Report: 49ers trade Vernon Davis to Broncos

The San Francisco 49ers just announced they have traded tight end Vernon Davis and a 2016 seventh-round draft pick to the Denver Broncos for sixth-round draft picks in 2016 and 2017. It seems the 49ers finally have come to terms with the fact that their season is over. Don’t be shocked if San Francisco trades Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Staley next. The fire sale officially has begun.

Jim Tomsula on the 49ers’ offense: “The biggest thing that I asked for was just fine-tune the focus.”

Here is the transcript of Jim Tomsula’s Friday press conference, courtesy of the 49ers’ P.R. department. Opening comments: “Injuries, [WR] Quinton Patton is, he’s in that protocol. So, that should be cleaned up. I think it’s today, today or tomorrow, they have through the week. But, he’s done all the walk-thrus, he’s done all that stuff, just been no contact. [T Joe] Staley, [vice president of football operations Jeff Ferguson]…

49ers practice highlights

SANTA CLARA – Here are the highlights from Tuesday’s practice. THE GOOD 1. RB Kendall Hunter. Led all members of the first-team offense with five touches during team drills (Carlos Hyde and Anquan Boldin each had three touches – tied for second-most on the first team). One of Hunter’s touches was a catch on a screen play, and another was an eight-yard touchdown run on a stretch-zone run to the…

49ers get smarter in the passing game

This is my Saturday column. Some say the 49ers suffered a damaging blow when the NFL suspended their No. 3 receiver, Jerome Simpson, for the first six games of 2015. Some say they showed no football wisdom in signing him, a player likely to be suspended. I say forget Jerome Simpson. His absence will have zero impact. He wasn’t the Niners No. 3 receiver, anyway – not in training camp,…

49ers training camp report: Day 14

SANTA CLARA – Here are the highlights of the 49ers’ fifth non-padded practice of training camp. THE GOOD 1. TE Vernon Davis. One of those days no one could cover him. Made seven catches during team drills, and scored a touchdown against safety Jimmie Ward during one-on-one drills in the red zone. Ward jumped to swat the football, Davis jumped much higher and caught the football, barreled through Ward on…

49ers training camp report: Day 12

SANTA CLARA – Here are the highlights of the 49ers’ eighth padded practice of training camp. THE GOOD 1. RB Reggie Bush. Didn’t play during Saturday’s preseason game against the Texans, and may not play at all during the preseason – the coaches seem to want to keep him healthy. But, from the looks of practice, Bush will play a lot during the regular season. Today he had a team-leading…

SANTA CLARA – Here are the highlights of the 49ers’ sixth padded practice of training camp. THE GOOD 1. WR Torrey Smith. Faced Niners’ No. 1 cornerback Tramaine Brock three times during one-on-one drills in the red zone, and beat him all three times. First Smith beat Brock with a fade route to the back pylon. Next Smith beat Brock with a double move – first in, then out. Finally…

49ers training camp report: Day 6

SANTA CLARA – Here are the highlights from the 49ers’ third padded practice of training camp. THE GOOD 1. TE Vernon Davis. His best day of training camp, and the best receiver on the field. Made four catches during team drills, including a 50-yard touchdown catch. On the touchdown Davis ran straight down the middle of the field, straight past the second-team defense’s safeties, and third-string quarterback hit Davis perfectly…

Trent Baalke on Aldon Smith, Colin Kaepernick and Vernon Davis

SANTA CLARA – 49ers’ general manager Trent Baalke just spoke with 49ers’ beat reporters at Levi’s Stadium. Here are selected quotes. Q: What’s your impression of Aldon Smith these days? BAALKE: Aldon’s like any young player, he’s growing up, he’s maturing. You see that with a lot of these guys. Some of them get themselves in a few more situations that you wish they didn’t. If you asked them, I…

49ers training camp report: Day 1

SANTA CLARA – Here are the highlights from the 49ers’ first practice of training camp, which took place at Levi’s Stadium. THE GOOD 1. WR Torrey Smith. SANTA CLARA – Here are selected quotes from Anquan Boldin’s Friday morning press conference in the 49ers’ auditorium. Q: What gives you confidence that you guys can achieve what you set out to achieve last year and the year before? BOLDIN: We still have a lot of talent in this locker room. That hasn’t changed. SANTA CLARA – Here are selected quotes from Vernon Davis’ Friday morning press conference in the 49ers’ auditorium. 5 things to know about the 49ers before camp opens

This is my training-camp preview for the 49ers. The 49ers may be on the downswing. This offseason, they fired a top-notch coaching staff and lost almost a dozen veterans and leaders. Who will fill those voids? That’s just one key question the Niners face. Here are five more they’ll face during training camp: 1. Is Jim Tomsula a competent head coach? He’s never even been a coordinator in the NFL….

49ers 20, Cardinals 17: Grades

SANTA CLARA – Hey, at least the 49ers didn’t lose to both Cardinals’ backup quarterbacks this season. KAEPERNICK: B+. Played his best when it really mattered. Threw two touchdown passes and zero picks for the first time since Week 6. Also threw zero fourth-quarter touchdown passes for the 18th game in a row. Would have committed a Delay of Game penalty with 2:11 left in the fourth quarter if Marcus…

49ers’ coaching choice important and perilous

This is my Wednesday column. Trent Baalke will move against you first, Jed. After you get rid of Jim Harbaugh, Baalke will set up an interview with someone you’re supposed to trust — some hot-shot NFL offensive coordinator, maybe Adam Gase or Josh McDaniels or Darrell Bevell. And at that interview, the coordinator will guarantee to Baalke he can fix the 49ers’ offense. Do not let Baalke hire him, Jed….
