49ers – Chiefs Live Blog

This is the live blog for the 49ers week 7 matchup with the Kansas City from Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. I will provide updates and analysis from the press box throughout the game.

11:25 According to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, Christian McCaffrey was able to watch all of the 49ers coach’s meetings from this week.

Kyle Shanahan is expected to have a package of plays for McCaffrey today. I expect to see McCaffrey on the field as early as San Francisco’s first offensive possession.

11:45 Travis Kelce has been the engine of the Chiefs offense this season. Look for Jimmie Ward to be matched up with him throughout the game today.

12:00 Inactive for the 49ers: Arik Armstead, Tyler Kroft, Kemoko Turay, Jordan Mason, Nick Zakelj, Dontae Jonson

Charvarius Ward is active. A good sign for the 49ers secondary.

1:12 Charvarius Ward and Talanoa Hufanga lined up with the starting defense during warmups. The loss of Emmanuel Moseley stings, but San Francsico’s defense appears to be in good shape. This matchup is going to be a fun one to watch.

1:21 Levi’s Stadium is electric. This place comes alive for big games.

1:23 Kansas City won the toss and deferred. The 49ers will start on offense.

1:32 Christian McCaffrey gets in the game on the 49ers fourth offensive play and gains ten yards. They give it to him again on the next play and he nearly breaks it, but a Chiefs defender is able to grab the shirt hanging out from under his jersey to drag him down after a gain of nine.

On third and four from the Chiefs eleven, Jimmy Garoppolo hits Brandon Aiyuk on a quick slant but it’s dropped. The 49ers settle for a field goal.

49ers 3 Chiefs 0

1:36 Jimmie Ward on the field with Talanoa Hufanga and Tashaun Gipson to start for the 49ers defense.

1:37 Tashaun Gipson deflects Patrick Mahomes pass on third down and Talanoa Hufanga comes up with the interception. 49ers ball on the Chiefs 34.

1:40 The 49ers offense cashes in.

Deebo Samuel makes a terrific catch on a high throw down the middle for 22-yards to get into the redzone.

On second and goal, Garoppolo escapes to his right and tosses a pass to Ray-Ray McCloud. The receiver is able to track it down for the score.

49ers 10 Chiefs 0

1:49 Terrific play design by Andy Reid leads to a 27-yard gain by Travis Kelce on 3rd and inches.

49ers defense was in man coverage, and Kelce motioned from the outside. This caused confusion for the defense and the tight end was uncovered in the right flat for an easy catch and run.

1:55 Andy Reid doing what he does. Gets Mahomes on the edge for a gain of 18 on a pass to Mecole Hardman.

On first and goal from the eight he calls a Jet Sweep around the left side and Hardman takes it in for the score.

That drive was too easy.

Chiefs 10 49ers 7

2:08 A completion from Garoppolo to Aiyuk picks up 24-yards, then it becomes the Christian McCaffrey Show. McCaffrey with a gain of 13 on a screen and he follows that up with another gain of 13 on a run.

Mike McGlinchey gets beat by Chris Jones for a sack and the 49ers are forced to settle for a 50-yard field goal by Robbie Gould.

49ers 13 Chiefs 7

2:12 The 49ers offense with Deebo Samuel has become predictable. When the receiver lines up in the backfield the play is going to the outside every time.

2:13 Talanoa Hufanga is down after making the tackle on a quick slant. Looks like he took a shot to the head.

Remember, he was in the concussion protocol this week. He is headed to the blue tent for observation.

2:24 Kansas City goes 90 yards in ten plays to take the lead. Mecole Hardman running around right end untouched for a 25-yard touchdown.

Andy Reid keeps attacking Jimmie Ward in coverage.

Chiefs 14 49ers 13

2:40 AWFUL. After catching a break and getting the ball in the redzone on muffed punt, Jimmy Garoppolo throws an interception in the endzone.

Garoppolo was trying to get the ball to Ray-Ray McCloud, but the receiver was blanketed. Huge mistake. Had an opportunity to retake the lead and get nothing.

2:47 What is the 49ers offensive identity? They ran the ball on five of their first nine plays, putting together their best drive of the game. Since that point they have run the ball only seven times on their last 24.

