This is what Brent Jones said about the 49ers’ Super Bowl defeat Monday on KNBR.
Q: What was the toughest part of that game to swallow for you?
BRENT JONES: The toughest part about it was I thought they were completely unprepared to play the first half. I was really, really disappointed, especially how they had come out against Atlanta in the first half. You can talk all week about how it’s just another game – they looked like deer in the headlights. Not communicating. Broken coverages. Dumb penalty. Turnover. It was just a horrible first half.
And so I thought with the extended halftimes, you make some adjustments. When they ran the kickoff back, I thought you’ve got to be kidding me.
All of that being said, I felt like the power outage was the greatest blessing we could have ever gotten. If that didn’t happen, I think we would have just been tsunamied and lose by four touchdowns. But that, for whatever reason, calmed their nerves. The Ravens, I don’t know why, but it seemed like it bothered them more. John Harbaugh was going off. Even though we didn’t come out and get a first down, something clicked. Maybe guys realized time was running out. And they started looking like the 49ers that we’re used to seeing for a good part of this season.
When they had that momentum, I thought this is their game and they’re going to win this. Even when the defense gave up a field goal I said OK, our offense is going to march down the field and score. When we got down there I thought OK, matter of time.
The second down pass – OK, I’ll let that one go.
The one-yard flare route on third down was stupid.
And I just do not like either winning the Super Bowl or losing the Super Bowl on a fade route. I think the fade route is a 1-in-3 at best. That’s not the call you’re looking for in that situation. That’s a Nervous-Nelly call. I didn’t like it.
All of that being said, Frank Gore was gashing those guys. We’ve got the best offensive line in the National Football League. If you want to give it Frank Gore four times on the five yard line and they stop us I say well done, you guys win.
And to wait until seven minutes left in the third quarter to score your first touchdown – come on. That’s just…come on.
And then the first play of the Super Bowl. That’s inexcusable to be quite honest. It’s not just another game. You can say that during the week, but you’ve got to respect the big stage. Until the blackout, we looked completely baffled, which isn’t a good look.
Take that, and then say OK, we’ve got some talent on this team. We’ve got some young guys that really can make some things happen out there. They battled back. It would have been the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history.
And we’re on the cusp, we’re right there. We got down there to the five and we just panicked.

Thank God. I’m vindicated! I’m always right! I’m awesome!
Of course you are right, you are Mr. Everything!
Yea – Mr everything dumb.
The proper sports term for the last series, CHOKE!
Yup. Yup. And yup. There are so many could’ve would’ve should’ve.
What were they doing for two weeks?
Here’s the silver lining though. I’ve watched CK in the playoffs pretty closely. He started all three games pretty rough. Makes sense, he’s never been there before. The thing is though after a quarter or whatever he’s got it figured out, he’s calmed down and firing on all eight. So he’s had the ability to sort of even out and then the thing isn’t too big for him.
What I’m thinking is: now he knows. He’s been there and done that. There shouldn’t be a game on a big stage next season.
That goes double for the rest of the guys – those that don’t have the ten game start excuse. They know what to expect now.
And I just do not like either winning the Super Bowl or losing the Super Bowl on a fade route. I think the fade route is a 1-in-3 at best. That’s not the call you’re looking for in that situation.
———————————————–
OK i wouldn’t have cared at all if it had actually won us the SB but still this is all I’ve been saying since it happened. You don’t try a fade route on your last play of the SB.
No team in the NFL is EVER gonna just run the ball three or four times from the five with the game on the line. I don’t care how good your line is or your back is, ain’t gonna happen. No team will risk the other team’s defense making a spirited d-line stand with the game on the line. Maybe if the ball was on the 2, a team would do a run. But almost any coach will feel there are more ways to score if a QB is passing there, especially a running QB. Would have taken real brass balls for ANY NFL coach to try to win by running the ball at that time. (and not saying it wouldn’t have worked, but … waddaya gonna do? In the immortal words of that most quoted coach, Mr. Jim Mora himself – woulda, coulda, shoulda. Folks, you just move on, the 1984 team came back more determined than ever after a bitter defeat in the ’83 NFC game that Walsh claimed was decided on a bad call – would have been the greatest playoff comeback up to that time, 49ers came roaring back from 21 down to tie the game, and were in fact a better team than the Skins – could happen again next season).
bingo, KezarMike. the 2nd down play that was cancelled by the timeout was run by Kaep, then they came back and tried to change it up.
would i have liked to see another run, in retrospect? yes. but hindsight is 20-20. Brent nailed it when he said we played a horrible first half. we play a horrible first half, i find it hard to gripe about losing the game. No other Niner SB winner ever played a half like that. we made our own bed.
