Prediction: Packers defeat 49ers

The Packers will beat the 49ers Sunday, 34-23.

The Packers are going to double-team both Justin and Aldon Smith. The left guard and center – T.J. Lang and Jeff Saturday – will take Justin Smith, and the left tackle and running back – Marshall Newhouse and Cedric Benson – will take Aldon Smith.

Aaron Rodgers will have enough time to find open receivers and exploit the 49ers secondary, which is ordinary without the two Smiths’ pressure.

The Packers will jump out to an early lead and Alex Smith will have to pass the ball, but he won’t be able to keep up with Rodgers. Smith will have a good game by his standards, but the offense will only score two touchdowns and three field goals – not enough against Green Bay.

Randy Moss will catch two passes. Michael Crabtree will catch seven to lead the 49ers. Vernon Davis will be double-covered most of the game and held in check.

That’s how I see it happening. What’s your prediction?

I predict the number of people who waste time reading anything you write will decrease.

  2. 49ersROK says:

This is strictly to create controversy and bar you from ever getting good player or coach interviews.

    • msclemons67 says:

The entire planet is picking the Packers. How is Grant’s pick controversial in any way, shape or form?

      • Drew says:

It’s not so much controversial as it is ignorant. 4 blockers for 2 guys?! Yeah that would work out real well for Green Bay. Predicting catch totals?! Make a prediction on the score but leave it at that. This only furthers the idea that Grant has a low football IQ.

    • Arjinca says:

      Runs ifn the family

      • Medic One says:

What I think is disappointing is that there are all these new names saying the same thing about Grant. The lack of personal integrity and courage is really disappointing. If you don’t like what Grant has to say, that’s ok, but to hide behind a “new” screen name to support your idiocracy is childish.
Man up, put your real name behind your commen,t and leave it to one comment. You aren’t fooling anyone here by using the imagination you didn’t have in your comment to make up new names.

      • DS94everXev says:

        @medic

Actually a lot of these names have shown up before to take shots at Grant on a personal level. So I don’t think we have a split persoonality double poster here.

  3. Tim says:

The 49ers will win this game 31-21. Packers defense sucks and will struggle against our offense. Our defense will get a couple of turnovers and a couple of stops and we will win by 10.

  4. Sputnik says:

I think you are 100% right niners for what ever reason just don’ t play them well …….. It’s all ways the niners falling behind and plying catch up like I said Grant this game is on the 8 year vet Alex smith shoulders , I bleave that qb is the most important player on the field .

  5. msclemons67 says:

The 49ers defense will hold the Pack under 30. The offense is what it is.

    Packers 24 – 49ers 19

The wild card is special teams – a return TD could flip this in the 49ers favor.

  6. neal says:

I will let you know by 4:30 tomorrow.

  7. ribico says:

(re-post from te other thread. You are late, GC! ;)

Tomorrow’s a big game no doubt. How do either of these teams play in big games? Nothing bigger than the playoffs. Last year Niners scratched and clawed for two full games against top-notch opponents, falling short of the SB by one play. Green Bay? Forget 15-1, they completely collapsed in their own house like a cardboard suitcase at the first sight of defensive pressure.

Niners have had a full offseason and TC to implement the Harbaugh system. Even at last year’s disadvantage I say Niners would have beaten the Pack in the playoffs. Niners upgraded their offense over off-season, supposedly GB addressed their woeful defense. Niners did the better job – 31-21 Niners.

  8. David says:

So the packers are going to use 4 players to block 2? What about brooks , willis , mcdonald? I’m not saying niners are a lock to win but you cant double block 2 players allday long and expect to put up 34 points , and if Harbaugh comes up with a good off game plan we can keep rogers on the bench which is where he needs to be

    • Adam707 says:

With 4 blocking 2 (the smiths) that will leave the RG and RT to block any other rushers. Niners will rush 3 and drop 8 many times this game. So it will be up to Mcdonald or brooks to beat their one on ones. Don’t expect to see many blitz tomorrow. Rodgers toast teams that try to blitz. Have to get pressure with three or 4 rushing.

      • Chris says:

Great point. GB will spread SF out which will also limit any blitzes. At the end of the day, even if SF loses this game, it’s just one game.

  9. Drew says:

Grant, you never cease to amaze me. This is soooooooo idiotic. You’re predicting catch totals now?! Based off of what exactly? They ran the ball the whole time in the preseason. Every other beat reporter says how interested they are in seeing what the offense looks like and how they utilize their new weapons. But I’ll email them and tell them that Grant Cohn already knows!!! Wait for the game. You want to make a prediction about the score… fine. But leave it at that.

  10. ribico says:

    >>Aaron Rodgers will have enough time to find open receivers

Even down 2 players with that double doubleteam? And our team speed on Defense? This I’ll have to see.

  11. LSX says:

It’s not 2011 anymore, Akers won’t be kicking 83 field goals a game. The optimist in me predicts a 49ers win, 30-27 in OT. If Rodgers gets hurt (I have a feeling he will at some point this season) the 49ers win 27-13.

The pessimist side of me still has a bad feeling about playing in Lambeau. I have a gut feeling that the 49ers lose 31-16 but I’m probably wrong.

There you go, three different predictions. I still expect the 49ers to go to the Super Bowl, but a Week 1 loss in Lambeau wouldn’t surprise me.

  12. cutitoff says:

there is not two players on the Packers d that could hold Vernon in check. He smoked their best db(woodson) several times last time they played. If they use Woodson and another defender that leaves another Niners playmaker in single coverage. Rodgers will hardly have the ball with the Niners power running game. Niners 24 GB 17

    • msclemons67 says:

True that Vernon Davis smoked the Packers last time. He had 4 catches for 126 yards and a TD.

Troy Smith was the QB though and the 49ers lost 34-16.

      Not a great example.

    • JDilla says:

His point is it doesn’t matter who the QB is, Vernon Davis cannot be held in check. Case in point, Saints and Giants game in playoffs. I remember a few specific players on the Giants saying they were going to shut down VD and what do you know? He scores two TDs. Don’t know why I come here to read Grant’s analysis either. Probably because I am waiting for him to actually write something that makes sense, but he never lets me down. Secretly I wish his reasoning for these articles was to provide bulletin board material for motivation, but I just can’t believe it, the hate is much more deeply rooted. You can predict the score, Grant, but like people on here have said, catch totals? Give me a break. You come off as an arrogant blow heart. No mention at all of packers defense, which includes at least 3 rookie starters. Yeah, I’ll take the 49ers any day against that. 27-20

      • angusinCanada says:

blow heart? Um, if you’re going to take personal shots, learn to use the English language, nincompoop.

