Kaepernick: “I eat a lot of five guys right now.”

SANTA CLARA – This is the transcript of Colin Kaepernick’s Friday press conference, courtesy of the 49ers.

What are your emotions right now as you’re about to jump on a flight and head to Atlanta?

“Excited to get there.”

You mentioned a couple of days ago that you liked watching Randall Cunningham, Donovan McNabb, some of those other guys. Did you watch how they disguised the ball and faked handoffs and stuff like that? Was that something you admired about their game?

“There were a lot of things that I admired about their game, they were complete quarterbacks.”

You seem to do a really good job with the fakes on the read-option and whatnot. When did that become part of your routine? When do you feel like you mastered that aspect of it?

“High school and college. That was just part of our offense, it was something we had to do.”

Did you do the read-option in high school as well?

“No, Wing-T.”

Earlier this week, talking to your father, he said that you were adamant that baseball was secondary to football. What is it about this game that, although you had a chance to play baseball, what is it about football that took that to be your priority?

“There’s just a passion about football that no other sport can give you. In football, if one player messes up on offense, the whole play is dead. To get 11 people doing everything at the same time, towards the same goal takes a lot of effort, a lot of hard work. There’s just something about being on that field.”

The teamwork idea?

“Yeah, that’s part of it.”

You talked earlier in the week about your routine here after practice, what you do. What’s it going to be like for you to get on that plane today and do you have a special routine when you go on the road? What’s it going to be like for you when you get to Atlanta?

“It’s going to be the same routine that we always do. It’s just going to be in Atlanta, not here.”

Coach talked about [RB] Frank Gore not initially maybe buying into the read-option here. Can you talk about that process when you tuck it into him? Is there ever a tug of war when you decide to maybe pull it out? What are your keys, what are you looking for to determine whether to let Frank keep it or to pull it down?

“Well, it depends on what we have called, how we’re reading it and what we want to do. It’s really just a feel by Frank and [RB] LaMichael [James] and all of our running backs. They’ve been doing a great job with it.”

Is there ever a tug of war?

“At times, there’s time where he’s trying to take it and I’m trying to take it. But at that point, he sees something so you’re going to give him the ball. He’s going to be a Hall of Fame running back. He knows what he’s doing.”

Do you ever have to do any kind of reality check? That you’re actually here doing this, something you’ve been dreaming about since you were a kid? Do you ever stop and think? Do you have time to think or is it all working on plays and things like that?

“I don’t have time to stop and think right now, there’s too much work to be done.”

Is your approach pretty much, this is just a business trip for you guys and how much work is there left to do in Atlanta?

“This is 100 percent a business trip. This is what we’ve worked for all season and all offseason.”

There was a story in the Reno paper today that’s said that you use to really like McDonald’s and you don’t seem to have a McDonald’s physique. What was your nutrition like when you first got to college and was where it sort of changed?

“Never been a big nutrition guy, so for me if I workout enough I feel like I’m going to be alright.”

Do you still do fast food even in the NFL?

“Not so much McDonald’s anymore, but I’ll still eat my fast food.”

What’s your favorite?

“I eat a lot of Five Guys right now.”

Was there, before you played that game in New Orleans, was there anything that had prepared you for that kind of sound? College or here in your experience or was that kind of new and you just had to deal with it and learn as you go?

“We practice with sound every day, so it is something that we’re used to.”

NFL Films said that they caught you saying that you could beat one of your teammates in a footrace. Is that what you said and who were you talking to?

“Yeah, I was talking to [WR] A.J. [Jenkins].

[Falcons S] William Moore said this week about you, if you get a chance to blow him up, you’ve got to take advantage of that opportunity. The Falcons defense talking about putting a big hit on you. Are you aware of that comment and when you hear stuff that the opposition is saying, what kind of impact or any does it have on you?

“I don’t think that has any impact on me. Any defense, if they get a shot at a quarterback they’re going to take it, that’s just part of football.”

Good answersCK. Just stick to your routine. It is business. Stay focused as you have been all year. Play your game.

And remember to just have fun, it should be alright!!!

    Go 9ers!!!

  2. 49er42 says:

Kap is a very mature 25 year old. Gotta love him, he has his head on right.

    • dangle says:

Definitely has his head on straight and is full of humility and confident determination. The only thing out of this that gives away his youth (immaturity) is the fast food/nutrition bit. Professional athletes that are able to play at an elite level for long careers recognize that they have to treat their body’s like the high-performance machines that they are. He’s still young, so he may have ~3 years before eating junk food will speed up the age-related decline that naturally occurs. Hopefully he figures it out before then.

  3. claude balls says:

I eat a lot of Five Guys right now.

And thus Five Guys found its first celebrity spokesman.

  4. Razoreater says:

Kaepurnicus will slay the Falcons in their own lair and hoist the trophy to the triumphant cheers of the people.

  5. Folsom49er says:

    Saw the Press Conference Live….

And to me K-Gun looked like a man with a purpose. He looked ready for War!

