Homecoming for Billick

Former 49ers PR assistant and current Fox analyst Brian Billick was at practice today, as the 49ers had their last significant work day before Sunday’s game against the Seahawks.

This is a significant weekend for Billick, who gave Mike Singletary his first coaching job. Former 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo will be honored as the first inductee into the newly created 49ers Hall of Fame.

Billick remembers receiving a check for $25,000 from DeBartolo to help him move into his first house in San Mateo in 1979 while he served in an entry-level position with the 49ers. “You remember those acts of kindness,” he said.

Billick gave Singletary his first coaching job with the Ravens in 2003. During the 2000 season, Singletary spoke to the Ravens as they were getting compared to the great Bears defense of 1985. (The Ravens went on to win the Super Bowl that season.)

Later when Billick heard that Singletary interviewed for the Baylor head-coaching job, he called Singletary to see if he would be interested in joining his staff.

Singletary’s first game after taking over as head coach last year came against the Seahawks. After that game, Singletary gave his now-famous “I want winners!” address to the media. When asked what he thought after watching that for the first time, Billick said, “That’ll make one helluva beer commercial.”

He said that speech embodied Singletary’s passion for the game.

“Players and fans need to see passion,” Billick said. “We (football coaches) don’t have home plate to kick dirt on.”

Adam Snyder will start Sunday at right tackle – and play most of the game. But veteran Tony Pashos will see some action, Singletary said. Pashos and Alex Smith were the only two active players who did not play in the 49ers’ season opener last week against the Cardinals.

Out: LB Ahmad Brooks (knee).

Doubtful: WR Brandon Jones (shoulder) – Physically, he’s fine. But his work this week in practice showed that he’s not ready to resume playing after being out of action since Aug. 6.

Probable: G David Baas (biceps), DT Aubrayo Franklin (shin), CB Marcus Hudson (knee), G Chilo Rachal (neck), DE Justin Smith (elbow), DE Isaac Sopoaga (shoulder).

Cardinals S Adrian Wilson fined $10,000 by the NFL for Week 1 hit to head on “defenseless” 49ers TE Vernon Davis.

Here’s a post about Michael Crabtree and the 49ers from Andrew Brandt of National Football Post that is a must-read. He has negotiated contracts with Eugene Parker and has a great perspective on what it’s going to take to get a deal done.

On a sad note, here’s a link to an article in the Stockton Record about the ending of one young 49ers fan’s lifelong battle.
