense even with him as the QB. Running QB’s can be great for a short period of time. Even the great Randall Cunningham was most successful when he used his athleticism to keep plays alive so he could eventually pass the ball. I want to see CK run the base offense before I can even contemplate him being the starter. Right now we don’t even know if he can deliver a simple out pattern on time and accurately. We don’t know if he can hit VD on the Wheel route like Alex did Sunday. We literally have not seen him make the most basic throws required of every QB. Until we see those things then I think it’s a bit premature to anoint him as the future.
To everyone talking of quarterback “consistency”. We’ve played 5 games now, all team and individual stats take into account *all* of those games. In other words “consistent” effort so far.
I direct your attention to these two pages:
http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/player/_/stat/passing/sort/quarterbackRating/year/2012/seasontype/2
http://espn.go.com/nfl/qbr
Alexcusers who claim such stats are irrelevent (you know who you are) don’t need to click the links.
@Rib
I am one who doesnt hold too much stalk in stats. Only two stats matter to me. Turnovers and time of possesion are the only two stats that I pay creedence too. Its really good to see AS on top of the heap after all the crap he has gone thru and does show an improvement in him and the team.
One doesn’t need stats to know where AS is. Only a microphone, and a planes ticket to GB/NY/Buffalo/Detroit. Where you can ask the opposing players about Alex Smith.
I bet they don’t bring up many stats. Bet they do bring up how darn good the guy is though.
Additional evidence for those who believe that coaching matters:

MSC my thoughts and prayers are with you and your wife
Interesting facts of the day. Alex Smith 1st in NFL in passer rating, 4th in completion percent, and 6th in YPA (this disrupts the “checkdown” argument). Had completed 15 20+ yard completions, more than MVP leader Matty ice. I am one who claimed alex was inaccurate deep, and yesterday he proved me wrong. And the most important fact is 4-1!! Let’s go niners.
@Adam707
AS last week said, on those deep balls, there are days when you hit them and days where you don’t.
The Jets game, he didn’t. This week he did.
Who is “Matty ice”? Matt Ryan?
I’ve just never seen him hit the deep passes with ease. Yea a lot were open but they were all on point. And yes matty ice is Matt Ryan. ESPN loves to call him that. It’s a college nickname. Doesn’t have much merit in NFL however.
Thanks Adam707. Learn something new every day.
By the way, IMO it is easier to make the perfect pass if the WR is actually open. You’re not trying to make it perfect. You play a little looser, and you’ll tend to do better. Of course if the OL stank (they didn’t), it means nothing because Alex is getting sacked or throwing it away.
On Sunday, we saw what happens when the OL gives AS the kind of time other elite QB’s get. We saw the WR’s take advantage of that extra time as well. And we saw what our guys look like out there when they don’t drop passes.
Oh, and our defesne is better than anybody’s offense.
You guys are killing me. The Buffalo Bills can certainly do wonders for your stats.
Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain – and most fools do.
Benjamin Franklin
That is true Jordan, but yesterday he was hitting those passes that he missed on last week. He did a much better job of getting the ball up so that the receivers could get under them, and the back shoulder throw to Williams was nice.
Didn’t seem to do wonders for the QBs for the Jets, Chiefs, Browns or Pats. Oh, maybe it did help the QB for the Pats, he’s just a few places behind AS in the rankings. Lucky Brady, gets to play the girl wrestlers twice a year.
23welcher warm up your jaw your sucking crow with bay this week bwahahaha
You might want to reserve judgment for a few more games. His performance last week was terrible, this week was uber-awesome.
His place at the top of the rankings is culmination of all his games played so far. You don’t get to be #1 by having “terrible” performances.
Interesting.. all this time the Smithers camp said to ignore passer ratings, that they are skewed and don’t represent good QB play nor victories, but now that they are in your favor you use them. Well I agree his passer rating is tops right now. Again, let’s see how this plays out.
@ Fourth & Alex:
all this time the Smithers camp said to ignore passer ratings, that they are skewed and don’t represent good QB play
Who said that?
Yeah, “smithers” have said wins were more important than stats. I’ll always take a win over a high rating. But guess what, our team has both – who wants to argue with that combination?
“Interesting.. all this time the Smithers camp said to ignore passer ratings…”
And long before you showed up here, the anti-Smith crowd advised all of us readers that one should only use ESPNs TQBR rating to assess Smith’s actual worth as a QB because the passer rating meant nothing.
So… what’s the answer? TQBR was good enough for the Anti-Smith contingent last season but it isn’t anymore?
He’s been great weeks 1,2 & 5. He’s been bad weeks 2 and 3. All I’m saying is to reserve judgment. Back off.. really I’d like for him to be a pro-bowl type QB. One who makes plays, not a game manager. That’s just a personal preference. I happen to like my team leader/QB to be the one who strikes fear in the opposition. That doesn’t mean I’m saying it’s the only way to win. Before we talk about his great QBR/passer rating let’s wait and see how it all pans out.
And I resent the “long before you’ve been here” comment. I’ve been here since the early Maiocco days (I didn’t comment most of the time early on). And to be perfectly honest Adam I don’t recall seeing you commenting on here back when I was reading the boards, so touché. There were a few regulars who I don’t see anymore (like Andrew in Rishikesh) but I don’t recall an Adam way back when. I’m not saying you weren’t there, but don’t call me out as someone unaware of the comings and goings on this blog.
Hey BS! I hope you are proud of your buddy here!
Alex shut down bay and 23welchers agrument bwahahahaha like Romeny shut down Obama
@calmniner
Nothing at all. Like I’ve said a lot lately, some are here to fight. Considering the fact that Big P can’t even get my name right and he is asking for decency, I’ll ignore that request from him. The lowest amount of decency required to civil discusion is to refer to others by their name. BigP can’t. So I won’t.
BS,
We really had a great 2 days without you. I promise. If you want to take 2 weeks as I suggested, I don’t think anyone here would mind.
Thanks. Bye bye!
Your just jealous that all the attention is not on you now.
Did the Bills STACK THE BOX?
Prime
Notice how 23 whatever his name is now is crying after a history breaking offensive performance? Then is happy after a loss?
Ain’t no fan who does that.
Yeah I know, he wants to play his games, let’s let the children have their fun!
BS
What did you think about that vacation I was suggesting for you? I found the perfect destination for you. AT WORK! Get off of the damn computer rattling everyone’s nerves and get a damn job!
BS,
That’s what you were doing last week when we ran you off of the blog for 2 whole days! I know that drove you out of your mind. How did you do it? Hide your computer from yourself? Loan it to a friend? Waste some orange juice and blackberries on it? You, my dizzy friend, are a riot! Lol. Bwahahahahahahaha!
way to insult montanaman’s wife. Haters gotta hate 24×7.
Grant An IGNORE button was overdue on this site when 23 came. He isn’t adding anything.
So ignore it DS.
Jack,
I hope you know how to deal with alleged victims on the blog. Notice that I only responded to BS comment about me yesterday. BS does
Not get it. BS can’t keep it on football. It has to be drama related, not football related. This dude BS is unstable.
Jordan,
My comment to DS was not a reflection on you. He doesn’t seem to understand we already have an ignore button, it’s between our ears.
One of the best parts of this board is it’s open forum comments section. There are plenty of comments I see daily that I just skip through, or at times begin to reply and realize it is better to leave it alone.
I got you Jack.
@ DS:
While his comment may not have been particularly sensitive, it is obvious that jordan’s insult is targeted solely at you and your propensity for offering unsolicited advice. By unnecessarily invoking montanaman’s wife in your response to jordan, it looks like you are trying to exploit her illness for your own benefit.
Claude,
I never made a comment toward montanamans wife. I have never made a comment towards any posters relatives on this blog. BS is a liar and a sick twisted clown.
@ jordan:
I never made a comment toward montanamans wife.
