SANTA CLARA – Alex Smith spoke in the locker room Wednesday afternoon. Here’s what he said.
Q: Is it bittersweet that the 49ers are going to the Super Bowl and you’re not the starting quarterback?
ALEX SMITH: I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a little bittersweet. Yeah, I want to be out there. It’s what you work for coming into the season. That was the mindset. That was the goal for me. But at the same time, it is a team sport and these are my teammates. You go through so much together, especially these guys who have been here for a chunk of time. If you can’t be happy, there’s something wrong with you.
Q: Colin has taken everything by storm these last few weeks. Have you been impressed with him?
ALEX SMITH: Yeah. The thing I think I’ve been impressed with the most, not so much the playmaking which I knew about, I think guys around here knew about, it’s the lack of young mistakes that’s really jumped out at me. Most young guys that come in, yeah they play good at times and they show flashes, but they also seem to have those young moments, rookie moments, boneheaded things. He hasn’t done it. Period. He’s played good ball. Really played patient, played smart.
Q: Do you help with that?
ALEX SMITH: I have no idea. That’s a better question for him. He sees really well when he comes off the sidelines, especially during games. I try to relay anything I’m seeing, but he’s a smart kid. He sees thing well out there.
Q: You said he didn’t seem rattled when the team went down 17-0 nothing. Did that surprise you?
ALEX SMITH: I don’t think anybody was, especially at halftime on the offensive side of the ball. Yeah, we were down 17-0, but you’re in the middle of a game and you’re on the sidelines just trying to get something going. Getting that first score, all of a sudden it’s 17-7 and you’re back in it. And then we score again. We go in 24-14, but we had scored on our last two drives heading into halftime. I think guys felt really good with the game plan and what was going on come halftime even though we were down 10. It was just a matter of sticking with it.
Q: You didn’t do anything to lose the job. Has this shaken your confidence at all?
ALEX SMITH: Not at all. It’s the nature of sports. He got an opportunity, stepped up and made the most of it. That’s the deal. That’s how I got my start in college. It was no different. The guy in front of me got hurt. That’s how I got my first start. It’s just the nature of team sports.
Q: Before Colin got his first start, did you know he could be this good?
ALEX SMITH: Like I said, no question out there you see the playmaking ability on the practice field. For sure. You saw it in preseason. The thing I’m shocked by is the consistency. He hasn’t done the thing that a lot of quarterbacks do, which is lose the game for a team. He’s done a great job of preparing.
Q: Does he talked to you much about how he feels or if he’s nervous?
ALEX SMITH: As QBs, we’re not talking about our feelings. More so coverages and progressions, things like that. We talk football. That’s the great thing about the QB room. It’s a great group of guys, Scott as well helping out. Got a great room. It’s all ball in there. We just focus on preparing and getting ready to win.
Q: You played the Ravens last year. What does he have to worry about against that defense?
ALEX SMITH: It was a unique thing playing them on a short week and flying out there. It really seems like a blur. Don’t remember much from that game. We’ll learn from the film, for sure, saw how they played us. Things they did. Other than that, we know they’re a good defense. They have good players. It’s a matter of us going out there and executing.
Q: What are you doing to feel like you’re making a difference?
ALEX SMITH: Same thing I’ve been doing the last ten weeks. My job is to prepare and be ready to go, one. And then two, anything else I can do, whether it’s helping Colin or anyone else on the offense, on this team, in this locker room. That’s my job. I’m going to put everything I have into that. It hasn’t changed.
Q: Can you imagine not being a starter next year?
ALEX SMITH: There will be a time to talk about all of this after this game. For now, I’m just concentrating on the game.
Q: Who’s job did you take at Utah?
ALEX SMITH: Brett Elliott. Last play of the game against Texas A&M in Week 2. I started Week 3 and he never played again. He transferred.

Thank you Alex. Good answers that didn’t seem like Coach Speak to me.
Be ready, bubba! All hands on deck!
Alex the Benevolent.
He deserves a lot of credit for showing the young superstar how to be careful with the football.
Could not resist could ya?
It’s what I’m thankful for, Beefcake. I think he’s probably had exactly that effect on Kaep, which is worth a great deal. 5 INTs over the course of an entire season is nothing to scoff at.
An entire season?
I think Mr. E is referring to Smith’s interception totals for the 2011 season . He appears to be honestly complimenting Smith.
JPN
As I’ve repeatedly stated, I am not an Alex Hater. He did a marvelous job last season and accomplished what I had hoped he would.
I hoped for improvement this season, didn’t get it, witnessed his mental demise in the Giants debacle, and moved on to Kaep, who I have liked ever since I watched his Wolf Pack highlight reel on draft day last year.
So, yes, I compliment Smith for the effect he seems to have had on a guy who idolized Brett Favre growing up.
