49ers are one of Deshaun Watson’s preferred destinations

Could another quarterback move be in the works for San Francisco?

A report surfaced yesterday stating San Francisco would meet with Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. The report was quickly shot down, stating the 49ers would not be meeting with the embattled quarterback.

Jason Dumas of KRON 4 News later reported Watson I interested in joining San Francisco.

“Despite multiple refuted reports, I’ve been told that there is in fact mutual interest between the 49ers and Deshaun Watson. And that it is actually one of Deshaun’s preferred destinations. Take that for what it’s worth.”

The NFL Network’s Jim Trotter followed with more on how Watson could get his wish in a string of tweets early Wednesday morning.

“Are the 49ers in on Deshaun Watson? Not at this point; it is not something they are pursuing. But there could be a scenario in which that changes. Let’s go through it. First, Deshaun and his team would have to drive the bus and create an environment in which the 49ers believe they have a credible shot at landing Deshaun Watson. How is that done? Deshaun Watson and his team would essentially have to tell Houston that he will only waive his no-trade for San Francisco.

“Privately, Deshaun Watson has expressed an interest in playing for San Francisco. Then, DW and his team would have to broker a deal knowing that San Francisco does not have the draft capitol that Houston desires. It could become a game of chicken then: Deshaun Watson couldn’t threaten to sit out a second season, but would he?

“If Team Watson were to get Houston to reconsider its demands and create an environment in which San Francisco has a legitimate chance of landing Watson, then the 49ers would be willing to engage because Watson is that good. But at this time the 49ers are not interested in creating unnecessary drama. They like Trey Lance and are happy with him. But at the same time it could be considered foolish not to seriously look into Watson if a deal can be done. The organization has no plans to meet with Watson at this point. And as I said earlier, they are not pursuing him. But … if he were to create a scenario in which he could fall into their laps — things would get interesting.”

This makes two reliable sources stating Deshaun Watson has interest in joining the 49ers.

As Trotter states, the 49ers are not currently in on Deshaun Watson. That may change if Watson and his team make it such that San Francisco is assured of getting a trade done.

The 49ers future looks bright with Trey Lance, but with Watson you know you are getting a Pro Bowl player.

  1. This would have to be a 3 way trade or the main piece from SF would have to be Deebo or Bosa. I don’t think Houston wants Lance.

    1. Otto, did you READ the article? the first premise is that DW tells the Texans that hell ONLY waive his no trade clause to come to S.F! The Texans would be backed into a corner!!!!!!! They take WHATEVER THEY CAN GET!!!!! Or pay over $35 to DW to sit out the season again!! They would NOT be getting Bosa or Deebo

    1. Gary
      Particularly Ms.Denise DeBartolo-York!
She properly nixed one HC prospect a few years ago for character issues.
For what its worth, I supported her decision.
PS-Jack Hammer, you’ve been doing a credible job here. I certainly don’t always agree with your takes, but that’s not my criteria for ‘doing a good job.’ 👍

  2. The horrible truth is that the Niners are not totally sold on Trey and have not been since early in the days following his drafting. They way overpaid for him as we know now. Would Shanny want to bury the mistake by getting an all-pro-proven QB? He might. There are many wheels spinning in the Niners organization right now.

    1. Sorry but this is complete fluff.

The horrible truth is that the Niners are not totally sold on Trey and have not been since early in the days following his drafting. WHAT’S YOUR SOURCE?

They way overpaid for him as we know now. NO ONE KNOWS THAT.

Would Shanny want to bury the mistake by getting an all-pro-proven QB? He mig ht. LET’S BE CLEAR: YOU THINK IT’S A MISTAKE. THERE ARE ASTUTE PEOPLE WHO DON’T.

There are many wheels spinning in the Niners organization right now. SAYS YOU AND MAYBE GRANT COHN.

