SANTA CLARA — Check out my Periscope report for Sunday’s training camp practice. I will post a detailed breakdown of the good and not so good from today, so stay tuned.

  1. Appologies for the broken record… But the win totals depend on the injury rate. The team needs one or two more FA/Drafts to build enough depth to threaten post season while losing multiple starters.

In the four years 2014-2017 the 49ers have had worse than average starters losing playing time due to injuries. They had devestating injuries before 2014, but not the overwhelming numbers 2014-2017.

To get 10+ wins, the team needed not only less injuries… but a complete 180, with better than average injury rates because the depth just isn’t there yet.

I’m a long term optimist. I’m confident the team will be better than last year. Excited to see this really cool offense hum. But it will take more than two years of rebuild to threaten post season.

It took 7 FA/Drafts to build the 2011 roster. A three to four year rebuild is a reasonable expectation.

  2. Sounds like Garnett is probably going to be released with an injury settlement. D. J. Jones might be ready to take over for Williams. Glad to hear Thomas is doing ok. Looking forward to seeing Cooper in the next game. Jimmy gives this team a shot at 9 wins, but 6-8 is probably more realistic. These next 3 weeks will be very interesting. PUP/Suspensions, Trades, and other teams cast offs could make for a couple of surprise players at the end of the roster.

    1. I believe I am the 7tth player so I am in, thought we were going with our web name, I guess I need to come up with a creative name, ironically my other two leagues I am in, my team name is rebelscum. Thank you razoreater, going to be fun to be in a league with you!

    2. I believe Garnett telegraphed he was angling for an injury settlement some time ago. It was when he came back after missing a day ( could have been more ) of practice. He sat on the sidelines for a while then got up stood a while and sat right down again, That was a sign he was deciding what to do. Return to practice or not. If he was really injured that indecision would not have been there.

If he came back he was pretty sure he would get cut. If he sits out he might get an injury settlement and perhaps some sort of contract with a different team later.

  3. Just days ago we appeared deep at RB…now, perhaps, not so deep. Hoping for a clear MRI.

    1. Could still be a mcl or acl tear. Wow, big opportunity for joe Williams, may just be a better game player than practice player like he showed at Utah.

  4. Grant,
Colbert seemed to have sideline to sideline range in the games he played last year. Do you think he has lost a step? As to coaches saying they have to see the film before they can comment, thats been going on since Edison invented moving pictures. One of the oldest football coaching jokes is the one about the football coach who got married, He was gone for a couple of weeks and when he got back one of his assistants asked him, how was the honeymoon? He said I don’t know I have to look at the film.

  5. With McKinnon going down, doubtful we will see him until opening day. Which means Jeremy McNichols should get more touches. The attrition rates is high for these small backs. They should have grabbed Roc Thomas, a kid I touted before and after the Draft. UDFA sparkled for Minnesota last night taking a screen pass 78 yards to the house..

  6. Grant, Niners had only one pre snap penalty against the Cowboys, for what its worth that is a marked improvement for any game in the last three or so years. That and injuries are the only thing I take away from that first pre season game. However the next game they could resort back to their old ways. Pre snap – drive killers for the offense, and drive extender for the defense.

  7. The injuries keep piling up. Good news is none appear to be long term.

I have been saying expectations for this team are unreasonably high for a while. There are reasons for optimism and hope, sure, but to expect the team to be fighting for the playoffs at the end of the season is a bit much for me. Year 2 of a massive rebuild and a team that was 1-10 last year.

    1. Looks like we need one more successful draft and off-season to replace the often injured and finalize backup positions.

      I predict a 8-8 season….no playoffs

  8. Don’t forget Jimmie Ward

Ward had a great diving pass break up on a Garoppolo pass intended for Pierre Garconduring move the ball drills. While he didn’t have such a great game facing the Cowboys, he is still touted as one of the best defensive backs on the team by his coaches. This play reminded us why.