I can beat that, Mr. E. I have supported Kaep since I saw him play his first year starting at Nevada, and in many great games thereafter. I do regret I was not able to go to the 2010 Boise State game, but at least I was there to see Kaep embarrass Cal that year.
I admit I had concerns how well Kaep would do in the NFL, but I began to be cautiously hopeful after this last preseason, and I gave up all my reservations after the Bear’s game. I felt bad for Alex, because I believe he played well most of this year (the Giant’s game excepted, although the team as a whole played poorly in that one) and that he played well enough to deserve to come back as the starter, but as Clint Eastwood (as William Munny) tells Gene Hackman (Little Bill Daggett) in Unforgiven – “Deserve’s got nothin’ to do with it.”
I, fortunately, was at that Boise St game among several others during his tenure at UNR. I’ll never forget it. It was about the 3rd qtr when my wife said to me, “wouldn’t it be great if he (Kap) went to the 9ers?” I said “ya, but I doubt that’ll ever happen” you should seen the look on our faces when they traded up and announced his name. Priceless!
JPN,
You mentioned movies, and there’s one that fits this situation pretty well, I think. Damned if I can remember the name, but I think it starred Clint Eastwood and George C. Scott, and the story’s about an old man and his daughter who own a small piece of oil-producing land, in the middle of plots owned by Scott’s HUGE oil company. One night, Scott comes to the trailer the old man and daughter live in, to try and intimidate them into selling their land. Eastwood, who’s working with the man and daughter, goes outside with Scott to talk it over. All of a sudden, Eastwood’s got his shotgun under Scott’s chin…and the next sound you hear is dripping “water”. Scott looks down, and realizes that Eastwood’s peeing on his leg. “Don’t worry about it” Eastwood says. “Businessmen do this to each other all the time.”
Thank you Alex, for what you’ve given the team and the Bay Area..
I wish you continued success going foreward whether it’s with
the Niners or elsewhere …
I’ll be rooting for you, no matter which team you’re on …
(u-hhhh … unless… you’re playing the Niners, of course)
Straight up class. That’s been his M.O. ever since he’s been here. I’ll be rooting for him, too. Love to have him here as the backup, but I think he deserves to start somewhere, and have no doubt that he will.
He is a good soldier.
Q: Does he talked to you much about how he feels or if he’s nervous?
Talk about a clown question.
“yeah, we hold hands, sing kumbaya, then hug each other and cry.”
Tough thing for Alex is he’s going to have to answer these same questions over and over and over and over during the next two weeks.
If at some point he goes postal and strangles a reporter I don’t think anyone will blame him.
No offense Grant, hope he doesn’t strangle you. Maybe Kawakami. I’d be cool with that.
Que bay neal and jordo/welcher (douche wand club) to bash Alex Smith in three two …..
Que a fight picker in 321….
I’m too late.
“Queue”
Could you be a bigger jackass? What a downer. Are you also pissed that the team is in the Superbowl with ck under center? Make that two Debbie downers for the two weeks before our first Superbowl in 18 years. WOW how bitter!
Not trying to be snotty, but the correct spelling would “cue”…if we’re correcting people and all…
Que = Spanish for “what”
Queue = a place where British people spend 80% of their lives. Also, a line, waiting list, drunk Spanish guy saying “wh-what?”
Cue = prepare for the next action
The expression is actually queue the music and it basically means line up the music and get the party started
Sourbread Sam,
Get off the crack, your making no sense. Get detox !!
A better question is…Is Stan bittersweet because on this blog he chastised those who didn’t vote for the 49ers making the Super Bowl-Like I did?
You do remember some hard core “fans” got cold feet don’t you? I STAN,kept the faith.
Again, far ahead of the curve. Its just genius like normal.
PS,What was the final vote on that?
Q: You didn’t do anything to lose the job. Has this shaken your confidence at all?
ALEX SMITH: Not at all. It’s the nature of sports. He got an opportunity, stepped up and made the most of it. That’s the deal. That’s how I got my start in college. It was no different. The guy in front of me got hurt. That’s how I got my first start. It’s just the nature of team sports.
And this should be the final nail in the “decision” coffin. Those who may think its a crappy thing to do, it’s football. And the other guy played better. Interesting read I never knew Alex was on the other end of this kind of deal.
If only Kap could have as much class as Alex, we’d be having a REAL winner!
What does this comment even mean? Who would be a “REAL winner”? Are you implying that Kaep doesn’t have class?
Smh.
LSX
Dee Phiant is a notorious racist. When he says “more class,” he really is saying “less black.” Don’t let his ignorant hatred get to you.
Mr Nothing, you really know how to make yourself look like an complete imbecile, don’t you. Pulling the race card!?!? WTF!?! So everybody who says something about Kap that you don’t like is a racist now!?!?!?
LSX
What I’m saying is that Alex helped him, showed him around, mentored him and I don’t see much gratitude only cocky arrogance. Being a REAL winner is being a good person to others.
