Moss: “I’m the greatest receiver to ever play this game.”

On Tuesday, January 29th, 2013, Randy Moss named himself the greatest receiver of all time.

MOSS: “Now that I’m older, I do think I’m the greatest receiver to ever do it. I don’t think numbers stand, because you can talk about this and this. I think that I’ve had…this year has been a down year for me statistically. The year before I retired was a down year and then Oakland was a down year. I don’t really live on numbers. I live on impact and what you’re able to do out on that field. I really do think that I’m the greatest receiver to ever play this game.”

According to Adam Schefter, this is Jerry Rice’s response to Moss: “Put my numbers up against his numbers.”

RICE’S NUMBERS

303 games; 1,549 catches; 22,895 receiving yards (14.8 yards per catch); 197 receiving TDs.

MOSS’ NUMBERS

218 games; 982 catches; 15,292 receiving yards (15.6 yards per catch); 156 receiving touchdowns.

Do you agree or disagree with Moss, and why?

Well what I do know is that Randy Moss is a fairly intelligent guy so if he says this then I’m going to go with he’s just having a little fun. He knows without looking that his stats don’t even hint at JR’s and he isn’t delusional so there’s no reason to get all riled up when Randy was just playing with the reporters.

  2. Dh3 says:

Rice is the GOAT period but moss is probably in second place…you can’t argue his impact on the league but Rice is easily the best to ever do it

  3. Rusty_in_OC says:

Randy, Randy, Randy. It’s been great having you on the team this year. Kudos on adding some real positives to the team. Now, take a Reality pill and calm down. You’ll BE in the NFL’s history books, but your role there will be to show how a talented diva can actually transform himself into a team player, which you’ve done, and done well. And you’ll always be Randy FREAKIN’ Moss. One of the best, no doubt.
As for being the Greatest, you can tell yourself that, and use whatever metrics you want to support your belief. But the numbers say you’re about 2/3 the player Jerry Rice was. In this case, I’d say the numbers are just about right.
Now, let that ego rest, and go win yourself a Super Bowl ring!

Let the Haters Hate. Everyone here knows my greatness. You might be able to make a case for other posters but Old Coach? Really? You might make a case for Stan, or Crabs, or even DS but Old Coach isn’t even in the same league with us. Many people have urged me to change my name to Houston 9er GOAT but I’ve resisted due to my humility and out because I’m still in the game.

Oh and by the way, I’ve been posting here alot longer than just this year. I was posting here when you were just a gleam in your Daddy’s eye. I was here when you actually had to sign in with a username and password to post. My contributions go WAY back. I’d rather you just say thank you and move on than trying to keep up with me.

You two are a pretty good team! It’s always such fun when something funny is INTENTIONALLY written here! Thanks, guys.

        Bravo.

very nice claude. You make a very good Costello to my Abbott. BUT I’d much rather you be Teller to my Penn. : )

Now THAT was funny. I don’t care who ya are. Good job!

    • MorningMeds says:

      Sorry, 23Jordan kicks your ass.

  5. ninermd says:

Well I hope you play like it this Sunday Mr Moss.

  6. Stan says:

He cant hold Lynn Swann’s jock strap.Or Rice. Or Bob Hayes. I mean I can list many over time..who had a a greater impact on their team.
He was pretty good. Had a fancy jump catch move. But Moss isn’t the greatest.

  7. FDM says:

Jerry made other players around him better. He made defenses defend the entire field. Moss was controversial and forced teams to only defend deep against him, not so much underneath or across the middle. He was not complete like Jerry. No one was and probably no one will ever be really because Jerry won, won in style, and was the classy player.

    • Rusty_in_OC says:

No one was and probably no one will ever be really because Jerry won, +1
      won in style, +1
and was the classy player. +1

      Nice post, FDM.

  8. Razoreater says:

Prove it Sunday against the Ravens.