I know. That’s why I said what I said in my comment.
claude
1. I said blueberries. Not blackberries. 23 can’t even get it right when he is insulting others.
2. montanaman mentioned juices/juicers. I only mentioned orange juice. The post certainly seems to include others besides myself.
3. Stop with this crap of you thinking I exploit another person for some benefit against a guy who can’t even get my name right. He isn’t worth it. I can offer advice. Nobody is forcing anybody to take it. The follow-up post by montanaman though would seem to indicate that I am not so off base with my idea. If you/others have so much hate for me that you can’t see that, don’t blame me for offering advice that is good. And seeing how it might help somebody live a more comfortable/longer life in some cases, why do you have a problem with it, given the posts that appear here?
I told Grant and msc that they can have the posts deleted no hard feelings.
@ DS:
Please stop rewriting my comments. I did not hate on or criticize you for offering advice. I suggested that your unnecessary invocation of montanaman’s wife to gain the moral high ground against jordan was unseemly.
claude
“…it is obvious that jordan’s insult is targeted solely at you and your propensity for offering unsolicited advice. ”
Yes. Because I am always on here offering advice to others. Besides this, what advice do I go around giving? Advice, isn’t football opinion.
I gave Grant advice to watch DS9 on netflix. But only because he seemed interested to know about it. I gave advice to several posters here on how to evade the “awaiting moderation” issue should it delay your post for long. But, those people asked for it.
Tell me claude, how often I give unsolicited advice out.
Quite a bit DS….
DS,
All you had to do was offer your best regards and well wishes as pretty much every other blogger on here did. That is not enough for you though. You have to go Cliff Claven and offer your opinions and unsolicited views of eating and drinking healthy.
In a nutshell: it’s not about you DS. He didn’t want to hear your views and ideas. He wanted some support. That’s it.
@ rocket:
You have to go Cliff Claven …
Ouch.
Absolutely nailed it.
Even the Smithers can’t stand BS, ego maniac know it all.
I told BS this 6 months ago. I told him that if he didn’t pipe down, I’d tell him what everyone on the blog wouldn’t. I mean look at the board, you have the non believers, the Smithers, the neutrals and BS, who is a Smither that gets scrutiny from everywhere. This guys doesn’t get it. It’s really just time to search fora new blog.
BS,
I just came up with an idea. Go spend 2 months over on Jack Hammers blog. The spike in his number would help him greatly, and you’d be giving us a well deserved break. Sure you can Take prime with you! Bwahahahahaha!
BS, is nothing but a lingering fart that won’t go away, when he she or she he is not here, the place is like a breath of fresh air. Fresh snow falling down on a summit, when she he is here the snow turns yellow.
Why cause your tired of getting slapped around by us? Your football IQ is as equivalent as Neal’s, add the two up and you get a grand total of ZERO.
Hey loser, STACK THAT BOX this weekend.
Prim Tin , is BS only friend on this site. That is laughable, one is delusional and the other is the biggest hater on the site.
prime,
So I take it YOU’RE not leaving with BS? Damn! I tried. Go Alex! Hes a pro bowler. He’s Elite!
And don’t forget all he does is win games bro!
STACK THAT BOX!
When is that supplemental NFL draft clown?
And you think people on here have an admiration for you?
How many times have people told you to leave? More than DS I guarantee it.
+1
Ego maniac know it all! This is your buddy Claude. And you have the nerve to call out the “company I keep?” C’mon Maaaaan!
@ninermd:
What egomaniac know it all is my buddy?
I mentioned the company you keep because you seem to live by the belief that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” That can lead to embarrassing situations, like the U.S. arming and funding Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. Or you buddying up to a cat molester.
Lmao….. You know who I’m talking about. Ill say this its rhymes with DS…. And how do you really know molested cats? That’s a pretty serious rumor.
Odd comment coming from the guy who promised never to return if Alex was still the QB…
It will ignore big p’s comments and act like the bigger person and then talk about his mom and say its ok for a poster to come out and say “I don’t like you much but ill send prayers” to a man on here begging for prayers for his sick wife. Yeah this is bs…. The hypocrite king on the blog. Don’t get fooled by the fool. No bueno!
@brown niner
If you go to the other local newspaper blogs, they are run on a professional level. The Sac Bee (Matt Barrows) has a report abuse button. If anybody makes any personal insults, hateful speech or such at anybody, that post is deleted. And if they continue to do so, they are banned. Look at their blog and you won’t find the insults there. That is because they have rules and they are followed.
The PD for whatever reason though is the wild west.
@ DS:
It seems odd that you continue to comment here on the PD’s wild west blog when you could easily move to one or more of the professionally-run rules-following blogs that you clearly prefer.
claude
Whose to say I don’t already? I already gave you the reasons as to why I do (post here). Don’t think I can explain it any further. If you want more reasons, they’ll be lies.
@ DS:
Well, if you commenting on those sites, it’s under a different screen name.
I must have missed/forgotten the comment where you explained why you post here. Care to re-explain?
It just seems odd that there exist many 49ers-related blogs that are run the way you prefer a blog to be run, but you only seem to post comments on a blog that isn’t run that way and shows no signs of moving to a DS-approved model.
History and hope that this one gets better claude.
@ DS:
But what about the commenters who like the wild west nature of this blog?
DS,
You get what you give around these parts, so saddle up young feller.
The open nature of the comments section is what makes this blog what it is.
Claude,
Well said.
claude
As I tried and failed to explain to you late last week, then you’d best get ready for and accept anything that happens as a result. And not think anything is off limits. You can get yourself into a lot of trouble bringng a knife to a gunfight. Best that the fight never happens. I may think somthing you do is not ok, and vice versa. Where does that leave the blog?
Hence the need for rules enforcement.
@ DS:
And as I explained, and you failed to understand, that’s b/s. Your comments about jordan’s mom were not the equivalent of bringing a gun to a knife fight. They were the equivalent of igniting a nuclear bomb. On a site where consensus is hard to come by, your comments were universally condemned and reviled.
You don’t like the way the blog is run, so you think it is OK to blow it up? Even though there are numerous alternative blogs out there that meet your exacting preferences? That’s more than a little fanatical. And incredibly selfish.
claude
Then be careful about which country you invade then. Don’t assume everybody plays by the same rules if there are no rules.
And you hurt a parent by insulting/hurting their child. If you’re concerned about a persons mom, you hurt that mom a lot more by attacking their child. Parents can take a lot directly. But if somebody insults their kid, guess how quickly they’ll react and how hurt they’ll be?
Answer: A lot.
And how do you remotely know that their parents aren’t reading any of this? Don’t assume they don’t. Maybe you should take the assumption that they do. What will you write then?
By the way, you didn’t choose your real name at all. You weren’t even born more than likely when that name was chosen. You did choose your name here though. That argument of yours is invalid. So, it isn’t asking a lot of people to use the name you personally chose is it?
@ DS:
Smh. You never are going to get it, are you?
Not a parent are you claude?
And you’ll never convince me that racist remarks aren’t including all their moms. So why don’t we just stop it and accept that you think insulting 1 mom is worse than insulting millions or billions of moms. That is what one does when one insults races/whole female gender. I can ask you to change your way of thinking about it like that, but it won’t do any good.
Best we end this thread. Nothing good can come by continuing it.
DS you are here to create drama. You continue to have personal issues with multiple posters, and engage in personal non football related matter. You continue to complain about how the blog is run, yet you are one of the worst offenders. This blog forum is popular because people are free to express themselves within reason. If you want more stipulations and rules governing where you post, then I suggest you take Claudes advice and go somwhere else. Otherwise, accept the way this blog works, cut out the after school special behavior you typically engage in and enjoy a great team on it’s way to a special season.
Claude,
Unfortunately, BS does not get it. This person comes here today and condones someone telling MSC that I don’t like you but sorry to your wife? BS needs to be banned. Please just go away for good DS.