Dee Phiant
There’s plenty of evidence of your racist comments from several months gone by. It’s common knowledge that your every insult thrown at CK is based in your obvious prejudice. Don’t back down from it now. That’s just cowardly.
And to your lame explanation to LSX, why don’t you go to recent interviews of CK and learn what he has actually said about Alex? I mean, that’s what you would have already done if you weren’t what you are.
@ Dee:
The suggestions that Kaepernick doesn’t have class, isn’t appreciative of Smith’s help, and is arrogant are contradicted by every interview/press conference Kaepernick has done. Can you provide even one example to support your claims?
@ Mr. E:
That’s a serious charge. Can you back it up?
CB
Can you do it for me? You’re the top-rated cut’n'paster on here. Don’t tell me your picking another fight with me now. It’s a new day. Perhaps better for you to just comment with others? No?
Mr Nothing.
Only Little boys want to be called Mr caus they think it will give them some respect. The fact that you put ‘everything’ in the same handle shows you have a serious inferiority complex. For you to announce that there is plenty of evidence of racist comments on my part but then UNABLE to produce even ONE racist comment shows YOUR lack of class.
YOUR posting of a RACIST comment about Asians shows what you really are……..
Dee Phiant
You lack the sophistication to comprehend even an iota of subtlety. And your racism is, as Harbaugh might say, “well-documented.”
That I don’t choose to, at this time, repost all your nasty comments does not mean that I can’t, or won’t, at a future time.
Oh, and the handle? Do some research before you attempt your psychoanalysis. You are way off base.
Arrivederci
C Balls
I think he mentioned AS once in the beginning, now it is all this short and curt answers. Alex must have spent a lot of times getting him better and all he does is complain to VD that he is a better QB after they lose a game. I’m sure that is the part that VD did not reveal but was said anyways.
Mr Nothing,
Your lack of sophistication is greater than I first assumed. Your belligerent accusations without ANY foundation make you look like a wannabee. In your blind self-justification it never occurred to you that I might be black myself…………..
Might be black yourself? Hahahaha. If that’s the case, you ought to do some serious psychoanalysis on yourself! That’s just laughable. A self-hating bigot. That’s like being married to Michele Bachmann!!!
Mr Nothing,
Stop shooting yourself in the foot! You have NO IDEA what race I am!!!
You’re the kind of black that claims Kap as a brother because he is successful. Otherwise you would’ve sneered at him for his white, wealthy, healthy parents and because his skin isn’t dark enough and having an education.
And since when does Michelle Bachman hate herself for being white!?!?!? Do you just make things up because you run out of facts?
Dee
Type “Michele Bachmann husband” into your Google search box. And as a general rule, do a little research if you’re not well-informed enough on a matter to speak on the matter without outing yourself as ignorant.
@ Mr. E:
The only one picking a fight here is, once again, you.
When you make an accusation like that, you should back it up. And if Dee’s racism is as “well-documented” as you claim, it shouldn’t be that hard to post one example. Your failure to do so makes your claim, and you, less credible. It also tends to confirm that you’re here solely to pick fights.
Mr Nothing,
NOW I get it. You make something out of nothing and then you call it everything. You don’t need facts, YOU JUST MAKE THEM UP and then they become YOUR TRUTH. Nothing is more pathetic than a big buffoon who calls people names without anything to back it up. NONE of your claims can be substantiated!!! BAR NONE!
CB
Why are you jumping in here? Blog police? Spend your time more constructively: search DPs posts and you can see for yourself; or just be productive by writing some original thoughts. Cool.
@ Mr. E:
Just trying to figure out if you are lying or just lazy.
Looks like Dee = Darren35 from the Barrows blog
To Ninermd’s original point, yeah, Alex is a grown-up and he gets it. Harbaugh is a ruthless competitor, as he’s paid to be and as Walsh was; they just have different styles.
And style is the crux of the other points made in my opinion.
1st: I totally disagree that CK lacks anything in Class; anything. He is not arrogant, period. Don’t like his style, his manner? OK, but that’s a subjective reaction, and I’m not sure how many people would agree.
2nd: Given that someone does’t like his style and calls him classless doesn’t in and of itself make him a racist. Courtland Finnegan is a classless, cheap-shot artist who’s a white guy. Same can be said for Rush Limbaugh. State Senator Leland Yee is a classless Asian guy, so what?
A-Ho’s come in all flavors.
Brotha
You make great points, but Rush Limbaugh is a white, racist arsehole, and Cortland Finnegan is black. That’s all fine and dandy.
Repeated shots meant to diminish CK based on being classless, athletic, dumb, and a running QB, in toto, reek of prejudice. That doesn’t fly.
@MD wow i think that might be the first Time in the history of sports blogs that Leland Yee was mentioned
“Asians can’t drive but they sure can ride motorcycles.”
