Harbaugh explains why Jenkins and James have not played

SANTA CLARA – This is a follow up to a blog I wrote earlier today on the 49ers top two draft picks – A.J. Jenkins and LaMichael James.

Here’s what Jim Harbaugh said about them at his Monday press conference.

Q: You talked in July about how A.J. Jenkins is going to be outstanding, yet there was an injury and he didn’t get on the field. Mario got injured yesterday, but A.J. still didn’t get on the field. Why hasn’t he been playing?

HARBAUGH: We talked about Michael, Randy, Mario have all been playing at a very high level. We’re working toward it. He was active, dressed for the game. He’s being integrated into the plan

Q: But Ted Ginn was in on the three-wide-receiver sets, which means Ginn is ahead of Jenkins on the depth chart.

HARBAUGH: Yeah.

Q: Do you see that changing?

HARBAUGH: Anything’s possible there, but that’s the way it has been.

Q: Is there a role for LaMichael James with Kendall Hunter injured?

HARBAUGH: Yeah, there’s a possibility of that.

Q: Why wasn’t that the case yesterday?

HARBAUGH: It wasn’t part of the plan yesterday, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be going forward.

    Well that clears things up…..

    • Neal says:

lol, a Jim Harbaugh press conference, you come out with more questions leaving then you do coming in.

  2. old coach says:

Grant did anyone ask with the rams loading up eight in the box all day why were’nt we throwing any deep patterns?

    • htwaits says:

I think the Rams were also making Kaepernick think they were playing eight deep too.

Seriously, they were playing off the receivers which left the slant open. That might have been a better call at third and one over the infamous pitch play.

Maybe a plain old run inside the tackles or play action role out would have been better “game management” wise.

      • htwaits says:

        third and three

      • pkny says:

Brilliant defense strategy. Having those CB’s play off was smart. The thing is you can’t have too many slant plays if jerry rice is not in uniform. By sending the ends up field the CB playing off now becomes a safety playing the QB. Fisher had seen two games to see what CK can do. Miami has seen 3. We’ve havnt lost 2 games in a row. Big game next sunday.

I just want a win. This ram tastes like #hit

    • Mike in SF #2 says:

They blitzed a ton and kept outside contain on Kaep which didn’t give him enough time to let the deep routes develop or get out of the pocket to hit deep routes. It was a great defensive game plan for the Rams.

    • pkny says:

CK never had time. Fisher contained him by pushing the ends up forcing him to make a choice “look up and pass” or accept defeat from the pressure and bail.

Fischer really didn’t game plan for sacks he had his bets on CK not staying in the pockets and not going thru his reads.

      • pkny says:

Not knocking CK. I have never had faith in Running QB’s. Once you shut down a part of their game they always lose. Running QB’s need to be almost perfect in all they do. I look at cam, rg3, vick, etc and everytime they struggle is when the stats board don’t light up. Its rare that this kind of players win close games like brady, payton, brees etc

        Just saying!

  3. NINERS says:

You know what makes me sad? Going to ESPN.go.com/nfl/ and seeing Alex Smith STILL ranking number 7 on the QBR scale.

    • bayareafanatic says:

You still cry that Seinfeld is no longer on tv too?

    • Grimey9er says:

If Kaep had enough playing time his QBR would be higher than Alex’s.

      • NINERS says:

Perhaps…but he hasn’t had more playing time. No time for hypothetical claims, sir. The time is here and now, and AS’ name is on the list. Playoff run imminent. Division title to secure. Second seed? I’ll not hold my breath, but one can hope…

      • bayareafanatic says:

        Grimey,
AS’s career QB rating is 79.8. Colin Kaepernick in three starts has 133, 90.6, and 83.9.
If a QB can start out that way you can see why their are so high on his ceiling. He’s only going to get better and better.

      • Grimey9er says:

ok let me put it another way. his QBR IS higher than Alex’s right now but he doesn’t have enough attempts to qualify.

      • NINERS says:

But my unease comes from the question of whether or not now is the time for him to move towards getting “better and better” – I’d argue now isn’t the time (not that JH will change his stubborn mind!)

      • Grimey9er says:

We were actually talking about ESPN’s new stat, which has interesting results when compared to the traditional NFL rating. QBR is more comprehensive as far as including sacks penalties and qb running plays.

      • claude balls says:

I think you guys are mixing up passer rating and QBR.

      • Grimey9er says:

The timing was definitely tricky. But my hope is that Kaep makes his mistakes, finds his groove, and gets hot in the playoffs.

      • MontanaMan16/Not so easy to be a game manager, huh Kap? says:

What we had before was a reality! Now we just have hope!

    • Crab15 says:

And It makes me sad that Britney Spears is not 18 anymore.
Get over it….. Alex is old news now.

    • NINERS says:

      Yep, we’ve still got hope!

  4. NINERS says:

It is on TV…every Wednesday where I’m at! Great show really.