If BS left this site is would be like a gush of fresh air, when he is here it is like a lingering fart that won’t go away. A delusional Smither zombie. But the worst kind, the other Smithers know that AS has his flaws but this nut case, says AS would of won multiple super bowls if he had JM teams of the 80′s. It says Marino and Fouts are not elite and also constantly compares AS with JM. Not Harbaugh, not Alex Smith, not anyone on this universe thinks that AS is better than JM. It needs help. The Smithers other than Prime thinks he is out to lunch.

See? I do. Again, you just suck at reading. Hope your job/life doesn’t involve reading road signs. You’d be dangerous.
Exactly – if the other sites have “ignore” buttons, then it’s highly probably that her comments go unheard by most and she doesn’t get the reactions she’s looking to invoke.
Personally, I’m a BIG fan of adding an “ignore” button here. Would make the site much more enjoyable if you didn’t have to sort through 100+ daily posts of nonsensical dribble and hypocritcal holier-than-thou cr@p.

It would be nice for one reason. Instead of 100 comments I’d have to thumb through. Id only have 30 if bs was ignored . Wheeew
DS9, as somebody that goes to a lot of those sites you’re talking about with abuse report buttons, I can tell you those features are only as good as the moderation. One example is SFGate. It almost takes an act of God for somebody to actually get banned. Sure, they get their comments removed, but just last week, I went into a poster’s profile after he had spent the day calling other fans morons and idiots and other names and saw that over a three week period he had nine comments removed. That would seem enough to get you banned, right? No, he’s still on. Then there are the ones that do get banned and pop right back on with a new name, one poster in particular. Anybody that goes to the Gate – and I see many familiar names here from that blog – knows exactly who I am talking about. Him and a few others have almost taken control of that blog from Kevin Lynch and Eric Branch by having multible accounts and have no worries as to being banned. It’s a system that doesn’t really work that well other than getting “temporarily” banned.
md/49ergirl, the Ignore button does save some scrolling, but I think most fans can’t resist taking a look at what the “ignored” had to say and end up not using the feature. I just use it for those that I know are going to post the same thing they’ve been saying for years.
Good points, Space.
I’ve been on that site a few times – I can probably guess the person you’re referring to. Every site has at least one of those :-).
I’m still a fan of the button – mainly for my own personal gain. If others don’t want to use it, that’s on them.
spaceborn
Look at the Sac Bee webpage. Or ninersnation (not a newspaper site even). As for the ignore button…funny story about that. I’ve been suggesting one for a year. Those suggesting it now were the ones who hated the suggestion from me. Interesting.
And I would use it. Most all the fights I get into here would end. Grant and those people who would be on that ignore list of mine know it. They don’t want that.
Try it for a week. Bet this site looks like the actual newspaper. Professional and without a lot of stuff that has zilch to do with football. Bet that never turned you away from reading a paper (professional without added insults).
DS9, I go to all those sites and like I said, it is about how it is moderated. It works best when the moderator stays on top of it; some are better than others, like Barrows. But I’ve also seen sites like NFL where it got so out of control, that they changed the entire format of posting. I remember talking to the NFL moderator via email and was told that they had one fan they figured conservatively had over 100 names!
But, yes, the Ignore button is a good thing if actually used and is great for individuals who are being stalked or if you are simply tired of reading the same thing a hundred times. Take care and happy Trekking!
spaceborn
Go there right now then and tell me how many posts you find where personal insults are used. Compared to here. Because I don’t see any (at least not less than 1 hour or so ago (last I looked).
And it is sad that a post asking for others to not namecall has so many replies. The thread should be 2 posts long. The first is the proposal. The second is the agreement. In no forum but here is it ok to do this. If we were all meeting, nobody tells to another like this.
Anyway, hope you’re enjoying the victory. I apologize for the off-shoot discussion.
“As for the ignore button…funny story about that. I’ve been suggesting one for a year. Those suggesting it now were the ones who hated the suggestion from me. Interesting.”
Love the revisionist history.
First off – there were plenty of other comments to ignore before you came around – you were not the first to suggest it.
Second – people were so against the ignore feature that some went as far as researching how to implement it using WordPress and sent it to Grant (Adam, was that you?). The rest of us begged PD to activate it.
Third – you do realize that if an ignore feature is implemented that you’ll be left talking to yourself, right?
@49erGirl:
The adage “Be careful what you wish for; you may receive it” does come to mind.
DS9, I don’t understand why you insist that I go to Barrow’s blog. I read it everyday like I do here and other blogs. Yes, I know there are less direct insults there, but there are plenty there that know how to indirectly insult other fans by attacking their stance on the team and not naming posters by name. They find ways to get around the guidelines. I’ve been posting on BB’s, forums, live chats, etc. since the early 90′s, back when there were no graphics and there was simply a white background with only New Roman Times fonts and there is nothing I haven’t seen.
And the one thing I’ve learned over all these years is that you need to be “thick-skinned” and not allow those that do not directly influence your personal life to bother you. They are just names on a screen, DS9, so why worry about them? If you take this stuff personally, which is what many of them desire, then you have allowed them to do what they want, which is to provoke you into defending yourself. Ask yourself, “If they disappeared from this blog tomorrow, would it affect me?” DS9, believe me, it wouldn’t. You don’t even know them, not even their real names, so why care? Only the ones you care about in your personal life matter. Friends, relatives and relatives’ opinions matter, nobody on a football blog does!
There’s an option for “ignore” on this forum, it just needs to be installed.
“There’s an option for “ignore” on this forum, it just needs to be installed.” Some already have it, it’s the ability to not respond.
spaceborn
Nobody is making any impact on my life. I would just like it if people showed the minimal amount of respect for one another.
My family/friends matter. Blogs are just for fun. Adults should be able to have fun without acting as they often do. I’ve been around since the start of the internet as well. I’ve seen quite a bit of offensive material about all sorts of stuff that people spend too much time on.
Way I see it, every coach and player, person in the organization is up for discussion. I’m cool with that. What happens here and what some here think of me don’t impact me at all. I would like a more professional run place though from a source (newspapers) who depend on its customers to believe you to be a professional/good source of information though. Given the very real situation that newspapers are in jeopardy, I’d think things would be a little better. The fact they aren’t, and the fact that the newspaper business is in trouble may be more closely linked than you think.
And that isn’t good. Forget about the football stuff. Actual important stuff (not football) can only happen with newspapers, and they are vanishing. Blogs are a direct link between the newspaper and the customers. If they are run well, they bring a lot of credibility. If not, they don’t. That isn’t good spaceborn. Not good at all.
Jack
Not doing a good job ignoring posts this thread are you?
The sweetest stat of all:
“Smith is 17-4 as a starter since the beginning of the 2011 season, and those 17 wins are the most in the league during that span. Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady and Joe Flacco all rank second with 16 wins.”
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/49ers/2012/10/07/qb-alex-smiths-finger-injury-doesnt-appear-serious/comment-page-1/#comment-101305
That’s awesome, but we all know that AR has an * next to one of those losses. Still, an amazing stat.
I’m going to go ahead and give Alex some props for this game. I diss him all the time and I can praise him when he’s on, too. ALthough it’s Buffalo, I still saw some growth in Alex yesterday (not that my opinion of him matters a whole lot, but still). That play to Kyle Williams where he recognized him turned and went for the short comeback ball shows some recognition and reaction while the play is happening. This is a key improvement in the way Alex goes about his business, known to be terribly robotic a lot of the time. Hopefully he takes this, stores it away in his memory banks, learns some other reactive type skills and blazes forward with a terrific season! Surprising to see a player still have the ability to grow after 7+ years in the league, but I guess it can happen. Here’s hoping he becomes a top-shelf QB in this league. I usually want him out of here, but after the NO game in the playoffs last year and this game, I’m still holding out hope that he will continue to grow, but at a faster pace, and he becomes the QB we’re used to seeing in SF.
“Surprising to see a player still have the ability to grow after 7+ years in the league” #coachingmatters
I also give Alex Props for winning yesterday and the coaching for unleashing the playbook. I still think Kaepernick is the future of this organization. I don’t think he’s ready yet, but I think he’s profiting from sitting right now. Given the choice between the two, I’ll take the long term returns on Kaepernick over 2 amazing performances in 7 years.