- Miguel DuHamel
Nice job Alex, I hope you stay on the team next year. We need two good QBs. GO NINERS
He definitely won’t be on the team next year. He wants to start and were not going to pay our back up qb that much money. Wish him the best wherever he goes.
I agree, he probably won’t be here but there is such a thing as redoing your contract. Ever here of that? Just saying!
If he stayed and re-did his contract I would never want him to start for this team again. Where would the pride and winning spirit be if he did that? Me personally would want to start somewhere and try to prove benching me was a huge mistake. But hey I’m old school like that.
Ninermd, you’re bang on. I was listening to Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan a couple days ago and they were discussing that exact thing. Ryan was posing the question does AS stay at a discount to be on a great team and not uproot the family. Kirwan’s reply was if he does that, his career is done. He’s only 28 and he should still want to start.
It sounds like AS still wants to start and I’d be shocked if he didn’t head elsewhere. KC or Cleveland?
You are right Md. Time for Smith to move on and play somewhere else and for everyone around here to stop beating the dead horse. We are on the verge of a Superbowl and we are talking about something that makes no sense anymore.
Prime,
How bad does it hurt when you hear people berate Smith? Especially since you thought so highly of his play and said that Kap would fil miserably before the Bear game? I know it’s killing you to know that you were completely lost as to Smith’s ability to lead this team to a Super Bowl. Now you just want to throw him away? That’s laughable.
Jordan i do’nt get some people on this blog have stayed loyal to Smith and they are criticized as being smith fans not 9er fans now you are criticizing prime for moving on and proving himself to be ultimatley a 49er fan thru and thru
23, the people that berate Smith are the people that do not understand the game. You know fantasy football fans like you, Neal and Bay.
Nothing kills me or I ashamed of in having my doubts about CK. He was essentially a rookie asked to lead a championship team to a Superbowl. In fact, a lot of fans and people involved in the NFL had their doubts. There was definitely a case for that doubt and skepticism.
You on the other hand flat out said he was not the answer in training camp. So my question to you is, how bad does it hurt you knowing you have no clue about what the game of football is all about when you have made countless predictions and assumptions?
Prime,
Lets try this again. You didn’t say you had doubts about Kap. You said he wasggoing to fall flat on his face in the Bear game. Talked about how bad the bear defense was. Then you talked about how the defense saved him in
the Saints game.
I didnt need fantasy numbers from
Smith. I needed him to threaten the enture football field. I needed him to
not take 50 sacks a season. I needed
him to trust himself and his receivers. I
needed hom not to be afraid to make the tough throws through tight windows
Like I said I had my doubts and said he needed to win certain games in order to validate the switch. After each win he proved me wrong.
Unlike you I shut up with each win. You continued to vilify Smith saying he couldn’t do certain things, then he did while winning. See that’s hate, that’s a fantasy football fan. I had doubts not about Kaps ability, but because of the unknown in experience and the postion the team placed our SB aspirations on basically a rookie QB. Alot different than your “fan” approach!
Beefcake
Your about-face is commendable.
Prime,
Questioning the move is one thing, but that’s on Harbaugh. You were forecasting failure for CK. You were hoping for CK to play like crap because you wanted Smith as the starter. You wanted to say “I told you so.” After he played well, you kept setting goals for him to obtain your approval. He left you with no room for argument, when you were searching for a crack. You are on board now, which is great, but you can’t say that you merely had “doubt” about CK.
Prime’s Pre-game prognostications:
“I said I hope I’m wrong but considering the situation it will be very tough for the kid to deliver a win. He could not do it against a lesser defense in the Rams and now against the best possible defense in the league? Good luck! The haters have said all year that any QB could come in and run the offense and win games as Alex has. Well tonight might be another night that they are wrong and if Im right, I will be here scrambling up some eggs.”
“Just better hope your apparent successor does not crap all over the field tonight. He better secure that ball like the holy grail cause this might be his one opportunity to become an NFL starter Cal clown!”
“And when Kaepernick comes out and looks like a deer in headlights tonight and coughs up the ball, it will be an epic night cause then finally you haters will realize he is not ready. I can’t wait to see the egg on your faces later this evening.”
“I just don’t think the kid is ready and against this defense he is going to be shell shocked. I hope I’m wrong but it’s a bad situation to start your first game on Monday night, a playoff implicating game against an experienced ruthless turn over type defense.”
Prime’s in-game takes, after CK came out on fire:
“The Bears were clearly overrated. This is an inferior opponent.”
“Jack Alex makes all those throws and completions that CK made that half. What was different from that half to the half against the Cardinals? Bears are clearly not very good. CK was good but nothing that Alex has not or cannot do.”
“Ohhhh Neal a whole week, wow that is remarkable! You guys blew your load too early with Kap. He is not doing anything spectacular. He good by there is no upgrade there. You guys would be creaming your pants if it was Mother Theresa back there. No difference. Defence, running game and guys getting open. That’s 49er football.”
