49ers announce roster cuts

The 49ers just announced they have cut the following 21 players:

T Carter Bykowski, WR Austin Collie, CB Marcus Cooper, TE MarQueis Gray, WR Chad Hall, RB Jewel Hampton, WR Lavelle Hawkins, LB Joe Holland, WR Chuck Jacobs, LS Brian Jennings, LB Travis Johnson, CB Darryl Morris, G Patrick Omameh, WR Kassim Osgood, NT Mike Purcell, S Trenton Robinson, FB Jason Schepler, S Michael Thomas, G Wayne Tribue, QB Seneca Wallace and T Kenny Wiggins.

That means B.J. Daniels made the team, and so did Garrett Celek, Anthony Dixon, Will Tukuafu, Nate Stupar and Tony Jerod-Eddie.

Here is the 49ers’ 53-man roster:

Colin Kaepernick, Colt McCoy, B.J. Daniels
Anquan Boldin, Marlon Moore, Jon Baldwin, Kyle Williams, Quinton Patton
Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter, LaMichael James, Anthony Dixon, Bruce Miller
Vernon Davis, Vance McDonald, Garrett Celek
Joe Staley, Mike Iupati, Jonathan Goodwin, Alex Boone, Anthony Davis, Daniel Kilgore, Adam Snyder, Joe Looney
Aldon Smith, Justin Smith, Ian Williams, Ray McDonald, Glenn Dorsey, Will Tukuafu, Tony Jerod-Eddie, Cam Johnson
Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman, Michael Wilhoite, Nate Stupar, Nick Moody
Ahmad Brooks, Corey Lemonier, Dan Skuta
Carlos Rogers, Tarell Brown, Nnamdi Asomugha, Tramaine Brock, Perrish Cox
Eric Reid, Donte Whitner, Craig Dahl, C.J. Spillman, Ray Ventrone
Phil Dawson, Andy Lee, Kevin McDermott

  1. Keeping 10 LBs seems a tad over the top. Definitely a strong ST focus keeping Ventrone over the younger guys, as well as both Stupar and Moody.

    1. I would have picked Hawkins over Stupar. Hawkins could be used to return kicks. Stupar probably would have been available at any point.

      1. Me? Neither, LOL Harbs? We’ll see.
I was watching Ventrone Thursday, he’s an emotional leader on the field and could be Seely’s player/coach.

    1. Can Marecic be signed, then cut and added to the practice squad? I think they need to suit him up and see him in action at the NFL level rather than just handing him a job.

      1. @Wilson: good idea, but unfortunately, under league rules, Marecic has no PS eligibility. He’s accrued a full season and has been on the active roster for too many games.

      2. I don’t see what Marecic brings to the team that the Niners don’t already have. He adds nothing to the team, as a matter of fact, I think that releasing any of the current players to make room for Marecic might alter the chemistry of the team, particularly the RB group.

      3. There was a report from Schefter late in the day that Marecic was in for a workout. Perhaps the reports of him signing were a bit premature.

  2. Well, no suprises to me, we now have depth at our rush positions. Olb,and the 2 ends. Our rush will be stronger n better. With the added depth we can blitz more often and our boys will be rested. Our run d will still be superior. Its go time guys n girls. #Lets Get It

    1. Not to mention at least 4 of the weaker players will be released when our team gets stronger with the return of dobbs, wright, mann, and hopefully crabs

  3. There’s always the disappointing residue feelings of seeing some of my long-shot players getting cut.

I was rooting for Collie, Schepler, Jennings, Hawkins, and MarQueis to make the team.
I know that it’s a numbers game and that the player(s) you hope make the team don’t always do so.

I am very happy to see BJ Daniels make the final roster. His making the roster buffers much of the disappoint. I thought that Stupar played well enough to earn a spot. I believe his strength will be on ST’s.

Awaiting to see how the PS shakes out.
    My top candidates (imo):
    MarQueis
    Cooper
    Schepler
    Morris
    Jacobs
    Robinson
    Bykowski
    Hampton (if eligible).

      1. i think i read somewhere that Okoye got “an injury settlement”. I dont exactly know what that means, but i think he is a free-agent. Im pretty sure you cant cut someone who is hurt, so you must pay the salary due or some formula to figure the compensation. Then said person becomes a free agent. So i believe Okoye is a free agent as of right now. Witch would mean the PS is a possibility.

      2. Schepler actually did more than Okoye.

Schep can play a few positions, Okoye’ can’t play one.

Okoye is a longshot at ever being a football player let alone playing in the NFL.

    1. If the PS eligible guys they’ve released don’t get picked up I can see it shaking out something like that. They’d probably want a DL on there too though – Okoye or Purcell. When Dobbs is available in Wk 2, Jerod-Eddie may shift back to the PS.

