Offensive line prospects 49ers could target

The 49ers need at least one offensive lineman, maybe two.

They need a guard, because starting right guard Mike Person is a free agent this year. And they also may need an offensive tackle, because starting left tackle Joe Staley will be a free agent in 2020.

The 49ers wouldn’t have needed an offensive tackle had they kept Trent Brown. But general manager John Lynch traded Brown and a fifth-round pick to the New England Patriots for a third-round pick last year, a pick Lynch spent on a cornerback — Tarvarius Moore.

Now, the 49ers have just one offensive tackle under contract through 2020 — right tackle Mike MgGlinchey. Lynch would be wise to find a second offensive tackle for the future, plus a starting guard for the present.

This is the second installment of a four-part series breaking down the prospects Lynch may watch most carefully at the upcoming NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, which starts Tuesday. This installment focuses on offensive linemen.

  1. I haven’t seen much on Elgton Jenkins, I’ll need to check him out.

Dillard could make sense as a long term replacement for Staley, but my understanding is he isn’t very powerful and struggles to make much movement as a run blocker. Might not make for a good OG in the short term.

    1. None of the 49ers offensive linemen are powerful and all of them struggle to make movement in the run game. Dillard would fit right in.

      1. Not even bro. We do run a zone blocking scheme. It requires athleticism. Not straight ahead pwr.

      2. Grant…do you think Garnett will finally show his skills when healthy this season? He is a first-round draft pick but has hardly played. He got into camp late his first year and always seemed behind due to injuries. If he could surprise us it would change the mix of talents we might need. Also, is there any obvious “must have” free agent on the OT?

  2. Garrett Bradbury probably won’t be there day 2, but I do like Erik “The Real” McCoy in the 3rd round, Dru Samia and Ben Powers. It’s early but it seems to me the top of round 2 is the sweet spot for WR’s, and the top of round 3 is the sweet spot for IOL….

  3. I like Chris Lindstrom. He did well in the Senior Bowl practices.
    .
I hope they do not re-sign Person.

    1. I like Lindstrom also. We r very thin at OG. We way need to resign the P. He did improve as the season progressed.

      1. You guys think like Grant that Lindstrom is going to be there late 2nd or early 3rd round? I don’t. If he does, he’d present an outstanding value. I feel Bradbury and Lindstrom are the two most likely IOL that could become day 1 targets.

        1. Razor, my mock had him possibly falling to the second round, so I had him at 36.
          .
CBS had him ranked at 51, and Draftek had him ranked at 47.

  4. Grant: Senior Bowl performance; Chris Lindstrom – OG – Boston College
    * I MAKE MAKE MY CASE: A good NFL combine may move Lindstrom into the end of the first round, but more likely, the beginning of the 2nd round where the 9ers should draft him with draft pick #36.
    * Grant: “Lindstrom started at right guard — the position he’s most comfortable playing. He most likely will get drafted near the end of the second round or the beginning of the third round, when the 49ers will make their third pick.” I think you’re wrong Grant….and here’s why!
*What We Learned About BC’s 2019 NFL Draft Class From the Senior Bowl: Chris Lindstrom: For Lindstrom, the Senior Bowl was a way to burst onto the national scene. All week, Lindstrom received high praise from reporters and scouts, as he went toe-to-toe with some of the draft’s best defensive linemen in drills, showcasing his quick feet and calculated hand placement in the process. as the game progressed, Lindstrom began to dominate in the trenches. Exploding off the line of scrimmage, the veteran guard—who started his final 47 games in a BC uniform—carved up space for his running backs, down after down. The North’s first drive of the fourth quarter dispelled any doubts that Lindstrom can’t start for an NFL team next fall. Starting at his own 25-yard line, the versatile guard laid down three massive blocks in a row—eye candy for any NFL offensive line coach.
    * POST SENIOR BOWL TOP 10 GUARDS:
    1- Chris Lindstrom BC
    2- Cody Ford Oklahoma
    3- Michael Deiter Wisconsin
    4- Bobby Evans Oklahoma
    5- Max Scharping N. Illinois
    6- Dru Samia Oklahoma
    7- Benzschawel Wisconsin
    8- Garrett Brumfield LSU
    9- Ryan Bates Penn St
    10- Jovan Patterson Ole Miss

  5. Guess my biggest questions are- Can Joshua Garnett display some of his Outland Trophy skillsets, and stay healthy enough to win the starting job, or should they draft his replacement?
    .
If they do not re-sign Person, will they be forced to draft a guard, or is Garnett and Najee Toran adequate?
    .
Also, how is Laken Tomlinson’s rehabilitation going ? Hope there are no setbacks.
    .
Finally, should they draft a Center, guard or tackle first?