“The Bears are as bad as the Bills.”
“Chicago forget it was a football game. They are terrible!”
What happened to “the best possible defense in the league?” They got Kaepernicked. “I can’t wait to see the egg on your faces later this evening.” SMH. You couldn’t wait to see the backup QB fail? Spoken like a true fan.
So now Big P go find all the quotes after the Bears game and find yours and 23 and the rest of the haters regarding Smith this year and tell me who is the real fan?
Alot of people questioned Kap before the Bears game. You guys were ready to annoint him as elite after that game. I needed more. You seem to have a problem with that. Why?
I think fans doubts over Kaepernick were warranted up until the playoff games. The hate on Alex over the years fails in comparison of what Prime said.
Ok its thursday 1 week and 3 days before the 9ers first SB in 18 years, its time to stop savaging each other. We are all 9er fans and regardless of your opinion we all deserve to revel in our success equally. So for the benifit of the other 98% on this blog lets call a truce on the name calling and start a 9er party right now. One where even DS is invited. GO NINERS GO CK, GO AS, GO positive or go home.
I’m with you old coach, but don’t think it’s possible. There is just too much ego and personal vendetta involved for the extreme views on each side to let it go.
You have included yourself in that statement to right Rocket?
Old coach I was with you all the way up to the part where you said DS is invited. NO WAY!!!! THAT is THEE model of the smith NOT 49er fan. It’s gone an can stay gone, along with its little puppy onelame. Those two are pathetic and never belonged here in the first place.
So with that said lets forget about the past (except those two frauds) and join together for this glorious Superbowl game. We’ve ALL been wrong. Ill lead the chants…..
Who’s got it better than us?????????
NOBODY!!!!
(Forty Niner) first down……….
Ah ooo ah ooo ah oooo
Wheeeeeeeew!!!!
Prime,
Why don’t YOU go try and find all of the negative comments about Smith that you claim I made. I didn’t. I can find a bunch of very positive comments that I have made about Smith. Stop your “Hater” nonsense. There are only a few people on this blog that truly dislike Alex Smith, and everybody knows who they are. You just like to use that phrase with anybody that doesn’t agree with you, even if it makes you a hypocrite.
The perfect example of HATING: “I can’t wait to see the egg on your faces later this evening.” – Prime Time, salivating at the prospect of CK failing during his first start.
@big P, I thought we were past all this but for some reason you decided to stick your nose in it again while me and 23 were talking . For some reason you decided to go back to your childish ways. So far today you have said:
“You were hoping for CK to play like crap because you wanted Smith as the starter. You wanted to say “I told you so.”
“You just like to use that phrase with anybody that doesn’t agree with you, even if it makes you a hypocrite.
You obviously don’t want to keep it football and want to tell me what Im thinking and what my morivation is. It’s the mind reading school of Bayarea fanatic you guys like to use. Thats great. So since you have not moved past this Alex thing and you have a problem with me doubting CK earlier in the year, stay off comments and go play instigator and peanut gallery with someone else!
Prime,
I’ve never taken an extreme position on either side, but yes I can’t seem to stay out of the argument.
The Niners are in the SB and still the battle of Alex vs. Kap continues. Let’s bury it and move on.
Good call Rocket!
Speaking of DS, what happened to him? I was extremely busy the past month or so with family stuff and haven’t been on here much, but it looks like he disappeared?
Dude was always a bit off, thats for sure.
Prime
I don’t play fantasy football, although we all know you have a fantasy with Alex Smith.
LSX
I’m not sure what happened to her. Some say that she got banned by Grant. I think she lost it when Alex Smith lost his starting job and packed her bags.
Prime – your remark about fantasy football reminds me of a quote from this week’s SI in an article about the 49ers. Paraphrased from Greg Roman “We’re not into stats here, we play reality football. Not fantasy football.”
Everyone in America knows that Alex Smith is Niners backup QB. I wonder how many people know who Ravens backup QB is? Just
sayin…….Tyrod Taylor.
Who? Tyrod Taylor………..WHO???
4.53 40 at the NFL combine — threw an on-target bullet while running a tightrope along the sideline while QB at VaTech
Tyrod Taylor vs Alex Smith
If you were a general manager, which quarterback…
Never heard of him till now.
You guys haven’t heard of Tyrod Taylor? Umm…do any of you even watch college ball?
Sure he isn’t a big name, but he’s not bad. I’ve always been a fan
I just watch Stanford Football, not a huge college football fan.
I just looked him up, I never heard of his college either.
Tyrod would be a great back up for Kap.
Mr E. – How was his wonderlic?
Sorry Crabs can’t help you there. 40 time was actually 4.46 though.