  13. Sputnik says:

I agree 100% Grant niners never Play them well, they all ways fall behind and have to play catch up , this game is all on the 8 year vets shoulders, Alex most make play great ……Qb is with out a doubt the most important player on a football field, if it was not case they would not dominate the votes in the super bowls, and in MVP of the year votes

  14. STKNINER says:

I want to thank Grant for his help. If everyone will take the time to realize that this will motivate our team to a win. Coach likes this kind of talk; remember last year coach was thanking reports for this kind of talk. So again thanks Grant

    • angusinCanada says:

He should probably thank the betting public and Vegas as well then? Pack are favourites, Grant picked the favourite, big deal.
I’m about to place my money on the niners, and I’ll gladly take the points!

  15. Reggie says:

The odds say the Packers win, but I’m not going to go by the odds. I trust that Harbaugh and Co. will have the team prepared. Win or lose, the niners won’t let the Packers take it easily.

The schedule makers were cruel, thats for sure. I think if this game was week 3 or 4, the odds would be greater on the Niners winning. Losing the game will have the same impact when we lost to the Cowboys in week 2….Nothing!

  16. marcus says:

49ers all the way u guys got to be kidding.49er nation

  17. fesnyc says:

for what its worth…i think Rodgers is incredibly talented…but i’m hoping that he/they are a bit rusty coming out of the blocks. we totally shut down their run game.

i think Harbaugh/Roman are worth a few points, even if GB coaches are also very good.

Moss and VD are a potent combination, and Alex uses them with some effectiveness. Gore, Hunter, et al are effective on the ground.

going to go with my heart as much as my head on this one and say Niners 27, GB 24. but i wouldnt suggest Grant’s conclusion is ill considered.

can’t wait for tomorrow. Go Niners!!

  18. Adam707 says:

Hilarious how some of you tools are jumping down Grants throat because he is simply giving his unbiased opinion. All experts and analysts are picking the packers. If grant does everything just to please us then this blog would be boring. I do disagree with him, and think niners will win, but I won’t insult the guy. I’m not immature like so many of you. This blog has been so sad lately. So much drama I feel like I’m back in high school.

    • MidWestNiner says:

One of the reasons I don’t visit it as often.

    • msclemons67 says:

Hating what is popular/successful is common on the internet.

It’s a way to compensate for being unknown and useless.

    • longtime49erfan says:

Actually, it is Grant who is the tool, or rather, troll here. He intentionally posts negative comments about the 49ers to stir up readers. It amazes me why people continue to read his posts; it amazes me why I read any of his posts anymore. He is not a fan; he is not a reporter; he is not a journalist. He is a troublemaker who does what his daddy tells him; that is, say something controversial just for the sake of it. If he really believed half of what he wrote then he would bet on some of it, which he won’t do. The 49ers might lose, but I would bet they will win this game. Grant would not do the same. He is pointless, witless, and should probably get a job working at the local McDonalds, where the work would be about what his intelligence can handle..

      • Adam707 says:

He posts his personal opinion about the niners, which is what he is paid to do. He has said many times he is not a fan, which gives us a better inside look, in my opinion. When people are fans of a time their opinions are bias and irrelevant.

  19. MidWestNiner says:

I’m not seeing how your scenario of blocking both Smiths will work unless the RB and FB hardly play. Otherwise Rodgers will have little option in the passing game.

    • MidWestNiner says:

Scratch that. I see the part about Benson now. But I still don’t see this scenario happening.

    • msclemons67 says:

It’s doable but it really doesn’t match the Packers’ philosophy. They like to have 5 men out in pass patterns.

If the Pack does go max protect to double the Smiths that will just show how much respect the league has for the 49ers D-Line

      • Calistoga Red says:

But don’t Justin Smith and Aldon Smith often line up on the same side? I can’t see double teaming them both, that would leave the other side completely exposed.

      • Coffee's for closers says:

Should I assume from your name that you live in Calistoga?

  20. Coffee's for closers says:

I agree with your end result prediction, and the score is probably pretty close as well.

I do strongly disagree with the suggestions about the Smith’s being double teamed, not that they wont be but I just cant see the scenario you describe happening. Justin lines up from what I’ve seen at either the 3 or 5 technique. Even if he’s playing the 3 he’s still pretty much need to shoot the A gap for the center to really have much of a chance to participate in a double team. If he’s at the 5 then the center trying to double team with the guard would be fruitless. The tackle and the running back both taking Aldon is more plausible but it requires Aldon to pretty much only bull rush from the outside, if he spins or makes any kind of inside move the double running back will be less likely to engage him as well with the other blockers in the way.

But lets say this scenario does happen. The LG and C both take Justin and the LT and RB take Aldon. Well you’ve pretty much opened up the entire left side of the line for either of the two ILB’s or either of the S’s to come and destroy Aaron, who’s left to block them? The RG and RT will have Sopoaga and Fields so the only left to stop the ILB’s or Safeties is a fullback and you’re still a blocker short.

Most likely the first time the guard and center try to double team Justin they will shift the line away from it. Force the packers to try and run to the right instead of pass.

    • Coffee's for closers says:

Forgot to add to the first paragraph. Even if Justin is lined up at the 3 spot, he’s still more likely to play the B gap which is a pretty tall order to ask a Center to help out with. He either needs the guard to shift over so the center can take the right side of Justin or he needs to be able to run around the guard to stop Justin from rushing to the outside.

  21. Sputnik says:

It’s on the road in the loudest stadium in the league , bar none those fans make a difference , I have seen so many times where they get the packers back in the game , it’s simple niners get that same fire they had against the saint’s beat the crap out of them at the line and play angry football they win I’m so sick of GB I loath them more than any team , it’s time to stop the bleeding .

    • Ceadderman says:

Qwest Field is the loudest. 9ers got no worries about “crowd noise” headed into Lambeau that they haven’t dealt with every season since the place was built. If they can win at Qwest, they can win anywhere. )_(

    • 23jordan says:

      Sputnik,

It is not loud in Lambeau. Quest is Seattle and Kansas City are loud. They play music to keep the crowd in the game at Lambeau. Crowd noise is no factor. Home field advantage with backup referees in the biggest problem the Niners have tomorrow.