The problem is some have been so closeminded and blinded by bias they’ve missed the fact that this has been happening for sometime now. Smith was improving his game before Harbaugh arrived, but they were losing so it’s like it never happened. Harbaugh has helped Smith grow as a QB, but most of the credit belongs to Smith himself because he has gone through the equivelant of NFL hell and emerged strongwilled and unbreakable. This guys spirit and perseverence are remarkable.

I don’t think anyone isn’t admiring his resiliency or that he’s gone through hell in terms of coaching over the years. I just think many of us feel the onus is equally on the player to grow, not rely on purely coaching. It takes an entire team, but there is a huge variance between players as well. Most superstars probably would still be superstars regardless of the support system. I don’t think you can convince me that Payton Manning would be a below-average QB in the same god-awful system we had here for 6+ years running. Not all players are equal, but given he was picked #1 overall, I would expect that Smith would have brought a whole lot more to the table than I need to be coached and hand-held through my growth.
AS leads the league in QBR after 5 games. Hard work and good coaching does pay off!!
*Total QBR*
@ Hofer:
Yes. Coaching matters.
Kind of a weird deal with this. Last season the Smith Haters promoted the TQBR as the end-all, be-all measurement for a QB. This season you don’t hear/read much about it
I think Smith ended up being around 50 on that scale which is exactly average. In five games this season he’s on top.
Just a weird thing. Shows some signs of growth I guess.
On a side note, CBS and Maiocco I guess are both reporting that the sprain IS on the throwing hand, not the non-throwing hand. I actually wonder if this didn’t happen earlier. There was some reason for the wobbly ducks – I figured it was the wind.
After week 5 last year year Alex was top 10 on ESPNs TBQR. It was the Smithers who enjoyed that stat, not the haters. Jim Trotter was the Alexian hero when he listed Alex as a top 5 QB.
After week 5 Alex went back to being Alex and ended the year as average. Hence, trust issues.
Hofer
That’s great to see. I delighted to see Alex put some touch on passes when needed. Good times, indeed. Now come the NY Giants. This will be a major test – especially for the Niner D.
I’d actually be interested (sort of) in what Howard Cosell has to say about this.
Hahaha. Ooops. *Greg Cosell*
Held in such high regard.
Adam,
He did throw some wobbly ones yesterday. I’m guessing the wind played a part, but they were on point so I’m guessing he’ll take it.
The wind was gusting yesterday and that was the reason for RF’s pick. At the stick there are times to laser it in there and there are times to float it – RF floated the pass that was picked off.
Yeah, I wasn’t too worried about it. Used to happen to Montana all the time.
They showed the flag and the refs getting the full force of it so I figured it was wind. But now the finger thing… Kinda made me wonder if the injury didn’t happen earlier and cause an issue with the grip.
Wow!!! That was an amazing game by the 49ers this weekend! Fun to watch, fun to cheer, and nothing to get upset about! I refuse to nit-pick this week – will leave that to Harbaugh and co because as a fan, I’m 100% happy with the way they played against the Bills :-)
Alex had the best regular season game of his career – he looked good throwing the ball and running it, too (and what a way to celebrate being over .500 for the first time in his career, too!)!
It was a little frustrating early in the game when the stupid penalties on Iupati and Gore wiped out to beautiful passes to Crabree and Davis, but there were so many that counted it’s impossible to dwell on the ones that didn’t. The offense was clicking on all cylinders in a way I haven’t seen since the mid-90′s :-)
Defense was brutal!!! That pick by Rogers in front of the end zone was the nail in the coffin. After that the Bills quit – their entire team quit. They were beaten into submission on all sides of the ball.
Fantastic performance, fantastic game, fantastic finish – great confidence builder with the Giants coming to town!!! Cannot wait until next Sunday!!
I’m going to leave the indepth breakdowns to Jack from now on as he is better at it than I am, but a couple of points I wanted to post about.
All the angst over the way in which the Niners won in NY seems to have vanished. Funny how that works. I’m not an I told you so kind of guy, but I didn’t get all the hand wrenching going on last week and after a win like this, it just goes to show how gameplans change in regards to the opponent, the enviornment, and the conditions. Teams typically play a different game on the road than they do at home due to the home team getting an edge of adrenalin from the home crowd. The gameplan is usually more conservative and close to the vest. It’s why you don’t put so much stock in one or two road games and use them as a barometer for the season. The Niners have now won 8 straight regular season games at home. They have been dominant in two home victories this season. This team can play any style anywhere and have a chance to win. That is a special quality that most teams in this league don’t have. Don’t gloss over that when watching the 49ers win in different ways from week to week. It’s coaching first and foremost along with the team being willing to go all in with the gameplan. This is a TEAM and that is why they are so good right now.
Second, the unfortunate news from msclemons, should remind us all that this is just a game. Things get quite heated and mean spirited at times in here and that’s fine, but keep it in perspective. It’s football not life.
One other thing I’ve noticed that I forgot to mention. I seem to have read a number of posts stating this is the best game of Smith’s career. That seems to be happening more and more frequently as time goes on. It was said after the first two games of this season, and was said a number of times last season and in the playoffs. How long until it just becomes Alex Smith played the way Alex Smith can play?
In a 64 game career Alex has had 4 great games. Saints, Eagles, Lions and this game.
When he climbs above .500 for good games folks will embrace him. As long as he is hovering around the 1/16 mark for good games some skepticism is warranted. 1 of 16 is an anomaly, not a trend.
@msc:
Why do you insist on miring yourself in the dark days of Nolan-Singletary? You keep bringing up Smith’s entire career as if his play from 5-6 years ago (or even 2-3 years ago) is at all relevant to how well he is playing now. Every game he plays under Harbaugh is further evidence that the failures of 2005-10 were largely not of Smith’s making.
Doesn’t what is happening this season make sense when you consider that, for the first time, Smith is in his 2nd year in a competently devised and competently coached offensive system? Coaching matters. A lot. But don’t take my word for it. Listen to Joe Staley.
If you want to make a meaningful, reasoned assessment of how well Smith has played since Harbaugh took over, then look at the games he has played since Harbaugh took over. Quit looking back to the Nolan-Singletary years and acting like they tell you anything meaningful about Smith’s performance in 2012 or are at all predictive of Smith’s future performance.
@claude I guess I have trust issues with Alex. After the Saints game last year I drank a full keg of Alex kool-aid and the very next week he went back to being Smith. Then the team left him hanging in free agency while the “evaluated” Manning.
The dude has been letting us down for 7 years. I know he has the physical skills, and by all accounts he is a fantastic person but I don’t trust him on the football field yet. I’m not getting burned a 3rd time by this guy.
@ Msc:
Compare Smith’s playoff performance against the Giants with Ryan’s, Rodgers’ and Brady’s performances. They’re all fairly comparable. No QB had a particularly good game against the Giants’ D in the playoffs.
The point I am trying to make is that maybe it wasn’t Smith who let you down. Maybe it was Nolan/Singletary/the circumstances. Doesn’t Smith’s improved performance and success under Harbaugh support that theory?
And I understand the hesitation about getting burned again. It’s rarely a good idea to drink anyone’s kool-aid. That’s why I prefer to proceed with cautious optimism. But the signs are promising.
@Claude I would agree that cautious option is warranted at this point. Alex played a hall of fame caliber game yesterday. Nothing in the past can take that away from him.
I’m still hedging my bets though. ;-)
msc,
4 great games total for his career in your opinion? I disagree but you are entitled to your opinion.
As to your second point, the team and organization played a large part in the record. He’s also had more good games than 1 out of every 16. He’s 25 – 17 as a starter since coming back from the second shoulder injury. 57 TD’s to 28 Int’s in that same time frame.
He’s been playing well for awhile now. Some just refuse to acknowledge it.