2:53 The 49ers catch a break. A Patrick Mahomes touchdown pass is nullified by an illegal chop block on Nick Bosa. Instead of running a play on third down, Andy Reid chooses to go for the field goal. Harrison Butker is wide right from 39-yards out and it is a one-point game at the half.

2:58 The 49ers ran 34 plays in the first half, 21 called passes and 13 called runs.

With Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback the 49ers are 13-9 since the start of 2021. When they throw the ball more than they pass they are 5-8. This one isn’t looking good.

3:12 That was easy.

Kansas City with a 48-yard kickoff return to open the second half, plus a 15-yard penalty on the 49ers.

From there the Chiefs go 34-yards on three plays, Clyde Edwards-Helaire going in untouched on a run around the right side.

San Franciso is lucky to be down by only eight.

Chiefs 21 49ers 13

3:22 The 49ers respond with a field goal.

Garoppolo found Juszczyk for 17-yards to convert a third and long before a pair of Jeff Wilson Jr. runs picked up 25 to get the offense to the Chiefs 34. That’s where the drive stalled.

The San Francisco defense needs a stop now. Since intercepting Patrick Mahomes on the first possession, they haven’t made a stop.

3:34 The defense can’t get it done.

On third and 20, Jerick McKinnon takes a screen pass from Patrick Mahomes 34-yards down the left side. Mahomes finds Justin Watson on the next play for a three-yard touchdown. Watson smoked Jimmie Ward on the play.

Chiefs 28 49ers 16

3:44 The 49ers offense is on the move as the third quarter comes to a close. Three consecutive completions from Garoppolo have them down to the Chiefs 27.

San Francisco is 0-26 when entering the fourth quarter down by more than four points.

3:49 Garoppolo hits George Kittle in the endzone from 15 yards out. San Francisco back within five. The defense needs to come up with a stop.

3:57 Kansas City goes right down the field, 80 yards on only six plays. Mecole Hardman scores from three yards out, his third touchdown of the game.

The 49ers defense hasn’t been able to make a stop the last two weeks.

4:04 Frank Clark blows around Trent Williams and sacks Jimmy Garoppolo in the endzone for a safety. This game is over.

Chiefs 37 49ers 23

4:13 Another Kansas City touchdown. The JuJu Smith-Schuster left all alone over the middle of the field and he goes 45-yards for the sixth Chiefs touchdown of the game.

Chiefs 44 49ers 23

4:30 Two-minute warning. Brock Purdy is in the game and moving the offense until he throws an interception in the endzone.

I’m headed down to the locker room.

  1. So sad that the Niners blew 3 games they should have won. Now we have to beat better teams. Playoffs are likely in doubt and we are stuck with Jimmy for the season. But, I would love to be surprised. Atlanta slaughtered today but looked like a SB team last week.

  2. I am curious about Nick Zakelj. We have yet to see him and we need a healthier OL. I also hope to see Verrett. He is one of my very favorite players.

  3. Why not have CMC in the lineup on that 3rd down after the way he has been running? I don’t get that at all.

  4. Good start, but we can’t have field goals against this offense. They need to finish those drives in the end zone. Not a huge surprise McCaffery can contribute right away, RB is so instinctual.

  5. The KC offense is a whole different level than the garbage the Niners have played so far this year. Bosa needs to get his head in the damn game, back to back offsides and still no pressure on Mahomes.

  6. McGlinchey is a terrible pass blocker and have you noticed that almost every good run has been behind Williams, Kittle and Banks. They seem to avoid running behind McGlinchey and Burford.

    1. I hope they move on from him next year. Always been a bad pass blocker, and isn’t the runblocker he used to be either.

  7. Seems like every KC run is for 5 or more yards. Run defense needs to play now.

Hufunga needs to learn to tackle or he will derail a promising career with all these suicide hits.

  8. The defense is getting it’s ass kicked yet again. No pass D, no rush D, and way too many penalties. The offense must score TD’s if they are to have a chance of staying in the game.

  9. Doesn’t look like a top D to me. I like Ryans better than Saleh, but he doesn’t seem to have a clue at this moment.

  10. McGlinchey once again standing there like an idiot staring into open spaces as #50 just runs by him.

  11. The penalties have been devastating.

But sometimes a little luck clean clean up from the muck.