  9. Adam707 says:

It’s hard to compare them as receivers mainly because they’re different. Moss is probably the most feared WR to ever play and the best deep ball WR ever. But Jerry is the man, can’t argue with stats and rings. But as a competitor and athlete I like Moss’ confidence.

  10. AES says:

Wrong platform to say this, wrong team to say it.

RM has been an upstanding teammate throughout the season, this type of comment can bring his status to a screeching stop.
    Not good Randy.

    • FDM says:

I hear what you are saying AES but I also like the confidence and this is just added motivation for him and to showcase to his teammates that he is willing to take on the pressure of the big stage.
Of course he is not the greatest WR of all time, but nothing wrong with some self confidence. The comment will be glorified but good on Randy for believing in himself.

  11. AES says:

Randy Moss is not even the best receiver on this team.
He will always find himself behind Jerry Rice.
All the self promotion will not change the career numbers.

  12. Mike in SF #2 says:

Randy Moss is the “most talented receiver” in NFL history and Jerry Rice himself has said it. But #80 was, is, and will always be the “Best” wide receiver in NFL history. The difference was JR’s work ethic. But JR and others didn’t come close to Moss’ god given athletic talent. He was a freak in his prime.

  13. Calistoga Red says:

Moss is certainly in the conversation, but Jerry to me is the hands down favorite.

That being said: would you want a player to say anything less? I like the confidence in himself. It’s up to all of us to determine who the best really is/was, but if he thinks it about himself, more power to him.

  14. NYniner says:

He’s 2 nd to Rice but… He didn’t have 2 hall of famers throwing to him his whole career , Moss put up some big numbers with average Qbs

  15. Crab15 says:

I’m glad Randy said it. I don’t think it was an intentional strategic move, but any shift of focus by Ravens secondary towards Moss will just open things up more for VD, MC and Delaney. Maybe Moss wanted to get in Ed Reed’s head? The good thing is, the Ravens will hear it and will be asked questions about it.
Moss sounded confident when he said it, I like confidence!

    My top 3 WR ever:

    1. Jerry Rice
    2. Randy Moss
    3. Cris Carter

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Ha! How about Belitnikoff? Short. Slow. Weak. Couldn’t jump or run after the catch. Didn’t block or go over the middle. But he was like Denny’s: Always Open.

      • Crab15 says:

Tuna – Biletnikoff had glue hands….Literally. Remember how much stickum he used? Lester the molester used tons of it too.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

The dude was some kind of phantom out there. You’d forget about him covering The Ghost and Branch, then he’d make 3 or 4 1st down catches in the 4th qtr.

  16. Rusty_in_OC says:

Completely Off Topic, but I thought I’d pass along a few predictions that a couple of writers here in Lower California made regarding this week and the game:
Jim Harbaugh spills a glass of water at the podium during a Press Conference, and blames it on his brother John.
Ray Lewis performs “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” and “I Feel Good” at a Bourbon Street nightclub, collapses on stage, and is led off by his minders.
Mike Singletary holds a coaching clinic: “How to Lose with Frank Gore, Patrick Willis and Vernon Davis”.
A fan tells a confused Randy Moss, “I loved watching your dad play for the Vikings!”
The NFL announces Beyonce is questionable for the halftime show (chapped lips).
Bill Parcels, Michael Strahan, Jerome Bettis, Eddie De Bartolo, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa are all voted into the NFL Hall of Fame.
Concerned that young NFL players neglected to train their livers to handle repeated tequilla shots, the NFL announces the “Drink 60″ program.
On the NFL Network’s 13 hour pre-game show, Philip Rivers demonstrates how professional quarterbacks go through the passing progressions and find the open free safety.

    It’s a GREAT week!

  17. RolloTomasi says:

The two seasons in Oakland hurt Moss’s overall numbers. He is a great, athletic receiver , but Rice is numero uno.

  18. undercenter says:

I have zero problem with Moss thinking that he is the best. The ego in these players is what makes them tick. Moss I hate to break the news to you, the fact that you are second to the Goat.