*optimism
The iPhone auto-correct should be renamed auto-fornicated.
And rocket, Alex may have more than 4 great games on his resume but I don’t remember them. He’s always shown flashes of brilliance. Maybe this year he’ll show some consistency. If he does the 49ers will probably make the Super Bowl and Alex will finally be embraced in North California. That would be awesome for all 49ers fans.
MSC,
Please let us see your list of great NFL QB’s that had poor coaching and organizations.
Warren Moon comes to mind.
Here’s 4 more.
Troy Aikmen. He didn’t win a game in 1989. It wasn’t until he got weapons the next year that he looked better.
JIm Plunkett. New England. Sf. Then goes to Oakland to be a back up and wins the SB.
Steve Young. Started in TB. Team had little success with him as their QB. We all know what he did here in SF.
@exgolfer Rashaun Woods, Kwame Harris and Kentwan Balmer also played with bad coaching in a bad organization. I don’t make excuses for them and I don’t make excuses for the Precious.
Performance is all I care about.
I’m fairly certain the Jets gameplan didn’t call for Alex to go 12-21 for 138 yards. I’m fairly certain the Vikings gameplan didn’t call for Alex to miss wide open receivers and throwing the ball 10 feet over Crabs head for an Int in what should have been an easy pitch and catch. You can pat yourself on the back all you want but some rational fans might call Smith’s performances this year inconsistent. I’m fully on board with Smith as the starter and think the calls for CK after the Jets game were way off base. Having said that, Smith has been inconsistent this year. Even Roman and Smith himself have said they’ve left alot of plays on the field that could have resulted in many more points. I’m ecstatic about Smith’s performance yesterday. Finally involving WR’s at all levels of the field will open up this entire offense. IMHO this game could be the start of something special in San Francisco. I have literally been waiting to see that type of performance for 8 years. Even against the Saints in the playoffs last year Smith was great at the end but very average during long stretches of that game. This past game was dominant from beginning to end. Now Smith must build on this game and consistently make the throws he made yesterday or all the angst and calls for CK will come back very quickly. You can call it winning in different ways but when you have a run first game plan it doesn’t excuse the QB from checking down when he has a wide open WR or throwing wild on easy throws. That’s never part of the game plan.
+ 1,000,000
Houston,
I wasn’t trying to pat myself on the back and you missed the point. Teams tend to perform better at home than on the road where they typically play tighter and more conservative. A number of people were on here last week ranting about how bad the passing offense looked, without giving regard to why. Smith missed badly on one deep pass to Crabs in NY. He was 9-13 at the half. He did not have a terrible game against the Jets, he simply wasn’t asked to do a whole lot and the passing game was a secondary part of the gameplan from the get go, and practically ignored in the second half.
He had a bad game against the Vikings. I haven’t read anyone say any differently, but what tends to happen on this board is people obsess over the one bad performance and overlook the 4 games he has played well in and they’ve won. I’ve read “this was the best game of Smiths career” after quite few games going back to last season and that’s the point. Smith is capable of this type of play and has played very well in 3 games, well enough in one and not very well in another this season. Look over the best seasons by QB’s in NFL history and you will see some bad games sprinkled in with the good and great ones. Every QB has off days, Smith is no different.
The standard we hold this team and invidual players too is unrealistic at times. Games are won in many different ways, but the bottom line is the win itself, not how they looked doing it.
And Houston before you designate yourself as the voice of rationality, go back and look at your comments after the first couple of games. You react irrationally quite often.
Houston- Come’on man, the INT, the ONLY INT, AS has thrown was not 10ft over MC’s head, it was 3ft behind him…and if you had looked closely you would have noticed that AS motioned that he thought MC should’ve stuck his right foot in the ground and come back for the ball instead of rounding off his curl pattern. It was a classic mis-communication, not a classic AS overthrow.
Most rational fans and even many non fans, even haters have said AS has been very good this year.
I certainly won’t tell you the point of your post but I read it as being related to the gameplan. Smith played poorly against the Vikings and played poorly against the Jets. He was indecisive in the pocket and took unnecessary sacks in both games. He was wildly inaccurate in both games. Fans are going to react when the QB has bad games. It’s a fact of life that even the QB’s acknowledge is just part of the game. Even if the passing game is the secondary part of the gameplan, the QB is expected to make the right reads, deliver the ball on time and accurately when pass plays are called. Smith did none of those things against the Vikes of Jets. The coaching staff found ways to generate offense without using Smith as a passer. Good for them. That’s what good coaches do when a player is struggling.
I haven’t designated myself as anything. Just trying to help prevent you from breaking your arm attempting to pat yourself on the back. Someone needed to call you out on your all knowing, overbearing post. As far as any comments I made the first few weeks, I stand by everything I said. The Packers are a majorly flawed team that conceivably may not even make the playoffs. If the 49ers play the same game they played against the Packers, then they won’t even make the NFCCG. Smith MUST incorporate the WRs in the offense at all levels of the field to maximize the potential of this team. He finally did it against the Bills. I hope he keeps it up against the Giants. If he does, I can see the 49ers dominating opponents the rest of the year.
Houston,
Ok, if you see it as my patting myself on the back, then so be it. I’m not going to waste anymore time defending my intentions.
That doesn’t change the point: the reaction to the win in NY was irrational. People obsessing over the QB play in a 34-0 win is obsessing over any negative point you can find. It made no sense then and even less now after a dominating win at home. Saying a QB who completed 69% of his passes in a game against the Vikings, was wildly inaccurate is irrational. He missed a throw to Moss and threw his first pick in 200+ attempts. To say you are exaggerating is an understatement. He missed Crabs badly in the Jet game no ifs, ands or buts. Doesn’t mean he was having a terrible day or was wildly inaccurate. If you see the passes to Manningham as being terrible throws then we are incapable of holding meaningful football discussions because we obviously have very different views on what constitutes good and terrible.
Your posts after the GB game were comical in how out of touch and biased they were. The fact you continue to stand by them, just shows you haven’t learned anything or are incapable of changing your opinion.
@ rocket:
You tried, but some people just refuse to see what is right in front of them. And some simply refuse to consider any facts that are inconsistent with their existing beliefs. They will always believe that the Earth is flat. Trying to reason with them any further is pointless. They won’t get it because they refuse to.
@Claude
+ 1
Claude,
As is usually the case, you are correct. Blows my mind that people are still giving this guy grief, but you’re right in that I’m not going to change their minds. Probably won’t be the last time I try though.
@ rocket:
Yeah, I know. I too cannot help myself sometimes.
I think we all want to see consistency from Alex & the passing game. I think we all agree Alex had a fine game.
OK, we agree, that’s a wrap, don’t anybody say anything more! just goofing….
Clem & Houston and others have been quite clear and specific in loving how Alex played yesterday. They remain wary for the future; is that unreasonable? Maybe not. I’m more optimistic than they are, but none of us can see the future.
Here’s a pitfall though, if we use 600 yds as a standard for offensive production, there’s going to be a lot of Alex/Roman bashing ahead!
You guys really do crack me up. You make up the new Triumvirate of Alexcuses. Let’s call you T&A for short. I’ve always liked that term so consider it an honor. Are you the guys who came up with Participation Medals for kids? Everyone gets an award no matter how they play. I can hear you now, Alex tries real hard and he’s such a nice guy so he deserves our blind allegiance even when he’s awful. I like him too but sometimes he sucks.
Rocket, on one hand you acknowledge Alex played poorly against the Vikes and then you attack me when I point out specifics on what constitutes poor performance for Alex. Nearly every pass he threw over 10 yards was way off target in that game.
I am always happy when the 9ers win. I’m also looking forward to a SuperBowl appearance from the 9ers so when Alex or any team member plays below a certain standard they deserve criticism. Alex was great yesterday. If he can maintain that level of play then the 9ers can walk over almost any other team in the NFL. If Alex plays like he played against the Vikes or Jets then it could very well be one and done in the playoffs for the 9ers. When I watch the games on Sundays I’m looking for the team to play to a 49er standard. This is the Steve Young philosophy and I think it’s a great attitude.