So Darell Revis is on the trading block. He has one year left on his contract. Do you think the Niner’s would trade for a guy like this coming off and ACl injury? if so, would they take Alex Smith for him and will we have to pay a 16 million per year contract ? I’d take him at 7 million per year. Would he take a discount to win a superbowl on a real team?….what do you think?
Revis is hurt alot, don’t think they are interested due to that.
Big niner i do’nt think the 9ers will pay for Revis but i agree with you other than QB a true shut down CB makes more overall impact on a team than anyother single position. imho
Big Suede i think Honey Badger might slip a whole lot more than the 32nd pick. a team may be able to scoop him up in the 3rd rd
Ya never know coach- Kaepernick was supposed to go in the fourth round.
I am almost certain that honey badger is going to be a star player- sure he will probably be hurt- and he will be too small to cover any receiver taller than 6’1- but he will be a beast in the kick return game, he can field punts, and he is a defensive playmaker. Since the niners already have Culliver to play the big receiver- the niners can get afford to use a small corner
I think the 7 million dollars in cap space is more important than getting another player- the niners need to start thinking about how to keep this O-line, extending sooner rather than later
The D line needs help too, J Smith probably has 2 years tops playing at a top level, if hisn injury can be heeled.
The o line is very important. But a shut down corner with this defense would amazing.
Well Big Niner- they could draft the honey badger! He will probably be available during the niners pick.
No. They already have 2 young CB’s and a vet. They will look to add depth there but probably through the draft. That is much more cap friendly.
Revis insists on being paid like the best CB in the league.
No Revis. The guy plays a season then whines about his contract. Rework the deal and after a season, whines again. He’s perfect just where he is.
Revis three years ago, maybe. Look for a CB in the middle of the draft, a la Culliver a couple drafts ago.
Man- I can’t say enough good things about Alex Smith as a person. He is an awesome stand up guy. I truthfully believe Smith is a top 10 QB. I really hope he goes to a good team next year. And I will be cheering if he makes the playoffs.
What good team needs a QB? Only lousy teams, Cards, Bills, Jets, Browns, maybe the Vikings who are pretty good and have a lousy second string QB in Webb.
Jags and Chiefs too.
I think the Vikings are best- But I also think the Browns and KC will have quick turnarounds too.
Alex Smith with Norv turner is a good match- and then they have a stud at running back too. The browns might be my fav choice- because if smith was on minnesota- i think that would be a roadblock to the niners. (I am calling the packers having a poor year next year- heard it here first)
Smith+Singletary=no match
Suede “big tub of goo” is that a Terry forster refrence
Big tub of goo is a technical term Coach-
But I would have to say Roethlisberger is probably fatter right now than David Forster at his heaviest. I wouldn’t be surprised if Fat Ben was pushing 280.
Top 10?? Ur kidding right? Brady rodgers manning manning big ben phillip rivers rg3 luck russel wilson matt ryan flacco romo dalton brees cutler and u can argue healthy vick carson palmer to a lesser extent bradford … Now a mistake free top 10 qb i would by that. But the only time mistake free wins super bowls is with defenses like 200 ravens(dilfer) and 2002 bucs(brad johnson). And i didnt even mention the real face of the franchise….. CK7. Go niners
Romo, Dalton, Rivers, Vick, Palmer in a top 10 conversation? C’mon man!
No they arent but neither is smith.. I was just naming better qbs not top 10
How Romo & Palmer are better than Smith is beyond me.
steel …
I’d question a few of those on your list ..
Big Ben ?
From what I’ve seen of him the last two seasons .. I’d hafta guess he’s on the downside of his career ! … And the prognosis doesn’t look too good !
Romo . . ??
You’re kidding … right ?
Captain Choke … himself ?
A “healthy” Vick ?
When was the last time you saw that ?
The last Top 10 list I read
(a few months ago) .. had Alex at #4
behind the usual suspects ..
Brady, Breese, and Rogers …
Yeah… I know !!
Blew me away … too !
OK here is my top ten in order:
rodgers
CK7
Brees
Brady
Eli Manning
Wilson
Flacco
Matt Schaub
Alex Smith
Luck
You will notice there is no Peyton Manning- I think we just saw his last good year- his arm was failing fast toward the end of the season. And RG3 is broken and I dont think he will ever be the same player. Smith could be better- depends on which team takes him. I could see him move up to 6 or 7 with a good team.
Suede
You beat me to it, but here’s mine:
1. CK
2. Rodgers
3. Brady
4. Eli
5. Wilson
6. Brees
7. Big Ben
8. Luck
9. Bob Griffin
10. Peyton
11. Rivers
12. Flacco
13. Bradford
14. Newton
15. Dalton
16. Alex Smith
The Hype:
Matt Ryan
Matt Schaub
Mike Vick
Tony Romo
Bottom line: Alex Smith does the most with the least. Cam Newton does the least with the most. Those on the hype list are either very brittle or epic chokers. If Peyton didn’t have that lone ring, he’d be the worst choker of all time.