    1. Empty stadiums, JV play, failed athletes, almost missed payrolls.
      .
I will pass. No wonder Kaep did not want to play in that bush league.
      .
Some claim Kaep is a sell out, but the only think selling out is his Nike Jersey.

    1. I wonder if they’ll force him to sell in similar fashion that DeBartolo was. Smells of the Godfather when they set up the senator, without the blood. Perhaps one of the other owners grew weary of Kraft’s dominance, and helped facilitate exposure of his known weakness….

      1. Perhaps Denise (and John) make a bid for the Pats, selling the 9ers to anyone the local fan base would approve of.

        1. Grant could pool his resources, have a garage sale, and make a run at becoming an owner. Seb could join in, selling his tractor and subdividing his 2.5 acre estate.

          1. Jack Hammer could take his 5 Burning Questions copyright and auction it off to the highest bidder.

      2. I wonder if they’ll force him to sell in similar fashion that DeBartolo was.

Most likely Razor. This potentially could also finally put a clock on Brady and Belichick’s time in the NFL.

      3. I doubt he’ll have to sell. The NFL still thinks of DeBartolo’s error as more egregious. Kraft will probably see something closer to Jim Irsay, which would mean a $500,000 fine and 6 game suspension.

      4. Doubt grandpa Kraft spends a night in jail, but if he does, I’m sure his cadre of attorneys are counseling him on how to arrange solitary confinement and avoid unpleasant shower experiences.

        1. You may be right, but the Chines women were being coerced and became exploited as virtual sex slaves, so the whole operation is suspect, including the Johns.
          .
Since it is a misdemeanor, at most he will be fined for conduct detrimental to the league.

    2. As someone who believes that prostitution should be fully decriminalized, I’ll be disappointed if Kraft is forced to sell the Pats. Kraft may have watched his buddy in the White House get away with such behavior and worse, and thought he could do that too….

    3. Sounds like it is about to get worse if reports about Kraft not being the biggest name involved are true.

      1. Sounds like it is about to get worse if reports about Kraft not being the biggest name involved are true.

Anthony Wiener recently got released from jail. Maybe he just couldn’t wait a moment longer.

  6. Tariq Ahmad, 49er Scout:

The San Francisco 49ers coaches and scouts are back from Mobile, Alabama following the 2019 Senior Bowl.
Tariq Ahmad–Ahmad specializes in the defensive line

    Kentavius Street

Street tore his ACL in a private workout for the New York Giants leading up to the 2018 NFL Draft.

“Kentavius — kinda what I was saying before, the background of my job is so important. Anybody could watch Kentavius play or watch him work out and say, this guy’s a special talent — explosive, powerful, fast. He’s as thick and dense as anyone that you’ve ever seen.

”But, the background — going to school, talking with the trainers, talking with his strength coach — they all loved him, every player loved him. So it was an easy decision because that guy’s going to do everything he can to get right, to get back to where he was before. There’ll be no days off. I was talking to another player just yesterday that I interviewed, who said, ‘Yep, Kentavius is training with me right now. He’s at so-and-so workout facility training, doesn’t take a day off.’

    Jullian Taylor
“Totally different story with Jullian. Actually, from my days at Rutgers, I knew Jullian. So we had an extensive rapport between the two of us. Right away, when he was a junior and I was doing that summer work that I was talking about, he only played a few games because he had a knee injury that year, his junior year. But I made sure I watched those games, the game against Penn State is the one that stands out in my mind. And he was a really good football player, with minimal playing experience.