  22. JJ says:

You obviously don’t know much about the Niners Defense that held Drew Brees to 17 pts in 55 minutes of football. GB doesn’t have the weapons Brees has. I see a 21-17 win for SF.

    • angusinCanada says:

You mean the game where brees threw for over 440 yards?

      • ribico says:

angus, just goes to show the misdirected love sent towards stats like passing yards.

      • DS94everXev says:

        Angus

That was DB who didn’t lose his cool despite being made into a crash dummie by our D.

This is AR who didn’t rspond like DB. Despite every variable being in his favor (refs/fans/Giant D not as good as Niner D) he didn’t do a thing to bring his team bac.

    Forty Niners destroy the Packers

  24. ninerfan says:

Bottom line is they have the best QB in the league and we have a pedestrian QB at the helm. I will be yelling and screaming for the niners to win, but with our weakness at the most important position, I don’t see it happening. A. Smith will miss multiple opportunities with Moss wide open down the field because he doesn’t want to take the chance, just watch.

    • Ceadderman says:

The Front Office called. They want you to turn your fan card and all your jerseys in at the next available opportunity.

I can’t believe how many people who have ZERO heart after witnessing the last 2 games that Smith turned in. Smith was NOT the problem in either of them. But yet he did a convincing job against the Aints and the Smurfs within TWO Special Teams turnovers that Harbs doesn’t want to talk about anymore. Not that I blame him for that. It’s a new Season and already people have a gaping hole in their chests where they willingly allow their heart to be removed without a fight.

Go away. I don’t care if you preface it with “I’ll be there on the 50 with my Bullhorn cheering on Alex Smith the whole time”…

      You got NO heart. None.

9ers gonna Win 27-20 with the Defense keeping Rodgers out of the End Zone to finish the game.

Rodgers WILL be wearing a Red 49er #11 Jersey After the Game or on Monday.

  25. Clay says:

Grant, please stop covering the 9ers. Your liberal brand of media coverage is played out. You are no more than knock off version of a WWE villain, move to NY and hate on Tebow like the rest of the liberal east coast media. Love always 9ER FAITHFUL .

  26. Ceadderman says:

“The Packers are going to double-team both Justin and Aldon Smith. The left guard and center – T.J. Lang and Jeff Saturday – will take Justin Smith, and the left tackle and running back – Marshall Newhouse and Cedric Benson – will take Aldon Smith.”

So that alone will stop the Pass Rush?…

    AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA… AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

You had me going there for a minute, what a great April Fool’s joke… oh wait… you mean it don’t you? O_O Grant my friend you done lost your marbles.

Did you not learn ANYTHING about Justin Smith last year? The man is relentless, he’ll take down the QB as well as the guy that is on him. Put some little guy on him and that guy is gonna be like Toilet Paper coming out of a dirty gas station’s facilities. Stuck to Smith’s shoe. Even if they double either Smith that leaves Icebox to clog the middle. You can’t stop it. You can only hope that it buys Rodgers enough time to find the hot read. Did you learn nothing? >_>

    • msclemons67 says:

Did you watch the Broncos game? That’s exactly how Denver neutralized the Smith’s and gave Manning time to shred the secondary.

Being a fan is great. Being a blind kool-aid drinker is a bit ridiculous.

      • Razoreater says:

I saw that pre season game. Puh-lease, this game is do or die, win or cry. Justin Smith won’t be crying I can promise you that.

      • I.P. Daily says:

And you think the Niners gave two squats about that game? -LLL-

      • Ceadderman says:

In PRESEASON without a full staff on the field running a Vanilla Defense. Yeah I saw it. So what? This is now the Regular season with only Haralson being off the field.

I’d wish the Pack good luck if they intend to implement that but… ^_^

      • Ceadderman says:

And btw I’ve NEVER been a blind KoolAid drinker. Nor should I ever be accused of being one. I got run off the WebZone because I had the balls to stand up to the Loonies who don’t have enough knowledge to know what they are looking at.

I don’t like KoolAid. Give me JD and Guinness and gtfo my way. xD

      • msclemons67 says:

Denver showed the scheme is possible. Do I think it will work against a motivated Justin? Of course not. The Last American Badass will destroy it.

But ridiculing Grant for suggesting a scheme that has already been used against the 49ers is typical fanboi behavior. There’s a difference between rooting for a team and being a blind cultist.

      • Ceadderman says:

I ridicule out of love with the intent to teach.

There is no way Fangio runs a vanilla Defense against Rodgers in the Regular season. Don’t forget also that Manning was out of the game early and pretty much only saw 2nd teamers. Smith was out of the game with a hip contusion that he sustained the game before. I seriously doubt that he’ll let that keep him off the field in Regular season. Nevermind that the League made full pads mandatory in the Offseason. ;)

      • AlbertS says:

Aldon was double-teamed by the medical staffers in the Broncos game. LOL

      • Prime Time says:

Miss Lemons, what’s wrong with having blind faith in a sports team? Better to escape reality than to take this stuff too serious and dissect it piece by piece.

        MSC,

Yes, you’re right, being a blind Kool-Aid drinker is a bit ridiculous [BTW, I'm not saying that you are, Ceadderman].

What is it when someone uses something that happened in a preseason game as the basis for an opinion on what’s going to happen in a regular season game?

      • undercenter says:

M67, you forgot the most important one the Yorks.

      • msclemons67 says:

      • ribico says:

        >>I’d wish the Pack good luck if they intend to implement that but… ^_^

Yuppers. We can only hope Packers staff was snookered into utilizing a tactic that have some success in a meaningless game against players who are not playing today. Go for it, McCarthy/Cohn!

  27. I agree says:

While I agree with Grant’s thesis, I think it would be more accurate to say that the Packers will double Ald. Smith and J. Smith, but not simultaneously. I see the Pack doubling J. Smith on running downs and Ald. Smith on passing downs. BTW – Grant doesn’t mention the role of the Packer TEs. I think Rodgers will be throwing to them alot since A. Smith does not cover TEs very well. I see a close game, but the Niners lose. The Niner pass defense gets exposed, and Alex Smith fails to man up on third and long again.

