It’s Day 6 of 49ers training camp for rookies (and the second day of practices) and the 49ers’ top draft pick is still not under contract. And word is that the 49ers and receiver Michael Crabtree are getting no closer in their contract talks.
Crabtree’s agent, Eugene Parker, has not backed down on his contract demands, and the 49ers are not caving in, according to a league source. Although the specifics on what Parker is demanding is unknown, NFL sources have said the agent wants Crabtree rewarded a contract worthy of the top-five picks in the draft.
That is not likely to happen any time soon. And it’s not likely the 49ers are going offer Crabtree a Darrius Heyward-Bey-type contract any time soon, either. The Raiders paid the top receiver chosen, Heyward-Bey, a reported five-year, $38.25 million contract that includes $23.5 million guaranteed. He was picked three spots ahead of Crabtree.
Eight of the top 12 picks in the draft remain unsigned, including pass-rusher Aaron Maybin, whom the Bills selected at No. 11. Maybin has the longest contract stalemate going, as the Bills opened camp on July 25.