HOU that’s the problem with old timer
49er fans. They want the exact same brand of football as the dynasty 80′s team.
As great as that was, this is a new era and brand of 49er football. JH is following the Walsh blueprint but he is doing it with more emphasis on physicality, power football.
I appreciate all of that but don’t be critical of Alex. He is doing his job and everything JH has asked of him. Its not the player, it’s the system he is playing in that ask him to do what he is doing.
Don’t hate the player, direct your criticism if there is any, to the organization that has implemented this system.
@ Houston:
Sorry, but the Earth is round. No matter how fervently you believe it is flat, it isn’t.
And Obama was born in the United States.
Yes, he’s played so inconsistantly this season, even when factoring in those supposed gawdawful performances, he’s stting at the top of every QB rating system you can find. Which can only be interpreted as:
1. ratings systems are flawed beyond recognition and don’t give the real value of a players performance. Explanation #1 haters are currently clinging to.
2. Stats padded against terrible defenses. Explanation #1B haters are currently clinging to. AS isn’t the only QB to play these teams, how come those QBs aren’t at the top of the rankings instead?
3. the usual “elite” QBs are stinking it up this season. Given the media accolades to EM, TB, Shaub, Ryan, etc, that is unlikely approaching zero possiblity.
Fall back on Occams Razor. AS has been very good this year, the “terrible” performances merely eye of the beholder constructs.
Hey guys,
After Slex Dmiths career performance of 303 yards and 3 touchdowns against the Buffalo Quitters, I’ve decided to become a Smither for the rest of the week. That is until Sunday night when he falls on his azz again against the NY Giants. Inconsistency is what it is. Alex is headed to the hall of fame. Alex is elite. Alex is the master! Alex is a pro bowler! Best QB in the league!
@ Clawed. That’s all you’ve got? That is so damn weak. You’re better than that man. You are a typical Obama supporter. When you can’t defend you’re opinion you resort to ridiculous attacks that make absolutely no sense and aren’t related to anything.
And like clockwork…
ribico:
>>Stats padded against terrible defenses. Explanation #1B haters are currently clinging to.
some bipolar guy who changes his screen bame avery few minutes:
>>After Slex Dmiths career performance of 303 yards and 3 touchdowns against the Buffalo Quitters
>>That is until Sunday night when he falls on his azz again against the NY Giants.
Another of your sterling predictions, nostradamus?
Man, we are getting tired of beating you like a tired mule. (apologies to the other tired mules posting here)
Ribico,
I’m a Smither like you. Why come down on me man? Alex is terrific. He’s #1. He’s my hero. Got my AS jersey man! Wearing it all week! Alex is fresh!
Houston,
Don’t hate on Alex. LOVE Alex, love ALEX. He’s elite! He’s throwing long! He’s the master of the deep ball! #1 in QBR. Alex is the best QB in the league. Give us the Super Bowl trophy now! Alex is elite!!
@ Houston:
That’s all you’ve got?
That’s all I need. The facts are on my side. All you have is a belief you formed prematurely years ago and have since refused to reconsider, despite all of the contrary evidence that is available. You are the sporting equivalent of a flat earther or a birther (please ignore the rhyme; it is not intentional).
As ribico accurately noted, your description of Smith’s play this year is largely a construct that exists only in your mind, not in the actual world. Smith’s accuracy in the Green Bay game was not “extremely poor,” but that’s how you reported it. You also suggested that Smith’s play was sub high school QB level. Your credibility is shot.
Every time you offer your “expert” opinion about Smith’s play, someone smacks you down with actual facts that disprove your theory. Smith’s alleged inaccuracy on deep passes is but one example. That you refuse to accept the facts doesn’t mean you aren’t wrong. It just means you are stubborn.
For the season, Smith is completing 69% of his passes, averaging 7.9 yards/attempt and has a TD to INT ratio of 8 to 1. If only he was playing well, the 49ers might actually be able to do something this year.
@ 23welcher:
There you go again with the same tired, worn out straw man. No one has said that Smith is elite. Yet.
You cannot deny that all of your prior assessments, pronouncements and predictions regarding Alex Smith were wrong. They were. Instead of acknowledging your ignorance, however, you instead create the fiction that the argument is about whether Alex Smith is elite, so that you can save face, continue to argue, and annoy the other commenters.
You may be fooling yourself (I am sure that is not difficult), but you aren’t fooling anyone else. Except maybe for bay. And Houston.
The moment JH became HC, we was enamored with Alex Smith. Alex Smith was enamored with him. And they have accumulated the best W-L record in the NFL since that double enamored took place.
That is the start and middle of the story. The end comes in another decade after this new dynasty has won multiple Super Bowls.
Anybody thinking they can evaluate AS’s game better than JH is in need of some therapy and a heart/brain implant. Because they lack both. They may also want to check out the quote “You think you know, but you don’t. And you never will” and see if it applies to them.
*he was enamored with Alex Smith.*
Jordo, I’m a bleeding heart liberal so I’ll help you out. It’s a not-very-well kept secret that the NYG defense is going on reputation this season, less so on actual production.
http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/2012/10/inside-the-49ers/49ers-giants-matchups-part-1-49ers-run-o-vs-giants-run-d/#comment-289402
So after our team takes them to the cleaners, I give you permission to use that as your latest excuse for AS’s success. Just make sure to thank me come Sunday night.
It’s really sad that I have to use the same smack talk against a supposed Niner fan that I do with real Giants fans.
Houston,
I’m not going to try to tell you Alex is elite. All I’m looking for is some acknowledgement from his harshest critics that he’s a better player than they give him credit for. You fall in this category which is why it was directed at you.
There’s nothing wrong with pointing out he didn’t play well in Minnesota. He didn’t have a good overall game, but what tends to happen is that the anti Smith contingent embellishes it to the point where you’d think Smith was a division III scrub.
He missed on a couple of passes he should have hit. He missed seeing Crabs open for a TD on a rollout, he couldn’t bring them back to win. All fair points, but you can’t call a QB who hit on 69% of his passes in that game, wildly inaccurate. There were a handful of mistakes made on both offense and defense that decided the game. Your take on it seems to focus on Smith was terrible and that’s the main reason they lost. That is what I take issue with because it’s an unfair analysis of the game as a whole.
Same thing with the Jet game. You said he played terrible in this game as well. Yet he was 9-13 for a 100 yards at the half and the team only threw it 8 times in the second with a comfortable lead. Again if you want to say he threw a poor pass to Crabtree, go for it, that’s true; but to say he was terrible is hyperbole. He was not a factor in this game because he wasn’t needed to be at least in the second half. Instead of blaming him for bad throws, go back and look how close those throws to Manningham were, and how Manningham was held up by Kyle Wilson on both. That was the difference in the passes being incomplete; not a bad throw from the QB.
I totally understand a player getting criticized when he plays poorly, and Smith is no exception, but what you and a few others tend to do, is to go overboard focusing on the bad, and just pass off the good with a statement like “he played well, but we’ll see how he does next week.” He’s played 3 very good games, 1 not so good, and 1 where he was relegated to handing off for most of the second half and was a nonfactor. He leads the league in every efficiency category, has a TD to Int. ratio of 8-1 and the team is 4-1.
Instead of coming in here and enjoying the win, the Smith critics are trying to forecast when he’ll fail next. Jordans post above is a clear example of somebody who wants to see a player fail rather than enjoy team success. It’s a sad miserable way to be imo.