The aborted second down play was the killer. I’ve watched that at leat 5 times and SF has the numbers on that run. I can’t remember exactly but I think it was 4 blockers with only 3 defenders out there trying to flank the play. Just kills me that if they had communicated the play to CK 2 seconds earlier….
You’re right, no team would run it four times because any team worth they weight gets the touchdown in two plays. Teams that can get the job done need four plays or have to resort to panicked pass plays. I have a good feeling there was a run called but the QB changed the play wanting to find his new best friend Crabtree for a TD.
Against Atlanta the 49ers were in that same position and ran the ball to close out the game winning drive. Why wasn’t it good enough in the Super Bowl with Haloti Ngata, the Ravens best defensive lineman, out the game injured. Even if you don’t run Gore you can run your 6’5 physical specimen of a QB. The options were there and either the coach or the QB chose the wrong one.
Only thing though …. mentioning what happened in ’83 an ’84 – no doubt in my mind that the NFL is tougher all around and more evenly matched now than it was then. Yeah, the Bears and Giants came on huge in 85 and 86, but then became less great quickly. We had the best QB by far. Now, there are lots of real dangerous teams in the league and much more top QBs as well. Just look at our own division. Don’t think the Hawks and Rams are gonna be even tougher next year? Don’t think Dallas and NY will be better and both with dangerous QBs? I could go on and on, and the Steelers, Broncos, Saints, Falcons, Skins, Colts, Pats and Ravens all have top QBs and SB dreams as well as us. So it’s tougher now than it was then and even in the early 90s when the 49ers really had only one competitor in the league for a while (Dallas).
I love eveything you say, but the cowboys are a rotting pig, jones will screw up the rest. Rams and Seahawks are no joke! Rams also have a ton of high picks!
I didn’t want to reply any of this and now I can’t shut up! Anyone agree that our defense just hasn’t been the same since Justin Smith got hurt?
No doubt, Mike. He’s definitely the spark plug. Take it out and the defense sputters.
I think Aldon was playing hurt as well, if I remember the injury report correctly from before the game. Shoulder was banged up.
It’s OK. They just need to lick their wounds, regroup and play next season. At least it was an exciting ride. Can’t complain about that, really.
Which brings me to this years draft…..we need another pass rusher…even with Carlos Rodgers back there, another pass rusher thats effective, makes a huge difference….there are some holes that need repair, in spite of this seasons SB appearance..
Rogers sucks huge donkey balls
Datone Jones looks very promising.
This lost just sucks and hearing Jones makes it more painful, that we were not prepared and great teams don’t go down, 28 to 6 in the freakin Super Bowl.
49ers fans will forever remember the last series of this game as defining the result but the reality is the game was lost it in the first half and first 11 seconds of the 2nd.
Busted coverages, inability to wrap up Flacco (and then letting him complete big passes after escaping the rush to keep drives alive), and some arm grabbing of the RBs all contributed to a woeful first half by the defense. On offense, an illegal formation to start the game wiped out a big play and led to a punt (Ravens got short field and then drove down to score), the fumble by LMJ took points off the board, the INT was an awful pass, and Kap was shaken by it and played poorly the next series. Then letting the opening kick off in the 2nd half go for a score was diabolical.
49ers lost the game in the first half. That they were then able to bring the game back to the point they almost won was stunning, but in all honesty just showed what the 49ers should have been capable of all game.
In saying that, the play calling in the last series (and the 3rd down play at the end of the first half) was bad. No getting away from it, 49ers did have a chance to go ahead and blew it.
Great teams don’t go down 28-6. But teams that can come back from 28-6 have the potential to be great.
In the past 2 years, the Niners should how far they’ve come in a short amount of time, but how much growing up they have to do, from the genius coaching staff (JH,GR,VF), to the prodigy QB. In the past 2 games for all the marbles they did not put the players in a position to win the game. At some point, they have to learn how to win. Saying they have the will and emotion and the capability is not enough.