“So the following year, I had a microscope on him because I saw stuff that I really, really liked early on. And I thought he performed at a high level. I thought he had traits. I don’t know if the instincts were always there because of the limited background, but I really, really liked what was inside of his body, and from knowing him, from his days down in South Jersey, I thought that he was going to be a really talented player and a really quality person who adds value to the locker room.”

  7. O-Line–Thanks Grant. Free agency also cover this weakness.

WR–No WR has caught double-digit touchdowns since Owens in 2002 (16 seasons)
No WR has crossed the 1,200 yard barrier since Owens in 2002 (16 seasons)

    1. Seb

I think that there are several candidates (including McCoy) who can play all three positions, and Garnett HAS TO show up this year, or get ground up for dog-food….I think that we already have several quality backups, but we need some better 1’s and 2’s in the interior Oline. Coaching…

  8. New name surfaces for 49ers in TD Wire mock draft

The NFL combine is set to start February 26, which is also about the time mock drafts start changing dramatically. Doug Farrar at Touchdown Wire introduced a new name to the mix for the 49ers in his first mock draft. He still has the 49ers going with a defensive player on the front seven, but he has Houston defensive lineman Ed Oliver climbing back up in the draft and landing in San Francisco.

    Oliver Highlights:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8wtF9zN4-M

    1. TomD,
I will be very interested in seeing Olivers 40 time. If its 4.75 or faster he would be a great trade back pick. Maybe between # 5 and #10.

      1. Coach, could you imagine the D-Line with Josh Allen, Oliver, Kentavius Street, Jullian Taylor, Deforest Buckner, Ronald Blair and Shelon Day+whatever Free Agents they acquire?

    2. The way he moves I am surprised we haven’t heard more about his potential to line up at DE. Unlike Solomon, he has amazing stop start and lateral movement skills. But I think part of it might be his height/length. He is pretty short. He’s a guy I will be watching closely at the combine.

    3. He and Q. Williams are in the same boat; unless the 49ers think Buckner is better suited playing NT or on the outside, there is no way the 49ers will invest in another 3T.

          1. Mid,
This is why I am looking forward to see what Kantavius Street can do in TC.

The size comparisons between him and Oliver are very close. Oliver uses his strength and speed and Street can do the same. And btw, Street is already on the team.

If you watch video of Street, you’ll see a player who displays many of the same virtues as Oliver. And KS was a DE in college as well.

I really feel that this year we focus on an EDGE first and foremost.
My top 3 order of players have not changed.
            1. N. BOSA
            2. J. ALLEN
            3. Q. WILLIAMS
If the FO really likes Oliver, they could trade down between 7-10, to draft him and still get their EDGE later in the 1st rd.

But that might be too risky if the top EDGE’s are gone late in rd one.
We’ll have to wait to see how that develops.

      1. You see, this is where we differ. I think we can move Buckner up and down the line, specifically where there’s an obvious mismatch. Buckner/Armstead/Thomas/Williams or Oliver could afford a ridiculous amount of combinations that you could rotate in, and use to relentlessly barrage the opponent with….

        1. Buckner, Q. Williams, and Oliver are all best suited to playing the 3T. Drafting Williams or Oliver when the team has more crucial needs is a bad idea.

          1. Don’t you think turning down a blue chip player for a very good player that fills a position of need is a bad idea? I do.

            1. Yes, but can you state without any doubt in your mind that Q. Williams or Oliver are upgrades over Buckner at the 3T, Buckner should be moved to NT or the outside, and the team should bypass taking a very much needed LEO with the second pick of the draft while addressing the interior of the DL when it is not a need?

              1. What if we sign Everson Griffen, and Bosa is gone. We take Williams and come back in round 2 to grab our edge if no trade manifests itself?

              2. Griffen has not been cut by the Vikings yet, so we really can’t consider him as an option until further notice.
If the Cardinals cut Nkemdiche as anticipated by several at the Senior Bowl, then Bosa will most likely be available. However, if Griffen is cut by the Vikings and signs with the 49ers, followed by the Cardinals taking Bosa, then it makes more sense for the 49ers to take Josh Allen with the 2nd pick.