You guys must be high ck7 is only in his 2nd year he’s not a top 5 qb yet give the kid some time.my list 1 Brady 2 Rodgers 3 pmanning 4 brees 5 emanning ck7 might be in the top 10 tho
Hov
CK was statistically better than all your QBs over the span of his starts. He also beat Brees, Rodgers, and Brady in that time. He also is the highest-rated QB starting his career since 2008. He also led his team to the Superbowl in his first 9 starts.
More importantly, he makes it look like it’s all so easy, no matter what type of defense he’s facing. Most importantly, he’s got Harbaugh going forward.
It’s really not even that close. The only other guy in the discussion is Rodgers.
Mr. E. Nice list, but…
Phillip Rivers? That guy’s been horrible for a couple years now. I’d also question Bradford. He might be good, but I haven’t seen it yet.
I’d also probably move Newton up a few notches. He played quite well 2nd half of the season.
Big Suede, I wouldn’t put Smith ahead of Luck.
Other than that, I can’t quibble with either list!
I wanna play too: Top 11 QB list.
1. Me
2. Brady
3. P.Manning
4. Rodgers
5. Brees
6. CK
7. E.Manning
8. Ryan
9. Flacco
10. Luck
11. Rivers
If Colin can maintain his success in the 2013 season then I’ll move him up into or close to #1.

Mr. E. Nice list, but…
Phillip Rivers? That guy’s been horrible for a couple years now.
Rivers is an elite talent that has watched all of his best weapons leave for other teams because of one of the worst GM’s to ever be in the position and a limp wristed head coach. AJ decided he’d rather win pissing contests then keep good players on the team and his ego convinced him he could easily find replacement talent. He never replaced LT, Sproles or Jackson and the players he did bring in were/are terrible or injury prone(Meachem, Floyd, Matthews).
Give Rivers some decent weapons again and he’ll prove why he belongs on these lists.

How could you put Peyton over Eli? Serious question, assuming your goal is to win Superbowls.
Peyton Manning looked REALLY bad in that playoff game- and it was his arm- he was weak- and he is going to be another year older next year… what is he- like 37? I just dont see him being a top QB.
Then Philip rivers threw 15 picks and fumbles a ton- he isnt particularly quick and he takes a ton of sacks- I think like 50 this year- and again he is just getting older.
The Big Ben is really just FAT Ben. If a QB can’t have enough self-control to keep himself from turning into a tub of goo- how much do you think he is really dedicated to winning?
I think alot of you are just remembering the past and putting a little too much weight in what the QBs did in years past. Brady is not Brady of 2007- neither is Manning, Neither is Fat Ben-

How could you put Peyton over Eli?
Peyton came back from some pretty serious surgery and time away from the game and put up top 10 numbers on a brand new team. Eli couldn’t have done that in fact other then Peyton I don’t know many that could have had the success that Peyton had under the same circumstances. Peyton is still a top 10 QB even if his arm strength isn’t because of everything else he does and contributes.
CFC
You didn’t address the premise of wanting to win Superbowls. Eli made two epic throws to beat Tom Brady in his only two Superbowl appearances. Peyton is 9-11 in the postseason, and consistently throws the game-choking pick under pressure.
So why Peyton, other than for your fantasy team?
I’d argue that the Giant’s teams that Eli has played with were far better overall then the Colts teams that Peyton has been a part of. If you look at the numbers since ’04, Eli’s first year, then the first thing that stands out is that even though the Colts weren’t as strong of a team they still managed to be in the playoffs every year except in ’11 when Peyton was hurt, in that same time period the Giants miss the playoffs 4 times. Peyont from 04 on is 7-7 in the playoffs versus 8-3 for Eli. That comparison isn’t as impressive but it’s not giving credit to the 3 extra times that Peyton made it to the playoffs versus his brother even thought the Giants have had far better defenses then the Colts through the same years. 2006 was the only year the Colts played well consistently on defense and it’s their only year with a SB, not a coincidence. Look at 04, 05,07 08 and you’ll see a Colts team with a defense consistently ranked in the bottom 10 and the oppostie for the Giants.
Put Peyton Manning on the Giants from 04+ and that 9-11 record goes right out the window.
Coffee,
Not putting Russell Wilson in your top 10, is ridiculous, many GM in the NFL would take Wilson or CK as their first choice.
Good for them, I don’t.
CFC
So it was always Peyton’s teammates’ fault that he threw bonehead picks in many of those 11 losses?
I understand your position, but it fails to account for the difference between winners like Joe Montana (the ultimate winner) and losers like Tony Romo (the ultimate loser).
Still, I don’t know how one can say that Peyton’s teams were bad. Didn’t he have Marshall Faulk, Edgerrin James, Dallas Clark, Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison, Pierre Garçon, Dwight Freeney, Bob Sanders, & Robert Mathis?