They have to do it. Clearly the talent is here. It was here before the current staff got here. It went from SB or bust to SB and SB repeat or bust.
The one person that DOES have to ask these questions, what happened, why weren’t we prepared, etc etc etc is Harbaugh and he has to ask this of his staff. They need to come up with answers, so that they grow as a staff and have procedures in place so that they are better next time coming into a playoff game. As it happened in the Falcons game too, it indicates that somethin is wrong here.
This happened last year too! Against the Giants. They just didn’t get it done. You’d think they learn their lesson.
Coaches are supposed to put players in position to make plays and in two years they failed.
I think Harbaugh is on a five year deal. What will happen in year 3 is anyone’s guess…
The fact that they won the NFCC and were in the SuperBowl means that it isn’t the same situation and in fact did learn their lessons. If they lose in the SB next year then come back and talk about repeating mistakes and not learning from them but the two games in discussion couldn’t be more different.
What was the reason they lost in the game last year? They were horrible in the red zone and they were really bad on 3rd down.
Same thing this year in the biggest game.
The team has yet to learn how to really close.
Last year it was goofy plays, like the fumbles. And how everyone said that if the were to play the Pats they would have won.
This year they wanted to make a statement against the Giants to say they were the better team and got killed.
They were definitely over-confident in the SB and got behind 28-6. Don’t blame the refs. They were the better team but they lost.
Wonder what happened to Aldon. He looked pretty ordinary on Sunday, trying uncertainly to glide around the left tackle, failing to set the edge on runs. Hardly saw any real pass rush burst. Brooks, despite his inexcusable offside penalties, played pretty well — and I get the impression that he’s playing with more injuries than Aldon.
“Wonder what happened to Aldon.”
Justin Smith got hurt and neither were playing at 100%.
He got caught on a hard count, mood …
Yeah.. I know.. but it happens
I still think all the refs reside somewhere in Baltimore
can you run that by us again, Coach Harbaw:
question: WHO HAS IT BETTER THAN WE DO?
answer: John Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens.
I blame the loss of Jim Dumbaurg.
He is a buffoon for not running the ball with Gore or not using the pistol offense the last 3 plays.
I am so pissed right now, I am trying hard not to think about the game.
the only reason CK has been succesful is because of the pistol.
He is a special passer but the kid can’t breakdown an offense.
I do believe in him, I believe with him and the pistol we will always be explosive which will always give us a chance to win.
and not to forget those CK timeouts did end up costing us.
DS your post is not consistent with oneniners typical blogs! By the way ck does not have to break down the “Offense” and his play so far just after ten games was good enough to get us to the Super Bowl! Go Niners
you can focus on getting to the SB, we niner fans rather win it.
And yes if he could breakdown a defense gaining 5 yards to win the biggest game won’t be an issue.
but then again what do you know loof?…..you already assumed this was DS and think its better being a loser of the biggest game instead of our QB getting better at reading defenses.
FYI the ravens played the same defense near the goaline almost everytime. A smart experienced QB would know better not to throw a fade route on 4th down.
Pure of example of smart QB with experience was Alex against the saints last year, he threw a pass to VD that was perfect and precise in between two defenders.
Those are the kind of plays CK needs to be good at……..the nice fastball passes are good in the middle of the field, endzone plays requires more brain work.
Oh it is you oneniner…! Welcome back Alex junkie. I take a losing Super Bowl anytime over a decade of crapy coaching, offense and QB play. Go Colin and the Niners
with the way our corners especially cully played in the SB, my dream of drafting Tyrann Mathieu the “Honey Badger” might come true.
He’s 5’9” with off- field”issues” which led to him getting ejected from his team.So yes he will be available-but do we take a chance?
Later pick, special teams yes. Cb, no!! To small to play db.
On panicking once we got to the 5: I am disappointed in our fabulous coach Jim Harbaugh sorry to say. When you give into the emotions on the sidelines like that, your mind is no longer in control. The insane face with the protruding fist; reminiscent of a scene from “Alien” is proof that Jim was no longer in his right mind. He was not in position to make any clever calls, big bro totally has his number!
I agree.
Those emotions were after the 4 th down play .wtf are you talking about?
