49ers @ Panthers divisional playoff live blog: Second quarter

CHARLOTTE — This is the live blog for the second quarter of the 49ers’ divisional playoff game against the Panthers. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

10:43 Will Tukuafu will not return. He has a knee injury.

10:44 The Panthers are going for it on fourht-and-goal from the 1.

10:45 Newton sneaks up the middle and gets stopped short of the goal line. First down 49ers at their 1 yard line.

10:47 On third-and-8 from the 3, Kaepernick throws a pass right to Quintin Mikell but he drops it. That would have been a pick-six. Andy Lee punts it 52 yards from the end zone. Ginn returns it 24 yards to the 49ers’ 31.

10:49 First play, Newton throws deep to Steve Smith, who is covered-on-one by Tarell Brown. Brown has good coverage but never turns his head to find the ball. Smith catches the pass in the end zone. 7-6 Panthers.

10:53 James takes a knee in the end zone. Touchback.

10:56 The 49ers go four-and-out after a 20-yard completion to Boldin on the first play. On third-and-10 from the 40, Frank Gore is flagged for a facemask penalty. But the Panthers decline it because Kaepernick was pressured and threw the ball away. Andy Lee punts it 43 yards and Ginn returns it 3 yards to the Panthers’ 20.

11:01 The Panthers call timeout to avoid a Delay penalty. They face first-and-10 at their 30.

11:11 The 49ers stop the Panthers on third-and-goal from the 1 again. This time, the Panthers don’t go for it. Gano makes the 24-yard field goal attempt. 10-6 Panthers. Newton completed a 35-yard pass down the middle of the field to Greg Olsen on that drive. Newton also converted a third-and-4 with an 11-yard scramble.

11:15 James takes a knee in the end zone for another touchback. 3:41 left in the first half.

11:20 After the two-minute warning, the 49ers face first-and-10 at the Panthers’ 49.

11:35 Two plays after a defensive pass interference penalty in the end zone, Kaepernick rolls right and hits Vernon Davis in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. 13-10 49ers with 5 seconds left in the first half. Boldin caught 3 passes for 42 yards on that drive.

11:38 Ginn returns the kickoff to the Panthers’ 40 and the first half ends.

11:39 The Panthers averaged 7.5 yards per play in the first half. The 49ers averaged 3.9

11:40 Despite throwing an interception, Newton’s passer rating is 112.5. Kaepernick’s rating is 75.2.