@ Rocket,
I have stated Alex played better last year than I thought was possible for him. I said he is playing well this year compared to where he came from but he’s still not up to the standard the team should expect. I stated his last game against the Bills was his best game as a pro and if he can consistently deliver those same results then the 9ers have a great shot at winning the Superbowl. You’re blind allegiance to a single player makes you completely ignore all the positive comments I’ve thrown his way. The fact of the matter is that Smith and the passing game were the weak link last year and up until this past game against the Bills the passing game was statistically even worse than last year. Last year was a great year for the 9ers and Alex took a step forward but thru 4 weeks he hadn’t taken another step forward in year 2 of this offense. You can blame the game plan, being on the road, or any of your other multitude of excuses but the fact is that Alex was not playing at a level that would yield playoff success prior to this past week. I can come up with stats to prove all those points if you like but we all know you will just disregard the proof and start blathering about birther flat earth idiocy. Plus it’s alot more fun watching you implode when someone disagrees with you.
@ Houston:
If by “implode,” you mean exposing your nonsense and making you look foolish, then, yes, rocket is imploding.
up until this past game against the Bills the passing game was statistically even worse than last year.
Really? Prior to the Bills game, Smith’s completion percentage, TD/attempt and interception/attempt numbers were all better than last year (when Smith was the 9th ranked passer in the NFL). The only 2012 number that was off from last year was Smith’s yards/attempt number, but not so much that his passer rating suffered. In fact, his passer rating was higher than last year’s number, and his total QBR was way up from last year. Sorry, but once again, the actual facts do not agree with what you say.
… the fact is that Alex was not playing at a level that would yield playoff success prior to this past week.
Smith played well enough last year for the team to beat the Saints, get to OT in the NFC Championship game, and come within a Kyle Williams’ muffed punt of going to the Super Bowl. Even before the Bills’ game, Smith had been playing better this year. Moreover, prior to the Bills’ game, the team was 3-1, after playing 3 of its first 4 games on the road. With the exception of the Minnesota game, the 49ers controlled and dominated each of their opponents. Even with the Minnesota loss, the team was universally recognized as one of the best teams in the league.
As happens far too often, you have once again demonstrated that you don’t know what you are talking about. The Earth is not flat, no matter how stridently you insist it is.
Dammit. I screwed up the html again. Sorry.

Please do lay out some stats. Go to Teamrankings.com
and look under “Passing Offense.” They even have a little calender icon which let you go back before the Bills game, and it show majority of 49ers’ passing stats are better in 2012 than 2011 after Wk 4.
@Professor Balls
Keep up the good work. :]
And I think the newest blog on Teamrankings.com is gonna be about Alex Smith, Professional Quarterback but the link brought up “Page not found” when I hit it.
Stay tuned. LOL
Houston,
I think you need to look up the definition of implode because you obviously don’t know what it means. I wrote a post yesterday that you responded to with anger over the fact you thought I was patting myself on the back. So you’ve gone from misinterpreting what I said, to now believing you somehow are pushing some buttons. Do you ever deal in reality? Are you seriously one of these kinds of people that ignores everything with their fingers in their ears saying ” I win, I win”, because it sure seems that way? If you want to paint me as a Smither because I point out factual info that doesn’t coincide with your view, be my guest.
Here’s reality Houston: The facts don’t back you up. You say you can post things to back you up but they don’t. It’s the same deal that you tried with your Carr/Smith comparison. You slant the numbers you want to use and ignore the others.
I haven’t ignored your positive comments on Smith. They just pale in comparison to the negative is all. Even when you do convey a positive comment you follow it with something negative. In other words, you offer backhanded compliments while knocking the QB’s play.
If you honestly believe Smith performed terribly and was wildly inaccurate, that’s your business. If you think he didn’t play well against GB, that’s your opinion. However, don’t be surprised when people wonder about your motivation in doing so, because it doesn’t make any sense on any scale when looking at the game of. It is heavily biased stubborness and an inability to accept what is actually happening on the field. It’s obvious you cannot get past your preconceived opion of Alex Smith. You’re entitled to it no matter how wrong it is.
My “ignore” button already has a DS sticky on it. I’m just waiting for the PD to activate it (lol).
Like wise AES
Here’s a thought for all of us to run through our heads: Is the DS-bashing perhaps a bit heavy handed today? Should we take a breath? Don’t have to agree, but it seems kind of like a gang mugging to me. No censorship, we can all reflect and decide on our own. Worth a thought…….
+1
however, I think everyone could tone it down a bit….
Brotha, let’s just look at the source of people
bashing. Same ones doing the Alex bashing, go figure?
Some folks are just miserable cu$ts!
easy does it, Prime! : >)
Not talking about blame though, just self-restraint occasionally. Sometimes you (or whoever) could just mutter to yourself about about what a dork I am or so&so is without posting it. Spitball fights are a waste.
Disagreements are fine, and everybody disagrees with everybody sometime. Hatfields/McCoys though…ehh!
Prime,
Claude and Rocket are Smith bashers? DS is what it is and can’t help itself but to reply when moving along would be a better choice.
The non football babbling get’s tiresome, and I have been guilty of it myself in the past. It keeps asking for an ignore button when in reality it is already available to all of us.
Let’s be completelty honest here, who adds more drama/instigating fights on this blog, 23 or DS?
That might be a draw : )
Fair enough
Prime
Who is suggesting a way to put an end to any such posts? Me or 23?
23 wants it. He’s actually said he likes it. I don’t.
DS you know I got your back. You know what your talking about when it comes to football, the other stuff, well that’s your business.
23 is clearly on here to infuriate people. We could actually get back to a decent blog without always having to talk about Alex, which we all know who can’t let it go!
Yet you can’t help but respond and keep it going.
That last post of mine didn’t come out quite right. Sounded a little defensive there. Sorry prime.
And the other stuff doesn’t happen at all if a few things were different. I think they bring up Alex more than anybody. I defend him more thn I bring him up. Interesting how that works. Talk about a guy on the team they like little bit more. Would help off-set the ones where they express their displeasure for the captain and leader (according to the announcers opening before the game yesterday) of the best team in the NFL since last year.
I will tone it down for now, Brotha.
Only because you asked – not because he/she/it didn’t earn the treatment he/she/it received. Still appalled by the lack of remorse over the disgusting comments he/she/it made last week.
Thx 49erGirl. We all make our own beds, so to speak, so I get that. And my remark truly wasn’t directed at anyone in particular, I just noticed some piling on.
Confronting someone’s statement or point is OK. I know I’ve been guilty of reacting to a post based on my reaction to something that person said earlier, and I like it when I choose to hit the “Cancel Reply” button!
Nobody needs to read my angst, LOL.
So, I try to just roll my eyes and say Pffft! Then my wife hears that and says “On the 9ers blog again?”
Brotha,
Maybe she should consider why people are letting her have it. If everybody is bashing her, it might be time for her to change her ways.
Change her ways?
(lol) Big P. In DS’ world, 7.04 billion people are wrong and he/she is right.
Ohhhh, I know.
So much I want to say here ,but I’ll take the compassionate and mature advice of Brotha Tuna. Great post. Thank you.

@ DS:
“I stand corrected on the circumstances surrounding oneniner’s banishment”
@Claude
Obviously, you can choose any argument regarding oneniners banishment from this blog.
But I’ve here since the M.Maiocco days, and oneniner was in fact banned for his vile. At the time there was a poster named TOPCAT who could give 23J a run for his money on his ill-feelings regarding AS.
I had a few run-ins with TOPCAT myself when I would attempt to defend AS, but he was relentless.
oneniner and TOPCAT would constanly get into piss fights. And one day oneniner totally went verbally psycho on TOPCAT and md, thereby causing his banishment.
So this makes two banishments that I know of.
And yes, look at the attacks oneniner was leveling on Grant and his dad about a day before he was banned. oneniner/latino heat also continued to call Grant ‘vato’ after Grant clearly told him to stop.
DS, may protect this guy all he wants, but oneniner’ record speaks for itself.
AES,
Topcat was/is Tim. One of the many reasons he gets no respect from many around here.
I did not know that rocket. But I don’t recall him being bounced from this blog.
We used to have some good posters a few years back like ‘marcos of stockton’ and ‘stampeed’ who have since gone awol or changed their status like TOPCAT did.