Suede
These ratings by you and others are interesting. Rather than quibble on orders I’ll just offer a couple of points.
>As per Alex’s praise of CK, Colin is more consistent than Eli or Romo, or especially Rivers these past two years. The youngster is more consistent; hail to CK’s smarts and poise.
>Eli & Romo have carried their teams at times. Can CK7? I think he can. I don’t mind if some withhold anointing him until he’s shown a bigger body of work. We here can sit back grinning like the Cheshire Cat
Class act all the way. Class doesn’t always equate starter.
Alex smith is a class act and you know who else was, jeff garcia. So many ppl hold smiths sac but like TO u all wanted garcia out of here and he was our 4th best qb in the entire franchise. montana young garcia n brodie. I have no problem with smith but lets be honest. If our D wasnt top flight n Akers didnt break every kicker record last year we wouldnt have bn 13-3 and we are not in the nfccg. i like my qb to be a downfield threat. i like my qb to be gameplanned for n have it blow up n their faces. im tryna c how many catches our rb have that werent screen plays.. in the past 9 weeks. Well good luck alex. Im glad harbaugh made you a winner but im taking CK7 10x outta 10. Harbaugh made the right choice on draft night and he also made the right choice on that october afternoon. Go niners and be well Alec Smith, wherever you land
sheesh ! ..
You’re not just a little over the top on CK.. are you ?
Nah … I can understand it .. Kaep is the most exciting thing to happen to the Niner Nation since … well … I did like Garcia ! … he was the last Niner QB to take the team to the playoffs..
But, the only thing that concerns me about CK is… will DC’s have enough tape on him to shut him down next year ?
… or … will he embarass them, too ?
I am impressed with the fact that no game seems to be too big for him..
Good times ahead … that’s for sure !
@Steele…. Maybe you have heard of Y.A. Tittle or Frankie Albert. They both are at least argueably as good if not better than both Garcia and Brodie. Tittle is in the hall of fame.
I wish Alex smith nothing but the best, he is a class act. If the 49ers have the game put away in the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl, I hope Coach Harbaugh will let Alex take at least one snap during the game.
+1 That would be a nice gesture of appreciation
-1. That would be a completely gratuitous gesture IMO.
Ribico
Why am I not surprise by that statement? So what will happen to your avatar once Alex leaves town next year?
Why does Rib’s avatar bother some here? CK and AS get along and work together. It’s not a scenario where you have to like one and you have to dislike the other. Just not a long term situation where they can both reside on the team.
Interesting tidbit of information regarding AS being elevated over another injured QB while in college.
If anyone knows the glory and the throes of the sports world it’s AS. Yet, I can’t think of anyone who has been more gracious and supportive in his current circumstance than Alex Smith.
Kudos to AS, 100% class.
Alex: class act.
“The thing I’m shocked by is the consistency” – I think many of us would have to agree. Kaep’s accuracy and decisionmaking are a revelation.
Steelematic: By what criteria do you rate QB’s?
My hope is that we will get a draft pick for Smith. If there are 2 or more teams interested in Smith i think we will be able to work a trade. By trading for smith as opposed to waiting untill the 9ers cut him a team will be able to get him for alot less money. In the age of salary cap football that makes a huge difference. If there are 2 or more teams interested i think we could get a 5th rd pick in 2013 and a 3rd rd pick in 2014
Old Coach
He’s at least the 16th best QB in the league, but getting paid as though he’s the 22nd best. His current contract is EXTREMELY favorable to whatever team controls it not only for value, but also for the ability to cut ties after next year without consequence if Alex regresses without Harbaugh.
@Dee…. Sorry i disagree i love A.Smith but i do’nt see cocky arrogance in CK. What i see is loose confidence
I saw where JaMarcus says he’s working out to make a comeback. He’s got his weight down from 320 to 308! He can probably run like CK7 or RG3. He’s a Gazelle. No! He’s a Cheetah! He could be the next Nate Davis!
Actually, I suspect its more likely that he’s hallucinating.
Tape a cheetah to his back.
I love that commercial.
IMHO Kaepurnicus is the best player in the NFL right now.
Thy righteousness affirmeth’d.
Q: Who’s job did you take at Utah?
ALEX SMITH: Brett Elliott. Last play of the game against Texas A&M in Week 2. I started Week 3 and he never played again. He transferred.
I have a hunch that Alex Smith will be transferring to another team next year.
Hey guys, I was just thinking, if next years Madden cover is left for a vote to the fans again, do you all think CK7 will win the vote since he’s the new hot QB of the NFL? I would hate for him to fall victim of the Madden curse due to his early success.
I’ll vote against him and any other 49er 100 times at least. Let’s start a campaign to get Russell Wilson on the cover.
Yup, glad PW did not get on there last year!
Ck deflects curses. He’s already beaten the SI cover curse.