I have to say I haven’t felt this confident about a 49er Championship Game since Joe & Co. took out the Rams in 89′

    GO 49ers!

  6. Houston 9er says:

Where is DS? I miss that person. I can’t believe after investing so much emotion in this team that they wouldn’t be here to enjoy the runup to such a big game.

    • Mr. Everything says:

      I know! Crazy, right?

      Can’t say I’m surprised.

      • Prime Time says:

Maybe it was guys like you E who tend to bring the threads down to an elementary level. You are known around these parts as a bit of a downer!

      • Mr. Everything says:

Say what Beefcake? You just dragged it down, just now, with this idiotic post. Do you get that?

Below, to set the record straight, and then I’ll be done with you.

        You are the notorious:
        1. #1 Smither
        2. Bay’s Kids Insulter
        3. Clem’s Wife’s Cancer Mocker
        4. Pathetic Begging Sap

      • Prime Time says:

        5. Make you guys sing on command!

      • Mr. Everything says:

        6. Cancer

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Prime

You strike me as a younger person who may not have had adequate parenting in your life, so I’m offering some words of wisdom for you to either take or leave. I couldn’t care less about you, so do as you will.

You’ve been relatively cool the last couple of weeks since Grant let you come back. But before that, you set a record for being pathetic, in every way. Be the man that you’ve been of late. Don’t revert to being the desperate, hateful arse that makes everyone around you wish your mom had never been stupid enough to conceive you. Stand up. Don’t insult people’s kids, don’t insult people’s wives’ cancer, and when you’re not wanted anymore, don’t beg and beg and beg to be let back into the group.

Since you’re here again, be here with some humility. You’re on the record saying some really dumb, really inappropriate things. Recognize that. Let your behavior reflect that.

      • Prime Time says:

If anything you just rambled on there were true it would be words of wisdom but unfortunately it’s not.
I never mocked lemons wife, the insults were directed at Bay, not children, and I am a Smith fan as I am anyone else that’s on the team and lastly, where I begged Grant is beyond me.
So take your righteous act and handful of lies and check yourself.

      • neal says:

      • Prime Time says:

Before you hit post comment, read it to yourself, read it out loud, have a loved one read it over, if it all looks and sounds good, push post comment. It’s really that simple.

    • MontanaMan16 says:

I know huh? I kinda miss reading DS stuff.

The only thing that worries me about this game is the media. The 9ers aint saying anything to give the Falcons “bulletin board” material but the media sure is. I bet the Falcons are really tired of hearing how bad there gonna get beaten. Everybody is writing it and that worries me.

      • EB Niner says:

        Ditto.

It’s not like the Falcons are the Chiefs or something…they won 13 games!

      • Mr. Everything says:

        Atlanta Falcons Games

        Raiders 20 – 23 Falcons
        Falcons 30 – 17 Eagles
        Cowboys 13 – 19 Falcons
        Falcons 27 – 31 Saints
        Cardinals 19 – 23 Falcons
        Falcons 24 – 23 Buccaneers
        Saints 13 – 23 Falcons
        Falcons 20 – 30 Panthers
        Giants 0 – 34 Falcons
        Falcons 31 – 18 Lions
        Buccaneers 22 – 17 Falcons
        Seahawks 28 – 30 Falcons

        49ers vs Falcons

      • Mr. Everything says:

        @ Kansas City Chiefs
        W 40 – 24
        Denver Broncos
        W27-21
        @ San Diego Chargers
        W 27 – 3
        Carolina Panthers
        W 30 – 28
        @ Washington Redskins
        W 24-17

      • MontanaMan16 says:

        @E
I looked at that a hundred times. This isn’t the regular season anymore. Atlanta, I don’t think has a shot in he!! to beat us but in the playoffs in this game, you raise your level of play.
They’re sitting there at home, the #1 seed and getting disrespected by just about everyone. I hate how that can motivate a team. That kinda worries me. That’s all I’m saying.

      • Prime Time says:

Montana the 49ers are hungry and will be the more physical team. The disappointment from last year has fueled them. They all keep talking about it so you know it’s at the fore front of their minds.
Come next week the media will be hyping up the Pats while the Niners will play the underdog for the SB!

      • MontanaMan16 says:

        @Prime
I understand all that and I think we beat them badly. Just saying it worries me that all the praise is going to SF and everyone is dissing on Atlanta.
Every time we get praise, we lay that 3rd game egg.

      • Prime Time says:

Montana Im nervous as well but more so in how the Falcons have been able to win those close games. Also will Brown, Culliver, and Rodgers be able to handle those big receivers.

      • TIM says:

        Prime:
If we win against Atlanta(and I think we should win by at least 2 scores…but that is why they actually play the games, because there are no guarantees),then I would think that we would be the favorites against the Pats or the Ravens,no doubt.
We already beat the Pats in Foxbourough and the SB is at a neutral site. Besides,we are the only team left that has an offense and defense and ST’s,every other team has much bigger holes to exploit.
