Don’t expect late arrival of impact players

It’s late June, so don’t expect the 49ers to add some quality, team-changing player at a position of need. After all, an overwhelming percentage of the really good players already are on teams.

Question: As more veteran pass rushers get cut, what’s the chance of adding depth at DE, DT or OLB? (Matt A.)

Answer: If somebody is not currently on a team – or somebody is going to get cut in the near future – there is a reason. When you look at the 49ers’ current roster, what you see is what you get.

I would be very surprised if the 49ers added somebody to the roster who is capable of making an impact. Those kinds of players simply are not available after the draft.

Wilson wants to know about Baltimore‘s Terrell Suggs and Carolina‘s Julius Peppers. I’d expect to see both of them return to their teams of last season, though Peppers might not be happy about it. It would take a lot for the 49ers to get either of those veteran players. The 49ers have a pretty decent veteran nucleus, and they seem intent on building their roster through the draft.

Also, someone who had read Peter King’s article on Derrick Brooks wondered why the 49ers weren’t getting involved. Although Brooks was a star in the league for a long time, he is 36 and he’s not what the 49ers need. In 14 seasons, Brooks recorded 13.5 sacks.

No, it sure looks to me as if the 49ers have what they have with defensive ends Justin Smith, Isaac Sopoaga, Kentwan Balmer, Demetric Evans, Ray McDonald and Ricky Jean-Francois, and at nose tackle with Aubrayo Franklin, Sopoaga and Balmer, and at outside linebacker with Parys Haralson, Manny Lawson, Marques Harris, Jay Moore and Ahmad Brooks.