  12. Everyone was talking about how good this defense was but the devils advocate would say what offenses have they played?
Chicago?, Denver?, Carolina?, LA???? Seattle is the best offense they have faced to date.

    1. They were ranked #1 but clearly your going to loose some ranking playing an offense like KC but they are still a very good offense.

    1. Jimmy literally threw the football up for grabs, inside the Chiefs 10 yard line. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? This is a QB who is in his EIGTH NFL season? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

The 49ers could trade for 20 Christian McCaffreys and it wouldn’t fix their 2 biggest issues.

      1) Play calling (KYLE SHANAHAN), especially inside the redzone (including very dumb situational awareness)!

      2) JIMMY RICHARD GAROPPOLO!

  13. Jimmy being Jimmy. Why he can’t play situational football is beyond me. OL gets beat right off the snap; take the sack and get the 3 points; but no he has to throw up a pass into heavy traffic in a compressed field.

  14. Without doubt the worst play caller going around shannahan why would u not leave mcaffray in and give him the ball.🤦‍♂️

    1. From the same Felix. Quote, unquote: “It’s too soon to rank Shanahan in my opinion but he’s already near the top (of 49ers coaches) and could continue to rise.” Delusional. Totally and completely delusional.

  15. Its hard to criticize the 9ers D they are playing maybe the best QB in all of football and are without Armstead, Kinlaw, Moseley and Al-Shaair and now Lenior

    1. It’s not just Mahomes. It seems like the KC offensive play calls are superior (i.e. taking advantage of the defensive looks or creating confusion within our defense).

        1. Hey. Once the game is out of reach, which will be soon, I have no problem looking at what Purdy can do. I like Purdy a lot. But no way KS puts him in at this moment. Just won’t happen.

    1. Cubus,
In that SB KC was missing both starting OT’s ans Mahomes couldn’t move because of a foot injury.

      1. I guess I forgot that. Okay, I’m going to have a positive outlook going into the 2nd half. 49ers are lucky to be in the game and it’s basically like starting the first half (0-0).

  16. Kyle needs to remember who his team is. The run game was working, and the more you let Jimmy pass the sooner one of his specials comes up again. Plus the run game keeps the defense on the the bench, the only safe place for it today. Time for some significant adjustments at halftime.

  17. Crazy week so far. Just like every week this year. Carolina destroys TB and Washington beats the Packers.

  18. When SF was up 10 I said they would lose by double digits…. my prediction is looking pretty good right now.

      1. No, I just hate this inept effing offense.
They have no identity… they want to run but wont commit to it and cant pass.

  19. That pressure rate stat! Ryans needs to earn his pay and dial up some pressure. So far looks like Kyle and Ryan’s just drank a Coke at halftime.

  20. You get the feeling Shanahan is content just to be within two scores and say they tried. It’s pretty much that every game. Why he ran his prize QB into the teeth of the defense we’ll never know because number 10 out there is simply not it.

Maybe we can draw up 2 more FG drives before this is over.

      1. Or it’s NEVER the coaches fault, right Felix?

Like when your coach is a total pu$$y and declines a holding penalty that would make it 3rd and 19 because he’s worried they might convert it?

        Denver ring a bell?

Or when he thinks going on a 16 play drive late in the fourth down two scores is the honorable way to die?

      2. When the team gets beat in every facet of the game. Makes Multiple boneheaded penalties. Multiple turnovers. You bet your ass the blame starts at the top with the HC!

  21. That may have been the dagger in the heart. The defense in just too hurt and has nothing to give today.

  22. Interesting Stat on TV today — Since 2017, 49ers players have missed more games due to injury than any other team in football. In other words, during the Shanahan era.

  23. I think Wilson lost that in the sun.

Nice that Kittle got a TD. About time the offense participates in the second half of a game.

    1. I’m wondering why Kyle didn’t opt for a field goal there on third down? Would have been the “safe” option.

  24. Don’t worry guys. Shanahan has a scripted 20 play drive setup for a Robbie Gould 47 yard field goal coming up.

  25. Keep in mind, guys, the Chiefs came into today with one of the worst passing defenses in the NFL. So what does this mean? It means this was a bad matchup for the 49ers!

