Alex Smith doesn’t sound ready

Mike Singletary suggested there was a slight possibility Alex Smith would be healthy enough to play Sunday against the Rams. After Smith spoke with reporters today, however, it appears that his chances of playing are lingering somewhere between microscopic and nonexistent.

Smith said he felt confident he could play Sunday – if, you know, he wasn’t participating in an official NFL game.

“If we weren’t hitting,” he said with a laugh. “If it was flag football.”

Smith, who hasn’t been cleared to practice, said the team’s medical
staff will determine whether he can play Sunday and he won’t meet with
doctors until “later this week.” He followed that up by saying he
wouldn’t feel prepared to play with severely limited practice time.

“I know other guys haven’t practiced in a week, practice on a Friday and
then go play. I don’t have much experience with that,” he said. “My
feeling is I think it would be pretty tough, to be honest, especially
where we’re at. We’re putting different things, obviously, each week,
and adjustments and it’s hard to pick those things up if you’re not out
there.”

Smith said he did some light throwing Monday for the first time since he
suffered a separated non-throwing shoulder on Oct. 24. He planned to
throw a bit harder today. Throwing, though, isn’t his biggest hurdle in
getting back on the field.

“As far as functioning goes, I think I could go out and run around and
throw,” he said. “I think the other part of the function is putting the
shoulder pads on and being able to sustain hits and staying out there.”