  4. Interesting to see our undrafted WRs from 2012 didn’t make any rosters this year. Showing once again that Baalke and company might know what they’re doing (Palmer, Tyms, Owusu).

  5. I got two wrong on my roster prediction. Jennings and Robinson.

Still surprised they are gambling on an udfa and letting Jennings go over $500,000. They are trying to free up every possible $.

    1. Good job Rocket. I missed 2 also. Got offense right but missed on defense, didn’t realize there was a suspended list to put Dobbs on, and had Robinson instead of Stupar

      1. You too Jack.

Stupar played well but I’m guessing he’s going to be pushed off the roster by marijec?

Good looking roster regardless. Will be interesting to see which dlineman goes when Dobbs comes back in week two.

      1. That’s right, you have Aldon Smith with the D-Line group.

You “4-3 Under” guys seem to love laying in the weeds, ready to pounce on us poor unsuspecting 3-4 people. You should form a gang like the “Martin Van Burens.”

      2. “3-4 you say? Can’t you see the tackle is slightly offset, shooting the gap? Give me your wallet… fool.”

      3. On a serious note, I’m hoping this alignment will be the difference maker in Glenn Dorsey’s play relative to what he did in KC.

  6. Now the hard part… I’m hoping MarQueis Gray, Jewel Hampton, Lawrence Okoye and Lavelle Hawkins aren’t scooped up during 24hr waivers.

Not saying they are the best, but they are my favorites on the cut list.

      1. Mscl I believe Baldwin is only safe until Manningham comes back both of their salaries count against the cap and once MM is healthy they will have to create a roster spot which I believe will be Baldwins spot unless of course he shocks us all and catches the ball.

      2. The one thing I’ll give Baldwin, he did show the size and strength to get open. Obviously, if he can’t catch the ball, he’ll eventually be cut. But Vance McDonald dropped a ton of balls in college, at the combine, and in early Niners practices. He seems to have improved in that area lately. Maybe our coaching staff can get Baldwin back to where he needs to be. Every draft scouting report I’ve read on Baldwin considered his hands as a plus.

      3. VD couldnt catch either early in his career. I will be rooting for Baldwin, he has the ideal size. I was rooting for LH to make it also. I loved his speed. IMO, i think they should have kept 6 WR’s.

  7. Hope I don’t get blasted for asking this, but anyone collect NFL cards? I wanted to get into the hobby and collect 49ers cards and a few other players I respect. But I am looking at it as a hobby and investment. Would like to start by buying a box of 2012 cards, but want to avoid purchasing the cards not worth much. I’m assuming the ones at Target and Walmart are garbage. Help appreciated.

    1. i used to collect sports cards in the late ’80′s and early ’90′s. The market became saturated, watered down, and therefore prices dropped. I started again a couple years ago, buying old rookie cards (like Rice and Montana) for a fraction of what i had bought and sold them for years earlier. As for newer cards i have NO ADVICE!
If you have a little extra cash and your looking for a hobby/investment that you do not need an immediate return on…..E Bay is a great place to shop for the classics! I have been buying Willie Mays rookies in addition to Montan, Rice , Lott etc. Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, all the all time greats (some of the older cards are also antiques based on age. Good fun investments.
Now days, with the old cards, its about professional Grades ( like stamps and coins). They authenticate them and give them a grade 1-10. PSA is the best grading company. With a down economy, items like this go for a good price, its a buyers market. Auctions on E-bay will have the best deals as opposed to “buy now at this price”

  8. I’m struggling with the Hawkins release … help me understand why they couldn’t keep him as a #6 WR and ST. He brought fire to the roster which seemed very coachable after the initial antics.

    1. I would have gone down to 2 TE by releasing Celek and keeping Hawkins. I wasn’t impressed with Celek in the preseason and MacDonald looks like the up and coming TE after Davis.

    2. Wow. So your telling me 5 years in the leauge and ZERO production isn’t telling enough? He had fun against 3rd and 4th stringers. He is where he belongs on thewaiver wire.

      1. He had a lot of injurys and a no real QB in TEN.! His one healthy season he had almost 50 catches. We should have kept 6 WR and 9 LB! not 10 lb and 5 WR, IMHO.

      2. Valid point, but I also believe that a player’s potential can only be fully realized when they find the right combination of quality coaching and quality of team mates. I feel Hawkins could have excelled in our system.

  9. I dunno .. I’m pretty happy with who shook out in the
    not-so-final talley

I was rootin’ for BJ … and he made it …
(tho … I’m wonderin’ how long it will take before
    he beats out Colt)

And I was also rootin’ for Wilhoit ..
    (I liked his “mic’d – up” vid at 49ers.com)

So-o-o .. while I’m usually wrong when it comes to
my favs making the final 53 …

I was elated by the revelation ..
that I got two right this year !
