Week 2: Seahawks at 49ers

Things are setting up nicely for the 49ers today, as the two only unbeaten teams in the NFC West meet today at Candlestick Park. Click here early and often for today’s running blog.

The Seahawks will be without six big contributors. Left tackle Walter Jones, receiver Deion Branch, center Chris Spencer, linebacker Leroy Hill, cornerback Travis Fisher and defensive tackle Brandon Mebane are among Seattle’s inactive players. Mike Teel is the third quarterback, and defensive tackle Michael Bennett is also on the inactive list.

Meanwhile, the 49ers do not have many injury concerns entering this game.

Here is their list of inactive players: Nate Davis (3rd QB), CB Marcus Hudson, S Curtis Taylor, LB Ahmad Brooks, C Cody Wallace, WR Brandon Jones, WR Jason Hill and DL Ricky Jean-Francois.

Jones is potentially a No. 3 receiver, but he has been out since Aug. 6 due to a broken right shoulder blade. He began practice last week but looked too rusty. He’ll have a chance to get on the field next week against the Vikings.

The 49ers’ win from last week looks even better today. The Cardinals are thumping the Jaguars. OK, so Jacksonville might not be all that great, but to travel to Florida and destroy them is a good win for the Cardinals.

FIRST QUARTER

–Four-man rush on third and 7, and Ray McDonald with the sack. Haralson pressured forced Hasselbeck to step up.

–Frank Gore stopped for 1-yard gain.

–Vernon Davis with 17-yard reception, most of it coming after the catch. First down.

–Isaac Bruce with nice play to play DB and break up what would’ve been a Ken Lucas interception on Hill pass down the field.

–Vernon Davis with a juggling pass to gain 15 on third down. The drive is alive at the Seattle 25.

–Niners are pounding away at the Seattle defense. Gore gains 6 on back to back plays. Now, Glen Coffee enters.

–Coffee stopped for 2-yard loss.

–Patrick Kerney sacks Hill on third and 9. It was Adam Snyder’s man, but Hill’s fault. He held the ball too long and stepped right into Kerney.

–Joe Nedney kicks 37-yard field goal to cap 13-play, 55-yard drive. It’s 49ERS 3, SEAHAWKS 0 with 5:38 remaining in the quarter.

–On the 49ers’ first series, when they went with three WRs, it was Arnaz Battle who entered the game. The 49ers used base personnel (RB, FB, TE and 2 WRs) on nine of 12 scrimmage plays.

–Third and 2 for the Seahawks . . . they have to burn a timeout because T.J. Houshmandzadeh was busy tying his shoe.

–Third and 2 for the Seahawks . . . they have to burn a timeout because T.J. Houshmandzadeh was busy tying his shoe.

–Seneca Wallace enters at QB for a “Wildcat” type play, a handoff to Justin Forsett. It’s a first down. Now, Hasselbeck is back.

–On third and 13, the Seahawks go with a draw play. The 49ers stop Forsett for 8 yards. They’ll punt it away.

–Niners take over at their own 21 with 2:48 left in quarter.

–Frank Gore busted off a 79-yard TD run on the first play. He was watching the live action on the video screen at that end of the stadium, and he angled away from defenders behind him and dove into corner of end zone. It’s 49ERS 10, SEAHAWKS 0 with 2:36 remaining. Gore has 103 yards rushing.

–Three and out for the Seahawks. The 49ers can turn this into a laugher.

–Seahawks injury report: LB Lofa Tatupu’s return is questionable with a hamstring injury.

–Allen Rossum just returned the punt 75 yards for a touchdown. However, it’s coming back. There’s an illegal block in the back by Glen Coffee, and personal foul on Nate Clements.

–Tony Pashos enters at right tackle for the 49ers, but it’s a three-and-out, as Hill is sacked (a coverage sack) on the final play of the first quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

–Seahawks are putting together a nice drive. But this is a big third down. It’s third and 2 from SF 18 . . . Shawntae Spencer with terrific coverage on Houshmandzadeh on fade route.

–Olindo makes 36-yard FG. It’s 49ERS 10, SEAHAWKS 3 at 10:04 of 2nd Q.

–Niners take over at the 20. Pashos is still in there at RT. Singletary planned to do this before the game. Don’t think this classifies as a demotion for Snyder.

–Injury update: Seattle LT Sean Locklear (ankle) will not return. He just left field on a cart.

