Brock Purdy takes next step toward week one return for 49ers

Brock Purdy continues to make strides as he works to return from the torn ulnar cruciate ligament in his throwing elbow suffered during the NFC championship game in late January.

On Monday, NFL Network insider Tom Peliserro reported Purdy was heading to Jacksonville to throw over the next couple weeks with his quarterback coach and a specialist. This follows the plan laid out by the 49ers quarterback when he met with reporters on May 23.

“Yeah, we got to finish out everything through OTAs here,” said Purdy. “See how I feel, but I think the plan would be good back down to Jacksonville with my quarterback guys I trained with before the draft, Tom Gormely and Will Hewlett, as I start to throw more, and I want to just make sure my mechanics and everything are right. So go down, work with them for a couple of weeks, and then get back here.”

Purdy worked with Hewlett while preparing for the NFL draft. Meanwhile, Gormely has worked with several Major League Pitches along with NFL quarterbacks Anthony Richardson, John Wolford, along with Purdy.

Following the March 10 surgery, the timeline for a return given by the 49ers was six months, with throwing to begin three months after three months.

However, Purdy’s rehab has been ahead of schedule. The 49ers quarterback began throwing a full size football on May 29.

John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have both stated this offseason Purdy is the “leader in the clubhouse” to be the starting quarterback. To make that happen for the start of the season, Purdy will need to on the field during training camp.

“That’s what we’re hoping for, that he’ll be ready to play in week one and usually that doesn’t mean that’s the day he comes back,” said Shanahan. “Usually, you have to come before that to make that goal and that’s kind of the goal we’re hoping for and I don’t have any reason to think differently.”

  1. Hey Brock don’t rush it, hopefully you have a long career ahead of you. Being ready for the first game is not that important.

    1. He can’t hear you, but thats okay since he will naturally do everything he can to be ready because it is important. To him, the coach, the team. He doesn’t care that you want Lance to start a couple of games.

    2. OC, yes that is the biggest threat to his comeback.
Young and eager, I hope he is of sound mind when he makes decisions about his arm.

    3. Agree, Coach.
Purdy has to listen to his body more so than his competitive nature.
It’s good news that he’s recuperating ahead of schedule. But (imho), the true test will come in real game action. When he plays at the same level as he did last season. I will go all in that he’s fully healthy.

  2. Felix,
He can’t hear me? You mean he doesn’t read all of my posts? Shocking. My concern is for BP’s long term health. If you had spent anytime around athletes you would know that the best ones at every level are incredible competitors and will rush their rehab. They feel they are letting down their coach and their teammates. I want BP back at the start of camp but not if it leads to further injury. imho

    1. OC, first, he is healed. This has been talked about many times but for some reason you don’t want to believe it. He currently is just building up arm strength. Secondly, he is surrounded by a google of trainers and coaches. I’m 100% sure they know more than you. You keep pushing a narrative that makes me question where your coming from.

      1. I’m not sure what you mean by healed. Most athletes know that you are not “healed” until you are cleared for all activities. BP has not been cleared for all activities. Set backs can come at any time during the rehab process. I should know better by now you were neither an athlete or coach I can’t imagine you have taken any sports medicine classes. I am wasting my time trying to have a conversation with you.

        1. By healed, I mean what the doctors said and what Lynch and Kyle have repeated. I have played sports and still do. It would be pretty easy for me to disparage your coaching experience but I don’t need to belittle you as you do it just fine every time you post.

          1. Felix,
I have never heard Lynch/KS or any of BP’s Doctors say he is”healed” I have repeatedly heard them say he is ahead of schedule in his rehab. Go back and check I don’t think you will find the word healed once used to describe BP’s injury while I do think you will find the words ahead of schedule used often. If any of the other posters other than Felix have heard him described as healed I would love to hear from you.

      2. Felix, what is a google of trainers? I googled it and nothing came up…..

  3. Brock is a man among men. He is really something great. Unfortunately, most of the beat writers are kissing up to Trey Lance as the greatest thing since slice bread. I think that’s bogus. Brock is not yesterday’s news, despite what you might have read.

  4. I just don’t like the # 13. Wish he’d change. I guess Dan Marino and Kurt Warner got away with it but why test your luck? Maybe go with his college number – 15. I’m sure Jauan Jennings wouldn’t mind giving up #15. If he objects then cut him. Need to protect the Purdy.

      1. AES,

Look up on Youtube Stevie Wonder’s performance of “Superstitious” on Sesame Street of all places. It was freakin insane! It’s like the Children’s Television Workshop just let him and his band just cut loose! 1970’s Sesame Street was awesome…..you just don’t get good quality children’s television like that anymore.

        1. all4,
As a big Stevie Wonder and Motown fan, I will definitely check it out. My memory isn’t as sharp as it used to be, but I think that the great Morgan Freeman was on the show as well?

          1. Freeman was originally part of “The Electric Company”. HEY YOU GUYS!!!!

Johnny Cash (I don’t remember the song), Paul Simon (also don’t remember the song), Billie Joel (“Just the Way You Are”) and R.E.M. (“Furry Happy People”) had pretty good performances. If you’re a MoTown fan; Smokey Robinson did a song in the 80’s on Sesame Street. For something a bit more contemporary (last 15 years?) and poppy there’s Feist’s “1,2,3,4”. Also remember the Number Song (the one with the psychedelic pinball animation) was sung by The Pointer Sisters.

        2. Haha! I had seen SW do this song on TV, so many times, that I forgot he sung it on Sesame Street.
I watched the old YouTube video last night. And lo and behold, I actually remember watching it live (my 3 yr loved the show) when SW finished the song and came back in using the Sesame Street wording.
          Good memories.

Here’s a wow moment for me. Smoky Robinson visited my church in Manteca back in the early 2000’s. No singing, just gave his testimony.

    1. You forgot about the great 49ers #13 Steve Bono. At one time there was chatter from some fans that wanted Bono to replace Young. In 91 Young was the starter over an injured Montana but got injured during the middle of the season. In 91 Young started off 4-4. Bono went 5-1 in Young’s place and was 4th in passer rating (though despite missing 5 games Young had the top passer rating)….so that fans who were against Young for taking over for Montana jumped on the Bono bandwagon.

      1. I absolutely remember Bono. Totally forgot he wore #13. Didn’t Bono get into the 49er QB pipeline to Kansas City? Montana – Bono – Grbac??

  5. Approx. 29 days and counting until 49ers training camp begins. The big question is, is there going to be anything new to talk about between then and now? Or are we going to just continually blabber on about BP, TL and SD? Jack maybe you can just post some conversation starters. Your favorite little known 9ers. 9ers who belong in the HOF. The most exciting 9er games you ever attended. Etc……

    1. maybe favorite 49ers over history that may not be in the HOF. For me its Hacksaw Reynolds and Jeff Fuller. More recent is Jeff Garcia and Cowboy.

  6. Pat,
Justin Smith absolutely belongs in the HOF. My 3 old time 9ers are Tommy Hart, Len Rhode and Charlie Krueger. My Walsh era picks are Randy Cross, Roger Craig and Dwight Clark (Rickey Waters for his entire career) Post Walsh Era Patrick Willis, Joe Staley and Frank Gore.

  7. Question for the group….What happens if Purdy goes threw a 2nd year downturn like countless QB’s in the NFL . What happens with Lance In this scenario? He was supposedly a starter last year.(Darnold. Really?)
Seems they may be ready to move on?What does that say about Shanahan?

    1. EastCoast,
If Purdy has a serious downturn I don’t think he would start all year KS would replace him before there was no chance for a playoff season. imho
