49ers Week 12 grades: Kaepernick

NEW ORLEANS – The 49ers just beat the Saints 31-21. Here is the grade for Colin Kaepernick.

Colin Kaepernick: A-. I mark him down because he threw an interception and was flagged for two delays. But his performance was extraordinary. He had pressure all game and he never got sacked once. If Alex Smith had played, he would have been sacked five times.

Kaepernick made unbelievable throws from the pocket and from outside the pocket when he was adlibbing – the best one to Crabtree which was called back because of an Anthony Davis holding penalty. The offense converted almost 50 percent of their third downs (6 of 13). Kaepernick converted a third-and-11 with a 25-yard laser to Delanie Walker. Kaepernick made five-to-ten plays that Alex Smith absolutely cannot make.

The score was tied 14-14 at halftime. The 49ers got the ball first in the second half, and Kaepernick led the offense on a six-play, 80-yard TD drive in an instant. That was a critical moment in the game.

Kaepernick proved that he is the present and the future of the franchise. The 49ers have a much better chance of winning the Super Bowl this season with him than they do with Smith. The 49ers now have the ability to blow teams out consistently. You could make the argument that Harbaugh should have made Kaepernick the starter earlier in the season.