–On third and 2, pitch to Gore for 13 yards. He’s having a monster day.

–Seattle DE Lawrence Jackson with the sack. Guess whom he beat? That’s right, RT Tony Pashos.

–It could’ve been a big gainer for 49ers, but Isaac Bruce with the drop.

–Niners must punt again. Andy Lee with great punt to pin the Seahawks at the 4-yard line with 6:20 left in half.

–Another three-and-out for Seahawks; 49ers should get good field position after punt. And they will. Take over at Seattle 43.

–FB Moran Norris with a 15-yard run. That’s right, Moran Norris with a 15-yard run.

–Snyder is back at RT. Pashos checks in as a tight end for one play, an incomplete pass.

–Nedney on to attempt a 42-yard FG. He made it. 49ERS 13, SEAHAWKS 3 with 2:57 left in the quarter. It’s a five-play, 18-yard scoring drive in 2:09.

–Completions of 13 and 15 yards to Nate Burleson and Deon Butler, followed by Justin Forsett’s 14-yard run. Seahawks have ball at the SF 4 with :57 left.

–Matt Hasselbeck is hurt after hit from Patrick Willis at the goal line. That looks painful. Seneca Wallace will enter after timeout. It’ll be third-and-goal from the 1.

–Wallace to Jones, and the Seahawks are within 3 points. Looks like that was Manny Lawson’s responsibility. They’re hanging around despite all the adversity. It’s 49ERS 13, SEAHAWKS 10 with :22 left in the half.

–Eddie DeBartolo is honored at the half. He’s first person inducted into the newly created 49ers Hall of Fame.

THIRD QUARTER

–Frank Gore might have just put this game away on the first play of the second half. Remember that 79-yard run in the first half that was his career-long? Well, he has a new career long. Gore had an 80-yard TD run. It’s 49ERS 20, SEAHAWKS 10.

–Another Seahawks injury. CB Josh Wilson will not return.

–49ers going with the “Taser” on third and 5.  . . . Micheal Spurlock does not run that offense very well. He fumbled the handoff to Gore (or was he trying to keep it?). Niners have to punt.

–Niners are backed up, with the ball at the 1-yard line with 7:31 left in third after great punt from Jon Ryan.

–Here’s a note. Frank Gore joins Barry Sanders as only other player in NFL history with two runs of at least 79 yards in the same game.

–On third and 10 from the 1, Hill hits Moran Norris for 11 yards. Then, Hill scrambles out to the 29. They have some breathing room now.

Jackson got around Hill again to force fumble. Joe Staley recovers it  back at the 16.

–Spurlock with the Taser again. This time, he wildly overthrows a wide-open Vernon Davis. The 49ers should scrap the Taser . . . or at least have Robinson as the man running it.

–Seahawks take over at their own 47 with 2:30 left in the third after nice return from Burleson.

–Nate Clements is called for pass interference. It was close on Houshmandzadeh. He got there just a split-second too early. Seahawks ball at the 49ers’ 35.

–Max Unger, the man the 49ers would have drafted in the second round had they not traded their pick to Carolina, is called for holding.

–Goldson with the interception on rebound after nice play from Clements vs. Burleson. That was Goldson’s first career pick, and the first from a 49ers free safety in more than two full seasons.

FOURTH QUARTER

–Shaun Hill hits Isaac Bruce for two third-down passes to keep the drive alive and keep the clock ticking.

–Niners are chewing a lot of clock with the short-passing game. Passes to Gore, Bruce and Norris . . . they have a third-and-2 coming up.

–Hill hits Delanie Walker for the first down . . . but center Eric Heitmann is called for holding. That wiped out a 20-yard pass.

–Gore catches pass short of the sticks, but there’s a facemask penalty that will tack on 15 yards.

–Pashos with the holding penalty on a sweep to Gore that moves it back to the 30.

–Niners call a timeout before a third-and-10 play from the Seattle 21.

–Injury update: 49ers RB Glen Coffee has a right hip pointer. His return is questionable.

–RB Frank Gore (right ankle sprain) is questionable to return. His day might be over.

–RB Michael Robinson is in the game on this third-down play in place of Gore, who limped off after last play. Incomplete to Vernon Davis.

–Nedney with 39-yard FG attempt. It’s good. That makes it 49ERS 23, SEAHAWKS 10 with 6:53 remaining

And I’m going to start heading down to the field.