    • Ceadderman says:

Smith doesn’t cover the TE usually. Depending on where the TE lines up and who is the PR Backer, that Responsibility is for Brooks, Bowman and Willis and sometimes Grant when he spells Bowman or Willis. All 4 of those guys are solid in coverage. :)

Smith is going to be doing more but I think they’ll only have him cover TEs’ when absolutely necessary, since it would leave a gaping hole on his side of the field for Screen, Pitch and Toss plays with Benson in this upcoming game. Watch for Bam Bam to cover the Middle, Bowman to drop into Coverage on the TE and Smith to Rush the Passer. This would allow Bam Bam to drop into the void left by Smith in those instances of Play Action which WILL be used on Sunday since it was designed to take advantage of overzealous Defenses. Our guys are disciplined and hard nosed. :D

  28. Tucson9er says:

Just an outside thought, and I find it strange no beat writer hasn’t written something like this, but statistically speaking there has to be an expiration on how long a win streak continues. We haven’t beaten GB in Lambeau since something like 1994 or 6, so much like Vegas you’ll hit blackjack or roll 7′s eventually. I realize there’s no football analysis in my statement, but Yankees don’t always go to the Series, Mike Tyson eventually got KO’d, Tiger went to hell on the course. Packers are daunting, but maybe there time is up, regardless of Rogers. Grant, I know its probably to late, but would it difficult to find a statistic that shows ends of win streaks?

    • Jason says:

So you’re saying the Packers will get tired running up and down the field on us scoring points and that in the 4th quarter we’ll take advantage of being down 91 points and come back to win?
Sounds like I don’t need to turn the game on until the 4th quarter.

  29. I.P. Daily says:

    41-9 Niners…

  30. AHHHH says:

grant how did i know that not only u wud predict wel lose but knew exactly what ur first sentence wud be. cuz all u wanna post is bold, attention grabbing, controversial stuff to get views. come on

  31. Mason says:

So the center is going to let Soap run right by him as he runs two bodies to his left to block Smith? Cool… sounds good to me. Stunt up the middle or right will be open all day, since the right side of the line will be tasked with stopping Soap and Mac. Even a straight blitz by Brooks will get through untouched.

I’m not worried about Rodgers having enough time to pick apart the defense. He won’t. He will be running for his life the entire game. Our secondary just needs to keep his big play receivers in check. That’s what will hurt us. Seeing the QB scramble and losing sight of your coverage.

And I’m not worried about the Niners scoring enough points in this game. The pack has 3, maybe 4 good players on D. We can run AND throw on them all day.

    • Grant Cohn says:

The Packers are going to make the Niners plays nickel defense most of the game.

      • Razoreater says:

Vics gonna play Big Nickel with 5DBs at all times and sometimes 6.

      • Mason says:

Changes nothing. Mac and Brooks can shed one vs one blocking all day, and if we send Bowman or Willis, they’ll come through untouched.

      • Jons Niners says:

you do realize grant that if the 49ers control the ball and clock against the packers they will win, the packers has the worst defense ever besides the saints….a few doses of gore and hunter keeping rodgers off the field….if rodgers is not on the field he can not throw tds…but keep going you unprofessional writer

  32. Sputnik says:

This needs to be said agin the ref’s in GREENBAY are DISPICABLE evrey one saw the ref’s spot GREENBAY 14 points in the playoffs GB’s line will hold all day and won’t get called ,and every time the ball hits the ground the hole offense will look for the flag , guarnted no crying here just the facts .

I will root hard for the Niners, but I do expect to lose my bet with my GB friend.

However, the trends we may spot starting that may develop into the stories of this season are what is important in this game.

    ST…Has Kyle Williams learned?
DEF…Will A Smith be good as an every down player…will all the energy he expends hurt his pass rushing?…will we still get big turnovers?
OFF…Will the line improve enough to allow us to do better on 3rd down…how will the coaches use the new receivers…will we do better on 3rd down…in the RZ…will Kaep in the Wildcat be big?
OVERALL…Will we get away with a normal amount of injuries or will this be one of those years in which injuries really hamper a team…will the backups step up the way L Grant did last year when injuries occur?

    • DS94everXev says:

      @dr

I get why some think CK in the redzone can be more dangerous than AS. Runs faster/throws harder.

But keep in mind the red zone is really hard due to the fact the defenders are all locked in their really tightly. Passes which would be complete on the40 arebatted down. Runs that would gain 20 gain 6.

The QB has to make the right read and quickly. CK is a LOT more likely to throw an Int in there than AS is. So instead of complaints about FG, we get nothing.

Plus there is the whole TO battle determines the winner better than yards do thing to be concerned about.

  34. TIM says:

Grants prediction that GB will double team both Smiths is just plain silly, but we expect that from Grant, sad to say.
We have not defeated the Pack in GB in about 22 years…SO IT’S TIME !!!
Rodgers has a bet that if the Niners beat him he will wear an Alex Smith Jersey all next week !!! That would be classic to see Rodgers doing tv interviews with a Smith Jersey on ,lol !!!
If it happens, don’t get too excited, just because you see him in a Niners Jersey doesn’t mean there was a trade ;).
    GO NINERS !!!

    • Neal says:

Green Bay had a pretty bad pre-season on top of a pretty bad lost with the Giants last year. Our defense is going to win this game, maybe not with interceptions but we will put a ton of pressure on AR.

    • Ceadderman says:

Tim you are now my Hero. I remember back in the day when you an I didn’t see eye to eye. Man that seems like it was so long ago after the season our boys had last year.

Even Jerry(GOAT) seems to be more open about the ability of this team. I love it! :D

  35. Erich says:

Let me get this straight.. the packers will put 4 blockers on 2 guys.. that leaves 5 players to block the rest and catch the ball.. meaning that the niners could drop 7 to cover 4 receivers and only rush 4 to get blocked by 6 players. that means that the niners could almost double cover every single WR .. even Rodgers would have problems throwing the ball under those circumstances. Grant is underestimating brooks and middle LB blitzes from Willis or bowman

    • Ceadderman says:

Yuppers. 2 hats on 1 hat is a good move when it’s primarily one guy you double. Not so much when there are 4 solid Pass Rushers attacking your Line. All you can do is hope that your Protection can give you time to get rid of the Ball for positive yardage before you get whacked. Justin Smith has shown that he will go through the Blocker to get ya. Aldon Smith plays Peak-a-boo with the QB (i.e. Pittsburgh Game) as he’s pushing the Blocker back into his lap and those guys generally Rush from the same side.

