Jarrett Brown’s bad, bad day

A football player’s first NFL practice is a day he’ll never forget. That’s not necessarily a good thing for Jarrett Brown.

The undrafted rookie QB from West Virginia had a pretty dreadful afternoon session. It started with a fumbled snap from “center,” who wasn’t really a center at all but an assistant coach, in a 7-on-7 drill. On the very next play, he threw a wounded duck down the center of the field.

And it didn’t get much better than that for Brown. He completed a few passes, but he also missed a receiver and was nearly intercepted by Taylor Mays; and threw short while Kyle Williams ran deep; and overthrew Scott Long; and lost the ball twice more during team period, though defensive players weren’t allowed to hit.

Too bad, because we spoke to Brown yesterday and he was very likable as he talked about knowing 49ers quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson since his junior year, and about being unprepared for the (then-)chilly Bay Area weather.

The good news for Brown is that this was just one practice. Careers are never made or broken this quickly, and he will get plenty more chances. You wonder if the same is true for former Stanford QB Tavita Pritchard. Brown may have struggled, but at least he got to make some throws. Pritchard was a spectator during all 7-on-7 and team drills.
