Free agency 2013 live blog: Day 2

This is the live blog for Day 2 of free agency. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from my living room.

9:03 Here’s a quiz contest to start the day. Do you think the 49ers will sign someone today, and if so, whom? Do you think one of the 49ers’ free agents will sign elsewhere today? If so, whom?

Here’s my best guess. Ricky Jean Francois will sign with the Eagles and the Niners will sign former Giants’ kicker Lawrence Tynes.

9:34 The Chiefs just signed a deep threat for Alex Smith – wide receiver Donnie Avery. Whether Smith can take advantage of the deep threat is another story.

9:42 Josh Norris’ newest mock draft at NFL.com has the 49ers drafting Jesse Williams at No.31, and the Jets drafting Xavier Rhodes at No.9

10:02 Tyrann Mathieu tells TMZ he wants to be a 49er.

10:12 Alabama DT Jesse Williams, who weights 320 pounds, just ran a 4.9 40-yard dash at his Pro Day.

10:26 Matt Barrows just tweeted Dorsey is meeting with defensive line coach Jim Tomsula right now, and Charles Woodson also is in the 49ers’ facility.

10:37 The Lions signed Reggie Bush to a four-year contract. NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah loves the move: “In 2011, the Lions started off the season 5-0 with Jahvid Best in the lineup. Reggie Bush will fill that role.”

10:45 The Cardinals just signed Rashard Mendenhall. They’re bending over backwards to build Steelers-West in Arizona.

11:25 CB Antoine Cason is meeting with the Cardinals. They need a No.2 cornerback, and Cason is a good one.

11:33 The Lions just signed safety Glover Quin, according to Schefter.

11:50 The Broncos are trying to sign Wes Welker. They’re in serious talks.

12:06 The Bucs just signed Dashon Goldson to a five-year contract. It’s worth $41.25 million, and $22 million is guaranteed.

12:07 Something to consider – with the addition of Boldin and the loss of Walker, what will be the 49ers’ most dangerous offensive personnel grouping next season? The last two seasons, it was 22 personnel – two tight ends and two running backs. It was a power running formation that also could beat you deep with the pass because there were two fast tight ends.

Next season, the 49ers’ best grouping could be 11 personnel – one tight end, one running back and three wide receivers – because Boldin is best when he lines up in the slot. With him at the X and Crabtree at the Z in 21 personnel – two running backs and one tight end – the only deep threat on the field would be Vernon Davis, so safeties could play closer to the line of scrimmage, which would hurt the 49ers’ running game.

12:15 With the 31st and 34th pick, the 49ers probably could draft FS Eric Reid and SS Jonathan Cyprien if they wanted to.

12:20 The 49ers have signed Glenn Dorsey, according to Schefter. I guess Dorsey bought into the idea of playing nose tackle.

12:52 The Dolphins are close to signing TE Dustin Keller. He’s taking a physical.

4:41 The Broncos signed Wes Welker to a two-year, $12 million deal, so the Patriots signed Danny Amendola to a five-year $31 million contract.

6:49 Former Lions’ free safety had a visit with the Rams earlier today. He just left St. Louis and is on the way to visit the 49ers, according to Adam Schefter. Maybe that indicates the 49ers passed on Charles Woodson.

7:05 Draft talk: Miami Herald Columnist Armando Salguero thinks the Dolphins will draft CB Xavier Rhodes at pick No.12. If this is true, the 49ers probably would have to trade with the Chargers for pick No.11 to get Rhodes, if he’s the guy Trent Baalke wants.