  3. Allie, that is not the truth at all!!! it is your OPINION! Not sure how you “overpay” for something that you might not have the chance to purchase ever again! If the Niners are ever picking top 3 in the near future….there is a good chance Shanny aint around to make said pick.
There is no qb in this years draft that compares to Lance! Ppl who get paid millions to opine on these matters say Lance would be the top qb in this draft (and its not even close) and likely the #1 overall pick.

As much as i love TL’s potential……..there in lies the issue!! its ONLY POTENTIAL!!! Whereas DW is a PROVEN commodity. What i think is happening…..is that DW dosent really want to go to any of the teams that are ACTIVLY trying to get him……so hes reaching. Saints and panthers arent very good……and if they give up 3 first round picks to get him…….well then heck, hes in the same exact situation hes in now!
So he reached out to the Falcons…cuz hes from GA and likely a Falcons fan growing up. The thinking is that if hes destin to be on a bad team….mine as well be the one he grew up rooting for.

Or…..going for the hail marry and trying to get to SF…….since it has been his top destination going back to last year, with a good roster, coach and FO……and……wait for it……….an unproven qb penciled into the starting spot

  4. I highly highly doubt that the Niners would be even slightly interested in bringing on a pervert to lead the team. Does anyone believe that Watson will follow the straight and narrow from now on? If you do I’ve got a bridge you might be interested in.
It’s not happening and any articles to the contrary are click bait.

    1. The League may declare him ineligible to play for an extended period. While he got off in Texas, he still has 22 clouds over his head., Everything “reported “ shows this is solely the Texans problem, Niners would never consider him.

Come on Hammer, don’t indulge your inner Grant with garbage like this.

      1. I’ve been waiting to hear someone say this, Rib. It’s the absolute truth imo, and, with the exception of Carolina (Tepper), it’s kind of shocking to me that there are teams pursuing him.

  5. Sorry to lose Mostert but I think it was just too risky to sign him given frequent injuries. Not sure about his level of residual speed.
TL is a great character man but, apparently, not especially popular with team leaders. What is the ceiling is..we are not sure. He was not ready last year and a top talent needed to have been more ready than TL was. Yes, he improved against a bad Houston team. We are risking this season on his talent. The number two is a fiasco. Moriota would be far better. Great character and leader. Decent QB who could start with some teams.

  6. people people please we dont have the capital to trade for Watson . they want 2 or 3 1st round picks plus a 2nd and players. we dont have 1st round picks for two years and im sure they are not going to wait that long for our 1st rounders

    1. Chill out everyone. Forget about Watson, he aint coming here no matter what HE wants. He hasn’t
played in a long time, is still embroiled in legal issues, may be benched by the NFL, would be a MAJOR
drama event the niners are allergic to and will cost a fortune!
Also shut up about Trey, y’all know NOTHING about him. He is high upside kid who needs a lot of coaching and gametime. Stop trying to be the ONE who calls it. Just wait and watch, you’ll see.

  7. I tend to trust Steve Young and Joe Montana: there is something not ready about TL. He is better than KAP who was never much more than a running QB. (Kap is done as he lost his speed and can still not throw with accuracy or read defenses.) I like TL but he did not play much college ball and played in a very low-level league. Niners way overpaid for the chance to draft him. If there is no market for Jimmy G bring him back for a final year? Break TL in more gently. And not having a valid second QB is a terrible mistake.

    1. Of course there’s something not ready about Lance. He needs to play. Did pretty well against Houston, though. And training camp should help alot.

Did you know that Aikman finished his first year at Dallas with a 0–11 record as a starter with 9 touchdowns and 18 interceptions?

  8. I like Matt Ryan. He is mature, solid, and has an accurate throw. He is not mobile but neither was Jimmy G. Should we consider him for a year or two? Shanny knows him well. TL is fine as a backup.

  9. Watson is gone to Cleveland for 3 first-rounder picks. A big risk for Cleveland but so was the gross overpayment of the Niners for an untried rookie. Let us hope it works out. So far, a blah and uninspiring free agency period for the Niners. No really game-changing moves and the loss of two good players.
