Day 1: A walk to remember

It’s an eight-block walk from my Indianapolis hotel to Lucas Oil Stadium, site of the NFL scouting combine. I’ll be telling my grandchildren about the time I walked to work in the snow (though I was not barefoot).

It is 18 degrees, but it “feels like” 3 degrees, according to weather.com. That was fine. But the conclusion of my walk was almost a conclusion of a different kind. While crossing the street (legally, I might add) to the stadium, I noticed a car coming the other direction getting ready to make a right-hand turn – directly into me. And the car was not slowing down.

Showing the kind of agility that would do me well in the three-cone drill, I deftly backpedaled to narrowly avoid getting planted on the asphalt. For the walk back to the hotel, I plan on hiring blind-side protection.

Speaking of which . . . the offensive linemen will be among the first position groups to greet the media today.

Who knows, perhaps one of these fellas will be going to the 49ers at No. 10. There could be as many as four offensive tackles chosen in the first 10 spots in the draft. The candidates are Virginia‘s Eugene Monroe, Alabama’s Andre Smith, Baylor’s Jason Smith and Mississippi‘s Michael Oher.

Today is the deadline for NFL teams to slap prospective free agents with the franchise tag. The 49ers will not use the tag. So far, here is the list of franchise players: LB Karlos Dansby (Cardinals), P Michael Koenen (Falcons), LB Terrell Suggs (Ravens), K Shayne Graham (Bengals), QB Matt Cassel (Patriots), RB Brandon Jacobs (Giants), RB Darren Sproles (Chargers), S O.J. Atogwe (Rams), WR Antonio Bryant (Buccaneers) and TE Bo Scaife (Titans).