Panicked is one way to describe it. But that is too strong a word for me, I believe that we just did not call the right plays at that time and the blown TO limited us as well.
Because we’ve never lost in the SB, it’s going to take a while for the sting of this loss to go away but such is life in football.
Maybe after another week the bad taste will subside and I’ll get my football ‘jones’ on watching the NFL Combines.
Speaking about the NFL Combine, we are in need of a shut-down DB.
I don’t believe that we can trust a draft choice with that responsibility.
I still say we package a very ‘sweet’ deal to the Jets for D.Revis.
Alex Smith, Kendall Hunter, our 1st rd. pick.
Culliver became a liability over the playoffs and the off.cords were almost attacking him at will.
If Revis healthy, then trade AS but not all if that. Kh is our future rb
The reason I included KHunt in the package deal is because I don’t see him getting as many carries next season with the emergence of LMJ.
At this point even an 80% D.Revis will be an upgrade over what we have now.
I don’t see this package as a panic move given nthe fact that AS already has one foot out the door and as I mentioned, KHunt may not get that many carries.
The only trepidation would be possibly adding the our #1 pick to the mix, but I would pull the trigger if that is what it would take to get D.Revis.
AES, I think you keep both KH with LMJ. They have different styles although both small in stature. They would compliment each other well.
excuse me, *they will keep both because they compliment each other.*
I don’t know. That move smacks of panic.
It’s one thing to say we need it but the reality is are there any “shut down” corners even in the draft. The term usually refers to an elite coverage type corner back and given that the league currently only has maybe half a dozen or so true shut down corners that makes it harder to just go find one in the draft and if there is actually one he’ll be long gone even before we find someone willing let us trade up.
If we find a shut down corner he’ll be a diamond that no one knew about including ourselves probably and he’ll come from the 5th or 6th round.
No way do you trade 3 guys of that caliber for a DB coming off knee surgery with only 1 year left on his contract.
with a penchant for fleecing his club for everything he can get or will sit out otherwise.
+1
I don’ t think you give up on CC. If the DL was pressuring JF more, this would not have been as bad as it looked on Sunday. Clearly JS is not the same since his injury and AldS didn’t play well and may be dinged. CC just needs to go back to DB basics and not overplay on every down. He has the size and the speed to cover most any WR in the league.
The 9ers have enough picks to move up and grab 4-5 really good players in the draft. This is not a quantity year for them when they need top quality on the DL (2), DB, WR, TE.
Doesn’t it bother you just a bit that it appears our entire pass rush is based upon the health of one player? If that really is the case then our defense is a bit of a sham and we’re in trouble.
Yes CFC. AldS was getting all of the credit when JS was clearing out two and sometimes three OL for him to get his sacks. That’s why I believe they need two DL in the draft. One stout guy and one quicker guy to shore up the DL.
If our pass rush is based upon the health of a single DE then we need way more then just a couple DL. We need LB’s that can get to the QB without an elite DE in front of them.
When teams no longer have or can find the right players up front they tend to switch to the 4-3 and put guys like Aldon up on the line…which is where he played in college anyway.
CFC, AB is the guy that some really like and think he is outstanding. I won’t go that far. They could sub one of the DL for a LB if that is what they wish to do. The could also keep PH since he is coming off of injury and use AldS mainly for pass rush duties.
*they*
Hofer,
Why do you say they need a TE?
I was reading a comment on another blog by a fan that thought the problem with the pass-rush in the playoffs was as much an issue of fatigue after a long regular season than just because of Justin’s injury. That because the 49ers didn’t rotate the front seven much, the starters just took too many snaps that led to fatigue and the nagging injuries going into the playoffs.
After reading that I have to agree somewhat. 49ers were thin at OLB with Haggans backing up Smith and Brooks – and on the DL only RJF was a reliable fill-in. After that, the talent level really drops which forces the team to keep the starters on the field. The team seems to trust Tomsula with being able to coach-up UDFA’s – and yes, sometimes you can find a gem, but most of the time you aren’t going to get a high-quality player. I know they’re good for the salary cap, but there is also the notion of you get what you pay for, too. When you look at how this ended with a practice squad player having to be activated because of lack of depth, I can only hope that the 49ers address this in the draft and FA.
Jack, regarding another TE, simply to have another target in the RZ. A “hands guy” that is tall and rangy but knows how to create space.