    1. Jax is so right. The Niners are not a passing threat in any way and defense has been bad in recent weeks.

  26. Kyle goes for FG, Reid for the TD. Yes, I was right: mediocre team with no playoffs this year. They overhyped this team this summer.

  27. This team deserved to get embarrassed today! From Kyle on down they need to look in the mirror and do a hell of a lot better.

  28. The D is gassed. No Kinlaw, Armstead, Moseley, Al Shaair, Greenlaw and a one armed Ward. This D didn’t suddenly get bad they are just incredible short handed. I predicted earlier today that Mahomes would throw for 350 to 400 yards I guess I was wrong.

    1. Sorry, OC. This defense even at full strength would get trounced by KS’ superior play calling and strategy. Up til now the defense didn’t really play any good teams. The D is way overrated. But maybe this will be the game that is the kick in the *ss this defense needs.

      1. Cubus,
Do you believe there is a D in the league who with 6 starters out would look better?

        1. The depth, particularly on the DL, is enough. Having Armstead back wouldn’t have made much difference. Who knows what Kinlaw can really do as he’s virtually never available. Mooney Ward was terrible today and probably shouldn’t have played. Do you really think having Mosely back would have helped. No, Ryans got schooled today. Let’s hope that this embarassment is the kick in the *ss they need to stop believing the hype.

  29. Jimmy G was pretty good today as was CMC, Wilson and Kittle. KS wasn’t the problem today it was the ST’s and O line and i’m not sure they are going to get better.

    1. Coach,
Jimmy threw the ball up for grabs in the endzone that was intercepted. That’s a mortal sin in football.

Every time Shanahan put Deebo and CMC in the backfield, everybody knew that they were going to get the ball. Shanahan has lost his element of surprise on play calls. This loss is definitely not a season ender, but it sure helps any team that plays us going forward the confidence to beat us.

      1. AES,
You are right that was a terrible pass but the O line let 2 players thru untouched. Like I always say games are won and lost upfront.

  30. I like how people are surprised by this.
A team with an inept offense and a banged up defense go against a team with a great offense and people thought they had a chance.

  31. This is what you call an old fashioned ‘WHOOPIN’! Remember all of energy this game started with, when Christian McCaffrey was doing his thing?

And then reality set in when fans were reminded that they’ve seen this movie before? The movie where Jimmy Garoppolo has ZERO pocket presence, and just isn’t capable of winning a shootout?

And the reality is, Christian McCaffrey will add some things to this team, but he’s not going to help Jimmy win a shootout, that’s for sure!

  32. another no-effort game. Even Jack is confessing the end. We need to look ahead to next year. We need to jettison expensive, non-performing players.

  33. McGlincheys gotta go so does Brendel as does Brunskill and Burford. We also need to draft/sign a LT I think Williams is getting close to the end but we don’t have any high picks we gave them all up for Lance and CMC.

  34. A total beat down, I know many here will pick out their favorite whipping boys, but KC was just a better team in all areas today.

  35. Guys this one is clearly on McCaffrey for not being sufficiently prepared. He had 48 hours. No excuse. Kyle can only do so much.

  36. The good news is we have the RAMs next week. I wish we play them 17 times. Then we will be undefeated.

  37. Second week in a row that the defense has allowed the opposing QB to get a QB rating over 130.

Kyle has built a tissue thin great roster. It can never stay healthy. When will he ever get heat for his teams always being devastated by injuries?

    1. purdy should start..Jimmy G is done as is the season. As I said, the blown game in Chicago was an omen of what was to come.

      1. blaming this loss on Jimmy is just plain lazy. if all you saw was bad qb play you were not watching

        1. Didn’t you see Jimmy playing defense? He gave up 6 TD’s. He lost the game on offense and defense.

          1. David,
Jimmy didn’t have a BAD game, but he’s definitely a QB that doesn’t put fear in opposing defenses. There’s a mental aspect of the game that many people don’t see, especially if they have never played the game. And playing against a QB that isn’t a threat can psychologically give the defense an edge.
I believe that this was a big reason why Shanahan made the deal for Lance. Jimmy is a good QB, but the 49ers need a QB that worries opposing teams.