So now you have 4 hats on 2 on the to give your LT some help? So much for the QB’s safety valve. There’ll be NOBODY there to keep him upright should Brooks, Whitner, or Rodgers get into their Backfield. Hell I’d Safety Blitz him all day and have Brooks stay home with one of the MLBs’ dropping into Coverage.

Rodgers would be Ground Beef by the 3rd Quarter. Why would you even go into a Dime or Nickel Package with that kind of Pass Protection Scheme to exploit. While 4 hats are busy worrying about 2 players I’ll send a Safety on that side with them and mix it up with a few Robber Stunts to really muck with any draw play they scheme when they get tired of scraping Rodgers off the iceless tundra. xD

Do eet McCarthy doooooooo eeet! xD

  36. Grant says:

Grant, you will write anything to get feedback!

  37. DS94everXev says:

    Grant

Earlier you said GB will spread us out with multi WR’s. How much 2 teaming can you do on 2 DL and still have 3-4 WR’s?

    • BigP says:

3 defensive linemen. 5 offensive linemen. The tackle and running back block Aldon, and the guard and center block (in theory) Justin. That leaves the two offensive linemen man-on-man with the two remaining defensive linemen. That leaves Rodgers with up to four possible receiving targets.

      • Brotha Tuna says:

Yeah, but Mac & Brooks can make some plays 1v1, and that’s if we’re not bringing PW/NB once in a while. Vic has options. AR & Co are dangerous, but let’s see what we can get done.

      • DS94everXev says:

If a RB chips on JS/AS, there is nobody left to pick up any blitzing player. You really want to expose your Franchise QB to an untouched Niner defender? It only takes 1 hit. AR can avoid it 9/10. Only takes 1 hit to end the Pack season.

      • BigP says:

I agree. I’m explaining how the Packers can spread it out while double teaming the Smith’s. It doesn’t mean Rodgers won’t get hit or that they will execute, but that is what the Packers do, they attack the defense. Taking away their running game doesn’t really hurt them because they don’t run very often as it is. They present a very unique challenge. I can’t wait for the game to start.

      • BigP says:

My response was to Brotha Tuna’s post. DS, I understand what your saying, but they face that type of situation frequently. Rodgers gets blitzed quite often because they pass so often. Yes, one hit can end a players season but that goes for anybody. They don’t always spread it out, but Rodgers has great pre-snap recognition and is very good at beating the blitz. I expect them to put Rodgers in the gun and throw a lot of short and medium range passes and take the shot when he sees something he likes. It will be interesting to see how the Niners game plan for them.

  38. Jons Niners says:

This article coming from a raiders fan…if you double justin smith and aldon who is going to block mcdonald, sapoaga, willis, bowman, and brooks? your prediction has no logic. double them and i will send bowman right up the gut every play…if you dont think he can do it, just remember he shut vick down from escaping him. So let me guess you predicted your raiders to go 12-4 and winning the afc west right, what a joke. can we get a real reporter/writer/journalist instead of a booty itcher please

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Too Harsh, Jons. WAYYYY tooooo harsh! But I get it; its almost Game Day! OOOOh-RAH!

      • Jons Niners says:

Its true, this is my first time reading a press democrat article in a while, I clicked the link hoping they had finally replaced this guy, but I was wrong and he is still here writing non sense. The 49ers control the clock and they win, Green Bays offense can not score if they are over there on the bench watching gore and hunter run all over there horrible defense. the reason why Green Bay defense had so many turn overs were because the teams they played had to play catch up and throw the whole game, which in turn they threw a lot of INTs. Those teams do not have a defense or run game like the 49ers do. I remember this grant guy calling Aldon A bust the second we drafted him, then when we took Jenkins over the TE from Stanford he said Jenkins was a bust. This guy wanted the 49ers to draft the players he predicted them drafting and when they didn’t he calls the players they did a bust. This guy who is a Raiders fan writing about the 49ers is a joke. I do not know how he still has this job, O wait because his daddy got him the job, his daddy is not a good writer either. Now its time to take a few cohns to the bowl and wipe my zones.

  39. TobyNiner says:

I’ll stick by my prediction 5 months ago.

Week 1: at Green Bay. The Niners defense is one we’ll talk about for decades. Legendary. They will turn it on again and start right off with that magic against Green Bay. Aaron will scramble and run for yards when he can’t throw and gets flushed from the pocket, but he can’t win the game himself. 27-17 Niners.

  40. 23jordan says:

Green Bay has a very young defense. They are starting at least 3 rookies and will be playing more than 6 at any given time. I expect the bully that was being built on offense to finally take shape for our 49ers. There is no way our running game will be stopped! Anything we get from the passing game will be a bonus. We will finally run the ball at will and the Packers will know what’s coming and will not stop it. The bully is here. Gore and Hunter are about to get at least 180 yards if not more.
Our o line will dominate and Smith may throw the ball no more than 15-18 times if that many. This is just a preview of what’s to come. When Jacobs get healthy, it’s gonna be sick. Throw in Kap and James on the read option and we may have a laugher tomorrow.

    • undercenter says:

I am hoping for a devastating run game. Nothing better then running it down the gut. Running inside and outside. Defense tightens up to stop the run AS goes over the top with any one of the receivers. First offensive play for Niners will be a pass.

  41. boopsie says:

Your sobering prediction resonates with me. You know, you’ve got to tell it like you see it, otherwise, what are you doing here?
I also can’t see the Niners coming out of GB with the win, but I think it’s a one TD difference. I want to be VERY wrong about a loss, but…
Losing in GB is not going to derail the season. What I’ll be watching for is the cohesion and intensity of the team coming out of a very non-revealing preseason. Is the offense improved in the red zone? Can they consistently convert 3rd downs? Are the receivers getting open for Alex. Is the OL markedly improved? Is the defense really different with Aldon in every down? Can the Niners stop the 3rd down pass? Was Carlos Rogers a one year wonder? These are the important things tomorrow as I see it.
My nightmare is SF getting blown out (14 points +) – that turns everything on it’s head.

