49ers v. Broncos preseason live blog: First quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the first quarter of the 49ers’ exhibition game against the Denver Broncos. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

6:06 The Broncos win the toss and defer. The 49ers receive the ball first. Perrish Cox will return it.

6:07 It’s a short kick. Anthony Dixon scoops it off the grass and returns it to the 24.

6:15 The 49ers drive 50 yards in 13 plays and Phil Dawson makes a 42-yard field goal to put the 49ers up 3-0. LaMichael James started off the drive running around the left side for five yards, and then up the middle for five and then six. Toward the end of the drive, he tried to run around the right side and got tackled for a loss of one. Colin Kaepernick scrambled to convert a third-and-two, but the drive stalled when Anthony Davis committed a false start penalty on second and 10 at the Broncos’ 20 yard line.

6:23 The Broncos go seven-and-out. On third and eight, Aldon Smith pushed LT Ryan Clady into the pocket, and Smith hit Manning as he threw it. The pass fell incomplete. The 49ers start their second offensive drive at their three yard line. Colt McCoy is in the game.

6:27 The 49ers go three and out. Dixon gains zero yards up the middle on first down, three yards up the middle on second down, and LaMichael James fumbled the ball on third down, but he recovered. The Broncos start their next offensive drive at their 47 yard line. Brock Osweiler takes Manning’s place at QB.

6:34 Andre Caldwell caught a 12-yard pass in front of Tramaine Brock on the first play of the drive, but the 49ers shut down the Broncos’ offense after that. Nnamdi Asomugha made a big hit on third and 12 to end the drive. The 49ers start their next offensive drive at their 20.

6:37 The 49ers’ second-string offensive line is in the game. On the first play of the drive, James runs a sweep around the left side and gains just two yards. That play needs Joe Staley to be effective.