            1. My only point was (is) putting today’s loss all on Jimmy is pure ignorance. Some questionable play calls and a porous defense were the biggest factors today.

  38. Where was Deebo today? The wideback looks dead. Time for Deebo to relearn to play WR and get rid of that 15% drop rate. That cute trick hasn’t worked in weeks, the NFL has caught up.

  39. Oneniner. That’s just ridiculous. This loss is not Jimmy’s fault. His passer rating was 99 and Purdys is 30. I’m just shocked that we gave up 530 yards. The Jimmy lead offense totaled almost 450 yards.

    1. Jimmy played okay, but he never should have thrown that panicked interception in the endzone. As a veteran he should have taken the sack. Not that it would have made any difference, but it could for many other games.

      1. he gave the Chiefs 8 easy points – how the fck is that playing OK

Killed the momentum before the half

        1. I seem to recall That Mahomes had an interception. That doesn’t make either one a bad quarterback. This game was Not the fault of Jimmy.

          1. MY QUESTION BEFORE THE GAME – Guess how many throws over 20 yards Jimmy will complete on sunday?\

The answer pretty much confirms if we win or lose

            WTF – Jimmyg Sucks

He threw an int at the goaline – and gave up a safety

        2. what 8 points? the chiefs didnt score off the turnover and we would have to have kicked a field goal. 3 points in a game we gave up 44 doesnt matter very much

  40. When you don’t ever make OL a priority, and you have an offense that relies precise timing in your run blocking, you’re going to have issues, it’s not rocket science. And then when QB is the type of QB that relies on offensive precision, and is unable to create on his own, you’ve got a ceiling that just isn’t high enough to compete with the big boys in a quarterback driven, passing dominant league!

The Seahawks are likely going to win the NFC West if they can stay healthy. How infuriating is that?

  41. When you don’t ever make your OL a priority, and you don’t have a QB who can play off-script, and your offensive scheme is a run-first offense that relies on absolute precision from the OL, you’re setting yourself up for failure! It’s that simple guys!

    1. Any reasonable person, who isn’t invested in KS like we are, would question how good of a HC KS is. Nobody in their right mind would think he is an elite coach if they saw that stat.

      1. The label offensive genius needs to be revisited with that stat. Seahawk’s Offense is top 5 with Jeno smith and we got you know what.

        1. Ask anyone who isn’t a 49ers fan (as I stated in my post). I’m talking about objectivity. Hey, I don’t like it any more than you do.

          1. I’d prefer the opinion of professional football players, coaches, etc. the answer has been clear and one game doesn’t change that. Also, he didn’t have a single penalty, missed tackle or any number of bad plays.

        2. On what basis???
0 – 25 when behind 7 pts or more and 1 – 30 when.behind 3 pts or more heading in the 4th quarter is definitley NOT elite? Anyone outside this fanbase will agree.

      2. Same problems season, after season. Always amongst the league leaders in injuries, which eliminates a good roster. Too many games with a lack of discipline and lots of penalties. An offense that is always underwhelming. Too many games lost after a 10 point lead, and the team NEVER makes a comeback if behind by more the a FG in the 4th quarter.

He just has way to many problems to be considered an elite HC.

        1. Does going to the Super Bowl and NFC championship game 2 out of the past 3 years count for anything? How many coach’s can claim better? You list penalties but these are professional grown men making these. They’ve been coached on this their entire lives. Who the hell is that a professional head coaches fault. Your going to blame him for injuries also? Idiotic.

          1. Quote unquote from Felix: “Shanahan is only hammered by some know nothing fans but not by anyone who matters or is a knowledgeable football person. It’s too soon to rank Shanahan (among 49er coaches) in my opinion but he’s already near the top and could continue to rise.”

Since 2017, more players have missed more games on the 49ers than any other team in football.

We understand you’re delusional. Many people are similarly afflicted. But please at long last face up to it and embrace it or the sake of the sane on this blob.

            1. Explain how injuries to players is the head coaches fault. Do you have any other ridiculous reasons why he’s not a good coach?