  42. Coach AkeemRaheebSmokaSumyaweed says:

No Team can hold Davis& Moss in check.
Un realistic to believe they can double team both players and if the do that leaves nine on seven and the Packers cant stop the run one on one, let alone create a pass defense. Woodson a nice player when used right but he cant stay up with Davis or Moss and the linebacker is poorous. Clay Mathews is nice rushing the Q but crumbles like a folding chair when you run at him.
Benson and Newhouse may be able to chop Aldon Smith if they new where he was coming from. They won’t know. Fanzio knows they will try and double team. The stunt was made for double teams. Hate to think what will happen if they send an extra player. The Packers are in trouble. They know they are in trouble. With that said playing Rodgers at home is double edge for the Packers. Playing the Packers defense is an edge for SF.

  43. SourdoughSam says:

Grant way to be a doubter ;( is this because they didnt pick your boy Fleener?

  44. Brotha Tuna says:

I saw some of our boyz around town today wearing colors. Flags on porches too. One fella, maybe 19 or 20, with his brand new Moss84 Niners jersey. The Tribe arises! Can’t wait!
    GFN!

    • ninermd says:

Nice! Put the final touches for the kick off party here tomorrow and went and picked up my new Davis Jersey. And a frickin lions fan was handed my package. I’m glad I caught him before he got into his car. I told him you almost got a free jersey. He says “that’s what I’m picking up too” I ask Which player” he says “Calvin Johnson I’m going to the game next week” I say so am I and I’ll be there booing the *hit out of you. Imagine if we both went home and opened up each others jersey. Wheeew!

  45. rath44 says:

I tend to leave the predictions to football “geniuses’ and “experts” who claim they can see into the future, and are, more often than not, completely wrong. I just hope we have a good showing. If we lose by 3, I’m ok with it. Not ok with losing, but that we showed up and can play with them. As someone else said here, we have known about this game for many months and will be ready.

It’s an intriguing matchup; a so-so Pack defense against our improved offense. Even last year’s offense would have done well against them, imo. The thing that worries some is that historically we don’t play well against the Pack. But does that really mean anything to these players? Our struggles against them came during a different regime, with Young, Garcia and Grbac. Perhaps we change all that tomorrow. Sure hope so. Go Niners.

  46. Bryan says:

Kendel Hunter will pass frank gore by week 4

    • Brotha Tuna says:

I’m guessing he’s more effective running inside this year, and still brings the wiggle & burst off tackle and outside. Wheel route!

  47. I.P. Daily says:

The hard part for me is that I cannot watch the game. I can watch spurts but it’s the same as the first time I saw Dracula when I was seven years old. Absolutely scared the sh*t out of me. Even the Blair Witch Project. I watched it in bits and pieces at least 10 times before I saw the whole thing…

    • Brotha Tuna says:

Ah, Hahhahahaha! ˆtotally understand how you feel,…..for this time LAST YEAR!! Now,…… I fear nobody, but have tremendous respect for AR. We still have to earn it. We’re built to dominate in 4th Qtr. But its true, we can’t get too far behind early.

  48. ninermd says:

I see the coming out party of Alex smith and the future super bowl winners. Usually against this team I have visions of our secondary getting torched and some jackass in a yellow helmet leaping into the stands all day. This whole week I’ve had visions of Alex smith celebrating in the end zone. 49ers shock the world and become the true front runners of the league. 26-17 with halftime adjustments!

  49. ninermd says:

    Sf 49ers=Andre ward
    GB packets = chad Dawson.

    $$$$$$$$$SMACK THE PACK!$$$$$$$$$$

  50. AES* says:

Fair enough Grant. But on GB’ offensive side, I see AR throwing until his arm falls off, because they will not be able to run on us.

You’re right about the team employing the Nickle package on the Pack.
AR will need to attack on the outside because I believe that P.Will and N.Bow will drop back to help take away the medium passes that the Giant’ had success with in the 1st half of the championship game. Our DB’ will earn their money guarding GB’ speedy WR’ all day. But I believe they can get the job done. I see 2-3 INT’ by AR because he will take his shots (that’s what a gunslinger does).

On our offensive side. It will be all about ball control with 70-80% of the plays going to our RB’. AS will be very selective in his passes. Nothing spectacular unless there’s a clear shot downfield. Keeping the ball away from AR as much as possible is KEY!
It’s time to ‘reverse the curse!’

  51. Crab15 says:

Grant – UCLA 2-0! BIG win vs Nebraska.

  52. Fred P Soft says:

Just an opinion fellas. As for my opinion. I think this one is gonna come down to who is a more balanced team. Will Aaron Rodgers be able to throw when he wants and will the niners be able to run when we want. We can fall back on Alex Smith to come through against their defense. They cant fall back on their run gane to come through if rodgers stumbles. Our ST is way better. We win. 37-27

  53. Reecan says:

You need to put something up to win or lose when you make predictions or what’s the point of just throwing statements out there. Here’s what I will put up. If your prediction is correct I will continue reading your column. If not then you need to stop writing your column… fare enough?

  54. rebelscum74 says:

Grant, I hope you are wrong, but your prediction is reasonable and on par with others. However as much as you have stated in the past that Packers have the better coaches, I 100 percent disagree and feel JH as something special planned for the packers, Also as much as you say they will take four players to neurtralize two of ours, you leave out Bowman and Willis who are far from ordinary and one of them could be coming on Blitz packages while the other drops in formation. I feel the game will be 35 to 24,Niners win!!!! I could be dead wrong, but JH is no Dummy, Is affect on the game will start to come to light and all of the coaches and players will be working together.

  55. big niner says:

    Grant,
Usually I read your posts and never criticize them. Today, I’m utterly offended by your football knowledge. center and guards don’t double team DE’s. That would mean they’d need to kick out all the way to the outside and if so, opening up a huge hole in the middle. It just doesn’t make sense. If you said the tackle and guard plus a rb chipping on the outside, it would make more sense. If you want to predict a loss, that’s your right but use better reasoning or at least fake it better.
I see the Packers try to be balanced. The Niners should shut down the running game forcing GB to throw. Everyone is talking about the Cobb match up with Cox. I don’t think in the greater scheme of the defense, they’ll be able to exploit any particular weak point. The Niners have a very balanced Defense and a great scheme they’re returning to.