Top posters today are Hofer67, Adam, Claude, Rocket, Undercenter, Txtree, Big P, MSC, MD, Brotha Tuna, Jack Hammer, 49erGirl, El Guapo.
I enjoy the insight, facts, and balanced opinions and thought process of these posters. Always look forward to reading their posts.
Aes… I wonder if the same are on here with different screen names now. Some I think I can put the pieces to. Like there was a guy named Alex smith…. I wonder if that same guy is ribico… Or prime time.
I’ve always known Tim to be Tim. Never knew he had a different screen name. I remember getting into it with onelame, Alex smith, oregoniner, and a guy names gilroyAl… If you new posters think its bad now….. Wheeeew! It’s got nothing on a couple of years ago when the 49ers and Alex smith sucked out loud. Lol
Aes…. Are you thinking of Telecat??? That dude was always going off about smith. And he was usually right about it. IMO! He is one of the guys and myself that oneniner couldn’t handle. And got banned!! I’ve even asked J23 if he was Telecat… Because they both were and are not smith fans.
TOPCAT – Telecat, came back as bb the kitty, (.), and knows who else. All banned. Best known for wishing career ending injury to AS, finally revealed himself as a run of the mill Chiefs fan.
@rocket:
I didn’t know TIM was also TOPCAT. That’s another reason not to miss him.
@ninermd:
I hope you mean TOPCAT, not Telecat. Either way, that’s some great company you were keeping.
According to LSX, Telecat/bbthekitty/. was an animal shelter volunteer who was caught molesting cats. LSX outed him a few months ago, and he never came back.
Of course, in my opinion, Telecat is only slightly more despicable than TIM.
.
.
.
Just kidding.
.
.
.
Sort of.
My bad MD, you’re right, it was Telecat!
My apologies to anyone named TOPCAT.
But I tend to agree that TIM does not sound like or have any writing tendencies that would make think that he was Telecat.
If Telecat was bb the kitty, then that dude took a huge step backwards. I remember the injury comment and wasn’t cool with it.
And I never got why everyone had a problem with Tim. Because he gave his opinion on smiths play? I didn’t see any posts where he went over the line. Like bad taste comments when a man is begging for prayers, and a certain other defending that comment and cracking coward like jokes about others Moms. Claude…… Tell your guests in that glass house to put the rocks down bud.
@ ninermd:
The problem with TIM has little to do with the content of his opinions and everything to do with the disingenuousness, insincerity, hypocrisy, and false piety of his comments. The fact that he also was TOPCAT only serves to reinforce my view of TIM.
I think you have misapplied the glass house analogy.
>>If Telecat was bb the kitty
bb pposted a link to some stupid graphic that had the word “telecat” in the URL. Open and shut case? No, but reasonable shadow of a doubt for me.
Claude…. Don’t think I did. The biggest hypocrite on this sight by faaaaaaar is your friend ds. I have been calling it out on this for awhile now. The folks I respect on here and that’s football knowledge would be
You
Lemons
Hammer
Big P
Bay
Houston
Rocket
Tim
Ribico
49er girl
Basically everyone except ds…. Way to many reason why. But first is because its an Alex smith fan only
And knows absolutely Nothing about football. Getting on a computer and looking up stats doesn’t mean you know anything about the game. Yes the people I named don’t agree about the past, present, and future of Alex smith. But everyone that I named know about football. That’s the company I keep. Whether or not we agree or disagree.
@ ninermd:
Sorry, I misunderstood your glass house comment. I thought you directed it at me for disliking TIM.
Why do you keep laying DS’s comments at my feet? Just because I agree with DS on other commenters’ attitudes about Alex Smith doesn’t mean we are in lockstep on every subject. In fact, I believe that I objected to DS’s comments regarding jordan’s mom as forcefully as anyone.
Several months ago, LSX laid out a compelling set of facts regarding Telecat/bbthekitty/. and the cat thing. Telecat/bbthekitty/. did not dispute the pertinent facts, but simply disappeared.
Claude,
Yeah he went by topcat for awhile. I know this not only because his style is easy to recognize, but I saw him put the same comment on multiple forums – as he still does – only when he posted it here, it was under Topcat instead of Tim.
MD,
As Claude said, the problem with Tim is not in his opinions; it’s his disingenuous, double talking way of expressing them. I liken Tim to the guy who shakes your hand and then shoots you as you turn to leave. In other words, Tim would make a great Politician.
I’m just happy to see all multiple “lucky sp**m” York hating, boycott the team type comments gone – those got really ugly for a while.
I never knew Tim as anyone but Tim. I don’t think he and Telecat/BB the kitty are the same person/people. Never had a problem with Tim, but the other two were definitely questionable.
For the most part, this site has great contributors – I have a ton of respect for many individuals, including those with different views from my own. I learn a lot just reading through the comments – having never coached or played at a high level (or even a medium level), it’s definitely been a place where I’ve had to keep an open mind and listen to those who have more experience than I do. I don’t always agree, but believe it or not, I do listen!
Personally, there’s only a couple regulars that I don’t care for or respect – but I won’t name names….I promised I would lay off, lol!
Good Morning Faithful
So, 4 more weeks until the General Election. Now at my house we already are under siege from political mailers, e-mails, and incessant voice mails. To me that’s way too much but I guess some here aren’t getting enough because political polarity is leaking into these discussions too. I’m typing this with a smirk, its not any big deal and I’m not going to go all Blog Police like I did yesterday on the DS stuff, but I can’t help but wonder how bringing up some of these hot button peripheral issues can help calm our Wild West Show. Maybe it will ease off after the election…maybe.
: > )
BT, the answer is another menu button at the top of this blog called DRAMA. If you woke up wanting your DRAMA fix go to that site. If you want to discuss FOOTBALL stay on this site. There is enough nonsense on both sides. NOTICE how I stay away from it (DRAMA)!!!?? Come on people this is a FOOTBALL blog. I’d be embarrassed to ask GC to police this or that. Ridiculous!
How’s it going Hofer? Big game this week!
@ Hofe
It may end up being a complex menu! LOL
Thanks Jack. Yes, this is a gauge for the rest of the year and the playoffs. Looking forward to it!
Brotha, you ain’t seen nothing yet until Alex Smith runs for political office!
Why don’t you go away 23? You said you would. I made a deal with you that if you and md left, so would I. Never heard back.
Since Jack is cool with you two blasting away at people, go to his site. See how often I think about you when you are gone. I didn’t write more than 2 posts mentioning you when you aren’t here. You guys complain about oneniner. He is gone. You complain about him just as much. If you go 23, I won’t complain about you. Promise.
Prime
This whole thing is solved with an IGNORE button. It is available. One blogger even gave the link to it to Grant.
This place would get a lot better if it were implemented.
BS,
I have a boo boo on my big toe, can you please make a recommendation. dummy
Neal
Get in a tub of cold water. Turn on your hair dryer and drop it in the tub with you in it. The impact of the cold water and the air blown from the dryer will push all the pain away.
Try that and get back to me in the morning.
BS, I don’t have a hair dryer, I am sure you would want to blow on my toe toe because you are full of HOT AIR.
I’ll buy you one Neal. I care for my patients. Just have Grant give me your address, and I’ll mail one to you.
It will cost me some money, but it is for the good of us all.
Can’t say I’m shocked you don’t have a hair dryer. Had you a woman, you’d have and know how to use one. But your great intangibles and your personality just keep those women away from you. Skin heads don’t need hair dryers though.
BS, I have a full head of hair, you can ask Grant, he knows what I look like from FB, my women is beautiful and a bit of a Tom Boy, so she does not have one, not into girly girls.
So she is a butch is what your saying, that makes sense!
My offer is genuine. In these hard economic times, we all have to lend a hand, or hairdryer.
DS do you do labotomy’s? I’m sure him and his friends could use one as well.
BS,
I will leave the site right this second, if you do the same, I will take one for the team, unlike you, this is not my social life, and can live without this place. Can you do it?