Thanks for the clarification Hofer. Maybe a nice big WR could also fit that role.
Jack, weren’t we in agreement and clamoring for a big WR in the 1st round about this time last year? TB needs to make some good choices including packaging picks to get top quality.
Hofer,
Yep, I wanted a big TE but instead we got a guy who barely touched the field all year.
This is a big offseason for Baalke. They are up against it with the cap, and need to have a productive draft to keep this thing moving forward.
I meant clamoring for a *big receiver* (CF would have sufficed), but yup got to agree Jack.
“I still say we package a very ‘sweet’ deal to the Jets for D.Revis.
Alex Smith, Kendall Hunter, our 1st rd. pick.” — AES
AES: Don’t quit your day job.
(lol) I don’t plan to anytime soon DR.
But can you at least give me an honest rebuttal as to why this isn’t a workable deal?
The jets are 26 mil over the cap. Sanchez is gonna be a 17 mil hit this season. They are screwed and can’t take on another qb. Not to mention paying revis the world only to have him complain after next season that he wants another raise.
Lost my in Canada there. Lousy ipad.
Looks like Hands of Brick Sr. wants his son to leave the team: http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/02/05/ted-ginns-father-wants-him-out-of-san-francisco/#comment-2318781
I say don’t let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya, oh and would you send in Devin Hester on your way out please?
Since it seems like we all need to be cheered up, I offer the following. It’s a series of sketches (drawn by an animator from Pixar) depicting confrontations between the mascots of NFL teams that played each other this season. Some of them are very good.
http://kissingsuzykolber.uproxx.com/2013/02/a-pixar-animator-did-sketches-about-the-2012-nfl-season-and-they-are-awesome.html#page/1
Grant, there were a few times this year after Kaep came on board that I remember Harbaugh calling a time out with more then just a moment or two before the delay of game penalty. I didn’t feel like during those moments that he was trying to save a penalty as much as it seemed like Harbaugh knew what Colin had changed the play to and decided to override and not let the play happen.
Did you notice this and if so any chance of getting Harbaugh to admit that he overrided(sp) Colins decision making?
CFC,
That’s exactly what we will never know. Did JH override any of GR’s playcalling? Did CK choose the right play from the two he received? With FG in the game on that last series after the 1st down run to LMJ, was it CK who was forcing the throws to MC? It sure didn’t seem like a JH/GR playcall at the 5 yd line!
Not to argue but to simply clarify I really wasn’t pointing to just the past game. I’ve noticed it in previous games as well.
Agreed. It could also be the reason there have been delay of game penalties in games during the season. The play is called and someone overrides either the pass play or both the pass/run plays. (??)!
Just read Maiocco’s latest article. He has some insight/breakdown of the 4 infamous plays.
People are quick to jump on the play calling, but I don’t know.
It seems that the story that is emerging is that it was Kaepernick that screwed up…missed open receiver(s), audibled out of the run(s), etc.
I wonder about the wisdom of a guy with almost half a century exposure to coaching and a 15 year NFL playing career leaving play calls in that situation up to a QB in his 10th game as the starter. I would think that with first and goal from the 7, the only choice he would have given Kaep would be Gore off tackle right or Gore off tackle left — at least until 3rd down.
And yes, I know that Gore wasn’t in on first down — he was supposedly exhausted from his 33 yard run. Really? With the Superbowl on the line?
OK, so you want to give Gore a breather. LMJ is a good runner, but between the tackles runs had not worked in the middle of the field let alone at the 7. Run LMJ off tackle.
Are the 49ers better off as a 4-3 team? If the teams pass rush is hinged soley on the health of our DE then clearly something is wrong. It’s easier to find good players for a 4-3 then it is for a 3-4.
I’m not saying that this is my suggestion but I think it warrants discussion given how fragile our pass defense appears to be under the defenses current set up.
if this works, i had to try using this older login because i was repeatedly getting an 500 internal server error message
I’m not hating the idea of Aldon and Justin lining up next to each other with Willis Bowman and Brooks behind them. We’d need a true 4-3 DE for the other side but we have plenty of tackles to use.
Don’t kill me for it, just throwing the idea out there.
Watching the highlights, I mean lowlights of the game, I’m still pissed that we let Flacco out of our grasp and let him throw balloons downfield that should have been knocked down or intercepted.