    My predictions:
    The game will be close.
Whom ever wins the trenches and turnover ratio, wins the game.
Rodgers gets smacked around with constant stunting and confusion for their o-line.
We will run all the way to soldier field on that defense.
Delanie Walker has a huge game.
Kyle williams will get off tomorrow and we’ll forget the Giants game.
Randy Moss get at least 3 deep balls thrown his way, catches two of them, one for a TD.
Crabtree opens up the underneath stuff with slant routes and goes for at least 100 yards.
Gore rushes for over 100 yards
Hunter has 50 yards in the air and 50 on the ground.

    final score.
SF 28-17, and the lead story on sports center!!

  56. ---NotEvenClose says:

The problem with your prediction Grant is that you arent keeping track of the numbers. If GB does what you say they will they will be easily overpowered. You say they will use 4 guys to block 2. That means the other two lineman will have to block McDonald and Brooks one on one. No easy task. Now the 9ers have 7 guys to cover the 4 receivers running routs. Those numbers back the 9ers. More so the 9ers can send lets Bowman on a blitz unblocked. Rogers would have max two seconds to get rid of the ball witg half of his receivers in double coverage. I see Rogers getting hit often and throwing picks under your scenario. Your footballs wisdom seems minimal

  57. Adam707 says:

Funny reading all you arguing with the double team scenario Grant is suggesting will happen. Willis/Bowman wont be blitzing. Rodgers is too good against the blitz. Justin, Aldon and ray will have to beat 5 blockers. Ray and Ahmad have to win their one on ones for us to win. Assuming of course the packers do take the double team approach.

    • big niner says:

They’ll pressure AR any way they can, blitzing, zone blitzing and stunts giving a lot of confusing looks. The key will be whether we can match up in base D. Our nickle can hold up but I’d like to see Bowman on the field.

  58. big niner says:

JH has had all off season to game plan for this game!!!! think he’ll lose this? think again…..

    • Crab15 says:

big niner – JH probably had a good Packers strategy session with his brother and pops too.
The combined football brainpower in the Harbaugh family is staggering.

      • big niner says:

I agree! This is kind of a home coming for him. you know he wants this game almost as much as last years Ravens game. They want to slay the dragon and they know the giants were beat last year so this is the REAL dragon. WE will beat this one demensional team.

  59. NINER D says:

Niners d can speak for themselves. Niners offense is multidementional. GB d isn’t great. GB offense is ONE dementional, passing! Niners have a WHOLE team. GB has a one sided offense. I hate when people think Rodgers is unbeatable. He’s ONE person!

  60. Bdizzlefarizzle says:

Grant!!! I’m a long time supporter of you and your blogs, but really, why write such a thing. It’s not the Loss prediction that makes me cringe, but the premise by which you base your allegations. Don’t forget we have the best front Seven, yes Seven in the NFL! So to base a loss on the simple fact that they will double, arguably our best two defensive players is just plain silly. Additionally, why couldn’t we win with Alex passing? We’ve done it in the past, and GB is far from the best secondary Alex has/will faced. Also, how do you know how Moss will be used, because I think the rest of us 9ers fans and the 16 teams we face this year, as well as all of the Media professionals are still completley perplexed on this. I guess I expected a little more from you!

Also, Medic how the hell are you a Niners fan? You make no sense, either get behind your team or don’t. The Nedia is paid to be biased, us Faithful are Faithful no matter what. I have never predicted a Niners loss, ever, even after the great Biners depression circa 1999 – 2010; you know why, because I am faithful to the end no matter what!! Call me naive, but I’m a Niners fan, and I would never walk into a game thinking my team can’t win, because this 53 men on our team walk in and think they can and will win every week, and I support them! Also, I changed my handle from 49or69allthetime to Bdizzlefarizzle, not to hide, but to make sure you and anyone else on this board can find me on Twitter or SM. go Niners, go all the Smith’s and go Harbaugh!! Niners are back baby!!

  62. OREGONINER says:

  64. Willie niner says:

    Sorry about the misspelling…..

  65. Brodie2Washington says:

The Green Bay papers are saying the Packers running back will chip Aldon Smith before continuing their pass pattern. They mentioned nothing about the back staying in to block the entire play (like Gore sometimes does).

Look for alot of quick chips, then the back dribbles into the flat behind Aldon.

Teams like the Giants sometimes keyed their blitzes to when Gore would stay in to block. Linebacker sees Gore stay in, linebacker rushes the passer. If the Packers do keep a back in (I doubt they will very often), I see Bowman shooting the gap while Willis follows the Tight End.

  66. KezarMike says:

    49ers-26. Packers-17

  67. PackerSuperbowl says:

You folks sure blow alot of hot air about how you might beat the Packers. Packers win 42-21. You are right, it is just one game. Packers headed for 19-0 this year.

  68. LSX says:

Green Bay’s defense isn’t as bad as many of you suggest. Something about playing in Lambeau really bothers me. I still have a bad feeling in my gut about this game.

Even last decade when we had good teams, I remember some horrible Week 1 memories. I think back to the first game (I think it was ’97) against Tampa Bay, we lost 13-6 and also lost Young and Rice to injuries. Same year GB easily beat us in the NFC title game. Next year, we got smoked by Jacksonville in Week 1 (I think the score was 44-6 or something outrageous).

Obviously it’s apples to oranges and we can’t even compare today’s team with those, but I just don’t have a good feeling going into Week 1. Maybe it’s just excited nervous jitters.

    • big niner says:

so Jacobs is the only no go today. That means Ginn plays which is another added dimention.
You’re nervous and that’s O.K. I was getting ready on friday night. I was pissed at all the nay sayers from the media.

Grant, everybody and their mother is taking the packers! Yes A Rodgers is a stud and this is going to be a big challange for our team however i love the fact we are the underdog!!! I agree with you, Green bay is going to try to slow down SMITHS but this will create opportunities for our LB and Ray!
I think Aaron is going to have a good game as usual but the key here is to keep up with the packers and do not allow easy tds!

I really believe we have the opportunity to beat the packers if we can execute the following:

    - Rush AR and move him around to disturb his timing with his recievers
    - Play agressive on the secondary by playing bump and run
    - Win the time of position and run the ball effectively on the packers to wear down their defense and keep the ball out of AR hands
    - Prevent 3rd and long situations and use hot reads to exploit blitz for big gains

    GO NINERSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  71. Jack Hammer says:

    Grant,

Are you at Lambeau yet? As a football junkie who has never been, I am curious to hear your first impressions.

