Mock this! Third round starts early

It’s time for my second mock draft. Today, we’re going to look at the third round, which begins bright and early at 7 a.m.

The 49ers enter the day with six picks. Among the positions they would like to hit: OLB, RB, DB, OL, DL . . and, maybe, QB.

 

The 49ers’ remaining picks are . . .

 

Round 3, No. 10, No. 74 overall

Round 5, No. 10, No. 146 overall

Round 5, No. 35, No. 171 overall

Round 6, No. 11, No. 184 overall

Round 7, No. 10, No. 219 overall

Round 7, No. 35, No. 244 overall

 

When asked about his strategy for Sunday, 49ers GM Scot McCloughan said: “There has to be the value of the pick there. If we have to trade again, we’ll trade again. There’s no reason why we wouldn’t trade up so we can go and try to get someone that’s sliding our way. But we want to have good football players and the value will be there. I feel good about it and there’s going to be good players taken tomorrow that end up being good players in the NFL and we have to make sure to identify the right ones and take them.”

By the way, in my Round 1 mock, I had nine direct hits – a personal low. But 28 of my first-round picks were selected in the first round. The only ones I missed were Alex Mack (I took him out of my first round at the last minute), Donald Brown, Eric Wood and Kenny Britt.

On Feb. 21 when I was at the NFL scouting combine, news broke of Michael Crabtree’s stress fracture. That morning, I wrote a blog entry, “Might Crabtree fall to 49ers at No. 10?” Wish I had remembered that Friday when I constructed my mock draft. (By the way, I wrote that day that Crabtree was the only receiver the 49ers would take at No. 10. Two months later, I do believe that was indeed the case.)