With all the great athletes in college and the pros why are coaches still putting 5′ 9″-5′ 11″ cornerbacks out there to cover tall receivers?
Shoudn’t the trend nowadays with the passing game being so prevelant in football t0 put tall athletic corners out there to match up with these receivers?
You bring back a very bad memory, Bill. I was wondering during the game how Flacco was floating those passes out there when he was running for his life, they hung in the air for about a year and a half, and STILL his guys come up with the catch. DAMN!
THAT’S what made me think we’ve got some serious DB problems.
“All of that being said, Frank Gore was gashing those guys. We’ve got the best offensive line in the National Football League. If you want to give it Frank Gore four times on the five yard line and they stop us I say well done, you guys win.”
This is what I agree with most but why didn’t they just bring in the jumbo package with either Dixon or Gore running behind the FB. It would have helped them to control the clock and doubt it would have taken more than two tries to get it in and win the game.
If they did need 4 downs they would have probably been on the 1 yard line and could have called time out with a couple seconds left on the clock and punched it in.
Passing was just stupid. To me it really did look like they just panicked
Its not that often I hear somebody put their thumb on it that well. Jones got it right.
John out coached his brother..again.
Beofre the game- bad mo-jo.
Smith wants to leave.
Moss is the greatest.
Culliver gets took by Artie Lange.
Sounds like the 49ers heads were all over the place.

Hofer:
“Yes CFC. AldS was getting all of the credit when JS was clearing out two and sometimes three OL for him to get his sacks. That’s why I believe they need two DL in the draft. One stout guy and one quicker guy to shore up the DL.”
Yes and no Hofe. Aldon did prosper with a healthy J.Smith in the lineup, but Aldon but JS could not get credit for the times Aldon completely bull-rushed his man back to the QB for a sack.
I don’t know why that specific manuever was missing from Aldon’ arsenal over the last 4-5 games. ???
I think it was Jack who, a few weeks back, pointed out that no other LB before Aldon Smith worked so well with Justin Smith in the pass rush. Thus, the productivity of the pass rush likely depends on both being healthy, not just Justin Smith being healthy. Since the NE game, neither has been healthy, and that was devastating to the pass rush.
I’m still stunned by this game. How could we come out so flat after the Falcon game. It seems to me that the team was overwhelmed and not ready to play. my thoughts of the goal line situation was How to score while leaving little time for them to drive back.
Greg Roman left a lot to be desired out there. Why was LaMichael James benched after his fumble? He should of been given another opportunity considering the outside runs have been killing them the whole game. Why weren’t there any pitch plays or screenplays call the whole game? We all know that you have to run to the outside against that defense. Yet, how many of those runs were called? when gore finally got an outside run he went for 33 yards. On that fourth quarter goal line, there were no outside running place called except for that rushing play for Colin. where were are tight ends? A bunch formation? Split back lineup? this isn’t the first time I’ve been critical of Greg Roman. In fact, I don’t think he’s the best play caller.
On defense, Vic fangio left a lot to be desired also. With the knowledge that both Smiths were hurt and unable to perform at high levels, why weren’t there more blitzes called? Why wasn’t there some kind of zone blitz added as a wrinkle to the defense? Why weren’t there any corner blitz’s called during the game? It seems to me that we we’re being out coached the whole game.
So in this offseason, I’d like to see some real changes to this roster and philosophies.
As far as the rosters concerned, we need to add depth to several positions. Number 1, defensive line. I’d like to see a big Beluga defensive tackle to occupy space and free up our middle linebackers. I’d like to see a stud defensive end to learn from Justin Smith.I also like to see a couple of additions on defense. Maybe Jason Seymour and derrell Revis.those 2 players would be significant additions to our team.
In the draft I also like to see couple wide receivers and 1 big cornerback and a real free safety. I’m done with Dante Whitner. His coverage skills are horrible and he’s too small to line up with a tight end. He’s been getting burned all year against mediocre tight ends.I also like to see us draft a big Center that can anchor this line for years to come. That boy from Alabama comes to mind.