              3. Yes. Allen would fill an immediate need at SAM while William’s or Oliver would create more of a logjam in the defensive line interior.

            2. Razor

” Don’t fix what ain’t broke”… Don’t change Buckner to anything …with Allen, Bosa, Ferrell, or Sweat, I think that Armstead, Blair, and Jones fill the D-line with Street and Jullian Taylor in reserve…Let’s concentrate on getting Ahmad Butler and Tyrell Williamson to catch some passes.

    4. Obviously PFF is routinely derided hereabouts, but it’s quite possible Mr. Oliver doesn’t make the top 50 on their big board.

      1. I’ve heard Seb referred to as Commudus by Cassie Baalke. Could this be a brother emperor, Razor?
I thought the nearest brother he had was Maximus in Gladiator, before Commudus Killed Marcus Aurelius, who by the way, wrote Meditations….Such a loss to Western Civilization….Have you not been too hard on the Sebster Cassie Baalke (I know he refers to the stench often)?

        1. Fact is, Sebs loves the attention. He purposely tries to stir it up, say provocative things on purpose-just to be the Sun Zoo of the blog. Known the Mad Hatter since ’68.

        2. Commodus is a name That Cassie should ascribe to herself. The stench of Baalke mimics the life story of Commodus and his father.Like Godzilla, Commodus never lost a gladiator battle, and clubbed to death disabled slaves, delusionally believing them to be giants.
          .
If any, I relate more to the legendary Roman figure, Luciius Quintus Cincinnatus. He voluntarily gave up power after major victories, and was content to be a farmer.
          .
I, too, like to till the earth and grow things, and no, the lure of power does not drive my ambitions.

  9. Spygate
    Deflategate
    Now…Spa-gate? HappyEnding-gate? Whoopie-gate? Bob”John”Kraft-gate?

  10. Guess my biggest questions are- Can Joshua Garnett display some of his Outland Trophy skillsets, and stay healthy enough to win the starting job, or should they draft his replacement?

    Doubtful, uncertain, and yes.

If they do not re-sign Person, will they be forced to draft a guard, or is Garnett and Najee Toran adequate?

Yes and no, unless they hit pay dirt in FA.

Also, how is Laken Tomlinson’s rehabilitation going ? Hope there are no setbacks.

A has-been (or kind of never was). An empty suit (or to be more precise, an empty uniform). And he and Richburg should always be mentioned in the same breath; maybe they would be considered a cute couple by Kardashianistas. Sadly, the Niners will be saddled with the both of them for a while longer.

Finally, should they draft a Center, guard or tackle first?

    Yes.

      1. The only offensive players Shanny drafts in the first round are OT’s and QB’s. Don’t have to worry about WR.

    1. Yes? maybe the question went over your head, but which position should be selected first?
      .
Personally, I hope Garnett wins a starting job at LG, and they move Tomlinson to RG. Then, Elgton Jenkins or Eric McCoy at Center, may be the position of biggest need. Westberg kept being pushed back into the pocket. Niners need a Center who can anchor the position.

      1. Yes? maybe the question went over your head, but which position should be selected first?

The Niners line includes a 3-legged stool, and all the legs are equally bad, like, well, stools. Until all 3 are fixed, there will be no consistency nor adequate stability. Select the best player at any of these positions available, and then the others in turn. Unless they uncharacteristically catch a break in FA, it’ll likely take another couple of years to solidify the line, assuming no more career-ending injuries.

BTW, ordinarily one could argue that since Joe Staley has maybe another year within him, OT isn’t as crucial. But good OTs are so relatively rare, that kind of raises the urgency to parity with G and C, so if a good OT is available and better than G or C options, you take him.

        1. Glad you stopped trying to be glib and answered the question.
          .
I think Staley is timeless, and could play a couple more years. Tackle is not a critical need to fill in this draft.
          .
Maybe if the Tackle position is of such a crucial concern , as you think it is, maybe they should not have traded away Brown.
          .
However, Center is, and if they can find a replacement to Richberg, maybe Richberg could slide to play guard, so by solving the Center problem, the O line can perform well this season.
