49ers offense sluggish on 2nd day of training camp

SANTA CLARA — Kyle Shanahan expected his offense would play better the first two days of training camp.

The 49ers head coach was so concerned Friday after practice, he forgot he was the 49ers’ head coach. For a minute, he thought he was their offensive coordinator.

Technically, he is their offensive coordinator and their head coach. But on Friday, he went full coordinator. Reverted to his old job and way of thinking.

  1. I might sound like a broken record since I’ve said this all offseason, but look for Witherspoon to ballhawk more as he gains confidence, like he did in college. He seems pretty confident already. I mocked him to the 49ers several times because I thought he had Island potential with ballhawking ability, and yes, that speed and size combination. Like Sherm, he’s good at appearing to be beat, only to recover and make a play on the ball. The sky is the limit for Ahkello.

  2. Maybe hiring an OC would help prepare the offense better….
    .
Easy solution- Promote Scangarello, Embree or Turner to OC.
    .
I would promote Bobby Turner, and re-hire Tom Rathman as RB coach.

  3. We just concluded day 2 of training camp….day two. If the offense had done well some would be eviscerating the defense.

If Grant was living the dream in LA and covering the Rams, would he be ripping HC Sean McVay…Sean serving as his own offensive coordinator?

    1. Actually, Sean McVay got smart and hired TWO OCs.
      .
      Aaron Kromer and Shane Waldron.

  4. Like clockwork

What’s needed is some of Grant’s usual first person training camp reports of offensive futility to put the kibosh on such rosy projections.

It’s coming, it’s coming. As inevitable as more Mueller indictments (that’s for you ?)

    Oh Grant, don’t ever change.

      1. “We” differ.

I know what. Next presser ask for a presidential style clarification.

  5. I took a few minutes to research and read the observations of other football writers on the 49er offense on day two . . .. then glanced again at Grant’s moody and frowning headline. My primary reaction? LOL, Grant. You’re already in your typical sophomore form, ho hum.

    1. +10

I don’t expect (nor want) Grant to be a homer. Objectivity and broad-view context would be welcome. Hastily-contrived hot takes run very thin.

Hot take (urban dictionary): “An opinion based on simplistic moralizing rather than actual thought. Not to be confused with a strong take.”

Hot take (merriam-webster): “A published reaction or analysis of a recent news event that doesn’t offer much in the way of deep reflection.”

Grant does generate good material here and there–very appreciated. Only wish the barbed snarks and flimsy hot takes would recede.

    2. 49er in the Anders:
Replace “already,” with “still.” It’s known as Grant’s “shtick,” something you learn to filter out

  6. Matters little I suppose…but those practice field photos with Levi’s Stadium as a backdrop reveal just how ugly the stadium exterior is. Beached oil rig.

  7. Shanny himself said this second practice pretty much sucked for the offense. But no some in here want the sugar to sweeten the bitter. The Niners ‘still’ seem to suffer from the pre snap blues and some still don’t know their assignments – that’s bad.

You guys are not going to find the staleness of utopia here at Inside the 49ers, you all should know that by now.

Grant your tone indicates that you still have a problem with Shanny wearing two hats. The big advantage to no OC is that no other team is going to pilfer OC Shanny away.

    1. Shanny wears more than two hats. He’s highly involved in personnel. He has more on his plate than just about any other coach in the NFL.

      1. He is very young and should be able to handle it. Now if mistakes become prevalent due to over extending himself then he or Lynch need to re-examine his obligations. So far it doesn’t seem to be a problem. His wife may say otherwise though.

        1. The only NFL HC who has proven he can handle all that stuff on his plate is Belichick.

          1. You can only prove by doing. It may turn out he cant handle it but so far he seems to be doing okay. Experience will eventually help a lot and you can only gather that experience by doing it. It may turn out that you are right but right now he seems to be doing just fine and getting better. Time is the teller of all tales.

            1. Really well, but his lack of experience and maturity cost him in the playoffs. He was awful against Atlanta.

  8. Every year I stick to my guns.
It’s TC and if they look like world beaters or last place Larry’s I will take it with a grain of salt.
Opening day in Minn is where I’ll really start evaluating the off-season moves, attitudes and plays they display.
    Some get so worked up.
Relax. The A’s are hot and rolling right now. ??

  9. On day 2 of training camp here is a list of things which are not concerning:
Two receivers winding up at the same spot.
Garcon and Garoppolo not on the exact same page.
    Garoppolo/Offense cadence and false starts
    Garoppolo dating habits.

If these action items are still an issue three weeks from now , it may raise an eyebrow.