This team has been so close 2 years in a row and it pains me not to win especially when I know we are the better team. Jim Harbaugh needs to take hey hard look at himself in the mirror and wonder what he could have done better. And I don’t mean anything in regards to his tirade and questionable emotional behavior in front of the TV. I was hoping Greg Roman what a turn the corner and realized what kind of quarterback he has to play with. He choked on those last play calls. He should have been much better that is no excuse.
Let’s all lick our wounds and support each other recovering from this extraordinary painful experience of losing our first Super Bowl. What can I say? We’re just not used to losing on that stage in that fashion especially with this coaching staff. Keep your heads up realize that the future is bright and we have the best quarterback in the league and a young offence offline that is just starting to come together and only have room to grow. We lost Kyle Williams, Kendall Hunter, Mario Manning ham, and essentially Justin Smith yet we still made it to the Superbowl overcame horrendous start and came 5 yards away from number 6. Go Niners!!!
Please let me know of any players you would find fitting for our team. I look forward to the draft and Trent working his magic again. One love niner faithful!! Keep your head up.
Hof-you are QB guy- what’s your take on Matt Scott from AZ …might be a good mid(ish )rd pickup for our 3rd guy. Guys I’m I’m looking at as targets for the draft:Datone Jones- DL;Brandon Williams- NT; really like Logan Ryan -CB;Dustin Hopkins-K and the list is growing!
Top, sorry just saw this ( I had to work some today lol). The 9ers have accumulated quite a few picks for this draft. They should package their #1 and another pick (perhaps #3) to move up and get J Jones (DE/OLB) or Sharrif Floyd (DT). The move up pick package should follow the pick value (of course).
I haven’t looked closely at the QBs yet, but given the week QB draft this year, MScott may go higher than expected especially given that he can run and pass similar to the new QB skillset a la RG3, CK, CN, etc. albeit not as skilled.
*weak*
I think they did panic. When you are that close and have a qb with sprinter speed, how many end arounds do you think it would take to score? Especially with a qb who can throw on the run? Does anyone remember the USC-Texas national championship and what Vince Young was able to accomplish on their final drive?
I’m numb. Going to be hard to get over this one. For the last couple of years we had a defense that lacked an offense to support it. Now we have an offense that lacks defensive support.
IMO we lost this Superbowl because we had a CB who made a very insensitive comment about gay people early in the week. The 49ers response was swift and it was heavy. Culliver lacked the maturity to deal with the aftermath. I believe he showed that he was mentally not prepared for this game because of it. Looking back if I were the 49ers I would have issued a statement that Cullivers comments would be dealt with after the Superbowl.
My other issue is with Roman. With Roman you have to take the good with the bad. Our redzone play calling has always been atrocious. The last 4 plays were no different. How we didn’t run Gore three times and let Colin fake one and try to run it in himself is beyond me. Now we have all offseason to think about it……
Can’t argue with much here, except I didn’t see that offense (that lacks defensive support–you’re right) show up at all in the first half. So essentially, NOBODY showed up till the second half. I think THAT’S why we lost the game. Culliver’s problems didn’t help, for sure, but it’s still a TEAM game, and the whole team owns this stinker.
What do they say, turnovers and penalties right? From the very first play we lost a 15 yard play.
First defensive drive we stop them on 3rd down only to have Brooks be off sides. TD on the next play.
Kaepernick INT, La Michael fumble in the red zone.
I guess what I am saying is it wasn’t so much that the offense didn’t show up. They moved the ball well. It came down to turnovers and penalties. And the penalty that was never called : )
Meanwhile, there was a story out there today that Kaepernick says he’s not taking any time off and is going to start training next week. He’s heading to Atlanta and he plans to take some receivers with him to prepare for next season.
That’s a great competitor for you! Love to hear stories like that.
He needs film study, not physical training. Time to develop the brain.
there’s nothing wrong with his brain. If you want to train, let him train. Let him get used to his receivers. Obviously, this loss still hurt a lot. Some athletes need training to get away from pain and suffering. it’s their personal sanctuary. He’s taking a leadership role.
The point is he needs to read defense better. Yes he was outstanding but he could be even better. His physical skills weren’t the problem in the 11 games he played.
Hofer,
hate to sound like a second grader but that statement you made is retarded.
Learn to read defenses better? I saw one bad pass all game and it was intercepted.
What he has is an OC that lacks the ability to put a game plan together that matches the weapons that he has.