  19. sfarnell says:

Rice is king, no doubt. But, something to ponder: Rice played 303 games, Moss only 218, or about 2/3 of what Rice played. Moss’ stats, except for yards per reception which is more than Rice, show him to be about 2/3 of the way to Rice’s records. Had Moss been able to play 303 games he would have come a lot closer than he is now, although still not the GOAT.

  20. Crab15 says:

Whatever happened to Renaldo “Skeets” Nehemiah? That boy had more speed than a dope pusher.

  21. MorningMeds says:

OK, it’s now official, as good as he’s been, Randy Moss is a joke. He probably just cost himself the first-ballot.

  22. JMartinez says:

Hes the best down field threat ever.. but overall reciver Rice is superior

  23. Pete says:

    Really?…………..Crickets

  24. MWNiner says:

Luv ya Randy .. but ..
theres a reason Jerry was called ..
    “The San Francisco Treat” !

  25. dc9er says:

    Jerry Rice …..period!

  26. Neal says:

Kind of silly that Randy Moss said that, especially with all of our history with Jerry Rice.

  27. rocket says:

Best WR of all time? No, that is clearly Jerry Rice, but he does have a claim to being the most naturally gifted WR of all time. As good as JR was, he didn’t have the natural size and speed that Moss possesses. What JR had was work ethic and unmatched drive to succeed which is the main reason he put the WR records out of reach.

  28. EcoEnrico says:

The best W I D E receiver of all time? I’m not going to go there.

  29. wokingfool says:

    forgot one stat: SuperBowl

    Rice: 3
    Moss: 0

  30. Adam says:

I want to know who the eight are who voted Randy Moss as most dominant over Jerry Rice.

And… what are your arguments for that position?

  31. old coach says:

Adam I voted for J.R. but i believe its the wording of the question that got Moss some votes. Whats the difference between the most dominant WR and the best WR?

    • BigP says:

J.R. was the best WR and player. He maximized his abilities, made those around him better, broke every single receiving record, won Super Bowls and is in the HOF. Moss was a superior athlete that was able to dominate on talent alone. He didn’t maximize his abilities and he didn’t work as hard as he could have. He didn’t make people better and he didn’t win Super Bowls. Despite that, he has phenomenal career numbers. He was the most dominant player when he felt like playing, which wasn’t all of the time. You can’t teach desire.

  32. Dee Phiant says:

Randy is right! and Jerry ain’t playing on Sunday!!!
And I want ALL the rest of the nines to think and play like they are the best in the world too, because if they aren’t, they WILL get they butts kicked!!!!!

  33. BigP says:

Randy is probably the most freakish athlete I have ever seen, but Jerry Rice is the best player of all time. Not just best receiver, but best player. He made the players around him better and he maximized his own talents. Moss did neither of those. He was tolerated because of his ability. He has a long history of acting immature and not giving full effort. Moss is telling people that he is the greatest receiver ever, but Rice’s peers voted him the greatest player of all time. “I play when I want to play.” That’s great, Randy. There is a reason you have played for five franchises. The other reality about Moss is that he had to play this year in order to be second all time in TD receptions for WR’s. He trailed T.O. by two TD’s heading into this year and now has a one TD lead over him, now only 51 TD’s behind Rice! Part of being great is maximizing your abilities and talents, something Moss never did. He will never be the greatest WR because he never had the desire to be the greatest.

  34. KezarMike says:

People get very excited by these pronouncements, Doesn’t really matter that much. Moss has had a great career, but OBVIOUSLY is not as great as Rice was. Nor is Moss anywhere near the complete player (blocking and catching every type of pass and pattern) that Jerry was. I wish the 49ers would have used Moss more this year, but his signing has turned out to be a very good thing. Now, wouldn’t it be spectacular if he has a great game in the Super Bowl and turns out to be one of the stars? Heck, Kaep has to try at least two long one to Moss, don’t you think? Maybe first play on offense?