    • Grant Cohn says:

Thanks for asking. I’m driving up in an hour, and I’ll write my first impressions in the live blog before the game.
P.s. Still think the Bruins won’t win eight games this year?

      • Jack Hammer says:

        I eat my words : )

Was out and didn’t get a chance to watch the game, but was checking updates via Twitter. Very impressive.

      • rocket says:

I told you Mora would have them playing well. Still don’t see 8 wins though.

  72. Neal says:

Why people get so upset about meaningless predictions. My prediction is that I believe the Niners will win, Grant thinks they will lose. Big deal win or lose, the sun will come out tomorrow, and the Niners will have game two next week. Also as they say this game is NOT a must win. The must win will be in January if we are lucky to play the Packers again. I would rather win the divinson then beat the Packs today. Even with a 10-6 record.

  73. Brotha Tuna says:

What a shame that posters use demeaning and derogatory comments as opposed to logic and cogent arguments in disagreeing with other comments on this blog. Be nice, be honest and express your opinions, but don’t be ugly. It only degrades you, the poster.

As for the game, home field advantage is worth 3 points. Packers have too much offensive fire power throwing the ball.

I look for AR to run some no huddle very early to restrict 49er substitution and also to move the pocket and launch points by design so that the 49er pass rush cannot tee off on a make-shift GB offensive line.

    GB – 23; SF – 17

      @mike

Very true about the manner in how we communicate with one another. Interesting fact on this blog:

It is ok to attack one another (and nothing here is really as bad as it gets). But if you make a complimentary comparison between players, now that is out of line.

  75. DS94everXev says:

Jaws on ESPN said that QB’s should take the checkdown if nothing is open downfield.

Apparetly he listens to the “crazies” like JH/JM. Not the people who know best on this blog. I know, I know. I’m very disappointed and angry.

    • Neal says:

The check down does not bother me as much as the 44 sacks he got last year, that has to be in the bottom top 5 in the league, so yea low interceptions but 44 sacks, even Roman said on a comcast with MM, he needs to iimprove that.

    • big niner says:

That play into our hands then, AS the check down king, j/k people but I couldn’t help egging on all the haters for a second. I hope AR gets rocked today!!

    • Crab15 says:

DS – That’s not the problem.
Sometimes Alex checks down too soon when he has time to look at 2nd or 3rd option downfield.
Check downs are fine, just don’t rush them.

      • big niner says:

Looks fro crabs to get 100 yards today!! quick slants to the house.

I disagree. AS’s clock is faster than it should be. No disagreement here.

But there is a logical reason to it. Because he doesn’t get the protection A QB needs (not just AS). Until he gets that protection time as the norm, his clock will be faster. And there is no reason why it shouldn’t be. This isn’t all on the OL, but it is there job to give their QB a good 3.1-3.6 seconds before the pass rush makes the QB move. And AS typically has a full second less.

AS internal clock is fast for a reason. Solve that reason, then AS will have a chance to solve his fast clock. Don’t solve it, and you’ll always have a fast clock QB.

Good breakdown Grant. I predicted a GB win early in the week 31-20 so I obviously agree with your view on it. The one wildcard in this whole thing is the Niners TOP. If they can sustain long clock eating drives and finish them off with TD’s at least half the time they can win, but that’s a very tall order.

    Have fun at Lambeau Grant.

  77. Grumpy Guy says:

I’m going to be contrary here. 49ers win a DEFENSIVE game, 22-16.

  78. Neal says:

Check out Lowell column today. Brilliant column on Rodgers and Smith. You have one guy who takes very smart risks, he throws the balls where he expects a receiver will be and still have a very low interception rate and another that when he crosses the street he will look both way’s 6 times, before he crosses.

    • Hoferfan67 says:

Neal, that’s all true. No big shocker there.

    • Prime Time says:

Fitzperv, keep it down today okay? The adults are trying to watch football. Go play fetch or do whatever it is clowns like you do on Sunday’s. Thanks pal!

    • Coffee's for closers says:

One guy sat on his couch and watched the NFC Championship game and the other played in it. I guess there is more to winning in this league then leading your receivers and taking chances with the ball.

    • Neal says:

      Prime Perv,

I heard your Moms call you Pin head and numbnuts due to lack of brain activity. LMAO !!!! Now go slam your 8 tracks against your Mommy’s basement walls . LMAO You are so damn easy to annoy. ahahahahhahahah

  79. Hoferfan67 says:

I’m looking forward to watching ALuck today during a regular season game (Chi). We know what he did during the preseason. It will be interesting…

  80. Coffee's for closers says:

Tannehill is driving the dolphins on the Texans. I think you will see soon why I didn’t include Miami in the Matt Barclay sweepstakes recently.

D’oh Reggie just killed the drive with a fumble. Bet if he thought the ball was one of Kim’s amazing boobies he’d never drop the thing, I know I wouldn’t the problem is I don’t think you’re supposed to run with the ball in your mouth.

  81. George says:

I think the Niners have a good chance to win any game, this one included, but obviously no one wins every game, so if they lose to GB in GB, it won’t matter much to me. They should be good enough to win their division and make the playoffs, by which time their offense will have matured and it will be very hard for anyone to beat them. In Jim and Trent we trust! Go San Fran!

  82. Eric says:

Dude you are so far off. Try reversing that go write for the packers

  83. Cep says:

    Needless to say…

When you have a blog when the majority of readers know more and write better than the guy who runs it, then why keep the guy around? The answer is–it is more easier and more fun to react to a dope than to some sharp-eyed commentator. It feels more democratic too. So I say, hang in there, Grant!

  84. Erich says:

This prediction show what a low football IQ this writer has. hahaha.. double team the smith’s was his solution the the niners D.. what a joke this guy is.

  85. bionic says:

Incredible analysis, Grant. You were spot on.

  86. Bdizzlefarizzle says:

If ya don’t know, now ya know fools!!!!!!!!!

  87. Montana Joe says:

It’s like you and your dad love being dead wrong. Open mouth, insert foot… Stick to some decent reporting and leave the gambling to the pros. I was tough to write as if I was carving everything into stone, i.e., to say as little as I needed to get the message across.

    I predict:
You will need a new job, followed by no one reading what you right. After your not taking serious anymore you will apply for two jobs with zero responding back and your left with 0 opportunities. Afterwards you will be forgotten with no one ever rememeberinyour name. Final score you 0 others 34.
