Report: Rich Scangarello leaving 49ers. Who should replace him?

Changes to the 49ers coaching staff keep coming this offseason.

San Francisco will be looking for a new quarterbacks coach. Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Rich Scangarello has been hired to be the offensive coordinator at the University of Kentucky.

Scangarello is the sixth member of Kyle Shanahan’s offensive coaching staff to leave this offseason. Mike McDaniel left to become the Dolphins head coach, taking Jon Embree and Wes Welker with him. Butch Berry joined the Denver Broncos as their offensive line coach. And last but not least, Zach Yenser will be joining Scangarello on the Kentucky staff as their offensive line coach.

Scangarello was a member of Shanahan’s original coaching staff in San Francisco. He received praise for his work with Jimmy Garoppolo in 2017. Under the tutelage of Scangarello, Garoppolo was able to grasp enough of the playbook to lead San Francisco to five victories to end the season.

Scangarello left the 49ers following the 2018 season to become the offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos. After one season in Denver, he spent 2020 as a senior offensive assistant with Philadelphia. He returned to San Francisco in 2021.

The first name that comes to mind as a potential replacement for Scangarello is John Beck.

There is familiarity for Beck with Kyle Shanahan’s system. The two have a relationship which dates to their time as quarterback and coach in Washington.

Beck, a well-known personal quarterback’s coach, is expected to be working with Trey Lance in Southern California this offseason making for an easy transition.

This wouldn’t be the first time Beck coached one of the players he worked with in the offseason. Beck joined the New York Jets staff and quarterback Zach Wilson last October.

The move paid off as Wilson showed improvement following his return from a strained PCL in his right knee.

Through his first six games of the season Wilson had posted a quarterback rating of 63.5 with four touchdowns and nine interceptions. Working with Beck every day, Wilson improved his rating to 75.2 and threw only two interceptions over the final seven games of the season.

Having Beck and Lance work together throughout the offseason and continuing the relationship during training camp and into the season would go a long way toward ensuring Lance is ready for 2022.

    1. He might have been the first QB taken..but I doubt he’d be #1 overall, since Jacksonville took Trevor Lawrence last year

  1. Where’s BAY? Why isn’t he/she hoisting the banner to make Sackorpick the replacement for Scangarello?

  2. The drama of the offseason. I browsed 49er twitter and Kittle was trending.

3 hours ago Grant : The #49ers should trade George Kittle as soon as possible

1 hour ago Jack Hammer: Trading George Kittle would be almost as bad as trading DeForest Buckner. #49ers

      1. Grant is working to be as controversial with 9er fans, as his Dad was during the DeBartollo-Walsh era…..it ain’t really working

      2. The “trade Kittle ” justification was that his his receiving numbers dont justify his 16 M salary. This is of course is shortsighted. Kittle is the best blocking TE in the league. He is a Tackle who catches 75+ passes for 1000 yards per season. He also regularly draws double and even triple coverage which leaves Deebo and Aiyuk with 1-1 coverage. In the video below kittle is double and triple teamed (freeze at 03, 04, 05 ) leaving Jennings wide open for a TD.

    1. Grant Cohn is nothing more than a shock jock who says outrageous things for clicks. He doesn’t care if you berate him or call his parents names as long as you engage. You click, he wins. For me, I just don’t engage in his silliness. To do so, is to guarantee more stupidity. Unfortunately, in our society his schtick can be profitable. Fox Sports entire lineup is riddled with Grant Cohns. Unbearable to watch.

  3. Kittle and Juice ( sounds like the name of an ’80’s buddy cop movie) are the cogs that make our offense go! They are what make it unique and elite! Other teams have 5 blockers , we have 7! K & J block so well that it rubs off on the Wr’s, Like Jennings and Bourne before him….even BA will block you! They are the key to our running game, weather its Deebo or some random Rb! As Rollo said, Kittle is like having and extra tackle on the field… who is good for 1k yards receiving and consistently draws double and triple teams.

Grant is a nerd who never played the sport and doesn’t understand the intangibles. This is why my original email address is still blocked here…..for pointing this out! Lmao ! he can read a spread sheet and a stat sheet …..and see clear discrepancies……but these pencil pusher types cant fathom things like leadership, versatility and intelligence/knowledge of a system…… This year Trent Williams has the highest rating on PFF of any O-linemen ever, but we made him the highest paid last year. We payed a little extra for his leadership. We pay Juice and Kittle for versatility…….JG is ranked around 20 when you rank Qbs simply on stats or physical talent……..but his leadership and character are top 5……combine it all and JG is a qb id rank around 10-15, factor in his age vs some of the younger guys….and id be fine putting him 15. The trade market will develop….

    1. The old saying..”Stats are for losers”, holds true here..Grants constant banter about JG and how he costs the 9ers is tiring..I really think that Grant and JG ran into each other at some point in time, Grant tried to buddy up, and JG told him to pound salt..

  4. Forgetting Grant, this is a rules question.

If John Beck is working with Tray Lance in the off season, and the 49ers want to add John Beck to the staff do they have to time it so that they can maximize their time together this off season. Am I right that if they hire Beck he would only be able to work with Lance during official practice events.

Maybe bring him on staff at the start of preseason camp, after he has worked with Lance all the other available time.

    1. @ht I find this post to be fascinating. So many different possibilities. Could Beck form his own LLC (I assume he probably already has this in place) and train Trey Lance in the offseason even if he is hired as a coach for the 49ers? Probably need to work some magic on effective dates and perhaps some language authorizing Beck to operate a separate company outside his 49er contract. Lance would need to pay for the services and Beck would likely need other customers paying for his service as well. It’s an obvious circumvention of the NFL coaching calendar but seems like there should be some legal loophole that could be exploited. Not sure what the NFL QB coach salary range is but denying an employee the chance at additional income during the offseason seems inappropriate. I think of it like a police officer. Law Enforcement routinely works additional jobs while wearing their uniform. City or county pays the officer and then he/she is allowed to make additional income. Why not NFL coaches?

    2. HT,

You are correct. Hiring Beck now would limit his time with Lance to official practices. Waiting until just before training camp would work.

      1. If Beck is good I like that plan. Thanks for the reply.

Do quarterback coaches have a real off season?

  5. Grant’s become a clown but I do check in from time to time to see what a few of his guests are saying, including Jack. Vish, although a college student, I find quite inciteful. Also Naylor, Crocker and Sybylla. I assume Jack, Naylor and Crocker come on because Grant’s youtube subscribers stand at 46,000.

    1. Grants latest post is about how it’s Paraags fault that our secondary is bad because he refuses to pay for better talent. I know he can’t be that stupid so it’s just more click bait. I occasionally read some of his posts but I never listen to his on air sessions because i can’t stand to look at him.

      1. What bothers me the most about Grant is that Lowell would never do journalism the way Grant does.

        1. I suppose Grant has to do what he needs to do feed his family.

I never liked his style and I stopped reading his columns a year before he left this blog– I’d jump straight to the comments.

Considering that there are many excellent podcasters and columnists writing on the Niners (from HAM and Crock to The Athletic staff), I continue to be surprised that folks still keep on bringing up Grant’s outrageous takes.