          2. Are you Kyle’s fluffer? Jesus you are such an apologists for him. One season of bad injuries is a fluke. Leading the NFL in injuries 6 1/2 seasons in is a real problem that clearly rests on the head of Kyle. His team consistently underperform. He has built a very good roster, but it has giant flaws. There are too many games like this were the team looks completely unprepared to play in every aspect. Kyle is way overrated by clowns like you. Go back to worshipping him in your corner.

            1. Of course injuries are a problem but can you make a convincing argument as to how injuries are a coaches fault?
“It’s a very good roster but has giant flaws.” Do you know the meaning of the word oxymoron?
How the heck would you know if a team was completely unprepared? You have no clue. Use your brain.

              1. Felix the fluffer, must drive his car down the road with a flat tire pouring smoke out of the engine. Everyone can see there is a problem, except him.

  42. Today we witnessed the perfect example of a great QB vs a good QB. Mahomes sliced up our defense like a hot knife thru soft butter. Our vaunted defense is nowhere near that at the moment.
But, there’s a lot of football left to play. The 49ers need to forget this one as quickly as possible.

  43. Felix what do u do for a living tongue punch shannahan dot I bet u constantly stick up for him whenever 49 lose his not the problem but when the win it’s because of his play calling and coaching give it a break the buck stops with him he is the one who puts the players on the park and chooses the squad so when we see a performance like this it’s obviously his fault he drinks his own bath water believing he is some great play callers.

    1. Delusional. Completely and totally delusional. Help is available. Please seek it out.

  44. Meanwhile, the real 49ers NFC Championship offense is on TV tonight. Mike McDaniel (the genius behind the scenes for Kyle), and the Miami Dolphins, are about to put on a show tonight. Raheem Mostert, and his 4.29 speed is doing it all for the Dolphins. He’s returning kicks, and scoring TD’s already, and there are still 9:31 left in the 1st QTR!

Do you guys think the 49ers can trade McCaffrey, Gray, and McCloud, for Raheem Mostert, straight up?

    1. jax/anonymous/49reasons, etc.
Let’s not get carried away Bud. A lot could happen with ten more games to play.
All we have to do is win our division, and that is still a strong possibility.
Don’t throw in the white flag just yet.

  45. 1. Bitter , angry , frustrated.
    2. Brock purdy is terrible. Pretty much everyone except 1-2 humans and their 3-4 alter internet personalities understand that.
    3. We need to fix every aspect of our O line. Yes, even find the heir apparent to Trent. We also need a DT who can both perform at a high level and stay healthy.
    4. Deebo is unstoppable when he catches short to medium passes with some daylight ahead of him. Why aren’t we designing those plays for him consistently.
    5. 2 weeks in a row we allowed opponents to convert on 3rd and long which resulted in a game winning score.
    6. Gould hit all of his kicks but we need TDs not FGs.
    7. Let’s say they didn’t convert on the Valdes Scantling long pass and we were only down by 5. Does anyone think that Kyle and Jimmy could successfully orchestrate a game winning drive with 4 minutes left?

    1. “Does anyone think that Kyle and Jimmy could successfully orchestrate a game winning drive with 4 minutes left?”
Not me. 1 – 30 when down 3 pts or more heading in the 4th since 2017.

      1. What do you think the problem is ? They can sustain long 12 play 8 minute drives early in the game. I concur with Aiyuk – they have the talent.

“I just feel like we have too many…too many..players that can change the game to only score 23 points.” — Brandon Aiyuk post game interview.

Also I am not giving up on the season. I was ready to flip my table over after the Indy loss at home last year and we would up in the NFC Championship game. We are a better team than last year but need to fix things quickly.

        1. I think KS offense relies too much.on that run-controlled style. It is great when you are ahead and it keeps your Def fresh but tough when gets behind. It seems like KS get stuck in that mode and cannot get out of it. Last week’s game was a perfect examlple. Down 14 pts and no urgency at all. We kind of saw the same approach with JH’s offense and it drove us crazy coz the games were always close but we have seen his offense come back from a double digit pts to win the game. It’s been awhile seen we have seen that here. Also, I noticed most of our points this year comes from those early scripted plays then it goes downhill from there. The 2nd half offense has been below average! Ugh.
Too many weapons for this offense to not put up a lot of points.