Exactly Hof, CK needs to study the NFL game more. He needs to study every single formation he faced this year and the ones he didnt. He also needs to learn the time management and game management aspects of the game.
Physically he is there and then some. Now its the cerebral part of the game he needs to develop.
Bay, it’s understandable considering you are still “numb”! Once you get your head about you, you will know I am correct.
FDM, sorry *we are correct*
Bay at the end of the day CK is still learning the NFL game. You act like he made no mistakes on Sunday. He did, just like alot of the coaches and players around him did. To put it on Roman and the playcalling is easy. In hindsight, CK could have audibled out of any of those plays, maybe he did. But at the end of the day, he is the one that makes the final decision.
Did you ever hear what Eric Davis said about the playcalling regarding their championship years and what Tim Brown said about Calalhan? He said, if the leaders on the team did not like the playcalls being sent in, they would change it. If it worked great, if it didnt, they would get chewed out. The players on those teams took ownership. After CK studies the game and becomes more experienced, he will be an even better QB.
That’s fair. Except that isn’t what he’s going to Atlanta for. Sounds like he wants to stay in shape and throw the ball. Unless a coach is going with him to study the years worth of film.
How much fitter can the kid get? He is a freak. He needs to train with either Geep or Roman and study film past and present. Technically he also needs to improve.
Also heard that AJ is going to be joining him in Alanta…
Love his competitive fire. But what he truly needs is an offensive play calling system that gets plays in to him on time. He also needs an OC that has an identity and knows how to intelligently attack inside the red zone.
What don’t you understand? He gets a running play and a passing play to pick by reading the defense. That has been protocol since JH has been running the team – not just one play. We don’t know if GR, JH, or CK were the ones that forced three passing plays at the end.
Hof, maybe his running play was a dive play into the D line. Roman called a bad game. Where were the screens, tosses and pitches? Something we really hadn’t seen much. Where were the wrinkles? We were in 3rd and long a lot, not to mention the falcons game.
Ck will get experience by playing, not watching.

Agreed Hofe. CK has not been shaken by any circumstance on the field.
He is a fierce competitor and I especially love how he is always on the sidelines talking to his O-line and skill players.
After 10 games, defenses are baffled by his ability to pass and run. D-Cords have the difficult task of having to prepare for him unlike any QB in the league at this point.
Reading defenses comes with more experience. P.Manning was far from reading defenses early in his career as well. P.Manning could conceively be the first QB/O-Cord now with his ability to read defensive schemes.
I don’t believe that there is one true 49ers fan who would trade CK for any QB in the league right now, even after the SB loss.
CK did not lose the game on Sunday because he was unable to read defenses, nor did he lose because the stage was somehow to big for him.
We lost this game because we could not execute on plays as well as not being able to create any rhythm in the first half.
My initial reaction after the game was complete anger at the ref’s, but in retrospect, we dug ourselves to deep a hole in the first half that hurt us in the end.
Thanks for a bright spot, Fourth & A. I’d say Kaep could work on his “touch”, and take some of the heat off those short passes. Mainly, though, it’s really good to see him taking the same kind of leadership role Alex did during the lockout. Good stuff.
What happened to chucking the receivers in the first 5 yards. All I see are guys backpeddling and receivers getting to the spots they want to on the field. We made it easy for Flacco most of the time. Its pretty easy to hit a guy “after” he has caught the ball and gotten yet another first down. I would like to see the corners throw the timing the receivers have with the QB by just being more physical.
*timing off*
Here’s how the refs hosed the 49ers. In the 1st half. LaMichael James fumble killed our momentum. Kappy turned into Alex Smith and did not pull the trigger. Moss had gator arms on the int. Now on to the final 4 plays. On 4th down that was holding or pass interference period. But on 3rd down the refs should have thrown the flag on a helmet to helmet hit on Jimmy Smith on Crabtree. That penalty is called 100 out of 100 times. Would of resulted in a 1st and goal at the 2 1/2 yd line Period. The refs swallowed there whistle and was told not to throw any flags. Should have mentioned it to HC Jim H.
Ha Ha Derek, I was thinking that Jerome Boger [head ref] ‘forgot’ to tell Jim, but told John… “Hey Mr. Harbaugh the league has informed us to keep our flags in our pocket as best as we can” wink wink.
